Logistics Learning Alliance

Who we are and what we do

Logistics Learning Alliance are a leading supplier of Logistics/Supply Chain Courses and

Qualifications. Subjects covered include Management and Leadership, Supply Chain

Management, Logistics Operations including Warehousing, Transportation, Inventory

Control, Production Planning and Soft Skills.

As one of the UK’s leading training companies in

Logistics we offer exceptional levels of training both

for individuals and for organisations. Our award

winning development programmes are designed to

both challenge and develop your Supply Chain and

Logistics skills.

All of our programmes are offered by online

distance learning with face to face courses or a

blended option being available on request. We are

also able to create bespoke programmes to meet

specific organisational needs.

These experiential learning programmes build on a

simulated work place, with strong tutor support to

ensure that you have an enjoyable learning

experience.

Our tutors are all logistics and supply chain

professionals, from a range of backgrounds

spanning commercial, humanitarian and military

sectors. All are driven by one vision – to help

students through to successful completion of their

programmes. We want you to ask the questions

when you need help and guidance. Customer

service and support for our students is at the heart

of our business.

Our Programmes use the innovative ‘competence

model’ approach, which emphasizes application of

skills, as opposed to the examination of knowledge.

At the start of their course, the candidate (or

student) is placed into a realistic scenario in which

they have to advise on and manage logistics

functions.

Throughout the programmes, candidates are

supported by tutors experienced in commercial or

humanitarian logistics. The team at LLA also assess

candidates’ assignments and determine when they

are ready to proceed to the next unit.

The European Supply Chain Award for Excellence in

Training and Professional Development is awarded

for projects that have resulted in improvements to

the supply chain via strategic use of training and

development programmes. In 2011 the award was

won by the partnership of the Fritz Institute, the

CILT and LLA for the Certification in Humanitarian

Logistics programme.

LLA is also an approved Learning Provider for the

Enhanced Learning Credits scheme, designed to

provide assistance to qualifying British Military

service personnel in gaining a nationally recognised

qualification.

Fritz-CILT Humanitarian

Certification Programmes

The Fritz Institute/CILT Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain programmes are designed

to certify the practitioners application of their skills in relevant humanitarian aid situations.

LLA is proud to be the exclusive learning partner delivering these distance learning

programmes for the humanitarian community.

Humanitarian Logisticians and Supply Chain

Managers are called upon to provide responses in a

variety of situations, sometimes planned for, but

often happening without warning. In such

situations, they must have the ability to quickly

construct and operate a supply chain to bring relief

to those in need.

Where other qualifications are not related to the

humanitarian world, the Certification programmes

have been designed by the sector for the

sector. Updating the programmes in 2017 to

include Cash Transfer Programming (CTP) has

demonstrated that the programmes remain as

relevant and current now as they were when

they were first launched in 2006. All three

Programmes are delivered through supported

distance learning

The Fritz-CILT Humanitarian Certification

Programmes are recognised by NGOs including

ICRC, UNICEF, WFP, UNHCR, Save the Children,

Oxfam, International Rescue Committee, MSF,

World Vision and IMC. The Programmes have come

to be recognised as the leading Programmes for

logisticians both already working in the field and

those who wish to join these or similar

organisations.

The suite consists of the following three

programmes:

Certification in Humanitarian Logistics (CHL)

Course duration:

15-18 months (320 guided learning hours)

CHL is aimed at people who work (or aspire to

work) within humanitarian aid organisations in (or

interacting with) supply functions, typically

involving warehousing, transport and/or inventory.

The self- paced distance learning is designed

specifically for those presently working, often in

deep field locations, with busy schedules, and

require flexibility in their learning schedules. This

course can also be studied in French.

Some of the units from CHL, including the new Cash

Transfer Programming unit, can be studied as

individual Awards. Contact LLA for more details.

Certification in Humanitarian Supply Chain

Management (CHSCM)

Course duration:

15-18 months (240 guided learning hours)

CHSCM is aimed at humanitarian logisticians who

are operating at a tactical level and are engaged in

planning, resourcing and managing the supply

chain and the implementation of supply chain

strategy. Typically, candidates hold positions such

as Logistics Coordinator, Logistics Manager and

Head of Logistics. While there are no set academic

prerequisites, candidates are required to have

experience as well as knowledge in humanitarian

logistics and operations.

Certification in Humanitarian Medical Logistics

Practices (MedLog)

Course duration:

6 months (80 guided learning hours)

MedLog is aimed at experienced logisticians and

medical specialists handling and planning the

medical supply chain and cold chain within

humanitarian organisations. There are no academic

pre-requisites to joining the programmes. Less

experienced logisticians are recommended to take

the Certification in Humanitarian Logistics

programme first.

Humanitarian Essentials

Logistics Module (HELM)

The Humanitarian Essentials Logistics Module (HELM) modules were developed following

feedback from major humanitarian aid agencies on the need for short face to face events to

allow staff to gain a wider understanding of the world of Humanitarian supply chain and

logistics. HELM is a new kind of training experience for humanitarian logisticians.

The HELM events serve as a development

programme covering the essential functions and

roles within humanitarian logistics and the supply

chain. Attendance at the events is open to those who

are looking at developing new skills, refreshing their

professional knowledge and expanding their supply

chain and logistics knowledge.

The HELM modules can be used either as an

introduction or supplement to the learning on Fritz-

CILT Humanitarian Certification programmes.

Delivered primarily through face-to-face training

events, these training events are delivered in a

number of different countries. Since their

introduction in 2015, HELM has been delivered in

Kenya, Liberia, Turkey, Sierra Leone and Haiti, and

we plan to deliver events in the Democratic Republic

of Congo in the near future.

There are no entry requirements for participating in a

HELM Event – the course is open to anyone either

working in, or with an interest in, humanitarian

logistics. Students don’t need to be currently

working for a humanitarian organisation.

A typical HELM learner could be:

A newcomer to humanitarian logistics

An experienced logistician looking to refresh

their skills

Working for an NGO or organisation

A team leader or manager who wants to

improve their skills

A group of employees at an NGO or

organisation

Looking to move into the sector

There are a total of 6 modules available to study, as

well as the HELM Advanced Supply Chain Manager.

The modules are designed to guide you around the

basic requirements in each area, in the context of the

humanitarian supply chain.

“Since 2004, I’ve had the pleasure of

working with LLA and they have served me and

my team well. The company has a tremendous

understanding of people’s needs and abilities,

which enables them to extract the best out of the

trainees. I would recommend LLA to any

organisation if you’re looking to improve your skill

base.”

Business Solutions for People Development

Company Board members are increasingly turning to leaders who have made careers out of

translating the big picture and thousands of moving parts into executional reality. The ranks

of future CEOs will be filled not only by former chief revenue officers or chief financial officers

but increasingly by Supply Chain Managers. Corporate value is increasingly driven by the

volume of satisfied and repeat customers. That’s reflected not by effective management of

millions in P&L, but by effective management of billions in cost of goods sold—COGS—as well

as the critical brand impact of corporate social responsibility programs. All are impacted by a

tightly managed supply chain which accounts for 75-85% of the item cost.

Our business solutions are designed to help your teams, at any level, to improve their

professional skills, leadership and management within the supply chain and the logistics

functions that support it. For the committed learner this could take them from induction

through to strategic thinker and on to the Company Board.

10

Business Solutions for

People Development

The chances are that any amount of time you spend thinking about your organisation and its

supply chain will produce the same conclusion: your organisation needs people with the right

skills and leadership qualities to bring you to the next level.

In the face of increasing customer demands, we

recognise the importance of providing every

member of your workforce with the knowledge,

skills and confidence to carry out their role. People

Development programmes are key to the success

of your organisation and to the survival and growth

of the profession.

Our ‘People Development Plans’ are part of the ongoing

process to support your team in their work.

The LLA process involves staff from different

departments being asked a series of questions to

give us a full understanding of your teams’

development needs. Based on the feedback from

these consultations, bespoke workshops will be

created by LLA to meet those needs.

Why do organisations use LLA?

Businesses we work with often require a bespoke

solution and the results we have achieved through

designing and delivering these solutions have been

extremely successful. We are here to help with your

specific needs empowering you to take control of

operations and resulting in reduced costs, better

staff retention and improved customer service.

Carried out either at your premises or our offices,

we work with your nominated manager or team to

develop their own solutions affecting your business.

It was believed that the highest value from this

type of intervention is obtained from the process of

thinking through the required tasks.

The coach needs to be proactive in their approach,

and this is achieved by encouraging the learner to go

through the thinking process, rather than follow

greater direction. It allows them to build on their

experience, challenge existing cultures and develop

their own solutions, based on industry best practice.

The learner can then develop their own learning and

project plan for how they were going to approach the

issues they face, together with the reporting

milestones. And the LLA coach is available after the

event to provide assistance and guidance from the

LLA coach as required.

While our standard programmes are fully

comprehensive across the supply chain, we listen to

our customers and act on your requirements to

create a bespoke programme that is relevant to your

company’s needs.

We can deliver Programmes in a number of different

areas, including Supply Chain Management,

Warehousing, Inventory, Logistics and Transport,

Procurement, Freight Forwarding, Last Mile

Logistics, Management and Soft Skills.

Here are some of the Companies and Organisations

who have benefited from sponsoring their staff

through exam-free qualifications with LLA:

UKWA Warehouse

Qualifications

LLA has been working in collaboration with the United Kingdom Warehousing Association

(UKWA) to develop three new qualifications, specifically designed to improve the skills of

those working in the Warehouse sector. These courses are expected to become the national

industry standard for Managers, Supervisors and Operational staff in the UK.

UKWA is Britain’s leading trade organisation for the

logistics sector, with over 650 members. UKWA

members include warehousing and logistics

providers as well as manufacturers, retailers,

wholesalers and suppliers to the logistics industry.

One of the key issues faced in any supply chain is

the productivity of the logistics components.

Research by UKWA of their membership identified

that, in order to boost productivity, there was a

need for greater emphasis on Management and

Leadership development focussed in the

warehouse managers and supervisor roles.

Being based on a model of competence, these

programmes are designed for experienced

Managers and Supervisors, or those aspiring to

these roles. They allow the candidate to

demonstrate their existing experience, while

confirming their ability to apply that knowledge in

the practical reality of warehouse operations.

These courses are designed to be studied online

through distance learning, with the option of

attending face-to-face workshops at our training

centre in Coalville, Leicestershire.

UKWA Introduction to Warehousing and

Logistics

Course duration:

3-6 months (60 guided learning hours)

Designed as an introductory programme for new

entries into Warehousing and Logistics, this course

covers the key skills and understanding needed to

commence and enhance a career in Warehousing

and the broader world of Logistics. The programme

consists of two units with a combined total of

twenty short assignments.

UKWA Warehouse Supervisor CPC

Course duration:

3-6 months (140 guided learning hours)

Designed to complement the UKWA Warehouse

Manager CPC programme, this programme is for

Supervisors and Team Leaders. This course covers

the key skills the Supervisor will need to build on

their technical competence in warehouse operations,

leadership and management. The course consists of

topics relating to Warehouse Operations,

Management and Customer Service.

UKWA Warehouse Manager CPC

Course duration:

3-6 months (160 guided learning hours)

The UKWA Warehouse Manager CPC is ideal for

employees at middle management level and is

expected to become the recognised industry

standard of achievement for Warehouse Managers in

the UK.

This course is equivalent to Level 4/5 of the

Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). This is

usually appropriate for middle and senior

management levels. There are two modules to

complete – Warehouse Management and

Management & Leadership.

In response to our customers’ requirements, the

UKWA Warehouse Manager and Warehouse

Supervisor CPCs can also be studied on a modular

basis.

International student and organisations looking to

study either the Warehouse Manager CPC or

Warehouse Supervisor CPC from outside of the UK

can study both courses as an International

Federation of Warehousing & Logistics

Associations (IFWLA) course, either through

distance learning or face-to-face training events. 13

Apprenticeship

Programmes

Apprenticeships are playing an increasingly important role in British industry, and it is

important that the right structures are in place to ensure they equip people with the right

skills. LLA can provide ‘off the job’ training elements through distance learning for

Apprenticeship Programmes.

An apprenticeship is a job with training to industry

standards. It should be about entry to a recognised

occupation, involve a substantial programme of on

and off-the-job training and the apprentice’s

occupational competence should be tested by

an independent, end point assessment.

Apprenticeships are employer-led: employers set

the standards, create the demand for apprentices

to meet their skills needs, fund the apprenticeship

and are responsible for employing and training the

apprentice.

At LLA, we are pleased to support the providers

with the content that is needed to fulfil the 20% ‘off

the job’ training element that is a requirement of

the Apprenticeship Programme.

International Freight Forwarding Specialist

Apprenticeship duration:

18 months

Ideal for those entering or who are already in the

Freight Forwarding sector. International Freight

Forwarding Specialists are responsible for a variety

of tasks on a daily basis such as shipment bookings,

creating the appropriate documents, liaison with

carriers, ports and handling agents, transport

requirements, sales quotations, invoicing, financial

procedures as well as the many customs processes

and regimes they will come across..

Students will use computer and paper-based

systems to arrange the best means of transport,

considering the type of goods and the customers

delivery requirements. This “learning by doing”

approach provides a competence and confidence

that no other training method can offer. It takes the

students out of the classroom and gives them a role

in a realistic but risk-free world leading to

significant improvements in both team and

individual and team performance.

Currently in development (ready for delivery in 2019

– contact LLA for more details)

Supply Chain Warehouse Operative

by various methods, picking/packing orders, loading

goods for dispatch, maintaining stock records and

documentation, and cleaning. This apprenticeship is

set at Level 2 standard.

Express Delivery Operative

Apprenticeship duration:

15-18 months

Express Delivery Operatives are responsible for using

world class equipment and software to provide timed

deliveries and collections to homes and businesses.

Express Delivery drivers have a high level of individual

responsibility for their working day and delivery route.

This apprenticeship is set at Level 2 standard.

Supply Chain Practitioner

Apprenticeship duration:

30 months

Supply Chain Practitioners are responsible for

coordinating a network of interconnected businesses

in the provision of goods and services to the end

customer. FMCG Supply Chain Practitioners will work

in one or more supply chain functions. Typical duties
