“
There are no days off in
crabbing.”
~ Nick Mavar
f you know much about Newport, then you know that we take Dungeness crab
very seriously here! In fact, the phrase “The Dungeness Crab Capital of the World”
became a registered trademark of the city in 2007. The Port of Newport is home to
the largest commercial fishing fleet on the Oregon Coast, and has been harvesting
record numbers of this prized culinary crustacean for over a decade. Because so much crab is
gathered locally, residents and visitors alike are able to purchase fresh crab right off the docks,
from area fish markets, and may enjoy crab in many local restaurants. Newport also offers a
variety of opportunities for you to catch your own crab directly from the docks of the Yaquina
Bay, or by boat in the bay itself.
Commercial crabbing is a way of life in Newport, and many residents work in the industry
harvesting, processing and preparing the popular shellfish. Crabbing from Newport is hard
work, and it’s dangerous. During crabbing season, fishermen brave the rough and potentially
deadly seas, and extreme weather to collect crab by passing through the Yaquina Bay Jetty, an
area simply known as “the bar.” The Yaquina Bay bar is an invisible horizontal barrier, where
the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean meet with the much shallower waters coming from the
mouth of the Yaquina River, causing extremely perilous conditions for boats leaving and
returning to the bay.
Out to sea, beyond the Yaquina Bay bar, commercial crabbers must work along the edge of the
Pacific Northwest coastline known as the “Graveyard of the Pacific,” where jagged, unforeseen
rocks and severe and rapidly changing weather create hazardous crabbing conditions. The
Discovery Channel has chronicled the life-threatening work environment faced by Newport’s
commercial crabbers in the reality series, Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove. In addition to the
difficult and harsh working conditions, crab fishermen often have to negotiate the price of
crab to get fair payment for their yield.
If you want to catch your own crab, the Yaquina Bay is perfect; it requires minimal expense
12 TRAVEL NEWPORT
and preparation and provides a great individual, family or group experience. Crabbing in
the bay is open year round, although most crab is harvested between June and November.
The best times to crab are when there is less difference between high and low tides, and
during slack tides. Pick up a copy of the current Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations, a “crab
gauge” measuring tool, and an Oregon shellfish license. Examine the regulations closely
for instructions on gear to use, limits, measuring and determining the sex of the crab. Don’t
forget to dress in warm clothes and bring gloves. Choose to bait your traps with fresh turkey,
chicken, clams, fish carcasses, small fish, or other meat scraps.
If you choose to crab the bay by boat, you will need to stay out of the navigation channel and
away from boat traffic. Select a location to drop your pots or traps that is at least 20 feet deep;
most charter boats are equipped with depth finders, but if you are renting your own boat
make sure that you are crabbing in deep water. Use sinking line (as opposed to floating line)
that is at least twice the estimated depth of the water to avoid having it get tangled in boat
propellers or swept away by erratic tidal currents. Also make sure that your pots or traps are
heavy enough to sink all the way to the sandy bottom, and that your floats and buoys can be
easily distinguished from other crabber’s gear.
Crabbing from a dock or pier is much easier and less expensive than crabbing from a boat,
although the availability of crab can be limited to the specific area that you choose to drop
your traps. The Port of Newport public fishing pier (located between the Rogue Brewery and
the historic Newport Bay Bridge) in South Beach, and the Abbey Street Pier on the Historic
Bayfront are some of the best spots to crab. Tie off the end of your crab line to the pier, and
position your pots and rings so as to not interfere with boat traffic.
If you choose to use pots, leave them undisturbed for at least 45 minutes before pulling them
in to examine your catch. With rings, let them sit at least 10 minutes before checking them,
and then pull them up consistently and quickly to allow the basket shape to capture all of
the crab in the trap. Crab rings and pots are inexpensive and available in many locations
throughout the Newport area, and renting them is even less expensive and might be the best
choice for your first crabbing adventure.
it can be skated in one continuous ride, but also allows skaters to focus on
specific kinds of contour and slope. The skatepark is located right next to
a portion of Sam Moore Parkway, which offers playground equipment and
inter visitors to
Newport are often
spectacular storms
and release tremendous gusts of wind,
rain, thunder and even lightning. The most
exhilarating place to watch winter storms
is just above the beach. The Nye Beach
Van Culture Flourishes
on the Oregon Coast
Surfers, nomads and weekend vagabonds, vans provide a
home, or a home-away-from-home
ans fill a traveling and lodging niche somewhere between cars and RVs; they are large enough
to live in, and are perfect for exploring coastal towns like Newport. Some people who have vans
use them to travel to the beach on their weekends or vacations, and then return home when
the trip is over. Other van owners have moved out of traditional houses and apartments all
together, and have taken up full-time residence in their vans. Regardless of where van owners
find themselves on this temporary to permanent spectrum, most agree that van ownership has given them a
sense of freedom and excitement that is unique, and that van living is a lifestyle unlike any other.
You’ll notice a variety of vans driving along the Oregon Coast and parked next to the many beaches in Newport,
but did you know that van culture has also become a nationwide sensation? The concept of van living has
changed dramatically during the last 20 years; from SNL’s Chris Farley “living in a van down by the river”
due to economic hardship in the mid-1990s, to modern times when van living is now a romanticized quest
for simpler living. Over the last fifteen years, van culture has been documented and shared through blog
posts, YouTube videos, and Instagram photos, with hashtags like #vanlife. Organizations, clubs and groups
that celebrate van culture have also become very popular, with some that are all inclusive and others that cater
to specific makes and models of camper or modified vans.
Frequently, van owners customize the interiors of their vans to maximize all available space and utilize
resources that are readily available. Meira and Louie Cole bought a 1988 Ford E350 4WD high top van almost
three years ago, and although they don’t live in the van and they spend most of their time in Newport, they
often travel up and down the Pacific Coast to where the surfing is the best. When they bought their van, they
installed a rebuilt engine that runs on biodiesel that Louie makes, and added a propane on demand hot water
shower. They also built a back bench seat that folds into a bed, storage shelves and surfboard racks, and even
equipped the van with a solar panel that charges their electric cooler.
Meira explains how the van enables them to go into very rural places where there are no nearby stores,
lodging or restaurants, like Baja, California, “As intrepid explorers, the van allows us to take everything we
26 TRAVEL NEWPORT
need to go beyond the limits of other people all in
the name of surf.” Living in a van can also be difficult,
and often challenging because of the lack of many
basic functions that are included in traditional homes
or even most RVs. Because of the extra work and
effort it takes van owners to perform simple things
like using the bathroom, cooking, or having clean
laundry, Meira adds, “It takes a certain person to
cruise a van. You have to be able to rough it.”
Other van owners, like Daniel Hasselschwert of
Ossie’s Surf Shop, decided to live in a van and stop
paying rent entirely. Two decades ago, Hasselschwert
lived in a van for more than three years, because
when he wasn’t teaching school in Corvallis, he was in Newport surfing, and paying rent was unnecessary. He
eventually moved to Newport, changed occupations, and didn’t own a van for a long time, but really missed
his van, or “rolling dorm room” as he refers to it. Hasselschwert’s most recent van reflects the changes in his
life, and he says that “Customizing them (vans) is the fun part; when life changes, so does the van.”
Hasselschwert’s current van is a Volkswagen 1986 Syncro Vanagon 4WD, and is a rare find, as only around
40,000 were produced and distributed worldwide. Since acquiring the Syncro, Hasselschwert has added a
dome on top and an outside rack, which he plans to expand further now that he has a young son. He explains
that because the Syncro is 4WD, it can go off road to some of the hardest to reach surfing spots, or through the
snow if he wants to go snow camping. Hasselschwert says, “You can take this van almost anywhere, you can
also park it anyplace that you can park a car, and you can leave anytime you want.”
Van owners Ashley and Patrick Ward talk about the same freedom, “It makes it so we can be more spontaneous;
we keep the van stocked so we can hit the road whenever we want.” The Wards own a 1980 Volkswagen
Riviera, and take a lot of local and regional trips. Ashley explains that, “The van was pretty grungy when we
bought it, but we transformed the interior by pulling out the old pressboard and installing cabinets and
tongue-and-groove pine interior.” Patrick had worked as a Volkswagen tech for over ten years, and had owned
a series of vans that he toured around in with a rock band when he was younger, so owning a van was second
nature to him.
Ashley wasn’t so sure about owning a van when Patrick introduced the idea to her, but she quickly fell in
love with the project when she posted Instagram photos or their van and people began to respond in record
numbers. Ashley soon found herself in a community of like minded van owners, and says, “Vans are cool. This
has been a great project that we like to do together, from making it our own, to taking it on trips. We always
look forward to running into cool people with cool vans.” The Wards are not part of any organization that
meets with their vans, but they say that they are intrigued by the concept and might want to try it in the future.
Van owners are diverse and unique individuals, but they share some common traits and likes. They love
customizing their vans to make them their own, the freedom to come and go as they please, and the ability to
return to a simpler living situation, if only for the weekend. Owning a van as a hobby or lifestyle might be the
next phase for your trips to Newport; there is already a van community here that is waiting to welcome you.
Tidepools are divided into several zones. The zones
are classified based on wave action, shoreline
features and exposure during tidal periods.
The organisms that live in each zone are dependent
on a number of factors: water temperature, wave
action, variation in salinity (saltiness), exposure
to light and how much water is present. The
conditions have to be just right for an organism to
be comfortable in each zone.
Some organisms are hardier than others and are
able to live in multiple zones. Part of the fun of
exploring tidepools is discovering a plant or animal
where you least expected it to be!
Spray zone: This area extends from the highest
reach of spray and storm waves to the average
height of the high tides. It is usually dry, meaning
relatively few types of organisms can live here.
High tide zone: This zone includes the area from
the average high tide to just below the average sea
level. It is a highly saline (salty) environment and
experiences higher temperatures than other zones.
Mid-tide zone: This zone extends from just
below average sea level to the upper limit of the
average lowest tides. Mid-tide zones experience
more intense wave action than spray or high tide
zones, but nonetheless are rich in animal and plant
diversity.
Low tide zone: This zone is exposed to air only
at the lowest tides. This keeps temperatures and
salinity levels more stable, allowing for more
biodiversity than other zones. Organisms here are
also more protected from predators—like big fish—
because of the wave action and shallow water.

Access Agate Beach from Ernest Bloch Wayside
Agate Beach has a new and improved access point at Ernest Bloch
Memorial Wayside! Named after the famous composer who spent much
of his time at Agate Beach, the wayside includes an enlarged parking lot
with restrooms, exterior showers, benches and a memorial to Ernest Bloch.
The wayside is located alongside Hwy 101, and is just a short walk down
to some of the best surf on the Oregon Coast. The beach is also accessible
from the Lucky Gap Trail that winds through the forest and onto the sand.
You’ll know you’ve found it when you see the surfboards that say AGATE
BEACH propped up against the side of the restrooms!
Head Outstanding Natural
Area! At 93 feet, the historic Yaquina
Head Lighthouse is Oregon’s tallest in a
string of strategically placed lighthouses
along the Pacific Coastline. Built in 1873,
the lighthouse is situated on a narrow
basalt peninsula that spills into the Pacific
Ocean, and is surrounded by 100 acres of
the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural
Area. Guides lead year-round tours of
the lighthouse, and the headland has an
interpretive center, gift shop and is home
to many kinds of wildlife. Trails wind
through the Outstanding Natural Area,
and will take you to vistas with panoramic
views, and areas where you may see seals,
whales, sea birds, and tide pools teeming
with life.
Unwind at Sea Glass Bistro & Lounge
You’ll discover a fantastic place to relax while enjoying amazing coastal
cuisine and beverages inside the Best Western Plus Agate Beach at Sea
Glass Bistro & Lounge. The newly remodeled and renamed restaurant and
bar combines breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks with stunning views of
the Pacific Ocean and Agate Beach. Choose from their seafood inspired
menu, and sip regional craft beer, wine or a signature cocktail from the
dining room, Seaview patio, or comfortable lounge. The Sea Glass Bistro &
Lounge also offers five TVs so that you can watch the big game while you’re
staying on the coast.
Beachcombing is always a
mystery when you wander
Newport’s beaches in
search of treasure; you
just never know what’s been washed up
from the depths of the Pacific Ocean until
you search for it! Great beachcombing
happens every day just a few hours
after high tide, and Agate Beach is the
perfect place to find fossils, agates,
shells and even large fishing floats. Grab
a portable tide table booklet (many local
businesses give them away), a stick or
sturdy pole to poke and pick apart the
piles of flotsam, and a bucket or bag to
hold all of your finds. Happy Hunting!
It Wouldn’t
Be Newport
without Mo’s
Mo, her restaurant, and their world-famous clam chowder
any things in Newport have changed
since Mo’s Restaurant opened on the
Historic Bayfront in 1946, but the
principles and philosophy behind the
original little seafood eatery have not.
Mohava Marie Neimi, affectionately
known as “Mo” by the thousands of people who have
met her over the years, believed that her customers
were entitled to the best food that the Oregon Coast
had to offer at a fair price. In addition to providing locals
and visitors with fresh, homemade seafood, Mo had a
remarkable impact on the coast that continues to this
day.
Mo’s first venture on the Historic Bayfront began in 1940,
when she and her father bought the Bay Haven Inn
(which is located just down the street from the original
Mo’s, and has been serving customers since 1908). Six
years later, Mo and her friend Freddie opened a little café
named Freddie and Mo’s, but Mo bought Freddie’s share
a few years later and changed the name to Mo’s. This
original location has been open ever since.
The restaurant became a local hotspot right away, and
was known as “the little joint on the waterfront,” where
fishermen and locals would gather to relax and share
their stories. Around the time of the opening, Mo also
started hosting a neighborhood talk show at the local
radio station, KNPT, where she would discuss local issues
with the residents of Newport for the next 30 years.
One morning, a woman accidently ran into the front of
the café, and was visibly upset, until Mo comforted her
by saying,” Well, we’ll just put in a garage door so you
can drive in anytime you want.” The garage door is still a
fixture of the building, and is often opened during warm
days.
Mo had developed an amazing recipe for clam chowder
when she first opened the restaurant, and many of
the early guests told her that it was the best that they
had ever had. Those guests told their friends about the
chowder, and the restaurant soon became known for
the delicious coastal delicacy. People would come from
miles around to try the chowder, and sometimes they
even had to wait in line to get into the restaurant. Mo
would often host guests who had come to eat, and if
there were people waiting in line, she would bring out
a plate of halibut and oysters for them to snack on while
they waited.
Mo personally welcomed thousands of guests into her
restaurant, and in doing so, she met many prominent
people. Legendary radio broadcaster Paul Harvey
sought out the restaurant, and when he arrived, he
asked if he could meet Mo. Famous Oregon Governor
Tom McCall, Senator Mark Hatfield, and Representative
Les AuCoin were regular visitors, and even Senator
Robert Kennedy stopped in at Mo’s Restaurant when
have been an integral part of the community for over 70 years
he passed through Oregon on his presidential tour in
1968. Senator Kennedy liked Mo’s chowder so much
that he took several buckets with him when he flew on
to Los Angeles.
When the movie “Sometimes a Great Notion” was filmed
in and around Newport in 1970, Mo met Paul Newman,
Joanne Woodward, Henry Fonda, Lee Remmick, and
other members of the cast. The cast and crew of the
movie would often come to eat at Mo’s Restaurant, and
Mo became good friends with them. Mo was even in a
scene of the movie that was filmed at the Bay Haven Inn.
As more and more people began to discover the
restaurant, Mo decided it was time to expand and
establish new locations. In 1968, Mo’s Annex went in
across the street from the original restaurant, and Mo’s
West at Devil’s Punchbowl in Otter Rock was opened
in 1972. By the early 1980s, Mo had expanded her
restaurants to Lincoln City, Florence and Cannon Beach.
Mo began to take a less active role in running the
restaurants by the late 1970s, and her granddaughter
Cindy McEntee, who had worked with Mo for most of
her life, took over many of the management duties.
In 1989, Mo gave Rogue Ales, another well-known
Newport institution, a helping hand in relocating to
the coast. Shortly after the original Rogue Alehouse was
founded in Ashland, Oregon, the building that housed
the brewery and pub was flooded beyond repair. Rogue
founder Jack Joyce was visiting Newport after the flood,
and he met Mo. Over a bowl of clam chowder, they
agreed that Mo would rent Jack the vacant storefront
and garage that she owned on Newport’s Historic
Bayfront, under two conditions: that Rogue would
promise to feed the local fishermen and that a photo of
Mo in a bathtub would forever hang above the bar (and
a copy of the photo hangs there and in every Rogue
Meeting Hall to this day).
Although Mo passed away in 1992 at the age of 79, her
legacy has lived on through the positive work ethic she
instilled in her family, and the time, energy, and money
that she gave to the community. Dozens of newspaper
and magazine articles have been written about Mo
and her restaurant. Mo’s Clam Chowder was featured
at the Smithsonian Institute’s “Best American Regional
Foods” event in 1999, and Cindy McEnee was awarded
the 2001 1st runner up, National Small Business
Person of the Year for the “outstanding development of
her business and her contributions to the community.”
Mo was an important part of Newport’s growth and
identity, and her spirit and philosophy live on through
the restaurant and through her family who still
operate it.
