Historic Walker County

In the early days, membership was restricted
to employees of the Texas Prison System; however,
in 1988, it was extended to include individuals
who were not employed by the system.
Membership was opened to anyone who
worked or resided within Walker County and
later extended to include those who worship or
attend school in Walker County, as well as their
family members.
A name change took place New Year’s Day,
1958, whereby the Texas Prison Employees
Credit Union became the Department of
Corrections Employees Credit Union (DOCE-
CU). It was changed again, in 1988, to
Community Service Credit Union (CSCU) to
reflect the expanded field of membership.
The credit union has grown exponentially
through the years and now offers services provided
by most banks; however, unlike banks, it
offers members ease of access and better fiduciary
rates. Today, it provides savings and checking
accounts, commercial accounts, certificate
accounts, money market accounts, loans,
ATM cards, Visa check cards, Visa credit cards,
Tele-Access, CSCU online, CSCU Bill Payers,
CSCU Mobile, e-statements, direct deposit,
overdraft protection, wire transfers, Travelers
Cheques, money orders, and even gift cards.
Under the direction of financial-savvy individuals,
CSCU now boasts twenty-eight fulltime
employees and 8,829 members. Assets
have increased steadily from $10,000 during
the founding year, to $534,000 in 1962; and hit
the million dollar mark in 1984, with $12 million
in assets. The turn of the century helped
the financial institution realize $32 million with
9,648 members. As of July 2011, assets grew to
more than $77 million with 8,642 members.
Community Service Credit Union’s mission
is to promote and provide complete financial
services to meet the needs of individual members;
continually improve present services and
develop new services to better serve the financial
needs of its membership. CSCU pledges
to continually research and develop programs
to satisfy the needs of its members as their
financial situations change; and provide welltrained,
sensitive representatives to counsel and
assist members in improving their economic
and social position. It pledges to adhere to
sound financial practices for maintaining a
healthy and viable capital structure.
CSCU is headquartered at 250 FM 2821 West
with the Sam South Branch located at 2432 Sam
Houston Avenue in Huntsville, Texas.
What is on the horizon for Community
Service Credit Union? “We will continue to
provide quality financial services that our
members want and need; and we will educate
consumers on the credit union business model
as to why they should choose a credit union,”
says Brenda Bass Hooker, president and CEO
of Community Service Credit Union.
