In 1821, after years of protest, Mexican<br />
forces finally won independence from Spain,<br />
and Texas became part of the new Mexican<br />
nation. Three years after independence,<br />
Mexican leaders established a constitutional<br />
republic and encouraged settlers to move into<br />
the nation’s northernmost territory, Coahuila<br />
