WELCOME...
...to the February / March 2019 edition of
Village Voice...
By the time VV is delivered, we will already be
one month into the new year - and so perhaps
our new year resolutions will be forgotten or
maybe going really well! If your new year
resolution was to take up a new activity - our
various village clubs and societies would llove
to hear from you, they are keen to encourage
new members. In this edition of VV we report
on the Village ‘Expo’ which took place recently,
an event where local organisations showcased
their organisations offerings. If you were not
able to attend, you will be able to see the latest
updates and reports from our Schools, Sports
clubs, and various societies and groups, which
provide our villages with ‘something for
everyone’. If you are not active in the village, or
a new resident, do think about taking part in
village life, as a participant or contributor.
We feature Common wood significantly in
this edition, because not only is it a beautiful
place to walk and enjoy the scenery, as well, VV
readers are invited to contribute to the upkeep of
the woods by joining the working parties, which
take place early in each winter month.
Elsewhere, we have an update on the war
against plastics. There are lots of ways we can
all take small steps, which when accumulated,
will make a big difference. I'm sure that you,
like me, have been horrified at some of the TV
and newspaper reports about the effects of
plastic on marine life. If we can each think
about small ways we can change our use of
plastic, we will make a difference.
We welcome contributions to VV, so do think
about writing, or sending us your pictures this
year. In this VV we have a report from a local
resident who wrote about his combined interests
of photography and wildlife in Common Wood,
and contributed our cover photo - thanks Scott!
The next VV will be our April and May
edition - when there will be lots of information
about upcoming summer events - always a busy
time in Penn & Tylers Green. To make a
contribution the copy deadline is 4th March.
Finally, a big thank you, to all those
volunteers who take the time to manage and run
clubs and events for our enjoyment. Thanks
must also go to the volunteer team who deliver
Village Voice in all weather conditions - and at
this time of year the weather is usually at its
most challenging! Cathy O'Leary, VV Editor
AROUND
THE VILLAGES
Penn Patient Participation Group
Last autumn’s three flu
clinics were well
attended; 535 patients
at the Penn Surgery
clinic in October, 528
patients at the Simpson
Centre clinic in
September and 551
patients at the
November clinic. It was pleasing that so many
people chose to have their vaccinations at Penn
Surgery and The Simpson Centre. However, at
busy times some patients had to queue and this
resulted in some traffic congestion at times,
despite the best efforts of the clinicians,
receptionists and PPG volunteers. The Patient
Participation Group and the surgeries have
listened to patient feedback. The PPG is
researching how other GP practices conduct
their flu vaccination programmes and will assist
the practice in developing a new model of flu
clinic for this autumn’s vaccination programme.
Super Fun Run
Book the day for Sunday 16th June, its Fathers
Day again, so what a way to treat Pa!
We are already planning, and are making
arrangements to introduce Chip Timing to the
Fun Run as well as the Penn7. We hope this will
make our lives easier in logistically dealing with
all the runners, and establishing the results,
with the help of EMIT-UK.
With this in mind, we aim to encourage pre
event booking online, full details will be
circulated in the next couple of weeks, and we
would ask all intending participants to use this
facility, especially as it will be cheaper to pre
book rather than pay on the day!!!
Last December, after Carols on the Common,
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice February/March 2019
we hosted our mulled wine and mice pie
evening, with thanks to Eddie and the Sports &
Social Club for their hospitality, during which
we presented to our 2018 charities, the funds
raised by your kind participation.
Sparkles were unable to attend due to various
circumstances, but we are happy to be able to
donate to them £500.
Charlies Footsteps were represented by Tim
Oliver, who is pictured receiving a nice big
cheque! You will see the amount on the cheque
is £8,000, BUT, between printing and
presenting, further sponsorship monies arrived,
so we were actually able to present, on your
behalf the amazing total of £9,000.00, which
will go a long way to helping Charlie in the
future when he is strong enough to undergo the
various operations which we all hope will
enable him to have an independent life.
For 2019 our nominated Charity is The
Chilterns MS Centre, which is based in
Wendover, but reaches out to patients across the
district including valuable support in P&TG.
We always value volunteer support so if you
can assist us in any way over the coming
months, please contact me. Ian Barnet, imb@talktalk.
Spring Watch on The Common 2019
The third annual spring survey of our feathered
friends to be found on the common will
commence at the beginning of April. The
unseasonably warm weather during December
and January has seen a frenzy of activity in the
hedge rows. As I prepare to join in the RSPB
Big Garden Bird watch (Jan 26-28) I am seeing
large groups of Long tailed and Blue tits on the
feeders along with numerous Coal and Great
tits. Goldfinches and Chaffinches too, flit in and
out; It is a joy to behold as they ruffle their
tershalls in preparation for the onset of spring
and the nesting season.
Beginning at The village Hall at 7am on
Sunday April 7th we shall set out on Spring
Watch 2019. Neil Harwood, our environmental
guru, has kindly agreed to join us again this year
along with Jake and Toni whose vast knowledge
of all things feathered and their humorous bird
stories had us all in a flutter. A watch on Sunday
May 5th and finally on Sunday 2nd June will
complete our trilogy. All results will be on
display in the Village Hall for all to see and to
add to for anything seen or heard from the
Common.
Do please come along and Join us, loads of
fun and the promise of learning some interesting
new facts you were probably unaware of.
P&TGRS
As part of the Holy Trinity Christmas Tree
festival, Nicole Webster and Madalyn Roker,
decorated a tree on behalf of the P&TG
Residents Society. The key feature were the
baubles, filled by Eddie Morton, with current
and historic images from the village, and covers
from some of the publications on the history of
the village written by Miles Green and Ron
Saunders. We also celebrated the current work
of the society as the Village PreSchool and
Village Voice featured in the baubles too. In
addition to the baubles, we had other
decorations symbolising village life, including
houses, churches, mushrooms, fir cones, holly
berries and a mouse to show Common Wood,
which is owned and managed by the RS for the
benefit of the community. The tree was then
displayed on a map of Penn & Tylers Green.
The tree was later, on display again, when the
P&TGRS hosted a Volunteers Christmas Party,
to recognise the contributions made by many
volunteers who contribute to the work of the
Residents Society, and to say 'thank you'.
Leader of Buckinghamshire Council, Cllr
Martin Tett and Leader of Chiltern Council, Cllr
Isobel Darby joined villagers in the St Margaret
Parish Rooms. Madalyn Roker
The Red Lion Pub
A local family residing in Penn currently have
an offer accepted subject to contract to buy The
Red Lion in Penn, Theresa Chamberlain hopes
to front the new refreshed beloved village pub,
and plans to continue to run The Red Lion as a
traditional family pub, with improvements. The
plan is to reopen in March if all goes well.
Theresa will keep VV informed of ongoing
developments and looks forward to an exciting
future in the new and improved Red Lion.
Development Update
Gomm Valley: The outline planning application
from Human+Nature, which was expected
before Christmas, is now expected to be
submitted to WDC by the end of January.
Agreement on traffic modelling between
respective traffic consultants seem to have been
reached. Ashwells: The plan is being revised
under the existing outline application although
another public consultation may be needed to
agree the changes. No timescale has been given.
Miles Green
Unitary Authority
The Government has ruled that the County
Council and all four District Councils are to be
abolished and replaced by a single
Buckinghamshire Council. This will come into
effect on 1 May 2020. The local elections due
this year have been postponed a year and
meanwhile a Shadow Authority, consisting of
all existing 202 county and district councillors
will be responsible for the transition, with
elections to the new council roles in May 2020.
Cllr Martin Tett, the current Chairman of the
County Council, has been appointed as the
leader of the Shadow Executive (9 County, 8
District Cllrs) by the Secretary of State, a
decision which was not supported by any of the
District Councils.
Any possible changes to boundaries will only
be considered after the new organisation is
established, but the Residents Society has
agreed to set up a working party to fact find the
pros/cons of boundary changes to unite P&TG.
There are both gains and losses in such a merger
with a lot of knock-on consequences for CWPC,
which also covers Loudwater and Flackwell
Heath, and for villages such as Penn St and
Winchmore Hill and areas like Knotty and Forty
Green, which are all in Penn Parish. Miles Green
New P&TGRS Grant Giving
Policy for Local Organisations
This is a reminder that any not-for-profit
organisation in Penn & Tylers Green that needs
financial or other assistance to meet its objectives
could make a grant application to P&TGRS.
Every year P&TGRS determines its grant-giving
budget for the coming year and welcomes
applications for grants to support local projects
that meet its grant-giving criteria. To be eligible:
1. The applicant must be a local organization,
charity, school or similar providing services of benefit
to the local community (grants are not made to
individuals).
2. The purpose of the grant request needs to be
clearly stated and must be in alignment with one or
more of the charitable objects of the Society.
3. The amount being requested must be clearly stated
and fully justified.
4. We would normally expect the applicant to raise
matched funding equivalent to the amount being
requested.
5. Grants are not made towards special events such
as conferences, seminars or for travel.
6. Applications from faith-based organisations are
not ruled out, but evidence will be sought that there is
no faith restriction in the relevant organisation’s
admission and employment policies, nor in relation
to the use of the money being requested.
The Grant Application Form and Policy is available
on the P&TGRS website at www.
pennandtylersgreen.org.uk/about-us/
residents-society/grants
When completed the application form should be
sent to info@pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
together with background quotations and other
supporting documents. Peter Miller
CHURCH NEWS
Holy Trinity & St Margaret's
A huge ‘thank you’ to all those who decorated
trees for our Christmas Tree Festival at the
beginning of December. We had over 300
visitors. The winner of the vote for the best
tree, amongst many amazing and inventive
ideas, was the Penn Bellringers with their
"Oranges and Lemons" tree - what a lovely idea
and a very interesting tree too. The real winner,
of course, was Wycombe Homeless Shelter who
received the £300 raised.
[photo of Bell Ringers Tree attached if
required – courtesy of Eddie]
It was lovely to see so many of you at our
various Christmas services and very special to
welcome the First and Middle Schools to St
Margaret’s just before the end of term for their
Carol and Christingle Services. The schools’
readers and singers were amazing.
I have recently, with the help of a friend, been
trying to change my guitar playing style. After
nearly 40 years of strumming along with hymns
and choruses I am attempting to insert some
more detail and texture to my playing. I have
discovered just how hard it is to change a habit
(or teach an old dog new tricks!). In changing
one aspect of my playing it seems that
everything has got a lot worse. The wisdom of
the period of Lent is an opportunity to reflect on
the bad habits we have adopted and become
familiar with in our own lives. Those habits are
often forced upon us by the conditioning and
expectations of others but after a while they
become part of us. If you cannot readily think
of anything in your life that could be improved
upon you could always ask a good friend or
family member for ideas! The classic ‘I am
giving up chocolate for Lent’ is doubtless
commendable in reducing one’s sugar intake
and weight but it has little to do with the
discipline and purpose of Lent. The origin of
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
giving something up was a privation that would
serve as a regular reminder of the discipline or
habit that one was trying to change. Thus it is
just as valid to take something up for Lent
where that may be spending more time with a
loved one or friends (although one may well
have to give something up to make time in the
diary – but the giving up is, of course, the means
and not the end).
Those seeking help in the discipline of
exercise or a hobby will join a gym or a class
for mutual help and encouragement. The
equivalent for Lent is to join a church where
you will be able to join other people who are
engaged in the discipline of discipline.
All of this is exactly the right preparation for
Easter where we reflect on the stunning image
of the Son of God, the saviour of the world,
hung, naked, on a Cross. This challenges just
about every notion we have of power, leadership
and authority. And that is exactly what God
intended. More about our Easter services in the
next edition.
On Friday February 15th at 8pm we are holding
a special meeting entitled, THE POWER OF
GOD’S WORD, to which anyone interested is
invited. Mr Graham Chewter will update us on
the work of the Trinitarian Bible Society (TBS),
which translates and distributes the Scriptures
all around the world. For example, the Society
is currently working on a Simte Bible, Simte
being a language spoken in northeastern India.
Also, work is continuing at present on a
revision of the 1909 ‘Reina-Valera’ Bible, which
is a Spanish translation first published in 1602,
and which possesses the same kind of major
landmark status as the King James Version does
in English. The importance of this project is
brought home to us when one considers that
around 437 million people in the world
currently have Spanish as their native language.
Here in the UK, if you ever see large Bible
verse posters displayed at railway stations. they
have probably been published and placed there
by the TBS.
On Wednesday February 27th at 8pm we
have a visit from Mr Gary Donaldson of the
Lanka Evangelical Fellowship of Churches,
who will speak on the work of this missionary
society in Sri Lanka. Life is not easy for Sri
Lankan Christians, who comprise some 8% of
the population. Many of them are impoverished
and have to endure persecution from their local
communities. Those who abuse the believers
often avoid apprehension because of a failure by
the Police to act on the Christians’ behalf. Do
join us to learn about the gospel witness of
Bible-believing churches in this needy part of
the world.
BETWEEN THE BIRTH OF CHRIST AND A
GRAVE NATIONAL CRISIS.
Some 700 years before Christ's birth Old
Testament Israel was going through a dreadful
national crisis, being attacked and humiliated by
the mighty empire of Assyria. It was a time of
utter darkness for the nation, but in the midst of
this crisis the coming of Christ was foretold.
This was Israel's true hope. Assyria's
suppression of Israel represents the spiritual
darkness of our own nation today in its
profound rebellion against God. The only
solution to this national crisis is repentance from
sin and faith in Him who is the Light of the
World, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Tylers Green Methodist Church
I would like to share with you the thoughts of
our minister, Rev Vida Foday, some five months
after taking pastoral charge of Tylers Green
Methodist Church.
For Anglican friends, a Methodist District is
somewhat similar to an Anglican Diocese, and a
Circuit is a number of churches within same
area of the District and grouped together for
administrative and practical purposes.
Vida has the pastoral care of three other
churches at Holmer Green, Downley and Cryers
Hill.Vida writes: "As a widow, family support
means a lot to me. Moving to the High
Wycombe Circuit in the Northampton District
was good for keeping me in contact with my
family in West London. The move has been
challenging due to the increased number of
churches in my pastoral charge and the rural
setting, which I have not been used to.
However, this experience has taught me that
God is bigger than our challenges. I have been
overwhelmed by the welcome, love and support
given me by the District Chair, Superintendent,
circuit ministers, leadership team,
supernumeraries and the circuit congregations".
WOODLAND
& GREEN SPACES
The offer of coffee and mince pies brought
out a good number of volunteers on the
first work party of the year in January.
Some new faces appeared and helped us
magnificently to clear a long stretch of the
boundary of Farther Barn Field...
Our target is to clear the fences here to do some
essential maintenance by replacing posts and
setting the wire in order to make the field secure
for cattle grazing. Hopefully in late summer this
year. There is still more to do and all help is
welcome. Some volunteers are available
mid-week so we are going to hold some
sessions to take advantage of this. A couple of
hours of healthy outdoor exercise with friendly
people and much cheaper than a gym
membership! Participants are surprised at how
much is achieved in a session. If interested in
helping email to commonwoodvolunteer@
gmail.com (note that there is no ‘s’ after
volunteer). Indicate if you are able to do
midweek sessions.
The next weekend sessions are on February
2nd and 3rd . The March session will be held on
the 9th and 10th as we are too short of
supervisors the first weekend. We plan to
provide some refreshment at the sessions.
I have been out clearing some of the paths of
leaf litter. If this is not carried out the paths
would disappear. It is surprising how peoples’
behaviour changes. When covered with leaves
they keep to a narrow strip in the centre but after
clearance people can walk more comfortably
side by side. Also fewer sloppy leaves to track
through after rain! Brian, Russell and myself
have been out with the brush cutters ‘trimming
back the sides of paths. This will continue
through the spring.
We felled a large oak on Boundary ride when
the tree split in windy conditions. With the
assistance of Andy , our helpful tree surgeon we
have cut out two posts from the stem. We plan
to cut out more so the tree is not wasted. These
will be gateposts for the field. They will last
longer than pressure treated and are ‘free’. We
constantly monitor trees along the paths for
safety and any evidence of rot or fungal growth
puts that tree into a closer monitoring status. We
felled a beech which had rotted half wat through
. Unfortunately the unpredictability of the rot
inside caused the tree to twist as it fell and
ended up at right angles to the direction
planned. In the middle of the wood it is not o
much of an issue. Near to a house it could be
expensive!
Please be aware we do not allow taking of
firewood. We are looking at providing this at a
nominal cost but we depend on volunteers and it
would need a big commitment. Also we would
like to do this without vehicles tracking through
the wood.
This time of year people lose things like
gloves . Anything we find is usually hung from
a tree near to the place it is found and after a
while I will place it near the bench at post 3.
At this time of year the undergrowth has died
down and scents are strong . Often I meet
people whose dog has run off after something.
Muntjac deer have very sharp horns and will
use them if cornered. I know of at least one dog
that has died from an injury and another that
had a puncture wound. If your dog has a strong
chase or hunting instinct remember that the
wood is also for wildlife so please keep them
close and let the wildlife have their space.
VV HISTORY:
TWIXTLANDS FIVE
From time to time the Residents Society
receives enquiries from people outside the
immediate area, usually concerning
matters of local and social history often
linked to their own family stories...
One such enquiry, received just before
Christmas, concerned the final resting place of
one Ellen Cicely Wilkinson who with others
lived in Penn Bottom in the Autumn of 1939.
Now, I imagine Ellen was not typical of those
that enjoyed the rural atmosphere of Penn
Bottom between the wars, she was the MP for
Jarrow, had led the Jarrow March and was a
founder member of the British Communist
Party, she had travelled to Russia and met Leon
Trotsky, and following the Labour Party
landslide in 1945 she became Minister for
Education and died in office in 1947. Although
keeping a London flat she must have retained
fond memories of Penn as she is buried in Holy
Trinity Penn Street.
However, there is still more to be told, as
Ellen shared the house in Penn Bottom - known
as Twixtlands - with other notable socialists of
the era.
Probably best known was Herbert Stanley
Morrison, he of the Morrison shelter widely
promoted and used in WW2. One-time leader of
the London County Council, he became Home
Secretary in the Coalition Government
1940-1945 and then Deputy Prime Minister in
Clement Attlee’s 1945-1951 Labour
Government.
The third Labour MP present that Autumn
was John Jagger who had represented
Manchester Clayton since 1935, a committed
trade unionist he became Morrison’s PPS in
1940 until his death in a road accident 1942.
This accident took place in Clay Street Penn
Bottom when his auto-cycle collided with a
motor car driven by a local farmer, Jagger was
on his way to Beaconsfield station to catch a
London train.
The remaining two residents were Anne &
Doris Wilkinson, sister & sister-in-law to Ellen,
Anne was a staunch supporter of her sister
throughout her political career both sharing
various London addresses for many years.
So, within Twixtlands had resided political
figures of considerable national & international
reputation and there had been iconic visitors as
well Mahatma Gandhi among them…and yes it
still stands today as Little Penn Farmhouse
This article would not have
been possible without reference
to the “1939 Register”, it
provided the Government with a
snapshot of the civilian
population of England & Wales
just after the outbreak of WW2.
It was taken on 29th
September 1939 and was used
in the introduction of Identity
Cards & Ration Books. It later
played an important role in the
launch of the NHS. It can be
XMAS CURRY!
P&TG Lawn Tennis Club
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Looking back on the last of 2018, the Christmas
holidays were really sociable at the club with
lots of fun events, and a bit of competition
thrown into the festive selection box too. The
Tuesday morning ladies kicked off the festivities
in style with a pot luck luncheon in the
clubhouse. Many thanks to those that joined us
for a Christmas Curry at Mr India; the food was
absolutely delicious and it was great to see so
many people enjoying themselves. The last
Club night of the year was held in fancy dress
with mulled wine keeping everyone warm
courtside. In between Christmas and New Year
we held our annual Over vs Under 30s
competition, which was as hotly contested as
ever. Ladies had a closely fought battle with the
‘Overs’ winning 13-12. Ollie Godwin was
injured early in the day which left the men’s
‘Unders’ with an uphill struggle. Men’s ‘Overs’
triumphed 18-7 and everyone really enjoyed the
day. The team tennis on Sunday 30th December
was won by the parent and child team and I’m
reliably informed it was fabulous to see ‘club
legends’ Sam Carey, Craig Smith and Matt
Harrison back playing at the club.
We are now looking forward to Spring, and
winning their opening 10 games in the league.
Our girls section and our first ever ladies team
are trailblazing the area! With girls represented
at U10/12/14/16 and adult it has never been
Off the pitch we are also hoping for progress.
We have now appealed the decision to not allow
SCHOOLS
NEWS ROUND UP
Tylers Green Middle School
Year Group Trips and Events:
Year 3: went on their first school trip with
TGMS to the Bucks County Museum where
they were greeted by staff and split into classes
to visit the different museums. 3R started at the
Roald Dahl Museum where they enjoyed lots of
interactive activities. The children crawled
through Fantastic Mr Fox’s tunnel, went inside
a giant peach and even got shrunk like Mike
Teevee! 3BG began their exciting day looking
around exhibits to do with the local area. In the
afternoon the classes swapped round. All had a
wonderful day, and followed their experience by
a newspaper report for their homework task.
Year 4 News - Egyptian Day: Year 4 had a
wonderful day learning about life in Ancient
Egypt. The children made Egyptian flat breads
which they had designed using ingredients that
would have been used 4000 years ago. They
also had the opportunity to learn about Egyptian
music and learn and perform a traditional dance
from a professional belly dancer. The children
really enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the
past through hands on experience. The British
Museum Earlier this month, both 4K and 4F
were also lucky enough to travel to London to
visit the British Museum. This was a great end
to a thoroughly enjoyable topic. The adults who
attended the trip were very proud of the
children, who were very well behaved and
enthusiastic. The children learnt a lot from being
able to see mummies and other artefacts from
the Ancient Egyptian era in person.
Year 5 update by Ella Hardy: Year 5 have
been really excited to perform the play ‘How
Christmas Came To Be’ which is about how
Christmas started, what Christmas was like
before Jesus was born, and about the present
Christmas that we know and love today. They
worked very hard on all the songs, dances and
lines. We hope whoever came to see it really
enjoyed it. For the Christingle, there are a lot of
songs to learn, which students deeply care
about. Learning a lot of songs is tricky, but year
5 is very motivated, well done to everyone. If
you think that year 5 couldn`t do anything else
Christmassy… then think again! Each student
created their own fantastic Christmas story!
Along with creative fantastic illustrations, the
year is publishing a modern tale of Christmas.
which I’m sure will be amazing.
Year 6 News: Year 6 made a great start to the
year. We based lots of our study on the book
'Journey to the River Sea' By Eva Ibbotson and
made our own journey to a rain forest when we
visited the Living Rain Forest in Thatcham. We
also made an early start to our study of World
War 1 topic for next term due to the offer of a
special visit to the exhibition in Tylers Green
Village Hall. The children took part in activities
and learnt about the local area during 1914. The
first major homework project of 'Countries' has
now been handed in and we are very impressed
22 www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

y the effort and time spent on them by many of
the children. Vanessa Pinkney. Headteacher
Tylers Green First School
All of us at TGFS would like to wish villagers a
very Happy & Healthy New Year for 2019.
We hope everyone had a relaxing and
enjoyable break over Christmas and New Year.
We have started 2019 with enthusiasm. The
children and staff are looking forward to the
activities ahead over the coming terms.
I hope that everyone who attended our
Christmas Fair last term enjoyed meeting our
parents and staff and had a good time. It is
always nice to welcome members of the
community to our school fairs: we appreciate
you taking the time to support us.
Our very successful Christmas Nativity plays
were enjoyed by all. We were also lucky to have
a visit from Santa on party day when he spent
the afternoon with each class in turn. Everyone
enjoyed talking to Santa again and playing party
games together after the hard work of the term.
We look forward to the new term and
anticipate the upcoming activities.Our parent
volunteer reading mentors are currently being
trained by ABC 2 Read before they start their
work with the children this term.
We had our annual pantomime on the first
afternoon of term last week, performed by a
travelling theatre company in school. A good
time was had by all and it made a lovely
afternoon for the children returning to school.
Having the visiting theatre company provides
us with an opportunity to introduce the children
to a live theatre/ pantomime. Teachers often
help by having a small role in the production!
We had a visit from the Toy Workshop for
Year 1 when the children study and handle toys
from other times- this always causes some
nostalgia amongst some of us on the staff team
and the parents. The children thoroughly enjoy
this opportunity. As always we were well
supported by parent helpers who helped us to
make the day run as smoothly as possible.
We will also have a One World Week in the
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice February/March 2019
lead up to half term when we will learn about
lots of new and exciting places. The children
always enjoy our themed weeks and we always
find time to share what we have done with each
other in an assembly or by walking around the
school and visiting each other’s classrooms.
During One World Week we will have an
African drumming workshop which enables all
the children to participate and have a great deal
of fun playing the drums led by an expert.
We will also havepancake races on Shrove
Tuesday this year. Last year this fell during our
half term so this year I am hoping for good
weather and some fun racing with the pancakes!
Last term also saw the successful launch of
our school lottery which we invite members of
the community to support. You may have
received a leaflet through your front door or
been approached by a relative who has a child at
the school. There is a weekly prize as well as
other larger prizes and this is a very simple way
to support your local village school. From
tickets sold over the past 4 weeks, since TGFS's
first lottery draw on 15th December, £106.80
has been raised. We've also had 4 local winners
so far each winning between £20 and £21.30.
Each draw takes place weekly on a Saturday:
tickets must be purchased by the Wednesday to
December at St Margaret’s delighting parents,
grandparents and friends, our Christmas
Nativity play was full of charm, along with
several cameo performances worthy of at least a
Golden Globe or two.
Earlier in the week, our 2-year-olds at Little
Oaks One had taken part in their ‘sing-along’
Nativity, and those at Little Oaks Beaconsfield
performed their very own version in the nursery
hall at Forty Green. Surrounded by shepherds
and angels, we all headed into the Christmas
break with a smile.
As reported in December’s VV, we again
supported the local DASH Charity. On 18th
December we delivered 46 wrapped boxes of
Christmas gifts to those living in a nearby
refuge. Our families are incredibly generous,
going above and beyond every year to
contribute to this worthwhile cause. A huge
thank you to them all.
This is a term filled with cheerful celebrations
to help us through the winter months before
Spring arrives. The children will learn about
Chines New Year, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s
Day and Holi. Ruthie Pocock
PLASTIC
FREE P&TG
We hope you had a great Christmas and
that your new year resolutions include
helping us try and save the planet!
The key idea for 2019 is
to REDUCE our
consumption of single
use packaging overall.
Recycling is not enough, we need to make
efforts to avoid single use plastic all together.
Our local butcher Joe Gleeson has started
charging for plastic carrier bags and the next
step is to phase out the plastic vegetable bags in
favour of paper bags. By using our local shops,
we are more in control of what we use and what
we waste (including food).
We would like to thank the Holy Trinity
Church for letting us display a Christmas tree
decorated with the lunchbox rubbish from
TGMS. Whilst we did not win the competition,
it did provide us with the opportunity to show
how much food comes wrapped in single use
plastic in one single lunch sitting…
What’s our next plastic challenge? We are
limited by our own free time and so would like
to welcome volunteers to help us make quicker
progress. If you are interested, please call us on
812065.
What’s your next plastic challenge? There
are so many things that need to be done, it can
become overwhelming, so maybe start by trying
a few simple things:
• When going out, try to remember to refuse a
plastic straw. Most of the time, I think about it
once my drink is on the table and then it is too
late, which is so annoying!
• Make sure you keep shopping bags and
plastic containers in your car, so that you can
say NO to bags. When buying meat or fish from
the counter, you can use your own containers
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice February/March 2019
rather than have it wrapped in multiple layers of
plastic, or choose produce without plastic wrap
• Switch from soap dispensers to a bar of
soap, it is so simple!
Share your ideas with us: https://www.
THE PHOTOGRAPHIC
LURE OF
COMMON WOOD
Local resident, Scott Barrett wrote to VV
recently about photographing flora and
fauna in Common Wood
Scott is a stay-at-home dad, having worked
many years in the aerospace industry, and lives
with his wife, who works in the city, and 13
year old daughter who attends school locally.
Living on Common Wood Lane, they get to
see all the walkers, joggers, dog walkers and
equestrians go past on their way to Common
Wood. The family love to walk through
Common Wood,
enjoying the
peacefulness and
beauty, one of the
many things they
love about living
in Penn.
As a keen
photographer,
Scott is a member
of the Chalfonts &
Gerrards Cross
Camera Club,
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice February/March 2019
which regularly visits local woods to take
pictures of the flora and fauna.
Common Wood is a great local resource that
the club frequents often. 'It’s a beautiful wood
with varied flora that provides interesting
Winter scenes. Bluebells in the spring, filtered
light of summer to the changing colours of the
leaves and mushrooms in the autumn'.
Scott reports a recent experience in Common
Wood. 'This Autumn several of us were taking
pictures of Mushrooms when we bumped into
Mike Morley who invited us to share what we
do in Common Wood. We take pictures for all to
enjoy and leave the forest the way we found it.
(Inset are a couple of favourites from that
excursion), when we returned a couple of days
later, we were dismayed to find that many of the
mushrooms that we had been photographing
had disappeared. It was a huge disappointment
as we were trying to capture their growth and
changing structure. If you use the woods,
please be aware of others who may be using the
woods for different reasons, and if you see
people gathering mushrooms ask them politely
to leave them for others to enjoy, and to
preserve the biodiversity of the woodlands'
'When we moved to Penn I joined the
Chalfonts & Gerrards Cross Camera Club. It is
a small but friendly club that meets every
Thursday evening at 8:00 in the Gerrards Cross
Memorial Centre. Our programme includes
talks, technical discussions,
workshops and outings.
Several of our club members
live in the local area and if
photography is your thing, or
you just want to learn more, we
would love to have you join the
club too.'
BRIGHT IDEAS TO KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE IN THE DARK EVENINGS
Protect your home against opportunist burglars by remembering to protect your home when the clocks
go back and the nights draw in. Burglars see the longer winter nights as an opportunity to increase their
criminal activities, so to avoid becoming a victim of burglary the Chiltern District Council & South Bucks
District Councils Joint Community Safety team is encouraging residents to take some simple steps to help
protect their home:
• Use a timer switch to turn on lights and a radio to give the impression someone is home
• Keep valuables and other electronic equipment such as laptops out of sight
• Security mark valuables with a UV pen and register them with www.immobilise.com
• Double lock UPVC doors or use dead locks on solid doors
• Keep all spare keys, including car keys, away from the front door and out of sight to avoid them being
‘fished’ through the letter box
• Keep windows locked with the key and keep it out of sight
• Don’t leave packaging of expensive items purchased on view as an advertisement to thieves
Neighbourhood Police Officers will be patrolling in residential areas and if they believe a property is at risk
of being burgled, they will pop a ‘Here’s a bright idea’ card through the door along with contact details for
further crime prevention advice.
Residents can pick up security advice by following @TVP_ChiltSBucks and @csafetycdcsbdc on Twitter. For
regular updates on crime and disorder in your area you can sign up to Thames Valley Alert.
For further advice on crime reduction contact Chiltern District Council and South Bucks District Council’s
ORIENTEERING
IN PENN WOOD &
COMMON WOOD
Bingo! After 10 minutes of thrashing through
the vegetation, Control No. 7 appears in a small
clearing. This orange and white flag is the
seventh checkpoint on a course at a local
orienteering event.
Dashing over to the control, each competitor
tags the timing unit with a small timing chip
they carry, and then with a quick look at the
map, it’s off to find the next checkpoint through
the woods.
Welcome to the exciting and addictive sport
of orienteering, a blend of navigation and
treasure hunting (and cross-country running for
the keen runners). Course planners hide a series
of control flags around the woods and each
competitor races to find them, in order, using a
detailed map of the woods, showing each of the
controls' locations.
If you fancy a go at this fast growing sport,
Thames Valley Orienteering Club is organising
an event on Sunday 17th February 2019 in Penn
Wood and Common Wood. No experience is
necessary to have a go. You can run, walk, or
just go at your own pace, and there will be a
range of courses for all ages and abilities,
including families, children and runners.
The challenge is choosing your route between
each checkpoint, using a special waterproof
orienteering map of the woods, which you keep
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice February/March 2019
as a souvenir. You can follow paths or navigate
through the woods, using earth banks and
vegetation to guide you. All will be marked on
your map to help you decide!
The event is a great opportunity to explore
Penn Wood, which is one of the largest ancient
woodlands in the Chilterns.
The courses will range from 1.5km to around
10km, with the shorter ones normally taking
around 30 to 75 minutes to complete. Children
love the buzz of finding the controls, so why not
have a go as a family. You can tackle a course
individually, or go round in a group with family
or friends. Plenty of help will be available to get
you started. When you return to the finish, your
timing chip will be downloaded and you’ll
receive a print out of your split times between
the checkpoints.
For the shorter courses, it’s just £8.50 to
pre-enter (either individually or as a group) or
slightly more to come along and enter on the
day. The longer courses have a slightly higher
entry fee too. All the information is on TVOC’s
website at www.tvoc.org.uk, or on the Facebook
event page at goo.gl/Sto4q6
Just don’t forget your sense of adventure!

VILLAGE
EXPOSITION
Village Voice February/March 2019
I must start with two ENORMOUS "thank
you"s: firstly, to the many organisations who
turned out and put a lot of effort into their
displays; and secondly to all those of you who
came on such a horrid, miserable, damp January
day. Most of the organisations I spoke to were
pleased that they had several interested people
– so if you expressed an interest, do follow it up
and go and try them out. I know I came away
with a Gerrards Cross Sailing Club winter talks
leaflet and there are one of two I’m determined
to go to and I can assure you that whilst I like
sailing, I am hopeless when it comes to waves
higher than an inch or two (or centimetre or two
to those of you younger than I!).
Many visitors left saying that they had no
idea that so much went on in the village and it’s
surroundings and I know that I was surprised
when I started working out who to contact. We
are really, very, very fortunate to live in such a
community so please do make the most of it and
do spare an hour or two a month to help keep it
that way if you possibly can.
Hopefully, this is something we can repeat in
a few years’ time but in the meantime, if you
want publicity for your organisation, do send
copy to voice@pennandtylersgreen.org.uk and
if you are sitting at home wondering what to do,
read this magazine and also either visit the
Village Hall or look at tylersgreenvillagehall.
co.uk for details of the many activities and
classes that take place there.
Finally, a big thank you from the Evening WI,
whose hat I wore in organising this event under
our campaign to Alleviate Loneliness, to the
Trustees of the Village Hall who provided the
hall for free and to the Penn & Tylers Green
Residents’ Society for helping us promote the
event. Hilary Forbes, Penn & Tylers Green Evening WI
CLUBS
& SOCIETIES
Evening WI
Firstly, a date for your diary: Saturday 30th
March at 2.30pm is our next Craft Fair in the
Village Hall. Come and see what you might be
tempted by and enjoy a cuppa with a homemade
cake. There will no doubt be Easter and
Mother’s Day gifts.
January 2019 brought with it our membership
renewal and instead of welcoming an outside
speaker we enjoy a members’ evening. This
meeting gives us a chance to catch up with
friends after the festive period and to get to
know some of our newer members. We also
usually manage to have a few fun games which
result in much laughter. Members are pictured
laughing at the Dingbat answers. Our
programme of speakers starts in February with a
talk on Pets As Therapy followed in March by
Nurses Never Run.
In Janaury, we ran the Village Expo, which
was a great success (see page 31 for details). As
a village it is quite astonishing to see the number
and diversity of activities on offer. Surely there
is something for everyone and the New Year is a
good time to try something new? There are a lot
of friendly and welcoming people in our
community, just waiting to include you.
Our regular smaller group activities are back
in full swing: daytime and evening knit and
natter, book club and our popular chomp and
chatter. Further opportunities to participate can
be made in events organised by our County
Federation, ranging from craft workshops and
theatre outings to science investigation and
discovery days. Do come and join us – a warm
welcome awaits you. Pat Hedley, 812645, email:
pennandtylersgreeneveningwi@gmail.com, web:
pennandtylersgreeneveningwi.weebly.com
Morning WI
We started 2019 with a talk on the History of
Royal Flying in Janaury. In February we plan a
variety of activities including a fish and chip
lunch, a Bring and Buy and a Beetle Drive.
In March we will learn about brass rubbing.
In April our talk is entitled From Cylinder to the
CD and Beyond which sounds intriguing.
Our craft group are continuing with their
monthly meetings, where they are learning new
skills from each other. It is amazing how many
talents there are amongst our members.
Soon we shall start planning our extra
activities trips so when the weather improves
we can have some days out.
Should you be interested in
coming to a meeting we are at the
Penn & Tylers Green Sports
&Social Club on the third
Wednesday of the month 10.00
for 10.15am. or phone me on the
number below. A welcome awaits
you. Sheila Sparrow 812163
Guides, Brownies &
Rainbows
Sadly this is my last report for
Tylers Green Guiding as I am
standing down as District
Commissioner. I shall still be
assisting in a local Brownie Unit
32 www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

and remain involved in Adult (Trefoil) Guiding.
At present nobody has been appointed to
replace me. Volunteers are always needed in
Guiding especially in Tylers Green. We have 6
active Units all run by enthusiastic volunteers
who give up their time to prepare, train and run
the evenings. They always need more support
to enable them to provide a varied programme.
We have a thriving Rainbow Unit which is
always full and sadly girls waiting to join do not
always get offered a place, clearly it would be
great if we could open another unit in the area.
If you are interested in giving just a small
amount of time to keep Guiding going in the
village please look at the girl guiding website
www.girlguiding.uk.org for more information.
Units are now busy preparing for the new
term using the new programme and most Units
are full though there are spaces in a Brownie
Unit. Brownies is for girls aged 7-10 years and
if interested visit the guiding website www.
girlguiding.uk.org.
Kingswood Adult Guiding is thriving with 30
members, not all active in Guiding, meeting on
a monthly basis. The next meeting is a 3 course
meal cooked by members of Trefoil.
My thanks to all Guiding volunteers in Tylers
Green for their continuing support. Sue Stephens
Village Care
Village Care wishes all our clients, volunteers
and gardeners a good New Year.
We are in desperate need of two more
telephonists to run the Village Care telephone
for one morning a month. If you could help us,
without obligation, please contact Gillian on
815693. If anyone would like to drive for
Village Care once a month, please contact Rob
on 817893.
We shall hold our increasingly popular Tea
Party for clients and volunteers on Friday 17th
May, at 2.45 pm in the TG Village Hall. We are
very keen for more of our clients to come and
join us; there is no charge and transport can be
arranged. You will receive an invitation, so
please come – everyone enjoyed it last year.
event will be on Sunday afternoon, 9th June,
Please consider volunteering for Village Care
– it is a worthwhile charity, and we cannot do
without you. We are a good team, and much
appreciated. Peter Sachs, 257823
Christmas Post: We had another good Scout
Post in the run up to Christmas delivering cards
around the villages. After many years we have
managed to fine tune procedures but there is
still a lot of organising and work that goes on
behind the scenes. We have a large number of
volunteer helpers who make it all work. Thanks
again to you all. Our post boxes were looked
after by the following local businesses: The
Village Hall, Kings Ride Supermarket, Filippos
Hairdressers, Lansdales Pharmacy, Joe
Gleeson's Butcher, Londis Supermarket and JJ’s
Delicatessen. Thank you all for continuing to
support the group. We would also like to pass
on a big thank you Stephen, Morna, Emily and
all at The JNP Partnership for sponsoring Scout
Post- we really appreciate your support &
generosity.
In May this year we are giving the boys & girls
of the group the chance to participate in a
special Bucks County Camp in North Bucks.
The Scout Post proceeds will help to finance
this event.
Scout Jumble: Save the Date: Our next
Jumble Sale is on Saturday 6th April at the
Village Hall. Doors open at 1.00 pm (open
Friday evening for receiving jumble 6.00-
9.00pm). If anyone can help at any time over
the weekend they will be warmly welcomed.
See posters around the village nearer the time.
We hope to see our jumble regulars and new
faces on the day. Please come along and bag a
Dear VV,
I thought the readers of Village Voice would
like to see this photo of Herbert Druce taken by
my husband Arshak, the day before his 104th
birthday. He is still as cheerful as ever and in
remarkable good health for his age.
Best wishes, Edwina Sarkissian
PAT DANCER'S
NEWS & VIEWS
I hope you all enjoyed
Christmas as much as I did.
Having overdone the 'trying
to please everyone', in the
past, I determined to have a
quieter arrangement and stay
home. It worked out perfectly
and without any stress, and
my family all coming happily for Boxing Day.
New Year was also a peaceful time and the
customary fireworks were spectacular
throughout the world, despite uncertainties
about Brexit and unsettled politics.
In our community we look forward to village
events planned. I did not know about the Penn
& Tylers Green Exhibition in the Village Hall
on January 15, with apologies for not
publicising it.
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
On a more personal experience and reflective
note, I pass on a "tip for the forgetful!". When
short term memory needs reinforcing, it is
helpful to do as Americans do when introduced
for the first time. They repeat aloud, your name
they have just been given, and then their own
name while they shake hands, so then you will
remember theirs better. I use this idea when
going upstairs for something, and then
forgetting what I went there for... So, I say out
loud: "I am just going up for my glasses, and
then it will stay in my mind!" Some of you
may remember that Pelmanism , devised by The
Pelman Institute some years ago was a system
of training the memory.
Maybe this is a time when it should be
revived, as stress is causing anxiety when there
is so much happening. Positive thinking is very
important to one's peace of mind. Maybe you
have read the book by Vincent Scott Peale.
Next time I am going to write about hearing
problems, and meantime, my best wishes to all
readers. Pat Dancer
IN MEMORY:
NICK CRICHTON
December 17th 2018 was a sad day for
the village and in particular Penn and
Tylers Green Cricket Club. It saw the
passing of one of its most influential
members, Nick Crichton, who lived in the
village for over 30 years and was an
honorary life member of the club.
Nick was remembered by many national
newspapers for his pioneering work as a judge,
where he founded the UK’s first Family Drug
and Alcohol Court (FDAC). The members of
P&TGCC are more likely to recall his fine
wicket-keeping and middle order batting as well
as the jokes and stories he would tell to the slip
cordon between balls. He was oft to be seen
completing the cryptic crossword and listening
to Test Match Special whilst waiting to bat in
his trademark shabby hat and with his beloved
antique bat! He played for the club for over 30
years in a golden period seeing P&TGCC win
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice February/March 2019
NICK WAS A FAMILIAR
FIGURE IN THE VILLAGE,
WALKING HIS SPANIELS IN
COMMON WOOD AND
THE SURROUNDING
FIELDS.
many titles and even playing host to Middlesex
County Cricket Club.
Our members aged between 30 and 45 will
undoubtedly remember Nick as their first cricket
coach. Every Thursday evening throughout the
summer for 15 years or so, Nick could be found
in the bottom corner of the cricket ground in the
village, encouraging 6 and 7-year-old children
and bubbling over with excitement when a four
was hit or a catch taken (for which there would
be a lollipop received after the session).
Nick will be sorely
missed by many members,
but the dynasty continues
as his eldest son, Simon,
has taken over coaching the
youngsters in the village
with the same enthusiasm
of his father some 30 years
previously. Most of the
club’s coaches and many of
our 1st XI were coached by
Nick as youngsters and
three of his grandsons are
now amongst the junior
members, through them
and through all the children
involved with the club
Nick’s legacy will
continue.
Youth Enquiry Service
Youth Enquiry Service is a local charity that provides free support,
information and counselling to young people. We are a confidential and
friendly service, based in the centre of town. You can visit us in our drop in,
contact us through our website, or book an appointment. We can work with
anyone who is over 13 and under 25 years old, no question or issue is too big
or too small. We appreciate how hard it can be to open up to someone, so
we are here to help you and will never judge. We like to think we are doing a
good job as we’ve been supporting young people since 1982!
Everyone working in the drop in or counselling service is a volunteer. Some
volunteers also do outreach work, and offer counselling in schools and
colleges. We fundraising tirelessly all year round from plant sales to quiz
nights as we receive no funding from local or central government. Any
donations we raise are used to continue our work with young people.
We are always looking for volunteers to help us staff our drop in, training
provided, we also offer placements to trainee counsellors. We have room on
our executive committee too! Please contact us for more information if you
are interested in volunteering with us.
The Hazlemere Fete: Save The Date
The next Hazlemere Fete will be held on the August Bank Holiday Monday
as is traditional, in the grounds of Sir William Ramsay School. The date for
your diary is Monday, 26th August 2019.
In the last edition of VV I appealed for pictures of local historical interest
that we could digitize and print to an exhibition standard. This appeal has
resulted in a real treasure trove of pictures related not just to High
Wycombe but Penn and the wider surrounding area. If you have any
material that you think visitors would be intrigued to see, please contact
the VV Editor. I am hoping that the historical content will be greater than
before although I also welcome offers of digitized Art for exhibiting in our
standard A4 format. Many of the Artists who exhibited last year have
already been in dialogue about offering more work this year. There is no
particular theme but there may be some panels given over to obvious
categories, such as Animals or Fantasy or Common Wood depending on
entries received. Following the Hurricane and Spitfire flypast, we hope for
something special again if conditions permit. Bob Digby
On this spot above Amersham seven
Christians were burnt to death in the
early 16th century. Their ‘crime’ was
reading the Bible in English and
believing its teachings. Their
persecutors were the church leaders
of the time. Their deaths show us
why the Protestant Reformation was
so necessary.
