These people are all up for the
Thousands will turn out
for the 45th anniversary
of the City2Surf on
March 24. Reporter
Sophie Cornish spoke
to some of the people
who have entered the
fun run
Karen Young, Somerfield
– This year’s City2Surf will be
the first ever running event Mrs
Young has participated in. In
June last year, she joined the
Energise Health and Fitness
running club and
has been training
for the 6km
event through
a 12-week
programme. Mrs
Young runs with
her club once
a week while
trying to fit in her
Karen
own training. “I
Young
think it will be
achievable (the 6km),” she said.
Mark Winsley, 49 – Mr
Winsley has tackled the 14km
City2Surf event before, but this
year he will run the 6km. That’s
because his nine-year-old son,
Felix, will be running with
him, along with his partner,
Janelle Clark. The father and
son have been “hiking around
the hills and jogging around
the parks” to prepare for the
event. Felix is not a novice when
it comes to running events,
having participated in the Kids’
son to do it (City2Surf) a few
years ago – he was a bit older.
Felix watched it and said I’m
going do that papa,” said Mr
Rebecca Barrell, 44,
Spreydon – In the past Ms
Barrell has completed the Buller
Gorge Half Marathon. Now she
wants to get back into running.
Ms Barrell has set herself the goal
of completing the 14km event
this year and has been training
using the 10-week programme
offered by City2Surf. “I walk a
lot up the hills, but I wanted to
improve my running again and I
thought this was a good goal . . .
I’ve done 10km in the past, years
Judith McInnes, 77,
Christchurch Central – Mrs
McInnes, who is retired, says her
participation in the 14km event
is “not a hardcore thing, just
for fun.” It will not be her first
time in the City2Surf, having
completed the
event six or
seven times
previously,
both walking
and jogging.
“I do both
walking and
jogging and
it’s just a
challenge.”
