Welcome To Tallahassee
Tallahassee is the capital of Florida and a beautiful town known for its
rolling hills, parks, and canopy roads. In this booklet, you will find some
helpful information about the area, and there is an interactive, digital
version available at HumRealEstate.com.
“Tallahassee” is an Apalachee word meaning “old town” or “abandoned fields," because
the area was an abandoned Apalachee village when it was found in 1656.
The Southeast
According to the United
States Geological Survey,
the Southeast consists of:
Alabama
Arkansas
Florida
Georgia
Kentucky
Louisiana
Mississippi
North Carolina
South Carolina
Tennessee
Puerto Rico
Virgin Islands
Virginia
Florida's population is just
about double that of any
other southeastern state.
Florida
"Florida" is Spanish for "land of flowers," and was
named by the Spanish conquistador Ponce de Leon on
his search for the Fountain of Youth.
It is such a large state that if it were its own country, it
would rank in the top 20 economies in the world.
Although Florida is known as the "Sunshine State," it
does get a lot of rain in the summer, but the beautiful
beaches make up for it. Due to the slender shape of the
state, you are never too far from a beach!
Tallahassee is the proud capital of the state, while
Jacksonville is the largest city, and Miami is the biggest
metropolis.
Although Tallahassee is widely known for its rolling
hills, Florida is mostly flat and known for its aquifer - a
semi-permeable layer of water-bearing rock
underneath the state. This is important to the
ecosystem and provides drinking water to about 10
million people.
State Motto: In God We Trust
State Animal: Panther
State Beverage: Orange Juice
State Bird: Mockingbird
State Flower: Orange Blossom
State Gem: Moonstone
State Pie: Key Lime Pie
Walt Disney World in Orlando draws more visitors than any other
attraction in the world.
Tallahassee
Tallahassee is in the panhandle of Florida, and part
of Leon County. The locals refer to the area as the
"Big Bend," because of the location in the state's
shape.
As the capital, Tallahassee is the home to many
government sites including the Florida Supreme
Court and the Governor's Mansion. In addition, its
known for the scientific research performed at the
National High Magnetic Field Laboratory near
Florida State University.
The Florida State University Seminoles have many
stadiums and fields for their numerous sports
programs. Football season is always exciting as
Doak Campbell Stadium holds over 80,000 people!
Tallahassee is also home to the Tallahassee
Community College Eagles and the Florida A&M
University Rattlers.
It is believed that
an agreement could
not be reached as
to whether or not
Pensacola or Saint
Augustine should be
the capital of
Florida, so they
chose Tallahassee
because it was in
the middle.
Tallahassee has been awarded the All-America
City Award from the National Civic League a couple
of times, and is a city full of art and culture - from
the Railroad Square Art Park to museums and
frequent festivals. For information on Tallahassee's
art, dance, film, history, music, theatre, and
literature scenes, visit www.tallahasseearts.org
Another amazing resource is the city’s website,
www.talgov.com. Here you can find the DigiTally
app to help you find parks, navigate bus routes, pay
your utilities, and much more. If you can’t find what
you’re looking for there, another great resource is
