Restaurant Making a Difference 

Walk into Namji in Wolverton and you’ll be greeted by one of the friendliest smiles you could wish for. 

Real Vision 

Naseem Khan, owner of this small, welcoming restaurant is clearly proud of her achievements and so she should 

be. Despite having no experience in running a restaurant, Naseem had a vision. She’d seen the Market Square 

premises standing empty when she approached the landlord. Despite the risk, she took on the lease to open to 

favourable reviews in January 2017. Since then her reputation for providing excellent food and service has grown 

even more. 

Aah the Flavours 

The food takes on a Punjabi influence with plenty of flavoursome spices, lentils, vegetables and meats. Many of 

the dishes are cooked for hours to enhance the diner’s experience. There are the traditional influences that we 

love, while other dishes come 

from takes on family favourites 

and the Kenyan seaside. 

Naseem explains that the 

service may be slower than 

some because every dish is 

home-cooked to order to 

ensure the freshness and 

flavours are at their best. It’s 

definitely worth the wait. 

Warm, Authentic Surroundings 

The décor and setting are warm and authentic but it is Naseem 

who really makes the experience as she stands front of house 

welcoming and serving customers. With only eight tables you 

will be looked after properly and almost feel at home. Book to 

make sure you get a table. 

Community Venture 

While Naseem has a passion to share the delicious food that she 

grew up with as a child in Kenya, she is also eager to give back 

to the local community. She is as determined as ever to help 

local women, particularly from other cultures, to develop skills in 

a safe and secure environment. 

Learning New Skills 

When she began her restaurant she worked with three local 

women, teaching them to cook and prepare food. Her ultimate 

goal, through Give Back 2U UK, is to provide training to 

women. This work will help them learn to speak better English, 

gain skills in food hygiene, First Aid, CV writing, interview skills 

and more. The aim is to give them confidence while respecting

Love your Dog’s Heart 

Valentine's Day has been and gone, but you still... 

love your dog's heart. 

The Veterinary Centre is offering a screening programme. 

Certain breeds and ages of dogs are particularly at risk of 

developing heart disease – especially small breeds like 

Spaniels and large breeds over 25kg in weight. Recent 

research shows that by picking up heart problems in 

affected dogs before clinical symptoms develop (poor 

exercise tolerance, shortness of breath, cough, weight loss) 

the quality and the length of life for these pets will improve. 

Clinical trials have demonstrated a clear benefit with those 

being treated in the early stages. On average they will have 

15 months longer before clinical signs develop and also a 

longer lifespan overall.

playground. The children were having fun, but as 

Jane turned to Sam she realised just how shattered 

her friend was. “You could do with a day off Sam,” she 

said, with that knowing look on her face. “A day to

New Bradwell & Me 

MK City Discovery Centre started its new Bradwell 

Abbey and Me film and oral history project in 

February. Working with Inter-Action MK, Living 

Archive MK and Liisa Clark Art, the project will focus 

on how our communities identify with Milton Keynes 

by recording their experiences of first memories of 

both Bradwell Abbey and Milton Keynes through 

film, interviews, art, sculpture, oral history and nature. 

The project will invite volunteers to help with site 

management, training, supervision and overall event 

and workshop delivery. 

MK City Discovery Centre would love to hear from

at The Old Bath House on Stratford Road 

reduces quality food going to landfill. The 

project diverted 16 tons from the bin to

This initiative aims to help people and

are welcome to give and take food items 

using two fridges and shelves located in the 

foyer of the community centre. The food 

is free but must be weighed and logged 

in and out. Food shared is for personal

300g peeled banana shallots quartered 

2 tbs olive oil 

300g purple sprouting broccoli 

2 rosemary sprigs 

3tbs balsamic vinegar 

320g shortcrust pastry 

60g Feta cheese 

Milk for the pastry 

Salad leaves to serve 

Method 

1. Heat oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6 and put a 

baking sheet inside. 

2. Heat olive oil in frying pan, add broccoli 

and shallots, fry gently. Increase heat and add 

balsamic vinegar, allow to bubble, stirring 

occasionally, until sticky. Tip into a roasting tray 

with rosemary, roast for 20 minutes until veg is 

soft and crisp. 

3. Roll out short crust pastry sheet, place on 

greaseproof paper. Pile cooked veg it into centre, 

leaving a 3cm border. Crumble feta on top. Fold 

excess pastry around the filling to form a rough 

tart. 

4. Brush the pastry edges with milk, slide tart 

onto the hot baking sheet, bake for 20 minutes 

until the pastry is golden and crumbly. Serve with 

salad leaves.

Congratulations to Alex from Growing People at

Highest Accolade 

Congratulations to St Mary and St Giles 

pupils who achieved the Level 5 in the RHS 

Campaign for School Gardening Award – the 

highest award possible. They were assisted by 

volunteers for Stony Stratford in Bloom. Pupils 

harvested the vegetables they had grown, made 

pumpkin soup and served it to pupils, staff and 

parents.

Role Model 

Jessica and Harry were 5 years old when they 

celebrated their last birthday together. A few months 

later Harry died unexpectedly leaving Jessica an only 

child. The family set up Harry's Rainbow to support 

bereaved children.

monthly sessions. In addition, she helps at events and 

makes up memory boxes for children. 

Jessica congratulations on being a role model to all 

young people. 

Success at Rosemary 

Lane School of Ballet 

At the end of November 2018, the young dancers 

of the Rosemary Lane School of Ballet entered their 

Royal Academy of Dance Ballet Exams. After weeks 

of anticipation, the results finally came through in 

January. Students from 6 years of age upwards took 

Graded Examinations from Primary Grade to Grade 8 and 

Vocational Grades to Advanced Foundation. The incredible 

results are a reflection of the dedication of the dancers and 

their committed teachers. The students achieved a 100% 

pass rate with all students gaining a Merit Grade or above. 

Well done to all.

annual showcase at 

Stantonbury Theatre in 

May and the Grade 4 class 

are very excited to be

Sew and Grow is an exciting local social enterprise project which creates 

hand-crafted, artisan products using recycled and naturally-dyed fabrics. 

Developing Skills 

Sew and Grow offers young people a different, more 

practical kind of training. They may have struggled in 

a traditional educational setting; here they can learn 

within a working environment and reconnect with the 

making process. 

Sustainable and Kind to the Environment 

Every product produced is natural and its impact on 

the environment kept to a minimum. 

When we say natural, we mean natural. Plants like 

indigo and woad and food waste such as avocado 

skins, blackberries, turmeric and even red onion skins 

are used to dye fabrics into an incredible array of 

colours. Many of the plants are even grown at the Urb 

Farm while others like coffee, tea and black beans are 

easily accessed from the store cupboard. Each dye is 

kind to the environment, animals and humans – with 

no harmful chemicals. 

To Dye For 

These natural dyes produce some amazing vibrant 

colours. This team has experimented and the 

outcomes reflect the seasons and natural environment 

and are bright enough to be eye-catching. 

Experiments with Hapa Zome, which translates as 

‘leaf bashing’ produced incredible colourful, abstract 

artworks. 

Let it Bee 

Once dyed and sewn, the trainees apply beeswax to 

finish certain products. This gives a tougher more 

resistant, waterproof finish. The beeswax is sourced 

locally from Sew and Grow’s sister enterprise Urban 

Beelievers.

The products make perfect practical gifts, with designs 

for men and women. You can buy tote bags, toilet 

bags and even cushions that become even more 

beautiful with age and use. Some products are also 

lined giving better durability and a chic look.

Be wary of doorstep callers - reputable builders 

will not cold call on you at home, they usually have 

enough work that they don’t need to do this.

Stony Stratford Theatre Society's 2019 

Panto - Robin in StonyLand 

Yet again our little town panto rocked. York House was 

full, both the bar and Stony Sweet Shop's yummy stall 

pretty much sold out. Everyone involved had a fine 

time. The cast were aged 8ish to 80ish, we had original 

music from Neil Mercer, fabulous words from Shelia 

White, the talented cast had the audience rolling with 

laughter, booing like good 'uns and singing along 

with great gusto. 

Huge thanks to all for their support including 

Odell's, Carters Rentals, The Masons in New Street, 

Community Arts Resource Centre and David Pibworth 

of MK Theatre of Comedy who all enabled the magic 

to happen. 

"Amazing show! Had such a good time, wonderful 

songs and Brexit jokes, the choreography in the Merry 

Men song was insane! Well done everyone."

Join the MK Midnight Moo 

Willen Hospice is 

calling on local 

women to sign 

up for this year’s 

MK Midnight Moo 

which takes place on 

13 July. 

In addition to the 

popular 10 mile walk, Willen Hospice has introduced 

a brand new Half-Moo. The new route is just over 

half the distance, 6.3 miles, but promises to be just as 

much fun. 

This iconic event raised more than £120,000 last year 

with walkers starting and finishing at intu Milton 

Keynes. Whatever your walking skill, from beginner to 

experienced you can join the fun. Walk on your own 

and meet fellow walkers or even in pairs or as a team. 

Willen Hospice Chief Executive Peta Wilkinson said: 

“I was thrilled to be part of last year’s MK Midnight 

Moo walking alongside 1000 other women, all 

raising money to support our care. This is our biggest 

fundraising event of the year and we’re so excited to 

be launching it for 2019.” 

The registration fee of only £20 covers the cost of the 

event - the fundraising is key to the Moo’s success. 

This year’s theme is disco and the organisers can’t wait 

to see how walkers will embrace it. There should be 

some interesting disco attire! Once again, Specsavers 

Milton Keynes are supporting the Midnight Moo. 

Willen Hospice needs to raise £4.7 million every year, 

that’s £9 a minute, to continue to provide care to 

patients in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas. The 

MK Midnight Moo is a key event that helps the Hospice

In between the rain, frost and snow, Stony in Bloom volunteers 

have tidied beds and planted new shrubs. They created a new 

flower bed on the Ousebank - Calverton corner, kindly sponsored 

by Jean Barrington in memory of her husband. The new Fullers 

Slade bed was widened to give an even more spectacular 

expanse of colourful flowers and shrubs. 

Mary Robinson and Robin Nichol along with sponsor in kind, 

Dominic Harris, extended the path across the end of the wildlife 

pond at the North end of the High Street. Children can now enjoy 

exploring wildlife.

The Wolverton and Greenleys in Bloom team are 

preparing for the new season, as spring bulbs burst 

through and the colourful winter pansies finish. 

The judges will be impressed with this year’s colourful 

blooms of white, shocking pink, mauve and lilac

Over the last few months news 

reports have highlighted the 

risks of stealing keyless cars. 

Thieves have used technology 

to bypass entry systems on 

these cars for many years, but 

manufacturers continue to 

develop keyless cars. Although

and Nissan models at most risk. 

While the Society of Motor 

Manufacturers and Traders 

believe new cars are more 

secure than ever, cheap 

electronic technology used to 

steal cars can be bought on line. 

The fob just needs to be within 

a certain distance of the car for 

the thief to trick, unlock and start 

the car. It can take less than 60 

seconds and for safety reasons 

the car won’t cut out when the 

key is out of range.
