Summit
recalls
histor y
Stakeholders meet in bid to record legacy
AMANDA NANO
Provincial massacre
committees converged
for an informative
session hosted by the
department of sport,
recreation, arts and culture
(Dsrac) held at the Steve Biko
Centre in Ginsberg, King
William's Town on Tuesday.
The summit aims to educate
communities on the formation of
the non-profit organisations
(NPOs) in order to raise
awareness about their history.
On hand to give invaluable
expertise on running a
foundation was Steve Biko
Foundation board member
Nkosinathi Biko.
“When establishing an NPO,
one needs to base it on the
needs of the particular
massacre. The foundation did its
research before it was establish
to see which type of NPO they
should form,” Biko said.
He added that the NPO
needed to be of relevance to the
communit y.
“It’s not about the benefits
that are going to be derived from
the organisation but about the
cause that should be achieved,
which is representatives of
massacre victims and their
fa m i l i e s ,” said Biko.
The northern areas of Port
Elizabeth, represented by
Christian Martin, have been
plagued by violent deaths over
recent years and there is a need
to be included in the country's
histor y.
“We as the Khoi and San were
neglected in the past when it
comes to massacres and our
history was not heard. There
were about nine massacres in
the province,” Martin said.
Nine local massacres have
been identified in Egerton,
Bhisho, Duncan Village, Northern
Areas, Uitenhage, Ngquza Hill,
Bulhoek, Queenstown and Aliwal
North. “The idea is to empower
them with critical knowledge and
skills to establish and register
non-profit organisations to
enable them to mobilise funds
and material resources from
public and private funding
agencies and donors,” Dsrac
MEC Bulelwa Tunyiswa said.
A helping hand
to those in need
THEMBELA
N D LU M B I N I
Former Zwelitsha
Township resident
Yoliswa Klaas, who now
lives in Mdantsane and
works for the Eastern
Cape department of
education, returned to
her place of birth to help
those in need.
“Times have changed
and the world has
forgotten about the spirit
of ubuntu. It’s time for
people to get closer to
their hearts, put
themselves in the shoes
of the poorest and
wholeheartedly give
them a helping hand,”
said Klaas.
Klaas’s goal was to
help Ambesa Skeyi, 15,
who has suffered from
cerebral palsy since
birth. Skeyi lives with
her grandmother who
sews clothing in order to
feed her family.
“My aim was to get
her a wheelchair. I asked
people around me for
donations and their
response was very
positive.
“However, I felt it
wa s n ’t enough, so I got
her a brand new double
bed and groceries which
cost about R5,000. I
encourage other people
to help needy people.
“Many thanks to my
colleagues and friends
for their support,” Klaas
said.
“It’s very wise to
contribute in the
success of someone
else, knowing that
people go to sleep with
peaceful hearts and full
stomachs. And in
everything – be good
enough to make a
change in someone’s
l i fe . ”
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Yoliswa Klaas gave back to her community by
donating a wheelchair, a bed and groceries to Ambesa Skeyi who
suffers from cerebral palsy
EAST LONDON
W E AT H E R
Unfortunately for locals, this weekend looks set to
be hot and windy with none of the rain from the
last few days.
Thursday sets the tone with a maximum
temperature of 25°C and 18km/h winds from the
northeast. There’s some light cloud, but not much
else.
Things pick up on Friday with the temperature
climbing to 28°C and the wind increases to
22km/h. The cloud cover will increase a bit but
again, no rain is expected to follow.
Saturday will probably be the worst of the
weekend despite the temperature dropping to
26°C. The wind will be blowing full strength today
at 29km/h, this time switching to the southwest.
The temperature takes another drop to 24°C on
Sunday and sees the wind die down a little to
18km/h. There’s also expected to be some light
rain in the morning.
February is the month of love and Go! & Express
Health
day
boost
PHILASANDE SONCASA
Buffalo City Municipality health
department MEC Helen Sauls-
August attended the Mandela-
Castro Thuma’mina Community
Wellness Programme last Saturday
at the Leaches Bay sports field.
Hundreds of community
members attended the day to
access doctors, specialists, nurses,
optometrists and counselling
programmes that are normally not
available to them.
The programme was led by ANC
ward 36 members.
Sauls-August said the
municipality was struggling with
funding at the moment “but that
doesn’t stop us [BCM] from
bringing life to our people”.
“We know very well there is no
clinic here in Leaches Bay. People
have to take transport to
Greenfields Clinic, some are
walking because they can’t afford
taxi fare,” Sauls-August said.
Buffalo City environment
auditors were also present,
checking and testing water and
pollution levels.
Sauls-August told the GO! &
Express that the aim of the
Wellness Programme, which was
launched in April 2018, was to visit
each BCM branch, focusing on
those without hospitals and clinics.
Grandads hit the road again
AMANDA NANO
Eager cyclists will aim to
raise funds for charity as
the Grandads Army
Memorial Ride takes to
the road from East
London to Cape Town on
March 3.
In it's fifth year, the
annual event will see 35
cyclists ride in relay
teams for a distance of
1,160km over five
consecutive days.
Eyabantwana Children's
Trust director Dr Colin
Lazarus said the Grandads
have helped raise R1m
over four years.
“We have a steep
fundraising hill to climb,
but we are confident that
East Londoners and the
many people along the
way who were so
supportive in 2018, will
again rally behind this
great cause,” Lazarus
said.
Frere and Cecilia
Makiwane Hospital's
paediatric patients
benefited from
much-needed surgical
equipment bought from
funds raised in 2018.
These are the main
referral centres for
children in need of
complex surgeries.
The trust was
established by Lazarus,
also a Grandads Army
cyclist, to support work
undertaken by the
hospitals.
Army, navy and air fo r c e
teams each cycle 100km
to Cape Town via the
Cradock, Willowmore,
Swellendam, Gansbaai
and Gordon's Bay route.
They will then tackle
110km on March 10 by
taking on the annual Cape
Town Cycle Tour.
Caltex Eastern Cape
Marketer (CECM), the
official fuel sponsor of the
support teams,
commended the
Eyabantwana Trust for
their dedication in raising
awareness and funds to
assist burn victims in the
Eastern Cape.
“The money raised has
become a beacon of hope
for so many burn victims
in the province. These
youngsters are the future
leaders in our country and
as business we should
ensure that they are given
the chance to make this
happen,” said CECM CEO
Despite some light rain,
the weekend in King is
mostly going to be hot
and windy.
Temperatures start off
mild enough on
Thursday with a
maximum of 23°C. The
heavy cloud cover is a
sign of the rain to come
and is accompanied by
22km/h winds from the
On Friday, the
temperature jumps to
29°C but thankfully, this
is followed by the wind
dropping to 11km/h.
Light rain in the
afternoon should help
cool things off a bit.
Things will stay hot
on Saturday with the
temperature peaking at
return, howling through
from the southwest at
Sunday sees the rain
dry up with some cloud
remaining. The
Our Valentine’s Day winners
WENDY KRETSCHMANN
AS the classic 1970’s disco song by
John Paul Young goes: “Love is in the
air …”
And never more so is this true than at
this time of year – and particularly on
Va l e n t i n e ’s Day.
Today marks the culmination of the
Va l e n t i n e ’s Day competition brought to
our loyal readers by the GO! & Express
in partnership with Umnenga Lodge,
Steers Nahoon, PnA Stationers and
Wakaberr y.
Entrants were encouraged to submit
an advert as well as a motivational
letter and optional photo to stand the
chance of winning fantastic prizes
valued at nearly R1,000.
It’s reassuring to know that despite
much negativity in the world, love still
abounds as can be seen by the
published submissions from some of
our entrants, the adverts from whom
can be viewed in the Classified section
of today’s GO! & Express.
It was a close call between our two
winners and so it was decided to award
prizes to both of them.
In first place was Mervin Pottinger
who will be treating his wife to a meal
at Umnenga Lodge and also receives
prizes from Wakaberry.
21 charities can win R100k
MATTHEW FIELD
As part of their 21-year
anniversary celebrations,
MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet
has launched their “21 Years of
Giving Back” campaign, which
aims to give R2.1m to 21
different beneficiaries.
Supporters have until the end
of February to nominate any
South African charitable
organisation. The 21 winners will
be announced in May and will
each receive R100,000.
“We want to encourage our
supporters to also consider
bringing local, smaller
organisations doing heroic work
in their communities into the
fold and for whom the giveaway
of R100k can make a
considerable difference,”
MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet
general manager Pieter Twine
said.
Since its inception, MySchool
MyVillage MyPlanet has
managed to raise more than
R500m for various schools,
charities, and environmental
causes across the country. In
the last fiscal year alone,
MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet
raised more than R83m.
There are currently 1,200,000
active card-holders involved in
the programme – 890,000
donating to MySchool, 102,000
donating to MyVillage, and
137,000 donating to MyPlanet.
“The amounts raised are a
true testament to what happens
when people collaborate and
the impact that can be achieved
when many people’s
contributions collectively
provide support to causes.
“The funds raised through the
programme can play an
important role in enabling
MyVillage and MyPlanet
organisations to pay their
monthly bills or even provide
them with opportunities to scale
up their services or start new,
much-needed projects,” Tw i n e
Hot, muggy nights
make for bug frights
Ah,
The sweltering heat we’re
enduring at the moment puts me
in mind of the many years I
spent on night-shift at the Daily
Dispatch in their old building in
Caxton Street in the dying years
of the hot-metal newspaper era.
Air conditioning in those days
was a luxury and the muggy
summer months were spent
working amid a bank of Linotype
machines and various other
assorted machinery which fed
off a diet of molten lead
constantly heated to
temperatures of well over 260°C.
As you can imagine, one got
home physically drained in the
early hours of the morning after
putting the paper to bed.
But we were young and strong
in those far-off days and
shrugged the oppressive heat off
as part of the job.
Later, if I may be permitted to
continue in this vein, I was
transferred to The Rep in
Queenstown for the next 21
years. And if I thought the
summer nights in East London
were stifling, the first few
summers in that once beautiful
little town nearly put me in
hospital.
I remember one year keeping
track of the daily temperature
and for 10 consecutive days, the
thermometer hovered around the
40 degree mark. I hesitate to say
it now but our only rickety air
conditioner was in my office and
occasionally I allowed the staff
to cool off in there – if they were
REFLECTIONS
... with Charles Beningfield
good! No doubt many of you
watch BBC News on the box and
when you see places in the
Middle East and Australia
regularly topping 45°C, I
suppose we can’t complain too
much.
Which brings me to the point
of this little piece – the horde of
flying pests that accompany
weather like that.
Lying in bed in the suffocating
heat the other night, a nephew
of mine in East London thought
something had buzzed into his
ear and for the life of him, he
couldn’t remove it.
His doctor could find nothing
and told him to pour a little oil
down the lug-hole. Still no relief.
Back to the doctor who after
extensive examination found a
little hair growing the wrong way
and tickling his ear drum. Would
you believe it!
All of which reminds me of a
story I read recently where the
more cautious folk of Darwin,
Australia are going to bed these
days wearing headphones.
T h at ’s ever since the dreadful
experience of one Hendrik
Helmer who woke in the early
hours with a terrible pain in his
right ear. A cockroach had
crawled in deep and was having
fun down there doing whatever it
is a cockroach does in a
person’s ear in the early hours.
Hendrik tried to suck it out
with the vacuum cleaner. Then
he tried to drown it by pouring in
water. Nothing worked.
The cockroach just burrowed
in deeper. The pain was
becoming excruciating. Then
Hendrik’s flatmate drove him to
hospital. A doctor poured some
oil down the ear canal and that
drove the cockroach frantic. It
was as if an elephant was doing
the gumboot dance on his
eardrum.
Then at last the doctor
managed to catch the critter in a
pair of forceps and carefully
draw it out, still twitching!
People in Darwin now wear
headphones to bed. It’s as well
because the cockroaches there
apparently grow to 9cm in
length. You’d rather go to sleep
listening to rock music than to a
9cm cockroach dancing the
flamenco in your ear hole
wouldn’t you!
Martyred saint became
Va l e n t i n e ’s Day legend
Valentine's Day, a special
time of the year when love
truly is in the air.
February 14 has become a
truly global phenomenon but
have you ever stopped to
wonder why?
Who is this Valentine who
gets a whole day to
themselves and how did it
become such a big deal?
Valentine's Day as we know
it, started out as the Feast of
Saint Valentine, a day in the
Christian calendar celebrating
the titular saint.
As for who Saint Valentine
is, the truth is that no one's
really sure.
The most popular candidate
is Valentine of Rome, a Roman
priest who was martyred in
269AD and added to the list of
saints by Pope Galesius in
496AD.
According to legend, this
Valentine became famous for
ministering to persecuted
Christians in the area.
In addition, he also oversaw
secret marriages for Roman
soldiers since they were
forbidden to marry under
Roman law.
He was eventually captured
and brought before Emperor
Claudius II to be interrogated
and tried to convert the
emperor to Christianity.
Needless to say, Claudius
wa s n ’t all too pleased with
this and ordered Valentine put
to death.
Before he was killed,
Valentine reportedly
performed a miracle by
healing Julia, the blind
daughter of his jailer Asterius.
It is also said that this
Valentine created the first ever
Valentine's card after signing
a letter to Julia with “Fr o m
your Valentine”.
His flower-crowned skull is
now exhibited in the Basilica
of the Santa Maria in
Cosmedin, Rome.
So how did the feast of a
martyred saint become the
universal day of romantic
love?
There are many theories
about this.
Some have linked the
original St Valentine's Day to
the ancient Roman festival
known as Lupercalia
celebrating health and fertility
although the evidence
supporting this is thin.
The first recorded
association of Valentine's Day
with romantic love can be
found in English poet Geoffrey
Chaucer's 1382 poem
Parlement of Foules
[Parliament of Birds]:
"For this was on seynt
Volantynys day
Whan euery bryd comyth
there to chese his make".
["For this was on St.
Valentine's Day,
when every bird cometh
there to choose his mate."]
The poem was in honour of
the first anniversary of the
engagement of King Richard II
of England to Anne of
Bohemia.
The first time Valentine's
Day was described as an
annual celebration of love was
in Charles VI of France's 1400
Charter of the Court of Love
which describes an
extravagant festival hosted by
members of the royal court.
Meanwhile, the oldest
surviving Valentine's poem
dates all the way back to the
1415 and was written by
Charles, Duke of Orléans to
his wife while he was held in
the Tower of London after
being captured during the
Battle of Agincourt in:
Je suis desja d'amour tanné
Ma tres doulce Valentinée . .
..(I am already sick of love,
My very gentle Valentine).
So when you're buying your
lover a box of chocolates and
red roses, remember that you
are partaking in a noble
tradition that stretches back
hundreds of years.

‘He Never Died’ is
dead boring
MATTHEW FIELD
If there’s one way to
describe 2015’s He
Never Died, it’s “wa st e d
p ot e n t i a l ”.
The movie has such
an interesting premise
and decides to do
absolutely nothing with
it, leading to a bland,
forgettable experience.
The main character,
played by Henry Rollins,
is an immortal cannibal
named Jack, who has forced
himself into a strict routine to try
and fight his craving for human
meat. Okay, that’s an interesting
start. The film-makers could do a lot
with that.
Suddenly his estranged daughter,
played by Jordan Todosey, appears
at his door and asks to stay with
him for a few days.
“Jaded and cynical parental
figure reconnecting with child and
rediscovering their humanity” is a
solid foundation for a film but why
did Jack have to be an immortal
cannibal again?
Oh, because his daughter gets
kidnapped in the third act thanks to
plot contrivances and Jack needs to
be able to tear his way through an
entire underground gang (often
literally) without getting injured.
And for an added kick in the
teeth, Jack is revealed to be none
other than Cain, the Bible’s
uncontested Brother of the Year.
I probably should have put a
spoiler warning before this but
honestly the writers didn’t seem to
care so neither will I.
This “t wist” has zero
bearing on the plot and
was completely
unnecessar y.
He Never Died’s
biggest crime, however,
is that it is incredibly
boring.
Jack as a character
falls completely flat and
is such a constant
misery guts that it’s
almost impossible to
feel any sympathy for
him. The other characters, while
actually capable of showing
emotions other than “brooding”, are
pretty one-dimensional.
The action is no better and tries
to compensate for poor camera
work and direction, with
over-the-top gore effects.
We all know Jack can’t be killed,
so there’s no reason to care when
he goes up against a room full of
goons. It sucks out what little
tension there was and what should
be a thrilling battle turns into a dull
chore.
MATTHEW FIELD
Final-year pupils in
Mthatha and Nelson
Mandela Bay are using
technology to help teach
others as part of the
Incubator Schools
Programme Teacher Tutor
Programme.
The initiative is run by
Nelson Mandela
Universit y’s (NMU) Govan
Mbeki Mathematics
Development Centre
(GMMDC) and is sponsored
by the Capitec Foundation.
As such, 250 pupils from
grade 10 to 12 will each
receive a personal 7”
Android tablet which
comes pre-loaded with a
GMMDC-developed app
called TouchTutor®.
The app provides access
to a large number of
learning resources such as
video lessons, PowerPoint
presentations, previous
exam papers, and
multi-lingual support in
eight indigenous
languages.
In addition to the app,
participants will also
benefit from “st u d e n t
tutors” who provide
mid-week tutoring sessions
at their respective schools.
The tutors are all trained
to use TouchTutor® and
will be equipped with their
own piece of technology,
the Gamma Tutor. The
miniature computer is
designed to serve as a
mobile teaching device and
can be plugged directly
into a projector, television,
or digital screen.
“This new programme –
and the new technology –
is a way to empower
teachers to deal with real
challenges, with the
assistance of very modern
mobile teaching tools and
resources, which have been
researched and developed
over the last 10 years,”
GMMDC director Prof
Werner Olivier said.
Student tutor Frans Louw
said: “I think the pupils will
appreciate it a lot, having
someone sit next to them,
helping them to see where
they’re stuck.
“It will also help us to
grow as teachers,
especially learning how to
incorporate technology with
teaching.”
Find strength, balance for
body and soul at Curves
At Curves, “st rong” is about so
much more than building muscle.
The Curves programme is
specially designed for women to
provide them with what they need
to feel great and build a healthier
future – strong bodies, strong
balance and a strong community.
Women can get a full-body
workout in just 30 minutes and
burn up to 500 calories per
w o r ko u t .
Curves programmes include a
healthy meal plan, a variety of
specialised classes and
supportive coaches to assist
women on their journey to see
results.
Curves strength training, using
hydraulic resistance, builds lean
muscle, giving women a toned
and firm appearance.
Strength training provides
many benefits for both physical
and mental health, including
reduced risks of cardiovascular
disease, hypertension, diabetes,
cancer and obesity.
Regular strength training and
cardiovascular exercise can serve
as a distraction to worries,
allowing women to break out of
the cycle of negative thoughts
that feed anxiety and depression.
Curves gives women the
options to work with individual
body type, skill level and physical
abilit y.
At Curves, they know the value
of a coach and they are part of
the membership from day one.
During a coaching session,
they will discuss everything from
achievable goals, anticipated
results and necessary changes
for optimum results.
The coach will also motivate
members to uphold their workout
habit to see those noticeable
results. With the measurements
that are taken during this
coaching session, members will
see proof of their bodies
changing – from centimetres,
kilograms and body fat.
The Curves community is full of
strong women. Whether you bring
a friend with you or make new
ones, the coaches and members
of Curves will support you both
on and off the circuit.
Call today to make a
no-obligation consultation with
the Curves team, and try out their
free seven-day trial workouts.
CrossFit exercise gets
your body into shape
Since Greg Glassman opened the first
CrossFit affiliate (called a CrossFit
box) in 2001 in Santa Cruz, CrossFit
has exploded globally.
Currently there are more than 15,000
boxes in 162 countries.
CrossFit East London was
established in 2011 and is the only
CrossFit affiliate in the city.
They are based in the Hub in
Beacon Bay and offer one-hour long
group classes focusing on intensity of
workouts and functional movements –
safe, effective and efficient
movements.
Workouts are constantly varied and
tailored to each individual by the
coaches.
Anyone who has never tried CrossFit
before is able to register for three free
classes – with no obligation.
They are also running a special offer
that any signups in February and
March will pay no joining fee if they
present this advert.
WHAT IS CROSSFIT?
CrossFit is a lifestyle characterised
by effective exercise and sound
nut rition.
CrossFit can be used to accomplish
any goal, from improved health to
weight loss to better performance.
The programme works for everyone
and workouts are modified for each
athlete to help him or her become
fitter and healthier.
Grandparents, Olympians and
everyone in-between, can perform
modified versions of the same
w o r ko u t .
The programme produces
observable results that can be
measured and replicated.
DO I NEED TO BE IN SHAPE TO
START CROSSFIT?
No. CrossFit is the fitness and
nutrition programme that will get you
in shape no matter what your current
fitness level is.
You can start CrossFit if you’ve
never worked out, if you have injuries,
or if you're sick or overweight.
CrossFit workouts are modified to
help each person succeed, improve
fitness and take daily steps toward
goals.
As you become fitter, your workouts
will be adjusted to challenge you at
your new level.
IS CROSSFIT SAFE?
Yes. CrossFit training is safe.
In CrossFit boxes, credentialed
trainers provide precise instructions
and coaching to help people move
safely and efficiently, helping them
avoid the diseases and injuries that
come from inactivity, obesity and poor
nut rition.
For many, this will be their first
and for some, it will be their fifth
consecutive run.
The motivation for each
individual differs. It’s an escape
from reality, a chance to get out
of one’s comfort zone, a physical
and mental challenge, a
family-bonding experience, a
group effort in remembrance of
someone special or simply
something different.
The event takes place ever y
February and has the support of
many local businesses, including
Aldersons Ambulance, RB Africa,
Outhere Trails, Luxliner, Steers,
Twizza and the Kempston Group
an exciting match on Saturday
the Tigers was not an easy one.
“We knew it wasn’t going to
be an easy game in the first half.
We lack a lot of structure and
that caused careless mistakes. In
the second half, we started to
pick up and played a more
structured game, which I believe
led us to victory,” he said.
Ntsebeza said they are hoping
in their next game to build more
confidence and play a faster and
wider game.
East London Hockey Academy, formerly known as
Mini Hockey, has been the starting point for
many young hockey players over the years.
Coaching co-ordinator Hayden Kraemer said
they run weekly training sessions for boy and girl
players aged five to 14 on a Saturday morning at
Buco Astro Park in Bunkers Hill.
“We believe all players should have the
opportunity to grow their skills and love for the
game.
“The academy went through a re-branding in
2016 to the now East London Hockey Academy.
Before, we ran under the East London Mini
Hockey banner that has been around for 30
years.
“We have a team of dedicated coaches who
run the training sessions on a Saturday from
7.30am to 8.45am. Our coaches are graded in
both South African Hockey Association (Saha)
coaching and umpiring levels.
“Many coaches are also involved in local
school structures and coach at club level,”
Kraemer said.
He said some coaches have even gone on to
coach and umpire at provincial level.
“In 2018, we started an exciting venture
extending our training groups to a weeknight to
allow for higher age groups. We started our
Performance Academy that now runs on
Wednesdays from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.”
“At the end of each season, we put players
through an overall skills assessment, and then
award the players levels with regard to their skill
levels.
“We are planning on growing and helping
other schools in growing their knowledge and
skills around the game of hockey,” he said.
