Award ceremony of the Prof. Dr. Marijan Hanžeković Trust for 2018 was
held on December 6, 2018 at the Palace Hotel. The winner of this year's
award is Assist. Prof. Vladimir Arčabić, PhD, from the Department of Macroeconomics
and Economic Development of the Faculty of Economics
&Business, and was awarded in the category of regular papers for scientific
work Fiscal convergence and sustainability in the European Union.
On that occasion, Assist. Prof. Arčabić, PhD expressed gratitude to all the
professors and colleagues who helped him to shape the work and gave
comments and advices for its improvement. He remarked that he enjoyed
doing the work, no matter how weird it sounded, and that he was satisfied
with the results at every stage of its emergence.
The award, which was presented for the 19th year in a row, was presented
to Assist. Prof. Vladimir Arčabić by the administrator of the trust Ms. Katarina
Ott, PhD, who is also the director of the Institute of Public Finance.
The author analyzes the convergence of fiscal policy and tests the fiscal
sustainability of the European Union and member states using data on
their revenues, expenditures and debt. It considers the absolute convergence
of the convergent member states, which is important because the EU
has no unified fiscal policy, and the policies of member states are heterogeneous
and lead to different fiscal converging groups.
This year, on the occasion of St. Nicholas' Day, the Faculty of Economics &
Business organized a play for the children of their employees at the theater
Trešnja. Along with the party with candies, the forthcoming Christmas holidays
were introduced to the children by the play Nutcracker.
The Nutcracker and the Mouse King is an artistic fairy tale written by the
great German romantic writer Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann in 1816.
It served as an inspiration for one of the most famous and to the children
most popular ballet, which do not descend from the stages in the World
during the Christmas season, and served as well for numerous literary and
film adaptations.
genius inventor, their beloved godfather Drosselmeier.
He bring them for Christmas present, he had made, a man-like machine for
the cracking of nuts, seemingly inanimate Nutcracker. However, this creature
is linked to an exciting story, which also in the twenty-first century
has a lot to say: about Friendship, Love, Forgiveness, Freedom of Impression,
Ugliness of Vengeance, Magnificent Human Mind and Imagination for
which there are no obstacles or boundaries.
The play, in the version of Ms. Lada Kaštelan and directed by Ms. Paola
Tišljarić, the play in a new and unusual way approach to the original Hoffmann
plot, in which a very smart and curious girl Marie and her brother
Fritz meet unexpected, fantastic characters and worlds with the help of a
Holidays are the time of the gifts, and also the students of the Faculty of Economics & Business have
shown their great heart in this pre-Christmas time. In order to enhance X-mas holidays to those in needs,
the Student Associations of the Faculty of Economics & Business - Student Choir, HSA, Economic Clinic,
Finance Club, eSTUDENT, Debate Club, Tourism Lab and Ekonomio in co-operation with the Red Cross
from December 10 to 20, 2018 have conducted humanitarian action under the name STUDENT SANTA
CLAUS.
"The goal of this humanitarian action was to gather as many nutrition and hygiene supplies for the Red
Cross Social Self-service Store. In this way we wanted to make our contribution and jointly make the holidays
easier for those in need, and I was especially pleased to have all the students and staff of the Faculty
of Economics involved in the action" said Marijan Buljan, President of the Student Choir.
In the organizational sense, the scientific-teaching part of the Faculty of Economics is divided into the department. Throughout history, the number of departments
(sometimes referred to as the chair, literally translated from the Latin language) changed according to the development of economic science and teaching needs, and some of
the departments were extinguished (e.g., the Department for Diplomatic History), other “merged” (e.g. the Department of Public Law and the Department of Economic Law),
the third only changed its name (Department of National Economy) or split in two (e.g., the Department for Quantitative Methods), and with the development of science in
general, emerged some completely new (e.g., Department of Informatics). Today, we have 17 departments, while, for example, just before WWII (while the School of Economics
and Commerce was an independent higher education institution outside of the University of Zagreb system) were even 19! According to the Directive of the Ministerial Council
(or more precisely the Minister of Education) of June 17, 1939 the Chapter 3 ... Art. 73:
"There are departments at EKVŠ (School of Economics and Commerce) in Zagreb, which cover entire scientific branches. One department may include more related scientific subjects.
At EKVŠ in Zagreb, there are these departments with their subjects:
1) Department for Political (National) Economics
2) Department for Economic Policy
3) Department of Social Science and Social Policy
4) Department for Economic History
5) Department for Economic Geography
6) Department for Cooperatives
7) Department of Insurance Science
8) Department of Financial Science
9) Department of Utilities and Communal Policy
10) Statistics Department
11) Department of Private Economy
12) Department of Techniques of Business Economics (Accounting, Commercial Technique)
13) Department of Techniques of International Trade
14) Department of Technology - Merchandising
15) Department of Technology - Material and Quality Control
16) Department for Private (National and International) Law
17) Chair for Public (National and International) Law
18) Department of Economic Law
19) Department for Diplomatic History
In addition to the aforementioned departments, a new departments may be established by the Royal Decree at the proposal of the Minister of Education and on the basis of the reasoned
proposal of the Senate (Article 19, paragraph 9)" of the School of Economics and Commerce in Zagreb.
In 2010, Chile became the first Latin American member of the OECD, an
international body that brings together the most developed states of the
world. Chilean membership in this selected state society is the result of
decades of continuous economic and social growth, enabling Chile to position
itself as the most developed country in South America. His recognition
is the historical success, as it has been accepted as a South American country
in the OECD.
Bearing in mind the interest of Croatia in joining this organization, to have
the knowledge of Chilean experience could be of great importance for Croatia.
The Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Zagreb
and the Embassy of the Republic of Chile in the Republic of Croatia in cooperation
with the Faculty of Economics of the University of Rijeka and the
Institute for Public Finance, organized on December 5, 2018 a round table
titled Chile as OECD Member: Sharing Valuable Experience with Croatia on
Path to Membership. On behalf of the organizers the convention was addressed
by Prof. Jurica Pavičić, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and
Business, and H. E. Juan Luis Nilo Valledor, Ambassador of the Republic of
Chile to the Republic of Croatia.
As part of a round table, moderated by Assist. Prof. Velibor Mačkić, PhD,
Chile's representatives talked about their experiences during the negotiations
for entry into the OECD. Thus Ambassador Felipe Morandé Lavín,
Permanent Representative of Chile to the OECD, noted that OECD membership
influenced the policy formulation and implementation of Chilean
public policies, while Mr. Rodrigo Monardes Vignolo, Councelor of the
Chile's permanent delegation to the OECD , focused on the technical aspects
of the Chilean accession process to the OECD.
Prof. Catherine Ott, PhD, Director of the Public Finance Institute stressed
the importance of budget transparency, openness and civic participation,
and the role of the OECD as a promoter of best practices of budgetary
transparency. The experiences of the Baltic countries and Slovenia in the
framework of the accession treaties, and the expectations that Croatia has
in this respect has been analyzed by Assist. Prof. Vinko Zaninović, PhD,
from the Faculty of Economics in Rijeka.
The 3rd International Conference on the European Commercial Law and Corporate
Governance was held on December, 6 and 7 2018 at the Faculty of
Economics & Business of the University of Zagreb.
The conference opened with welcome speeches by Prof. Sanja Sever Mališ,
PhD, Vice-Dean for Strategic Partnerships and Projects, Mr. John Gašparac,
President of the PWC Management Board and Prof. Hana Horak, PhD, President
of the Program Board.
The conference brought together leading European experts in the area of
corporate law and corporate governance, as well as young scientists, students
and practitioners who face daily issues of corporate law and corporate
governance.
The aim was to discuss current issues in the areas such as the implementation
of digital solutions, cross-border transactions, rights and obligations
of shareholders, specific rules for financial institutions, public-legal interventions
in the management of companies, etc. Through the above mentioned
themes the conference gave participants insight into new trends in
the development of European corporate law and corporate governance and
the application of acquired experience and knowledge in further scientific
and practical work.
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the death of academician Ivo
Perišin, on December 5, 2018, was held a scientific conference World Financial
Vortex - 30 years after. The conference was organized by the Croatian
Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) and the Faculty of Economics &
Business of the University of Zagreb, bringing together a large number of
distinguished finance economists. On behalf of the HAZU, the meeting was
welcomed by the President, Academician Zvonko Kusić, and on behalf of
the Faculty of Economics & Business Vive-Dean Prof. Lorena Škuflić, PhD,
who emphasized Ivo Perišin's contribution to both institutions and expressed
the wish for more frequent and better cooperation between scientific
institutions.
4
14 papers on current issues of monetary policy, international finance, public
finances and financial markets were presented at the conference. In almost
every work, attitudes, observations and predictions have been updated,
which Academician Perišin articulated in his works. Professor Ivo
Perišin in his book The World Financial Vortex in 1988 was the first in Croatia
to warn of ever stronger financialization of the economy and its devastating
consequences if the regulation and supervision of financial institutions
were neglected. Unfortunately, this has just happened because the
process of liberalization and globalization has paved the way for an uncontrolled
expansion of financial markets, especially new financial derivatives.
The best papers from this conference will be published in special Proceedings
and will certainly attract attention both to the professional and to the
general public. In this way, the Faculty of Economics & Business has shown
that it does not forget its prominent professors and scientists who have
contributed to the education of students, scientific research and public
work.
Organized by the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies on the Faculty
global and European through the past, present and future perspective.
As part of the conference, more than 180 participants held 150 presentations
deployed in 22 panels, out of which one was intended for South
