Bella Given of Longlands

Each issue we put a North Devon business personality in the hot seat and ask them 10 questions. This issue we asked Bella Given, owner of

award-winning luxury glamping accommodation at Longlands, near Combe Martin

1. What was your first job?

My first job was with James

Burrough, owners of Beefeater

Gin. I helped with

the development of a new

drink from concept, flavour,

packaging all the way to

promoting it in the clubs of

Nottingham, complete with

a Brazilian Samba band and

dancers! Gin tasting at 10am

was less enjoyable.

2. What is the best

business advice you’ve

ever received?

Monitor cash flow! It can

be the death of many a small

business, particularly one

with seasonality. Build a

spreadsheet, forecast monthly

income and keep a close track

on monthly expenditure.

3. What do you enjoy most

about business?

People. Meeting, greeting,

networking, supporting. I am

a total affirmation addict so

the wonderful feedback we

get from guests is like oxygen

to me!

4. What technology could

your business never be

The internet. Most of my

bookings are made online

and Facebook is my number

one source of bookings.

5. Describe your

management / business

Consultative. I want

everyone who works at Longlands

to love what they do

and where they work. Guests

can sense that this is a happy

place and that all who work

here take real pride in what

they do and what they have

helped create.

6. How do you go about

personal development?

Reading and courses. There

is always something new

to learn. And the world is

ever changing particularly in

terms of technology.

7. Is there anything about

yourself that you want to

Less prone to worry. I worry

about what people think, if

they are warm enough, cool

enough, having fun, having

too much fun, can they work

the wood burner,

This year I am practicing

Mindfulness to help me stay

calm and keep things in

8. Social media: yes or no?

Preferred network?

Absolutely! Facebook is my

number one source of bookings.

I am reserving judgement

on Instagram while I

work out how to best leverage

it. Pinterest is next on my list

to play with. I confess that I

am not a fan of Twitter!

9. How do you wind down

when not working?

Gardening! Although it is not

entirely a break from work as

we sell what we grow. I also

love walks on the beach and

in woods and in the Summer

it is hard to drag me out of

the sea and away from my

wooden body board!

10. Do you have a motto or

favourite quotation?

Some people WANT it to

happen, some people WISH it

would happen, others MAKE

it happen.
