HUNTER ODOM, JR. dmegill@mcleaninsurance.com IT’S IMPORTANT TO MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD AT THE STATE AND NATIONAL LEGISLATIVE LEVEL On January 30, we had a wonderful Insurance Agents Day on the Hill in Richmond. We visited with our local legislators on insurance-related topics and informed them of our views; they were all very welcoming. It was nice to see the Young Agents steal the show, well represented and heavily involved in all parts of the day. We talked with legislators about SB1006 which would allow the sale of health insurance across state lines and of course, SB1222 and SB1747, related to agent licensing and CE compliance. It was great to see our presence making a difference and I encourage you to attend Insurance Agents Day on the Hill in Richmond in 2020. Last March was the Big I National Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. This is when agents from all across the country go to Washington to meet their Congressional representatives to talk about insurance-related issues and to educate them on the issues of importance to the insurance industry. We talked about the importance of the Flood Insurance Program reauthorization, crop insurance and opposing changes to the Farm Bill, tax reform and helping our Sub-S agencies, cybersecurity and setting standards for all the carriers to follow, health care and the repeal of the “Cadillac tax,” and Insurance Regulatory Reform. Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia were well represented by Bob Bradshaw, Carter Lyons, and numerous agents and Young Agents. I must say that I was very impressed by the Big I Staff and how well they prepared us for our meetings with our legislators. I strongly recommend attending this event May 8-10 for I was very surprised at how easy it was to participate. Carter Lyons and Jill Roth did a great job organizing the meetings and educating us on what to expect. I used to take this sort of thing for granted but if we aren’t participating for our own industry, who will? It is important for not only our industry but for our agencies that we be informed and involved in the political realm. IIAV dedicates countless hours on our behalf each year but I encourage you to make sure your voice is heard on both a national and the state level. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR NOT ONLY OUR INDUSTRY BUT FOR OUR AGENCIES THAT WE BE INFORMED AND INVOLVED IN THE POLITICAL REALM. DO YOU FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
