2019 Winter Centerville Elks Athletic Program

Winter for Centerville

Winter Athletic Program

We would like to welcome all of you to the Centerville City School District where athletics serves as yet

another tool to prepare our students to excel in life when their high school experience ends. We pride

ourselves in partnering with our athletes to help them always compete with a sense of humility, embrace

and respond to adversity in an appropriate manner and continuously strive to reach excellence. We are

so appreciative of the tremendous support we receive from the Centerville Community and I want to

personally thank all of you for your continued and unwavering support.

We are proud members of the Greater Western Ohio Conference and this past school year won the

GWOC Eastern Division All-Sports trophy for the 17th consecutive year. The conference will see some

changes at the conclusion of this year but the Elks remain committed to the GWOC and will continue to be

a proud member moving forward.

We would like to remind all of those who attend our games that we all share a role in the development of

our student-athletes competing and we ask you choose to behave in a manner which reflects the positive

values we are expecting from our own student-athletes.

You can follow Centerville Athletics on twitter @chselksad. We are very proud of the excellent athletic

programs we have here in Centerville, but we are most proud of how our coaches and student-athletes

represent our school and our

Greetings from the

GWOC Commissioner

Hello and welcome to the 2018-19 season! The GWOC and their student-athletes are excited

to have you in attendance. Athletes, coaches, and administrators of the GWOC have worked

hard in preparation for this year’s events.

The Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) has built a distinguished history of academic

and athletic excellence over the years. The communities that makeup the GWOC have

proud histories and their ongoing support has helped establish a conference that is among

the best in the state. There is nothing like the experience of being a student-athlete, or fan, of

the Greater Western Ohio Conference. It offers students the best opportunities to compete in

an elite academic and athletic conference. It also provided a forum for fans of the GWOC to

support the best high schools, and competition, in the state.

The conference sponsors and provides recognition for athletics at the middle school and high

school levels. GWOC sponsored athletics continue to have team and individual recognition at

the local, district, regional, state, and national levels.

The conference continually promotes and encourages the concept of sportsmanship to the

fullest degree in athletic competition. Proper conduct and respect for all are actions to be

demonstrated before, during, and after all sporting events and activities. We ask that you do

your part by being a role model and positively support the game’s participants. Sportsmanship

is everyone’s responsibility.

Centerville Athletic Boosters

Dear Elk Families,

More than half of the high school and middle school student population in Centerville City Schools

participate in one or more of the sports programs offered by the district; a strong indication our

community values and supports the continuation of a strong sports program within Centerville City

Schools. The value to the student population from participating in the sports programs offered by

the district ranges from being a part of a team, being physically fit and improving skills in a game,

becoming a leader in an athletic program to earning a college scholarship as a result of the higher

level of training and competition that our district enjoys.

The Centerville Schools Athletic Booster Club is a charitable organization whose mission and purpose

is to support the athletic programs offered by our district. With the ever-changing funding landscape

for school districts all over the country, it is now more important than ever for booster groups such

as ours to work even harder to continue providing these opportunities for our students. For over 30

years, the Athletic Booster Club has worked to enhance the District’s athletic programs by providing

supplemental funding and making substantial contributions to the capital improvements in all our

sport facilities. We have contributed to the improvements in the weight room, the tennis courts, both

gymnasiums, the soccer/lacrosse field, the baseball field, and the football field. The Centerville

community needs to continue its efforts now to help sustain these popular athletic programs.

Please consider joining the Centerville Schools Athletic Booster Club if you have not already done

so. It is easy to join and there are a number of levels in which to participate. Visit the Booster

Website at www.elkboosters.com for membership information. Any support you can provide is greatly

Boys Varsity Basketball

Thank you for your support of Centerville Schools and the Boys Basketball program. We are happy

to see you and hope you enjoy the season!

Our guys have worked very hard this off-season to put themselves in a position for another exciting

year of Centerville Basketball. Our schedule will be tough again with non-conference games

against successful teams from last year that are returning some of their top players - like Moeller,

Northland, Trotwood, and Trinity, KY. This year, as in most, our league schedule will be as difficult

as any in the state. Springfield and Wayne look to again be the top two teams in the conference,

but could be challenged by a very talented Fairmont team. Beavercreek will also be in the mix,

returning several players seeing significant playing time last season. Our guys are looking forward

to the opportunity to compete at a high level against the best players that our schedule has to offer.

The graduation of 5 seniors, who played in 3 straight District Championships games, leaves a big

hole to fill. The graduating seniors will be missed both on the court and in the locker room. Seniors

returning this year are Ryan Marchal (3rd year), Matt Pearce, Ryan Ballard, Davis Mumaw, Jason

Sneed, Kaleb Mitchell, Tim Ankenbauer, and Kebba Archimalo. Junior Mo Njie also returns to the

varsity team this season. Other underclassmen that have a chance to contribute to the varsity team

this year are Drew Thompson (Jr) and Andre Zimmerman (Jr). Several sophomores and freshmen

could also be in the mix as the season progresses. Establishing consistent expectations and

holding teammates accountable will be an important part of this group’s season. If our leadership

approaches the season with a sense of urgency and can develop the trust we need to challenge

each other daily in practice, we have a chance to be competitive with everyone on our schedule.

Tough & Together!

Girls Varsity Basketball

Welcome to the 2018-2019 Lady Elks Basketball Season. This season presents many challenges. Each

opponent we face has quality players and coaches, which will provide excellent competition every game night.

We welcome you to all our games as we hope to provide excitement in each game. We pride ourselves in playing

hard on the floor and look to make it an exciting season.

Our schedule is year in and year out is one of the most difficult in the entire state. We play each team in our

division of the GWOC two times this season along with four crossover games against other GWOC opponents.

We will also play state powers in Berlin Hiland, Bellbrook, Mount Notre Dame, and Tecumseh. We also travel to

Northern Indiana to play in Hoops for Pink Holiday Tournament. Each game will provide a test and coming ready

to play is essential for success this season.

The Lady Elks return seven letter winners from last season: Sam Chable, Kelsey George, Alexis Hutchison,

Emma Stanley, Grace Stoller, Kenzie Smith and Amy Velasco. The team continues to work hard to integrate the

players new to varsity this year with the experience of returning players. This team should provide excitement to

the Elk Fans.

We wish all of the Centerville Teams good luck this winter and we hope to see you at a game this season.

Varsity Hockey

Centerville Hockey Welcomes New Head Coach and New Assistant Coach

Coach Aaron Quick is a Captain in the United States Airforce and comes to us from Montana where he was head

coach for Varsity High School Hockey at Great Falls Americans in Great Falls Montana from 2014-2017. In his

younger years he played AAA hockey in HS for the Colorado Thunderbirds. Post high school he played in Junior A

in the NAHL for the Wichita Falls Wildcats and Bismarck Bobcats where he helped to win a national championship

and earn a scholarship to play for hockey for the Air Force Academy. While at the Academy he helped to win two

conference championships.

Coach Quick’s message to the team:

It’s my first-year coaching here at Centerville High School and I am looking forward to watching the boys on the

team become better individuals as well as a tight-knit family. As a coach I know that the journey of maturity is

gained from lessons that are taught in the hard times and I am looking forward to watching the boys mature as the

season goes on. I am looking forward to a winning season for Centerville Hockey! GO ELKS!!

Assistant Coach Tommy Seebacher is excited to be back on the ice at his alma mater. He graduated from CHS in

2014. He is happy to join the family in the world of Centerville Hockey to help the Elks in this season of transition.

He is coming to us fresh from his accomplishment of graduating from Miami University with a major in Biology,

Pre-Medical Studies and a minor in Management and Leadership.

Both Coaches are excited for the season ahead of us. If you want to follow us more closely as a team, check out our

webpage at ElksHockey.com. Tweet us @Elks_Hockey. Follow us at Centerville Elks Varsity Hockey on Facebook

or even better, come join us at South Metro Sports and cheer!

Elk Hockey History

A Rich Tradition of Success

The Centerville High School Varsity Hockey Team has a rich history of

success. Founded and recognized in 1973 as an OHSAA sanctioned

varsity sport, CHS Hockey quickly established its name in Ohio by winning

a State Title in 1979 under Coach Keith Harring. In the years that followed,

Centerville continued its standard of excellence.

The Tim Evans Years

In 1988, Tim Evans took over the program and in his 16-year tenure

established one of the most respected and dominate varsity teams in

Ohio. Under Coach Evans, the Elks won 10 League Titles, 9 trips to the

Elite Eight of State, and 2 Final Four appearances.

The Andy Sloan Years

In 2003, the closing of South Metro (then called “The Stick”) for one year

caused the team to move afternoon practices to Hara Arena. This change

in time and location caused Coach Evans to choose to retire. Former Elk

player Andy Sloan took over as head coach. Under Coach Sloan the Elks

remained competitive in the SWOHSHL

Adam Frank Years

In 2007, Adam Frank, a former player under Coach Tim Evans, was

named Head Coach. In Coach Frank’s second season, the 2009

Centerville Elks went to the State Final Four for the first time in 12 years

and only the 4th time in the program’s long history. Under Coach Frank,

the Elks won 1 League Title, 2 Division Titles, 2 trips to the Elite Eight of

State, and 1 Final Four appearance.

Simon Excoffon Years

In 2013, Simon Excoffon was named Head Coach of the Elks Hockey

team. Excoffon led the team to a record of 36-19-4 during his time as

Special Awards 2017-2018

Elks Leadership Award – Corwin Marek

This award was started by Chip Worrell. It is given by the coaching staff to the

Varsity hockey player who best exemplifies a love of the game and a “never quit”

attitude…someone who understands that the success of the team outweighs all

personal honors.

Most Valuable Player Award – Griffin Bechtolt

Voted by the team, is presented to the player deemed most critical to the team’s

Defensive Leader Award – Griffin Bechtolt

The purpose of this award is to honor the Varsity hockey player who has led the

team to success through his/her outstanding defense. Since defensemen often

do not receive as many points as do forwards, and are often forgotten about in

awards ceremonies as a result, this award seeks to recognize and honor the fact

that solid defense is as important to winning, if not more important, as scoring

Offensive Leader Award– Drew Schemmel

The purpose of this award is to honor the Varsity hockey player who has led the

team to success through his/her outstanding offensive plays. While defense is

key to the game and the success of the team, we know, it’s the goals that give the

winning record.

Scholar-Athlete Award – Dominik Del Ghingaro

Selected by the coaching staff, is present to the upperclassman who has excelled

coach. During his second and final season as coach, Excoffon’s team

set a team record for shorthanded goals and tied the record for shutouts

in a season, a record that had gone unmatched for 18 years. Centerville

finished the 2014-15 season ranked 9th in the District and 27th in State

but made an early exit in the District tournament losing to top-seeded

Dublin Jerome in the second round.

The Chabut Years

The Elks, coached by Craig Chabut, competed in the Southwest Ohio

High School Hockey League (SWOHSHL), which included teams from

Dayton, Cincinnati, and the surrounding areas. In the State Tournament

the Elks competed against SWOHSHL and Columbus teams to earn a

birth in the Final Four.

The Year of Mathis

As Craig Chabut retired to raise his two new beautiful daughters,

Centerville welcomes Scott Mathis as our head coach. Prior to

assuming his current position, Scott served as an assistant coach for

the Beavercreek High School varsity hockey team (2016-2017). Having

a rich and in-depth experience in hockey from his own youth to beyond

the collegiate level, Scott hopes to bring the program to a new level of

intensity, excellence, and excitement.

Coach Scott had a permanent change of station in his Air Force career

and we said goodbye to one Academy grad and hello to another. Coach

Aaron Quick comes to us from Montana where he coached Varsity High

School Hockey at Great Falls Americans from 2014-2017. Coach Scott

is excited to watch the Centerville boys mature, grow, and develop into a

strong team of both excellence on the ice and in character.

in both the classroom and on the ice.

Most Improved – Josh Jones

Voted by the team, is present to the play who made the most improvement over

the course of the season or from one season to the next.

Terry Wielend Sportsmanship Award/Hobey Baker Character Award –

Griffin Bechtolt

At the conclusion of each year’s hockey season, the Centerville Hockey

Association has presented the Terry Wieland Sportsmanship Award in the

memory of Terry. Terry Wieland was a student at Centerville High School from

1978-1980. He was an excellent student and a goalie for the CHS hockey

program. In July 1980, Terry was struck by lightning. In his memory, from 1983-

2007, the Terry Wieland Sportsmanship award has been given to the Senior

Varsity hockey player who has best represented the outstanding qualities that

were exemplified by Terry.

Beginning in 2008, the memory of Terry’s character and sportsmanship are

reflected in the State’s Hobey Baker High School Character Award. In memory

of All-American hockey and football athlete and WWII hero, Hobey Baker, the

Ohio High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with the coaching staff of

each Varsity team, selects one Senior “best kid” from each Varsity hockey team

in the state. The criteria for this award are character, sportsmanship, citizenship,

teamwork, and academics. The attitude that reflects the recipient of this award is

“team before me.”

Swim & Dive Team Returning Lettermen

The 2017-2018 season was again a solid one for the Swimming and Diving team as

the Elks repeated as overall GWOC champions on both the girls and boys side. At

the GWOC meet Nicola Lane, Lauren Lampe, Pruitt Walther, and Liz Quarin broke

the conference record in the 200 Medley Relay along with Austin Flaute setting a

new GWOC Diving record. At the OHSAA State meet, the Elks took to the podium

3 times with Nicola Lane placing 5th in 500 free and 8th in 100 back while Austin

Flaute finished 5th in diving. CHS school records also fell last season with Lauren

Lampe setting a new record in 100 breast and Austin Flaute setting a new 6 dive

The 2018-2019 season looks to be a great one with one of the largest teams ever at

Centerville. The team lost a strong senior class last year but this year’s senior group

has already provided tremendous leadership to keep the team strong and spirited.

There are 9 out of 11 state qualifiers returning to the team this year along with a

large group of hard working and talented freshmen poised to help ll in the ranks.

Likewise, the diving team has grown in numbers with one of the largest teams in

many years.

The sports medicine program at Centerville High School allows our students to gain valuable

hands-on experience with our athletes. Students in this program volunteer in the athletic training

room under the guidance of our full-time trainers. They take care of the basic needs of practice,

game, and competition preparations for the athletes. Each student is assigned to one sport and

follows that team to home and away games.

Good Luck this Season!

Our mission is to enhance the high school education experience for gymnasts at Centerville. Our

team philosophy is to foster self-confidence, self-discipline, self-awareness, friendship, loyalty and

school spirit. We like to have fun, but we also like to succeed. We are extremely proud of our

accomplishments for Centerville High School. We have represented Centerville numerous times

as a team at State and have had gymnasts compete individually almost every year. We strive to

be the best, while enjoying every minute.

Gymnastics Program History

The Centerville High School gymnastics team has a strong history, starting with a State

Championship win in 1977. In our 40-year history, the gymnastics team has advanced to the

prestigious State competition a total of 22 times. We have been named the Southwest District

Champions 10 times, most recently in 2014, while being the runner-up 12 times. We aim to

continue that tradition of excellence in the upcoming 2018-19 season. Our team goal is to qualify

to the State competition.
