HEARTHSTONE YARD OF THE MONTH
Happy 2019, neighbors! New year-blank palette. 7114 Willow Bridge Circle, the home of Cherrie and
Steve Brickhouse, is a “watercolor,” whose numerous beds exude brushstrokes of every hue, shade, tint,
tone, tinge, cast and tincture known to mankind. If you are under the impression that color is difficult
Cy-Fair Home and Garden Show in February, a trip to
Brenham in March to attend a flower show, shop and
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR HARRIS COUNTY CONSTABLE
The Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 5 is now offering a class on
Rape Aggression Defense (RAD). RAD is one of the best women’s self-defense
courses available. It’s a program based on realistic self-defense tactics
and techniques. It is a comprehensive self-defense course for women
that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance,
while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defensive training. If you’re
interested in more information and signing up, go to this link:
https://constablepct5.com/index.php/rad
Make sure if you or your family goes on vacation to put in a “Vacation Watch”
by our patrol deputies. You can fill out a vacation watch form online here:
HEARTHSTONE STREETLIGHTS
The Hearthstone HOA coordinates maintenance of all the streetlights
throughout the community. This includes the “cobra head” lights like
you see along many streets and highways, as well as the decorative light
poles along Huffmeister and in some of the neighborhoods.
Cobra head streetlights need to be reported to CenterPoint, using the
pole number, which is the “address” for the light. It is a six digit number
facing the street. You can report streetlights that are not working or staying
on during the day at http://cnp.centerpointenergy.com/outage (Google
streetlight outage) or give us the pole number and we will do it for you.
Outages or problems with decorative streetlights should be reported to
Inframark at 281-870-0585. Please note the exact intersection or closest
address. The association has a contractor doing a monthly nighttime
inspection for lights that are out, but if you see a problem, please report
it, so we can achieve our goal to keep all the lights on all the time.
HEARTHSTONE HOA EMAIL ALERTS
SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM
1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and
do not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person
is anyone you do not recognize on your street).
2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any
vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your
street that you don’t recognize).
3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are
at home.
4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position.
5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police
catch the bad guys.
6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town.
7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge
that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone
that you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you
to be home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check
them out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors.
8. If you have children that stay at home
alone, no matter what their age, they need
to go to the door and have a preplanned
story for whoever is there (my dad is working
on the computer, he says to come back
later). Then have them call the constable’s
office.
9. Never do business with people you don
not know and trust. Never open the door
for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood
buys anything from them, the companies
that they work for will quit sending them
into your subdivision.
10. Always lock your vehicles and never
leave anything of value in plain sight
count).
LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE
Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their owners, but all dog owners should ensure
that there is a tag on each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that
make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.
REMINDER:
Please be mindful of the Harris County Leash Law and be certain that your pets are on a leash when
not confined to your home or backyard.
VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION
The Veterinary Public Health Division posts photos of all animals found on their website and
updates it twice daily. If you have lost your pet, please check this website, www.hcphes.org/vph.
Have you found a pet?
First, think of the animal as lost and not abandoned and make every effort to reunite the animal to an owner.
Contact the HCPH VPH office by telephone and report the animal as found.
Bring the animal to the HCPH VPH facility or check with a local veterinarian to scan the animal for a
microchip.
Return to the place where you found the animal and put up a found pet poster near that location.
If you find the owner, especially off a newspaper or website posting, ask them to provide a picture of the
animal and meet in a public place like a police station.
More information about Microchips & Microchip companies
A microchip is a small device (size of a grain of rice) that is permanent and implanted with a needle under
the skin of pets.
Pets do not have to be given any pain medication or anesthesia to implant a microchip.
Microchips are not likely to move or need repair if implanted correctly.
Microchips, when scanned, show a unique code. The microchip must be registered with the corresponding
microchip manufacture to record any owner and animal data.
Microchips do not work like GPS locators or LoJack and cannot give a signal to find the location of your lost pet.
NATIONAL BLACK HISTORY MONTH
February is National Black History Month, also known as National
African American History Month, a time for all Americans to celebrate
the achievements of African Americans and recognize their central role
in American history.
Other countries, including Canada and Great Britain, have also set aside
months to honor black history. The month of February was chosen to
coincide with the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and noted
civil rights advocate Frederick Douglass. The first record of Africans
arriving in North America is dated 1619, when a privateer ship carrying
“twenty and odd” Africans landed at Point Comfort, Virginia, which is
now modern-day Hampton, Virginia. The Africans were traded as slaves
in exchange for provisions.
African-American’s impact our society throughout history and in numerous
ways. Here are just a few prominent individuals we honor this month:
“The ag program in CFISD has grown by leaps and bounds since our first
districtwide livestock show in 1995,” said Denise Kubecka, lead curriculum
coordinator in the career and technical education department.
“Over the last 25 years, the program grew from eight ag teachers across
five high schools to 32 teachers supporting over 3,000 students across
12 high schools. The CFISD Livestock Show is one of the many opportunities
these students have to develop skills in project management,
responsibility and perseverance; all skills needed to be successful in life.
The countless hours spent raising livestock or designing and building
projects is evident the moment they step in the arena.”
LANGHAM CREEK STUDENT SURPRISED
WITH $5,000 RELIANT SCHOLARSHIP
Langham Creek High School senior softball player Haley Samuelsen was
among eight Houston-area students surprised by Reliant and the Houston
Texans with a $5,000 scholarship during the energy company’s second annual
charity flag football game on November 12 th .
Samuelsen is a three-year letterwinner with the Langham Creek softball program
entering her final season and earned all-district accolades in each of her
first three years. In addition to her excellence in the classroom and heavy involvement
in numerous clubs and organizations on campus, Samuelsen is also
a member of the Superintendent’s Student Leadership Advisory Committee.
Those accolades made her an ideal candidate for Reliant’s Scholarship for
Champions program, which recognizes Houston-area students for their
leadership in athletics, academics and community involvement. It began in
2005 and has awarded $480,000 to 96 students.
Candidates must play on a varsity team, maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point
average and plan to pursue a college degree.
Making the surprise even more special for Samuelsen and the other seven
recipients is they were given the news by Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun
Watson. He commended the students for their dedication to athletics
and academics and emphasized the importance of leadership and giving back
to the local community.
Houston Methodist Training
Center on November 12 th and
then is shown on the NRG Stadium jumbotron during the Houston Texans’
game December 9 th against the Indianapolis Colts.
“We love being able to recognize hardworking, deserving students through
our Scholarship for Champions program,” Reliant Present Elizabeth Killinger
said. “We also were happy to have Deshaun Watson, who is an excellent role
model both on the field and in life, present to help celebrate these students’
accomplishments. Our work with Deshaun to ‘Power It Forward’ through
community involvement is part of our commitment to being a positive force
in the community.”
Each recipient posed for photos with Watson, who was also joined at the event
by Houston Texans cheerleaders and TORO, the team’s mascot.
“I helped power it forward for these students because it gave them a little bit
more hope and belief that they can be able to achieve anything they want to
even before they get on a college campus,” Watson said.
The students concluded their day by joining local media personalities for a
game of flag football to help raise money for nonprofit organizations. The honorees
were also recognized during the Houston Texans’ game December 9 th .
ST. CUTHBERT SCHOOL
2019-2020 Registration
INTERESTED IN HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT?
Now that the holidays are over and everyone is settling back down again into their
daily lives, why not consider hosting a foreign exchange student for the 2019/2020
school year. STS Foundation is now accepting applications from prospective host
families - all it takes to host is to provide a place for the student to sleep, three
meals a day and a willingness to share your life with one of our amazing students!
Meet Emma from Denmark - Most of the time I’m a quite happy person. I’m very
honest and thoughtful. I usually worry about others before myself. Usually I’m
not shy and I don’t have a problem making new acquaintances. I’m helpful and
enjoy helping others out. I also love to hang out with my friends after school.
I’m not very sporty, but I still like the thought of staying healthy, so I go for a run
with a friend sometimes, I like to read books, but I also enjoy writing. Different
short stories, mostly just for me. I also enjoy dancing. It’s not something I go to,
because of the not so good opportunities in my area. I really like to act as well.
We only have one drama school in my area and it isn’t very good, but I have been
in a few school plays.
And here’s Diego from Spain - I am a very active and sportive boy. I am also a very
sociable person, so I think this experience may be a good one. Meeting new people
and having new friends are some of the things I would enjoy about this experience.
I’m a person who has lots of interests, for example I am always wanting to learn
new things such as the culture of other countries or even at school I’m interested
in nearly all the subjects. I think that I am also very mature and self-motivated. My
interests are mostly related to sports (swimming, skiing and playing soccer), but I
also have other cultural interests. For example, I love geography, knowing every
place and learning interesting facts about them. I’m also interested in cooking. I
usually cook on weekends with my father and we make really good dishes. Finally,
I like to play videogames with my friends or going out with them. We usually go
to the movies or to have dinner.
If you are interested in learning more about Emma, Diego or any of our other
students, please give me a call - I’d love to talk to you about hosting! I can be
reached at 832-455-7881 or at vicki.stsfoundation@yahoo.com.
ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence
their adult lives.
BOY SCOUT TROOP 10
Boy Scout Troop 10 has a new home! We now meet at Copperfield
Church on Monday evenings from 7-8:30 PM. Our meeting rooms are
upstairs in conference room #3. Please enter through the front doors of
the church, head up the stairs and feel free to come visit us at any time!
Troop 10 has a campout scheduled for every month of the school year,
which gives the Scouts ample opportunities to earn their ranks and
many assorted merit badges.
In January we went to Bastrop State Park for a three day weekend
where we did a 15 mile bike ride and worked on Camping, Cooking and
Environmental Science merit badges. We also played games and
had Dutch oven cobblers! The weather was perfect for camping and
everyone had a great time.
The Troop had a special outing at Stone Moves, an indoor climbing center,
to work on climbing skills and spend time together over the Holidays.
We would also like to congratulate Ryan Kubiak, our Senior Patrol
Leader, on his attendance to National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT).
NYLT is provided by BSA to teach young adults ways in which they can
communicate with other young adults in a constructive manner. It also
teaches ways to lead other youth and coping mechanisms for youth that
may need minor redirection under their watch. Ryan took a week of his
time during the school break and traveled to Tellepsen Scout Ranch at
Bovay to attend the training.
In addition, Ryan is the Chapter Chief of the Big Cypress OA (Order
of the Arrow) Chapter and as such takes part in many if not all of the
local ceremonies. We are very proud of him and proud that our Troop
is involved with the OA experience through Ryan.
If you have a young man in 6 th grade or higher that would like to visit,
you can contact us at Troopwebhost.org/troop10houston/index.htm
or contact Chris Kubiak at ckubiak95@comcast.net or 281-382-2643 or
HISTORY OF VALENTINE’S DAY
According to church tradition St. Valentine was a priest near Rome in
about the year 270 A.D. At that time the Roman Emperor Claudius-II
had issued an edict forbidding marriage Claudius felt that married men
were more emotionally very attached to their families and thus, will not
make good soldiers. So to assure quality soldiers, he banned marriage.
Valentine, a bishop, seeing the trauma of young lovers, met them in a
secret place and joined them in the sacrament of matrimony. Claudius
learned of this “friend of lovers” and had him arrested. The emperor,
impressed with the young priest’s dignity and conviction, attempted
to convert him to the roman gods, to save him from certain execution.
Valentine refused to recognize Roman Gods and even attempted to
convert the emperor, knowing the consequences fully. On February 24,
270 A.D., Valentine was executed.
While Valentine was in prison awaiting his fate, he came in contact with
his jailer, Asterius, who had a blind daughter. Asterius requested him to
heal his daughter. Through his faith he miraculously restored the sight
of Asterius’ daughter. Just before his execution, he asked for pen and
paper from his jailor and signed a farewell message to her “From Your
Valentine,” a phrase that lived ever after.
Valentine thus become a Patron Saint and spiritual overseer of an annual
festival. The festival involved young Romans offering women they
admired and wished to court, handwritten greetings of affection on
February 14. The greeting cards acquired St.Valentine’s name.
The Valentine’s Day card spread with Christianity and is now celebrated
all over the world. One of the earliest card was sent in 1415 by Charles,
Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was a prisoner in the Tower of
London. The card is now preserved in the British Museum.
GIFT IDEAS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY
• Talk with your loved one and gift at-least half of the money you would
spend for the gifts, to missionaries or for the poor. You will have the best
of feelings inside you.
• Pack a Chocolate Box with heart-printed wrapping paper and sign it
with a tag.
• Copy (or write) a love poem on a good letter pad and express your
special thoughts. You can also add it on with any other gifts that you
are planning to give. You could also send a free virtual greeting, because
they are very popular now and one expects them at every occasion.
• Material gifts are not the only things you can give, there could be better
options. Plan out a special dinner with your sweetheart. It could be a
candlelight or an open-air. But it has to be special in someway, otherwise
the charm will be lost. If you do not have the option of making it special,
plan for some sort of surprise that you can give right after the dinner.
• Stuffed toys are more popular than ever and always a great gift for
her. Check out the local stores, you will be surprised with the variety.
• If you would like to spend lots of money, think about diamond necklaces.
They have a lasting impression!
• Flowers! Possibly the most widely used gift, yet never loses its color.
Do not miss this wonderful occasion to present some lovely flowers to
your love. Just drop in to your local florist.
• Arrange for home-delivery of some freshly cooked food, like dishes of
fish and include the message: “Just as fresh as my Love for you.”
• Try to figure out if your love wants or requires something but has yet
to buy it. If you have figured it out, you got it. It will be the best gift you
can give. But careful, you must be dead sure that he or she is yet to get
it for himself or herself.
• Plan out the day someplace else or if you do not have much time, go
for a drive to a not-so-crowded-place after work. Could be a great gift.
• Buy a jack-in-the-box and fix your small love note on jack and have
someone deliver your present to your love. The effect is electrifyingly
surprising!
• Buy a book or a CD on Love and then present it.
