The Star 3 News Local News Now Fountain cascading water again Town hall’s symbolic neighbour BACK IN ACTION: The iconic Ferrier Fountain outside the town hall was turned on yesterday after it was damaged in the earthquake eight years ago. THE ICONIC Ferrier Fountain has been turned back on. The artwork reclaimed its home next to Victoria Square as part of the town hall’s restoration. Staff from contractor Hawkins had been testing the restored fountain over the last week and turned it back on yesterday, ahead of the town hall reopening on Saturday. Mayor Lianne Dalziel said the return of the fountain to its rightful spot marks another major step in the town hall rebuild. “I am looking forward to the fountain’s return,” she said. “I can remember seeing the famous El Alamein Fountain in Sydney when I was a child, and I thought that was amazing. However, only a few years later, when the Ferrier Fountain was revealed, it was even better.” “The fountain became one of the most iconic images of Christchurch and it is very special seeing it returned to our city.” Installed in 1972, the threehead fountain and adjacent southern terraces were badly damaged during the September 4, 2010, and February 22, 2011, earthquakes. However, the retaining wall was largely unaffected. The fountain was donated by two of the city’s most well-known benefactors, Claude Jack Ferrier and his wife, Marjorie, the daughter of Robert McDougall. Thursday February 21 2019 in brief Fire rages, homes at risk 12-year-old caught with stolen credit card A 12-year-old has been caught using a stolen credit card after a car was broken into at Lamb and Hayward’s Avon Park Chapel funeral home in Linwood. The break-in was reported to police at about 6pm on Sunday, a wallet and cellphone were stolen. The credit card was presented at a Wainoni petrol station just before 7pm. Police took a youth into custody at 7.10pm. Serious injuries after nose-to-tail crash One patient was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on Blenheim Rd yesterday. A Fire and Emergency spokeswoman confirmed the crash, which happened just after noon, was a nose-to-tail between two vehicles. Fire ban remains through hot weather A total fire ban remains in place as hot, gusty north-west winds are forecast for greater Christchurch and Banks Peninsula for the next two days. Temperatures are expected to climb into the 30s today but the humidity will remain relatively low, creating tinderdry ground conditions. The fire ban prohibits any outdoor fires in both rural and urban areas. However, a southerly change is forecast for tomorrow afternoon, with lower temperatures and rain. Temperatures will drop markedly from Sunday, with south-west winds. High tide flood warning Unusually high tides are expected today and tomorrow, which is likely to cause surface flooding on some low-lying roads. The flooding is likely to occur for an hour or so either side of high tide and is unlikely to impact private properties. The high tide is due to peak about 8am and 8.30pm today, and at 9am and 9.30pm tomorrow.
