Social Hall<br />

The second public building erected in Salt Lake<br />

City was the Social Half built on the east side of State<br />

Street between South Temple and First South, Opened<br />

for use on Jan* 1, 1853, the adobe building had two<br />

floors* a half-basement and a main floor. The building s<br />

primary use was for social gatherings* balls* feasts, ama¬<br />

teur theatricals* and birthday anniversaries of promi¬<br />

nent people* Serving the community for many years,<br />

the building was torn down in May of 1922*12 (See<br />

Tithing House<br />

A central tithing office and storehouse* known as<br />

the General Tithing Office and Bishops General<br />

Storehouse, was set up in Salt Lake City in 1850 to<br />

serve the entire Church* Occupying half a block, the<br />

storehouse was under the direction of the Presiding<br />

Bishop of the Church ,<br />

"Produce and stock tithing was a tenth of the yield<br />

of household, farm, ranch, factory* or mine* Bishops<br />

were urged to keep close watch on the yields of their<br />

ward members. Produce tithing, such as dairy and<br />

poultry products, was usually used to support laborers<br />

on church public works. , * . During this period little<br />

was simply a handwritten notation like the following:<br />

Rro, E. Bingham [Bishop of Ogden North Ward]<br />

'Newton Goodale has deposited at this office<br />

[General Tithing Office] sixteen and a half bushels<br />

of wheat* Please pay him the same amount out of the<br />

Tithing in your charge* and we will a/e when you re¬<br />

turn this Order.<br />

City Wall<br />

On Tuesday Aug* 23* 1853, Brigham Young wrote;<br />

"The Bishops of all the wards in Salt Lake City met with<br />

the City Council in the State House and all their wards<br />

unanimous for walling in the whole of the city with a<br />

good ditch on the outside of the wail* whereupon the<br />

city council appointed Albert Carrington* Parley P*<br />

Pratt and Franklin D* Richards a committee to locate<br />

the line of said wall and report thereon on the 27th*<br />

from which date the wall and ditch are to be labored<br />

upon with all diligence until completed”14<br />

Intended as a means of protecting the Saints and<br />

their cattle from the Indians, the wall was com¬<br />

pleted by early spring* 1854. The clay wall
