DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME IN 2019 

Spring ahead March 10th, 2019 

When does Daylight Saving Time 2019 begin and when does DST end? The Old Farmer’s Almanac 

(around since the beginning of time or, at least, Benjamin Franklin’s day) answers your 

frequent questions … 

WHAT IS DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME? 

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of moving the clocks forward one hour from Standard 

Time for the summer months and changing them back again in the fall. The general idea is that 

this allows us all to make better use of natural daylight. However, DST has many detractors. 

Note that the term is “Daylight Saving Time” and not “Daylight Savings Time” with an “s” 

at the end of “Saving.” (The word “saving” is singular because it acts as part of an adjective 

rather than a verb.) 

WHEN IS DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME IN 2019? 

To remember which way to set their clocks, folks often use the expression, “Spring forward, fall back.” DST begins on Sunday, March 

10, 2019 at 2 AM. Remember to “spring forward” in the spring and set your clocks forward one hour (i.e., losing one hour). DST ends 

on Sunday, November 3, 2019 at 2 AM. At this time, we “fall back” in the fall by setting clocks back one hour (i.e., gaining one hour). The 

exceptions to DST are Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and American Samoa. 

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME TODAY 

The current daylight saving period was established with the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which went into effect in 2007. As a result, most 

Americans now spring forward (turn clocks ahead and lose an hour) on the second Sunday in March (at 2 AM.) and fall back (turn clocks 

back and gain an hour) on the first Sunday in November (at 2 AM.). 

However, farmers’ organizations lobby Congress against the practice, preferring early daylight to dry their fields and a Standard Time 

sunset for ending their work at a reasonable hour. Some farmers point out that the Daylight Saving Time is deceptively misnamed. “It 

is a gimmick that changes the relationship between ‘Sun’ time and ‘clock’ time but saves neither time nor daylight,” says Katherine 

Dutro, spokesperson for the Indiana Farm Bureau. One Canadian researcher likened an increase in traffic accidents to the onset of

Spring Garage Sale 

The Grayson Lakes Community Garage Sale will be held in April. Similar 

to last fall, we will be creating a list of homes participating along with 

items available at each sale. There will also be a neighborhood preview 

sale the evening before from 6:30 PM-7:30 PM open to Grayson Lakes 

residents only. These are both optional for residents to participate. There

Grayson Lakes Community Pool 

The Grayson Lakes Community Pool is open between March 1 st and 

October 31 st to all residents and their guests from the hours of 6 AM to 

10 PM Tuesday through Sunday. Note that the pool is closed for heavy 

cleaning on Mondays with the exception of Memorial Day and Labor Day. 

Chemical levels are high on Mondays so the pool is closed for your safety. 

GRAYSON LAKES POOL RULES HIGHLIGHTS: 

• Residents are allowed 4 guests per household and guests are to be 

accompanied by a resident 18 or older. 

• All children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult (18 

or older). 

• No food, drinks or gum are allowed in the pool. 

• No pets are allowed in the pool area. 

• Furniture does not belong in the pool and can cause damage to the pool 

and the furniture itself if misused. 

• The pool and pool area are cleaned twice a week. Please help maintain 

the facilities so that it can be enjoyed by all our residents. 

A pool access card is available for $15 and is required to enter the pool.

After a decade of fun and frivolity in our neighborhood, a number of our

chairperson). The events that need a coordinator are the Easter 

Eggstravaganza, July 4 th Parade and Holiday Event with Santa. Is there

Meetings of the Grayson Lakes Board of Directors are held the third 

Wednesday of every month except September. The meetings are 

held in the Grayson Lakes Clubhouse and start at 6:30 PM. Residents 

wishing to observe need only show up. Residents wishing to speak are 

asked to inform the Management Company at Karen.Janczak@crestmanagement.com 

requesting to be placed on the agenda. Please do 

this no later than 8 days before the meeting since agendas are prepared 

a week in advance. If you will indicate the nature of your business

eforehand, it will give the Management Company and your Board a 

chance to prepare for questions that might come up. Please be advised, 

it is your Board’s practice to limit initial comments from residents to 5 

minutes, so plan accordingly.

Nottingham Country Garden Club 

On Thursday, March 7, 2019, Nottingham Country Garden Club (NCGC) 

will feature Don Dubois who will speak on “Butterfly Survival Strategies.” 

His talk will include three butterfly families, a Swallowtail, a Nymphalid 

and a Heliconian. (Spicebush swallowtail, Goatweed leafwing, Zebra 

longwing). Don is a volunteer at Mercer Botanical Gardens. We look 

forward to hearing him speak. 

Monthly meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month from 

September through May. We welcome all people interested in gardening 

and gardening related topics. We serve the West Houston and Katy 

areas. You do not have to live in the Nottingham Country neighborhood 

to belong to our group! NCGC is a non-profit organization affiliated with 

the Houston Federation of Garden Clubs, the Texas State Garden Clubs 

and the National Garden Clubs. The purpose of the club is to promote 

the beautification of our community, support local and national 

educational and civic organizations and educate the community about

New Superintendent 

Of Schools 

At the Katy ISD Work Study meeting held 

January 14 th , Board of Trustees voted 

7-0 to name Ken Gregorski as the new 

superintendent of schools. Gregorski 

is a veteran educator with 26 years of 

experience in public education. Having 

served as a teacher, associate principal, 

principal, assistant superintendent and 

deputy superintendent in school districts of different sizes and varying 

needs, he has demonstrated the ability to lead with determination, 

vision and a deep understanding of a community’s priorities. He is also 

the father of two secondary students currently enrolled in Katy ISD 

schools. “It is my mission to provide leadership and direction for Katy 

ISD to ensure our educational system is based upon the needs of our 

students, standards of excellence and equity and on community goals,” 

said new Superintendent of Schools Ken Gregorski. During his tenure as 

deputy superintendent, Gregorski played an integral role in laying the 

groundwork for the current model of student learning in Katy ISD through 

his supervision of the School Leadership and Support Department, 

Human Resources and the Athletics Department. As superintendent of 

schools, it is expected that Gregorski will maintain Katy ISD’s current 

direction, sustain its continuity of leadership and guide the District 

toward fulfilling the goals of its five-year strategic plan.

The Katy ISD Virtual School’s primary objective is to expand the learning 

opportunities for our students by offering choice and flexibility for 

challenging online courses developed by Katy ISD.

Online learning is an essential part of today’s learning culture that can

anywhere and at any time. Online learning offers the unique experience 

of self-directed learning that will instill advanced learning skills as well 

as the Katy ISD Instructional Cornerstones in our students and better 

prepare them for life and college. In today’s world, this model of learning 

is increasingly in high demand and is a cost effective way to deliver 

instruction. It is a worthwhile investment in the future of our students 

and eventually can be self-sustained financially.

Why Take Online Courses through the Katy ISD Virtual School (KVS)

Katy ISD Names 

New Junior High 

After Joe M. Adams 

Katy Independent School District Board of 

Trustees approved to name the District’s 

newest junior high school after Joe M. 

Adams. The new school is currently 

being built in the southwest quadrant 

of the District in the Cross Creek Ranch 

subdivision. Adams served on the Katy 

ISD Board of Trustees for 27 years in every 

Board position and continues to be actively 

involved in various school and community functions. Adams served as 

director on the Gulf Coast Area Association of School Boards and was also 

part of the Board of Directors for the Texas Association of School Boards 

(TASB). During his time on that Board, he earned the distinguished honor 

of being a graduate of Leadership TASB and was named a Master Trustee. 

Adams was a Keep Encouraging Youth toward Success (KEYS) mentor 

and volunteer at Taylor High School where he was named Mentor of the 

Year in 2013. He actively participated as a Promise to Read and Junior 

Achievement volunteer. Adams was also a member of various PTA/PTO 

organizations and a Taylor High School Band Booster over the years. He 

also participated in various bond and attendance boundary modification 

committees and was a founding director of the Katy ISD Education 

Foundation. Adams’ dedication to these initiatives showcased and 

reflected his character, vision and values. His commitment to Katy went 

beyond his involvement in the District as he has served as a member, 

deacon and adult Sunday school director at Kingsland Baptist Church, a 

Katy Christian Ministries volunteer and a member of the Katy A&M Club, 

Houston A&M Club, 12 th Man Association and IMPACT. Adams was also a 

former soccer coach for local leagues. During his 27-year tenure at the 

Katy ISD Board of Trustees, Adams experienced the district’s exponential 

growth and was instrumental in ensuring that Katy ISD’s reputation for 

educational excellence continued. He brought a wealth of knowledge to 

his position and along with his genuine passion for public schools, made 

decisions based on what was in the best interest of the District’s students 

and employees. His contributions impacted thousands of students and 

their families. In addition to his steadfast devotion to the students of 

Katy ISD, his professional career consisted of 30 years in the oil and gas 

industry working for several serviced/drilling companies in New Orleans, 

Dallas, London and Cairo, Egypt. He is also a small-business owner in 

Katy, TX. 

Adams holds a B.B.A in Marketing from Texas A&M University. He and his 

wife, Donna, have two children and seven grandchildren.

KATY AREA SAFETY FEST ORGANIZERS EXPECTING 

10,000 GUESTS FOR 4 TH ANNUAL EVENT 

The 4 th Annual Katy Area Safety Fest hosted by Harris County ESD 48 will 

be held on Saturday, April 13 th at Typhoon Texas off Katy-Ft. Bend Road. 

The family-friendly festival will begin at 10 AM and will end at 3 PM. The 

event is open to the public and admission is free. The Katy Area Safety 

Fest (KASF) will feature personnel, equipment and interactive activities 

from more than 20 emergency response agencies serving the Greater 

Katy community. The goal of KASF is to connect community members 

to the men and women who serve in these agencies as well as provide 

education and resources to encourage safety preparedness. Guests will 

see and participate in a variety of fun, educational, high-energy activities 

such as the Passport Challenge scavenger hunt, vehicle and equipment 

tours, live demonstrations of vehicle extrications and much more. 

Harris County ESD 47 and Westlake Volunteer Fire Department are cosponsoring 

the KASF Kids Zone, which will feature bounce houses, a corn 

field maze, obstacle course and ambulance load & go demonstration. 

Westlake Volunteer Fire Department is also leading this year’s Firehouse 

Challenge Cup, an open competition that encourages firefighter fitness 

and demonstrates the profession’s rigors to the public. Wearing full 

turnout gear and Scott 5.5 Air-Pak breathing apparatus, teams of 2 

will race head-to-head while simulating the physical demands of reallife 

firefighting. The Firehouse Challenge Cup is open to any members 

of a firehouse, including firefighters, EMTs and paramedics and admin 

personnel. There is no fee to enter and the 3 teams with the fastest times 

will win Firehouse Challenge Cup plaques. 

While most of the activities inside the festival will be free, rides in the fire 

truck tower buckets will cost a small fee. Food vendors will also be set up 

at KASF selling delicious treats and eats to festival guests. Members of 

School of Rock - Katy will provide live musical entertainment throughout 

the afternoon from the main stage.

Sleep In Heavenly Peace 

Every night in the Houston area, children sleep on couches, bean bag 

chairs or the floor because they don’t have a bed, especially since 

Hurricane Harvey. A local chapter of Sleep In Heavenly Peace (SHP) has 

been started for Central-Western Houston, including Katy and Fulshear. 

SHP is a nationwide 501(c)3 charity that builds and delivers beds to 

needy children using donated materials and volunteer labor. Sponsoring 

organizations (companies, churches, fire departments, etc.) donate 

materials and provide 20-40+ volunteers to produce 20-40+ beds in 

half-day “Builds” and SHP delivers to needy families. The half day bed 

Builds are an excellent Teambuilding or Service Project for organizations 

wanting to make their community better. For organizations unable to 

provide 20-40+ volunteers, labor can be supplemented from Scouting 

troops or high school students. Material costs for 20-40+ beds amount to 

$3,500-$7,000. SHP receives requests for beds at SHPbed.org in English 

or Spanish. Organizations interested in sponsoring a half-day bed Build 

can contact 832-795-2759. SHP was founded by Luke Mickleson in Twin 

Falls ID in 2012 and has since grown to 130+ chapters nationwide. SHP 

has been reported on by Lester Holt on NBC Nightly News and by Mike 

Rowe on “Returning the Favor” on the Facebook Watch Network. In 2018, 

Luke Mickleson was named one of ten Heroes of the Year by CNN.

National Charity League, Inc., Star 

Chapter’s Recognizes Senior Class 

For Achievement In 2019 

National Charity League, Inc., Star Chapter (NCL, Inc.), announced that 

they will honor the Senior Class of 2019 at the Star Chapter’s annual 

Senior Recognition Ceremony. This formal event will take place at the 

Sugar Land Marriott Town Square. The evening includes recognition 

of each of these 24 graduating seniors for their accomplishments and 

contributions to the community, as well as dinner and dancing with 

family and friends in attendance. 

Over the past six years, these young ladies, alongside their mothers, have 

contributed over 8,008 volunteer hours at 29 local charities throughout 

the community. The Class of 2019 volunteered at The Westview School, 

Neighborhood Kidz Club, Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP), Interfaith 

Ministries (Meals on Wheels), The Ballard House, Fulshear/Simonton 

Library, Katy Christian Ministries, Fort Bend Women’s Center, Oakmont 

Nursing Home, The Krause Center, The Monty Ballard YMCA and Willow 

River Farms, to name a few. 

In addition to serving their community through volunteering, these 

young ladies were also honing leadership skills and developing cultural 

awareness by planning and attending educational meetings, chapterwide 

events, socials, class retreats and cultural events that included the 

ballet, opera and theatre. 

About National Charity League, Inc., Star Chapter 

National Charity League, Inc., Star Chapter currently has 321 Members 

and provides hands-on volunteer service for thirty philanthropic 

organizations in the community. Members are women and their 

daughters, grades 7-12. Through this community service, NCL, Inc. 

develops socially responsible community leaders and strengthens the 

mother-daughter relationship. The traditional Six Year Core Program 

also includes leadership development and cultural experiences. 

Mother-daughter teams nationwide are responsible, dedicated, skilled 

volunteers actively engaged in local community work in 27 states across
