LIMERICKS
Last summer I went on a tour of southern Ireland
and we stayed in the town of Limerick one night. Our
tour guide challenged us all to try creating a limerick
of our own by the end of the trip, when we would
read them aloud. Mine received a prize (chocolate!).
Limericks are associated with Edward Lear, who
first published this verse form in his book A Book of
Nonsense in the year 1846. Later, this form became
popular and many poets tried their hands at this form
of poetry. Here are a few examples of limericks:
There was an old man with a beard,
Who said, “It is just as I feared!
Two owls and a hen,
Four larks and a wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!”
by Edward Lear
There was a small boy of Quebec
Who was buried in snow to his neck
When they said, “Are you friz?”
He replied, “Yes, I is —
But we don’t call this cold in Quebec.”
by Rudyard Kipling
There was a young lady called Harris
That nothing could ever embarrass
Till the bath salts, one day
In the tub where she lay
Turned out to be Plaster of Paris.
by Ogden Nash
There was a young lady of station
“I love man” was her sole exclamation;
But when men cried: “You flatter,”
She replied, “Oh! No matter,
Isle of Man is the true explanation.”
by Lewis Carroll
An Irish Limerick
There once was a fiddler named Gerry
Whose tunes made everyone merry.
They drank lots of ale,
The dark and the pale,
When he played in the taverns of Kerry.
