Real Lives: Living the Faith in Bournemouth and more ....

A Sower
went out to sow...
The next time you are in Central London ,
check out the front of the old Broadcasting
House, Langham Place. You will see on the
street facing portico the biblical image of a
sower scattering seed.
Lord Reith, the brains behind the BBC as a
public broadcasting service, was influenced
by his Christian heritage.
He understood the value of communication
and the power of the word. So he took his
inspiration from the gospel and from Jesus’
parable about the sower who broadcast the
seed widely.
That remains a key task of the Church today.
We are to communicate the message far
and wide. And in a multiple media platform
world, that means using the internet and
social media effectively. Have a listen to our
new Podcasting programme as the most
recent example of that.
But there is another form of communication
which is more important than all of our
intiatives in talking to others- speaking to
God.
Our next Prayer Emphasis Week provides us
with a magnificent opportunity to do just
that - broadcast our needs to the God of
heaven.
So do join us for that. The impact of our
words to others is in direct proportion to our
engagement with the One before whom all
hearts are open and from whom no secrets
are hidden .
podcast
Dictionary result for podcast
1.a digital audio file made available on the Internet
for downloading to a computer or mobile device,
typically available as a series, new instalments of
which can be received by subscribers automatically.
As a church we have been producing
podcasts from our Sunday sermons for
years. That might be news to you? We also
publish podcasts from the Monday ‘Life’
Student/18-30s gatherings, which in recent
months have covered subjects such as
‘What does the Bible say about alcohol’ and
‘Relationships #1 – Dating’.
The Podcasting
team is small
but perfectly
formed: Stu
Bilsbrough
has been
producing his
own podcast
‘Crossed Wires:
Living a Christian
Life in a Digital
Age’ for 2 years with
co-hosts Benjamin
Sillence and Oli
Warner.
George Sharpe
is a journalist
who works for
Wessex FM and
freelances at the
BBC. Both Stu and
George have one thing
in common – they are podcast fanatics!
Over the last few months we have discussed
how the Podcasting ministry at Lansdowne
can be expanded to reach new and larger
audiences. With that in mind from March
this year ‘Real Lives: Living the Faith in
Bournemouth’ has been born. These monthly
podcasts are interviews with real people
sharing their real stories of faith, struggles
and victories. Our hope and prayer is that
these short (15 – 20 minute) interviews will
inspire, encourage and challenge us as a
community of God’s people, but also be used
with our friends and family to demonstrate
the reality and power of God’s love in our
lives.
Our first podcast in this series is with
Helen Martin, our Creche Ministry Leader,
part-time Administration Assistant and
full-time mother and wife. Helen’s been
at Lansdowne since 2006. She grew up in a
Christian home but lost her father when she
was young. As a teenager, she had doubts
and it wasn’t until she had a car crash later
in life that she realised what her faith meant
to her.
Do join us in sharing these journeys, we will
be publicizing them on social media, Bite-
Sized and in this magazine.
Laura Wood | Communications and
Administration Controller
Our first Real Lives Podcast will be available in March,
keep an eye out for its launch in Bite-Sized and on our
website and Social Media Channels

The
Power
of Prayer

In a recent sermon we were reminded that people rarely pray
because they know they ought to; rather, people pray when they
realise there’s nothing else they can do! We get on our knees when
we become aware of the task that we’re called to. How can we share
Christ with all those who don’t know him? How can we grow in our
holiness? How can we imitate Jesus in our workplace, or our home?
How can we close the funding gap for our new building? How can we
reach the complex communities of Townsend, Stroudon Park, and
Lansdowne? How can we meet the deep needs of suffering church
members with the love of Christ? How can we stand in solidarity with
our persecuted brothers and sisters across the globe?
The simple answer is: “We can’t!”
Well, we can’t on our own. We can’t without God.
Of course, the good news is that we were never called to do any
of these things without him. Whenever we become aware of our
inadequacy, we should let it drive us to prayer. The history of
the church is a history of God doing remarkable things, through
unimpressive people, in response to prayer. When we fail to pray
(and surely we’re all guilty of this at times) it’s as though we’re
saying to God, “I can do it myself. Don’t worry, I’ve got it covered.”
Paul warns the church in Galatia not to slip into this kind of selfreliance.
The Christians he writes to were saved by the grace of
God—of course they were. But now many of them were trying to
stumble through their Christian lives under their own steam. So, Paul
challenges them, “Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the
Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?” (Galatians
3:3). Like the church in Galatia, we need the Spirit of God. We need
to pray.
During the week leading up to Easter (Monday 15th – Friday 19th
April) we’ll be gathering at different times and in different places
to focus on prayer. I’d really encourage you to come along to as
much of the week as you can. Dates and locations will follow shortly,
but let’s get this week in your diaries and make praying together a
priority this year.
In the meantime, how can we be praying? Here are some suggestions
from a short book called 5 Things to Pray for Your Church, each
drawn from Ephesians 4:11-16.
1. Thank God for the leaders that “Christ himself” has given your
church, “to equip his people for works of service” (11-12)
2. Pray that we might “reach unity” (13)
3. Pray that your church would be growing more and more into “the
mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ” (15)
4. Pray that your church would not be “tossed back and forth by the
waves” (14)
5. Ask God to help your church “grow” and “build” one another
up (16)
The
Show
Holiday Club
"Roll up, Roll up!" was the cry of
Barker Keith to our circus themed
holiday club. Roll up they did ! 107
children in all came along to 'The
Greatest Show' this February half term.
What does it take to put on an event
like this ? Well it takes 55 willing
volunteers, about 600 beautifully
decorated sponge cakes, 400 crafts,
and months of preparation. Add to that
a lot of prayer, some great Bible stories
and complete reliance on God! You
then have all the ingredients for one of
the Greatest weeks!
We had some of the greatest stories
from the Bible; Creation, Samson,
and Daniel and finishing with the
Lord Jesus himself. The children
listened intently, sang and danced
enthusiastically and booed, cheered
noisily in the drama.
Our thanks to all of you who prayed
daily for us, volunteered in any
capacity, or donated cakes. We couldn't
have done it without you! Keith Jewell
gave really clear teaching and the
children responded.
We were thrilled that the Grand Finale
on Sunday was well attended by most
of the children and their families. An
exhausting, and exhilarating week but
totally worth it. Can't wait until next
year!
