Captains Report February 2019

Well the weather Gods were thankfully on our side on Sunday for the Reading game,

with a smashing sunny morning. This was amazing considering that the previous 7 days

saw nonstop rain of 140mm recorded at Reading Golf Club. The Greenkeeper, staff and

playing Captain Jan Kruger, need to be commended for getting Reading prepared for the

Nomads after a very difficult and rainy week! The upgrades on the course are looking

good and the dam areas have seen a great improvement. Well done!

To my playing 4 ball - a great day and, thank you for your time and camaraderie on the

course.

A word of thanks to those Nomads that played on the day – especially those who normally

take a cart but had to walk! Reading notified us the day before our game informing

us that no carts would be allowed. This, in turn prompted a exodus of some 13 players

from the entered field resulting in Terry spending many hours on Saturday restructuring

the field. She then contacting the affected players personally, to let them know

that their playing times had changed. Thankyou Terry for all the extra effort. Cheryl,

thanks for helping Terry on Sunday

Brian Algar or rather “Algie” the pump man, Thank you for your sponsorship of this

monthly game. Without your support and other local sponsors like you, Easterns would

not be the club it is today. Remember Nomads, please support your local sponsors. Contact

Brian should you need or know of, anyone interested in fountains, pond, pools,

specialised underwater lights, pumps and Jacuzzi’s!

Sadly, Eastern Nomads had to say a final farewell to a founding member and past captain

- Alan Harris. Alan had a unique Nomadic career of having played 350 games in

succession and only missing a few games due to a back operation. Our thoughts and

prayers are with his family at this sad time. May he Rest in Peace!

Congratulations to Derick Lindsey on his 15-year tie and Rob Gordon and Tommy Van

Der Merwe on their 5 year ties respectively. Thank you to our new inductees, Henk and

Ricu for starting the field under the watchful guidance of Stephen Malherbe. Our fines

master, Peter Bailey, did a sterling job introducing the Committee.

Captains Report

Reading Country Club

Easterns bids farewell to Jarrod Williams who has been on the Committee for the past 5 years,

managing a number of portfolios and, for the past two years, as membership officer. Easterns

thanks Jarrod for his time and services to the club and wishes Dani his fiancée and himself, all the

best in their new adventure in China. We look forward to getting updates from Rod as to their

experiences in the land of the Great Wall!

I am happy to report that Easterns are now the proud holders of the Captains Cup for 2019.

Thank you to Royal Oak, State Mines and Lake Club, for seeing to our every need and helping to

make this competition the great success it was. Thank you to Sean Ledden and the team from

Gauteng for their participation and camaraderie.

On the 24 th of February, Stephen will host the Fellowship Golf Day with 20 Nomads representing

Easterns and 60 Junior Ekurhuleni players participating. This tournament is the brain child of Jimmy

Sales and Dennis Hines, who initiated it some 27 years ago to teach the juniors some golf etiquette.

I am sure a wonderful day will be had by all.

The Firethorn Nationals is upon us! To the selected team, Good luck and I hope I will have the

privilege, as a few past Easterns Captains already have, of raising the Burt Hunt trophy.

Finally, and on a more serious note. I appeal to all those Easterns Nomads who have not yet paid

their Membership and capitation fees, to do so without delay. As per the Nomads constitution,

until paid, you are in breach of membership rules and can be excluded from entering upcoming

fixtures and competitions. Please finalise payments ASAP and send proof of payment to Terry

with the correct reference included.

I hope to see you all at Springs on the 30 th of March. As a club, we are aiming to schedule games

at the clubs that are firstly in our area, as well those that have supported Easterns Nomads extensively

over the past 2 years. Having played the course recently, I can safely say it is in good condition.

Springs Golf Club is hoping to improve vastly on previous experiences and in true Nomadic

spirit, get your entries in so that we can have a field deserved of all the effort they are going to..

Yours in Nomads

It was the first day of sunshine in a week! What a fresh and beautiful

day after all the rain. Conditions were extremely tough and wet, and

it was quite a slog out there! Well done to all the winners who managed

to bring in some great scores, despite all of this.

A very special thank you to Reading Country Club for all the hard

work and efforts you put into to making our day so successful and

enjoyable. The staff went out of their way to help. Thank you!

To Cheryl who was there with me at the crack of dawn! Thank you

for all your assistance during the day! I really appreciate it!

Best of luck to our Nationals team who will be playing at Rand Park.

May you all play well, and enjoy the experience. Fly the Eastern’s

flag high!

Please remember that the fixture date of our next game has been

FELLOWSHIP DAY 2019

BENONI LAKE GOLF CLUB

Dear Stephen

It is most appropriate that we do this letter of thanks to you and all your NOMADS

members. Yesterday’s tournament was really a huge success and words feel inadequate

when it comes to thanking you for the NOMADS contributions and your fine

arrangements regarding the tournament.

Congratulations again to Dirck Wayber and his EGU junior playing partners on winning

the 2019 Four-ball Alliance, to scores to count, element of the tournament.

Please be good enough to pass on our thanks and appreciation to the NOMADS Executive.

Their very generous contributions, commitment and support is very appreciated

and we look forward to a continued happy relationship with all of you.

Kind regards

MARLENE
