STREETWISE MAGAZINE

Welcome to our first

issue of 2019!

After a short break, here we go again.

We are pleased that so many of you have been

in contact with us so soon in to the New Year

and once again this issue covers many important

local issues. On pages 50 to 53 the Newhey and

Milnrow Protect our Greenbelt Group provide an

update on the revised GMSF plan.

The community pages are packed with

information including a guide to what is going

on locally, another fascinating article by local

historian, Gary Heywood Everett, an update on

the much anticipated Milnrow and Newhey

Carnival 2019 and a couple of recipes from

Nutter’s restaurant and your local WI Group.

Something for everyone.

Please remember that advertising in Streetwise

offers great value for money, we offer discounts

for advertising in multiple magazines and the

longer you advertise for, the cheaper it is.

We offer a professional design service should

you need it so you can be sure that your

business is promoted in the right way and that

you get the very best out of your advertising.

Get in touch with either of us for a no obligation,

informal chat and be part of the essential guide

to everything going on locally!

Until next month…

Börek Fritters

SERVES 4

The local butchers hated me for serving this dish up on national TV. I had the Delia effect when

everyone went out buying lamb mince! The flavours of this Middle Eastern appetiser work so

well together, traditionally made with filo pastry, but I use spring roll pastry as it leaves them

crispier when deep fried. Alternatively, for a low fat version the finished parcels can be baked

in a hot oven until crisp and golden.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 onion – chopped fine

1 clove garlic – chopped fine

200g minced lamb

2 teaspoon cumin

1 teaspoon ground coriander

100g feta cheese – diced

50g fresh spinach leaves – shredded

2 spring onions – chopped

Few sheets spring roll pastry

To Serve

2 tablespoons olive oil

Few mixed salad leaves

Method

1. Heat the olive oil and fry the onion and

garlic for 2-3 minutes until softened. Add

the lamb, cumin and coriander and sauté

for 5 minutes – leave to cool.

2. Mix together the cheese, spinach, spring

onions and lamb mixture and season to

taste.

3. Lay out the spring roll pastry, place

spoonfuls of the mixture at one end of the

pastry – roll to form a triangle – brush

with water to stick.

4. Shallow fry in some hot vegetable oil for

2 minutes, until golden and crisp.

100ml yoghurt

5. Serve the parcels with the yoghurt, lemon

Squeeze fresh lemon

and salad leaves.

Date Set for Milnrow Carnival & Summer Fete 2019

Excitement is mounting throughout the borough in anticipation of the Milnrow & Newhey Carnival

and Summer Fete set for Saturday 22nd June 2019. The event is enjoyed by many people each

year, who line the streets to watch the parade and attend the summer fete afterwards at Milnrow

Memorial Park.

The carnival committee aim to maintain tradition, contributing their time voluntarily to organise

a village carnival, which is now in it’s 50th year. The event brings together the local community

with a procession from Newhey to Milnrow and is followed by a fete with stalls and activities. We

encourage Rochdale’s residents to participate, by promoting the event in the months preceding

each year’s summer carnival. Local groups can make their presence known and relationships are

forged. Children and adults alike dress in fancy-dress and a fun day is had by all. The event is

promoted throughout the local press and online and projects a positive image of Rochdale from

within.

Please feel free to get involved! For more information regarding the event or if you would like

to take part in the parade or have a stall at the park, please contact the Carnival Secretary on

07786850266 or email milnrowcarnival@yahoo.com.

On reaching the depot the wagons would

empty the night soil into storage tanks whilst

the pails were washed and chlorinated.

The dried waste was then either burnt or

developed- with the addition of fine ash -

into fertilizer which was sold to local farmers

at £6 10shillings a ton. This early process of

re-cycling of human excrement for

agricultural purposes had been discussed

for decades but never implemented. Records

show that 9000 tons of waste was removed

from the toilets of Rochdale each year and

whilst every effort was to make the system

as hygienic as possible, Rochdale people

often complained about the smells,

especially in difficult winter conditions when

the wagons couldn’t always get round.

Whilst we, with our modern drainage

systems and our water supplies might

blanche at such primitive systems, the

Rochdale Pail system was an improvement

on the middens and must have seemed

quite hygienic compared with what had

gone before. Opinions differed as to the

effectiveness of the Rochdale system, Henry

Roberts in 1873 writing that it failed the

first sanitary laws in that it distributed

rather than confined the smells. Others

such as J R Heape, Rochdale’s Mayor in

1888, commented that the system had

brought ‘comfort and health to the town.’

Although Rochdale was visited by many

from around the globe in the 19th century to

evaluate the system’s effectiveness, it was

not taken up universally possibly because

of its substantial cost to small towns.

Larger towns, however, such as Wakefield,

Salford, Leeds and Huddersfield did take

on the Rochdale system and whilst it had

its faults and dangers to public health it

was a step on the way to transforming the

handling of human waste to the system we

know today.

If you have any memories or

comments about the Rochdale Pail

system or any related issues, I’d be

delighted to hear from you and add

them to a growing Rochdale archive

on the subject. Please contact

Gary Heywood-Everett at

garyheywoodeverett@yahoo.co.uk

or leave your comments by text or by

recorded message at 07745201263.

Gary Heywood-Everett

Gradually Rochdale’s drains and water

supplies were improved and by the

beginning of the 20thcentury the Pail

system or the Rochdale System was

replaced by the water closet and flushing

mechanisms. The Rochdale system is,

however, still used in some parts of the

world, notably in Australia where the

‘dunny’ has achieved something of

comic celebrity.

Milnrow Library Walk and Talk Group

ARE YOU LOOKING TOWARDS A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE

AS YOU START THE NEW YEAR?

If so come and join us, The Milnrow Walk

and Talk Group. We meet every Monday

morning in Milnrow Library ready to start

walking at 10am. There are always two

walk levels which are tailored to suit all

abilities.

1. A faster walk often taking in the hills and

fields around Milnrow and Newhey for the

fitter and more energetic walkers.

2. An easier, more sedate walk which suits

those with a lower fitness level.

This walk is one that is particularly suited to

anyone who has difficulty climbing stiles and

can be extended for a more strenuous walk.

Setting off from the Library, cross Dale Street

and proceed down Ladyhouse Lane, under

the subway and bear right along the footpath

towards Harbour Lane, turn left into Harbour

Lane then at the junction cross the road into

Cricket view and proceed into the Cricket

Club car park.

Bear right in the carpark and using the

signed footpath walk round the pitch, past

the clubhouse and tennis courts to exit the

Cricket Club at the rear gate (onto Buckley

Chase).

Follow Buckley Chase to the right and

continue along this road to the junction with

Buckley Hill Lane.

Turn left onto Buckley Hill Lane and

continue past Whitfield Drive and

Stannybrook Park before taking the

footpath on the right past the rear of JD

Sports towards Michael Faraday Ave. At this

point cross the road and through the

gateway to signed footpath, walking past the

new houses on Jones Way and Wren Way

until you reach the Rochdale Canal.

46 To advertise call 07976 289967 or 07974 434793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

At this point cross the canal using the swing

bridge and turn to the right, continuing along

the canal towpath under the road bridge

(Rochdale Rd). Continue along the towpath

to the next bridge at Bellfield Mill Lane, going

under the bridge before leaving the canal

using the footpath on the left and crossing

over the bridge.

Follow this road to the left for a very short

distance before bearing right in front of

Firgrove Business Park, and continuing onto

the narrow footpath between two fenced

properties, keeping the PDL building on your

right. This path will bring you out onto the

first of the Bellfield Playing fields. Cross this

field at an angle to bring you out on the

cinder track that is the continuation of

Bellfield Lane.

Walk left along this track to the access slope

to the second set of Playing fields (on your

right as you walk). Cross the field and exit

through the gate onto a narrow track that

meets Uncouth Rd.

Cross Uncouth Rd onto Halliwell St passing

behind Thistleyfields Residential complex

and continue along Halliwell St (which

narrows slightly before opening out again to

a road with footpaths) to its junction

with Bridge St.

At the junction turn left continuing along

Bridge St and Dale St to return to the Library.

(approx distance 3.75 miles)

If you wish to extend this walk this is the

point to do so by continuing along the

towpath to the next bridge at Clegg Hall

Lane, leaving the canal here and crossing

over the canal to walk through Clegg Hall

Hamlet, turning right onto Branch Rd and

walking up to wild house Lane, turning right

onto Wildhouse Lane to return to the library

via Kiln Lane and Dale St. (approx distance

5 miles)

SAVE OUR VILLAGES

(NEWHEY & MILNROW) PROTECT OUR GREENBELT GROUP

THE REVISED GREATER

MANCHESTER SPACIAL

FRAMEWORK PLAN HAS

BEEN RELEASED FOR

PUBLIC CONSULTATION!

On the 14th January the revised GMSF

Plan was made available online. You can

access it at: www.gmconsult.org

On this website you can access the full revised

GMSF Plan, an overview document, supporting

documents and lots more. Log onto the

website and read carefully about what is

planned for the Rochdale area but remember

to look at Oldham plans too as the proposed

development site, which will mainly affect

Newhey and Milnrow, is across boundaries.

Also please note that they have decided to

name the site ‘Kingsway South’. This site

includes land from the motorway at Junction

21 travelling across the back of Whitebeam

Close, Bentgate estate, Rivermead, Whitfield

Crescent over to Shaw/High Crompton.

The development spans over to The Fairview

Restaurant. The plan does point out that a

new Greenbelt area has been designated

within this development to become a buffer

between Newhey and Shaw. Otherwise it is

still not clear where the actual houses and

industrial units will be built!

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Manchester, was

instrumental in getting the original GMSF

Plan stopped as the first consultation revealed

strong feelings that:

• developments were excessively weighted

towards green sites

• site selection would not result in the

building of new homes people could afford

• added pressure on already congested

transport system,

• worsening air quality, with development

linked to roads rather than public transport

• not aligned with other GM plans,

particularly transport, housing and

infrastructure

50

To advertise call 07976 289967 or 07974 434793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

As a result of this he now states that “this

radically-revise GMSF is as much a vision for

the environment and quality of life of Greater

Manchester as it is for a new development”.

He states the rewriting of the GMSF is

according to three clear principles;

• a brownfield first approach to the release of

sites for development

• a new priority on town centres for more

residential development

• a new drive to protect the existing

Greenbelt as far as possible

When you read the development plan for

Rochdale, check whether you feel the above

three principles have been taken into account

by Rochdale!

24th July 2018. Wardle High School. Andy

Burnham Question time.

OVERVIEW OF THE PLAN FOR

NEWHEY/MILNROW

To remind you the new GMSF Plan states

that on this development site there is a plan

to deliver around 310,000sqm of “high quality,

adaptable employment floor space within a

green park setting”. Also to deliver “700 new

homes providing a mix of high quality housing,

including larger, higher value properties”.

Is this adhering to Andy Burnham’s three clear

principles? Is this what we need in Newhey/

Milnrow and how will this affect the infrastructure,

flooding issues and air quality in our

villages along with the destruction of our

countryside which encompasses the farming

industry, various wildlife and their habitats,

public footpaths and most importantly the

countryside which gives us a vital breathing

space between the towns of Rochdale and

Oldham for our communities to enjoy?

An added site to the GMSF Plan is Newhey

this is a brownfield site. However, there is still

police services will cope with the pressure of

the proposal of 250 houses being built on

this land.

Policy GM Allocation 3

Development of this site will be required to:

1. Be in accordance with the comprehensive

masterplan agreed by the local planning

authority.

2. Deliver around 310,000sqm of high quality,

a ‘green’ employment park setting., with a

Dementia Friendly Café

Bamford Chapel & Norden URC

Dementia Cafe A Great Success

We hoped our Dementia-friendly Café would be a place of love and laughter and so it

has turned out to be. Our 30 willing volunteers have ensured that!

At the first meeting almost 90 people attended including 9 councillors and dementia

professionals. In January there was a total of 53 and 2 doggy visitors, Doug and Teddy!

It has been most rewarding to see our guests content, relaxed and at ease. We have

welcomed several residents from residential homes who have greatly enjoyed their

outings. We are building relationships with the carers and the ‘cared for’ through our

volunteer ‘befrienders’.

Our ‘guest artists’ have been greatly appreciated. In December the choir from

St Michael’s entertained and included us in the singing and instrument playing!

In January, Brian Flood took us back to the ‘50s & ‘60s and we sang along heartily

with some brave souls even prepared to dance!

The feedback has been very encouraging: both in praising what we are

offering and giving excellent suggestions.

“Very enjoyable afternoon”

“Another lovely, friendly afternoon. You are all very kind and friendly.

I think you have got everything right”

“A very good welcome to a new group”

“Very nice chat and get-together”

THE NEXT SESSION IS FRIDAY 1ST FEBRUARY

We look forward to greeting old friends

and welcoming new people. We promise to maintain the love and laughter and the

amazing home-made refreshments.

May the loving friendships grow!
