Camp Birchwood’s countdown to confidence
Camp values that make
a difference
No. 10. Girls make their own
decisions
Camp engages girls in their
own decision-making process.
Yes, without mom or dad there,
it’s up to them to make their
schedule and live out their every
day. Sometimes they make mistakes,
but those gentle set-backs
show them they can persevere
and face more challenges in their
future.
No. 9. Girls do cool stuff
Studies indicate that girls tend
to base their self-worth on their
relationships rather than “hard
skills” or actual accomplishments.
At Birchwood, girls get
off the roller coaster of “what others
think” and start doing. What
they gain is a kind of “know how”
no one can ever take away.
No. 8. Girls gain those
indispensable “soft skills”
Unlike hard skills that are based
on the ability to perform a task,
soft skills relate to how well you
conduct yourself within a group.
At Birchwood, girls develop
crucial soft skills living in a cabin
of 10-12 their peers. In doing
so, they learn to share, use good
manners, listen well, speak with
respect, tolerate differences and
come together as a team to accomplish
goals.
BOYS
& GIRLS
AGES 3-12
No. 7. An all-female setting is
all-special
Our all-female setting minimizes
distractions and invites
girls to communicate openly and
authentically. There’s no competition
about appearance, or status,
or popularity. Girls can let go of
“who they think they should be to
impress others” and focus instead
- on who they truly are - unique,
valuable and worthwhile individuals
capable of greatness.
No. 6. At Birchwood, girls stop,
look, listen and reflect
At Birchwood, our counselors
incorporate intentional learning
moments into every day. Girls
are asked to reflect on their efforts
(big or small) so they can
appreciate their own progress
(rather than compare it to others).
Crystallizing their growth turns
the simplest moment into an epic
confidence booster.
No. 5. Social media takes a back
seat to soulful socializing
At Birchwood, all the gadgets
are put away. Girls focus on what
is happening in the moment. Life
is not measured by selfies. It is
measured by shared laughs, outdoor
adventures, meaningful conversations,
challenges overcome
and real connections made with
friends in real time.
No. 4. Time in the outdoors is the
best time of all
At Birchwood, girls depart the
blitz and chaos of modern life
and enter a space where they can
breathe fresh air, dive into cool
waters and sit with the earth. A
calm simplicity weaves itself
into their everyday experience.
Stresses dissipate. Their world
becomes smaller. More manageable.
Better. Happier. Healthier.
No. 3. Real role models who
make a real difference
Sometimes it takes someone
who isn’t your adoring parent to
motivate and inspire you as you
grow up.
At Birchwood, girls are surrounded
by female role models
worthy of emulation. These college-age
ladies empower girls to
celebrate their individuality, take
on brand new challenges, express
their opinions with respect and
appreciate uniqueness in others.
No. 2. Friends really are friends
forever
As girls share their most joyful,
honest self with one another,
a binding connection is made.
At Birchwood girls learn what
it feels like to live kindly and
respectfully with one another.
From start to finish, they are encouraged
to care for their own
self and for others. The kindred
connection that is built within this
setting lasts a lifetime.
No. 1. Resilience and strength is
learned
Whether sailing, camping,
shooting an arrow, or making art,
every day at Birchwood girls are
active, soulful participants in their
own lives. The live big. They
learn hands-on. And they stand
taller and prouder – and stronger -
when they go home because of it.
New this year, we are
offering half day camp options
for our most popular
camp, All Stars & Beyond.
Half day camps run from
9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and are
the perfect way to keep the
kids busy in the morning
and have afternoons free
for family picnics, beach
days or just enjoying the
lazy days of summer. Also
new is McCormick Extreme
Camp for grades 5
and 6.
Extreme Campers will
engage in many outdoor
activities including rock
climbing, canoeing and
more. If you have a young
artist interested in ceramics,
Youth Wheel Camp is
a creative, new option.
Traditional day camps
including Summer Discovery,
Everett Explorers and
All Stars (ages 3-12) are
offered from 1 week to 8
weeks, so you can customize
your camp schedule
to fit your summer plans.
McCormick Day Camp is
offered in a 6 week session,
with choices of 2, 3,
or 5 days per week. Many
of our camps offer weekly
trips to the beach and multiple
field trips throughout
the summer. To accommodate
working parents,
we have Extended Day
Camp at Deerpath Middle
School.
Our beloved Twigs
Camp features an emphasis
on art (including ceramics,
drawing and painting), theatre
and dance. Dance Me
a Story camps (ages 3-7)
will have your tiny dancer
twirling to the music of Adventures
in Neverland and
swishing their grass skirts
in Awesome Aloha. For
boys and girls, Break the
Beat Hip Hop Camp (ages
5-7) is high-energy and will
have your dancer movin’ to
the beat.
Wildlife camps are always
a favorite and the
Wildlife Discovery Center
is one of the best places for
kids to learn about animals
and nature as they study
and observe local wildlife
along the Middlefork
Savana. Daily interaction
with the WDC animals
provides children with the
opportunity to learn animal
handling basics and
much more.
This year, our sport-specific
camps include archery,
sailing, golf, lacrosse, soccer,
basketball, football,
gymnastics and volleyball.
We also offer S.T.E.M.
camps which include robotics,
Minecraft, 3D design
and printing, augmented reality
and more.
For older kids currently
in grades 7 through 10 this
year or 13 to 15 years old,
our popular Counselor in
Training (CIT) volunteer
program offers them the
opportunity to develop
leadership skills through
summer work experience.
The CIT information
packet and application is
available for pick up at the
Recreation Center or on
Gorton Community
Center summer camps
offer new experiences
Did you know there is
a robust array of summer
camps offered at Gorton
and they sell out fast? Being
the gathering place for
arts and culture, Gorton
lives up to its mission offering
everything from Safety
Town Camps to week-long
specialty camps ranging
from cooking to Mandarin
to robotics.
The week-long camps
run June through August
and cover a diverse array
of activities. Additionally,
they offer an entirely different
experience each week,
so your child can enroll in
as many camps in a certain
category as he or she would
like and the curriculum will
vary week to week, never
repeating, with the exception
of film. All camps are
taught by local professionals
and run 9 a.m.-noon and
1 p.m.-4 p.m. Patrons are
free to enroll in a morning
and afternoon camp, piecing
together a custom allday
camp of their choosing.
Many local residents
are familiar with Gorton’s
Safety Town Program, and
sit by their computers at
9:59 on sign-up day not
to miss the opportunity to
enroll their child. Modeled
after the nationally recognized
Safety Town Camp,
Gorton’s Safety Town Majors
(ages 5-7) has become
one of the best-run Safety
Town’s in the nation. With
full participation by the
City of Lake Forest’s Police
and Fire Departments,
certified teachers and local
professionals in areas ranging
from swim safety to pet
safety, this camp reaches
the gold standard for teaching
kids ages 5-8 how to
be safe in a fun, interactive
way. This camp has been so
successful the last six years
running, that Gorton created
a Safety Town II Camp
(called Commanders) for
the next level, ages 8-10.
This is one of the very
few Safety Town’s in the
country geared for this age
group. Safety Town Commanders
dives deep into
everything from gun safety
to cyber bullying to mindfulness.
Similar to Safety
Town Majors, this camp
is taught by a certified
teacher, community experts
ranging from the American
Red Cross to Lake Forest
Open Lands Association,
and of course, local police
and fire departments.
Safety Town Majors will
take place on June 11-14
this summer and Safety
Town Commanders camp
runs August 13-15.
Safety Town Deputy
camp is perfect for tiny
tots ages 2-5 and is taught
through the Drop In Learning
Center at Gorton. This
camp is an abbreviated
version of Safety Town
Majors, has participation
by the Lake Forest Police
and Fire departments, and
is a shorter day with gentle
introduction to the most basic
safety issues. This camp
runs August 5-9.
Registration for all
camps happens online on
Friday, March 15 at 10 a.m.
Camp Jorn’s everyday camp is an adventure
For more than 65 years,
Camp Jorn has provided
boys and girls the opportunity
to become part
of a special community
focused on character, values,
self-discovery and
independence. Camp Jorn
YMCA is situated on a
70+ acre peninsula in Wisconsin’s
Northwoods in
Manitowish Waters, WI.
Camp Jorn YMCA has
made a commitment to
ensure a positive and safe
camping experience for
each child who attends our
summer program. Our focus
on character development
helps youth to grow
in the areas of our four
core values – caring, honesty,
respect and responsibility.
Campers range from
ages 8-17. Camp Jorn offers
campers the opportunity
to stay for one week
or two weeks at a time.
At Camp Jorn, campers
will participate in three instructional
classes per day.
Other times are dedicated
to cabin activities. The
cabin group participates
in activities such as trail
rides, tubing, sailing, cabin
challenges, sports and
more. Evenings are a blast.
We have all-camp activities
such as campfires,
skits, games such as Wells
Fargo (think Capture the
Flag), Granny’s Candy,
Gold Rush and more. On
closing night we have our
Friendship Fire ceremony.
Teen programs include
TEVA (13-15 yr. olds) and
CIT (Counselor in Training
16+). TEVA offers
older campers increased
independence and responsibility,
with some familiarity
of traditional summer
camp. TEVA campers
reside in Camp Jorn’s Yurt
Village as a community.
TEVA campers spend part
of the day gaining leadership
skills through an
array of outdoor skills
lessons. Cabin activities
are focused on serviceleadership
and preparing
(training) for their wilderness
trip. Campers also
get the experience of outdoor
cooking in TEVA’s
own outdoor kitchen. Each
TEVA session includes the
opportunity to experience
a wilderness canoe or back
packing trip. TEVAs will
leave camp with a greater
sense of themselves and
skills to be a leader. CITs
will work closely with
members of the counseling
team and leadership staff
while going through training.
Their schedule will
consist of spending time
with our day camp and
resident camp programs
to gain group management
and youth development
skills through experiential
learning.
Camp Jorn does provide
scholarships to campers as
we never want anyone to
miss out on camp.
You won’t want to miss
out on a summer at Camp
Jorn.
Chicago’s premier art
school, the School of the
Art Institute of Chicago
(SAIC), offers amazing
course options for all
ages. Nurturing creative
potential is at the center of
preparing children for life.
SAIC offers classes yearround,
taking advantage
of all Chicago has to offer,
allowing creative thinkers
and makers to explore their
passions. Children learn to
explore, imagine and discover
while we guide them
on a path to becoming creators,
innovators and problem-solvers
of the future.
Children’s Workshops
are offered both morning
and afternoons for one- or
two-week sessions each
summer for children ages
4-9. SAIC’s unique environment
allows children to
work together on fun projects
and create art through
painting, drawing, mixed
media, sculpture, printmaking,
performance, digital
art and more. Courses
start in different sessions
beginning June 10 through
August 16, to meet any
budding artist’s schedule.
And for campers over age
6, you can sign up for back
to back morning and afternoon
sessions to make
it a full day. We even offer
Family Camps, for the
whole family to join in.
Middle School Programs
are offered year
round for children ages 10-
13. Our summer programs
offer incredibly immersive
experiences across a variety
of disciplines. Oneand
two- week courses
include:
• Architecture
• Animation
• Comics and graphic novels
• Designed inventions
• Fashion
• Illustration
• Painting and drawing
• Sculpture
• Toy design
• Video game design
And, if that is not
enough, our young creators
have the added benefit
of expanding their creative
potential through:
• A 1:8 teacher to child
ratio, with the most accomplished
art faculty
imaginable
• Projects that integrate
meaning and making – a
hallmark of our curriculum
• Access to SAIC’s stateof-the-art
classroom and
studio facilities
• And, regular visits to our
museum, The Art Institute
