licentiousness, inasmuch as <strong>the</strong> faith th<strong>at</strong> takes hold<br />
of righteousness for justific<strong>at</strong>ion, oper<strong>at</strong>es in <strong>the</strong><br />
heart <strong>to</strong> its renewal, and a renewed heart is <strong>the</strong><br />
fountain of every holy virtue and of every good<br />
work.<br />
It was now, <strong>to</strong>o, th<strong>at</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>r published his<br />
famous appeal <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> emperor, <strong>the</strong> princes, and <strong>the</strong><br />
people of <strong>Germany</strong>, on <strong>the</strong> Reform<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />
Christianity. This was <strong>the</strong> most graphic,<br />
courageous, eloquent, and spirit-stirring production<br />
which had yet issued <strong>from</strong> his pen. It may be truly<br />
said of it th<strong>at</strong> its words were b<strong>at</strong>tles. The sens<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
it produced was immense. It was <strong>the</strong> trumpet th<strong>at</strong><br />
summoned <strong>the</strong> German n<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> gre<strong>at</strong> conflict.<br />
"The time for silence," said Lu<strong>the</strong>r, "is past,<br />
and <strong>the</strong> time <strong>to</strong> speak is come." And verily he did<br />
speak.<br />
