We would like to welcome you to ACE’s European CEO Conference 2010.<br />

This is the first European CEO conference that ACE has held. Its aim is to bring<br />

together leading industry figures to discuss the key strategic issues facing your<br />

business <strong>and</strong> your sector.<br />

The conference is part of ACE’s benchmarking programme. The conference<br />

Andrej Avelini, efcg<br />

Andrej has been with the firm since 1996 <strong>and</strong> has advised<br />

on over 70 completed merger <strong>and</strong> acquisition transactions,<br />

as well as numerous valuation, peer benchmarking analysis<br />

<strong>and</strong> strategic consulting assignments in the sector. He has<br />

presented to the board of directors or senior management<br />

teams of over 100 firms <strong>and</strong> has addressed several industry<br />

conferences. Andrej was <strong>for</strong>merly with Salomon Brothers, Inc.,<br />

a major Wall Street investment banking firm, where he worked<br />

in the telecommunications group on mergers <strong>and</strong> acquisitions<br />

<strong>and</strong> capital raising. He holds an MBA from Columbia Business<br />

School <strong>and</strong> a BBA summa cum laude degree from Freed-<br />

Hardeman University.<br />

Bruce Ainsworth, Black & Veatch<br />

Bruce is managing director <strong>for</strong> Black & Veatch Group Ltd.<br />

Bruce is the executive managing director <strong>for</strong> the strategic<br />

business development of the water business, with primary<br />

responsibility to drive growth. During 2008 <strong>and</strong> 2009, Bruce<br />

served as executive managing director <strong>for</strong> all water regions,<br />

responsible <strong>for</strong> sales <strong>and</strong> services to water business clients<br />

around the globe. Beginning in 2005, Bruce was assigned<br />

to the UK as managing director of the Europe region of the<br />

water business where design <strong>and</strong> build is the predominant<br />

<strong>for</strong>m of project delivery. The Europe region encompassed<br />

Europe, Middle East, Africa <strong>and</strong> India. In 2006 he led both<br />

the acquisition <strong>and</strong> integration of a civil contractor, the largest<br />

acquisition ever made by B&V by doubling the staff count <strong>and</strong><br />

revenue in the UK. From 2002 to 2005 Bruce was director of<br />

the design <strong>and</strong> build business <strong>for</strong> Water Americas. Prior to<br />

2002 he was head of hydraulic structures <strong>and</strong> heavy civil. From<br />

1978 to 1999 Bruce served in the energy business moving<br />

from lead civil engineer to principal in charge. Prior to 1978<br />

Bruce worked as a civil engineer in the B&V federal division<br />

serving the US government. Bruce’s design-build project<br />

delivery experience includes water resources, hydropower<br />

engineering <strong>and</strong> water <strong>and</strong> wastewater treatment.


Rikard Appelgren, WSP<br />

Rikard is managing director of WSP Sweden <strong>and</strong> WSP Europe,<br />

<strong>and</strong> is executive director of WSP plc board. Having worked<br />

as an engineering consultant <strong>and</strong> contractor in Sweden <strong>and</strong><br />

Germany <strong>for</strong> 8 years he joined WSP Sweden in 1996.<br />

Kurt Birkenmeier, gauff JBg Ingenieure<br />

Kurt graduated from the Technical University of Braunschweig<br />

<strong>for</strong> Civil <strong>Engineering</strong> in 1979. He has 30 years of professional<br />

experience in the fields of hydraulic <strong>and</strong> structural engineering<br />

as well as cost estimate <strong>and</strong> cost control, part of which<br />

was gained abroad. Kurt is extensively experienced in the<br />

management of large projects <strong>and</strong> large companies of up to<br />

500 employees through his work in internationally successful<br />

companies over 30 years, <strong>and</strong> in senior positions <strong>for</strong> almost<br />

20 years. He has worked in Germany, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia,<br />

United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Ug<strong>and</strong>a, Tanzania, China <strong>and</strong><br />

Egypt.<br />

Hugh Blackwood, URS Scott Wilson<br />

Hugh joined Scott Wilson in 1971 <strong>and</strong> developed his career<br />

as a civil engineer in the road <strong>and</strong> railway sectors. He was<br />

made a partner in the business in 1989. In 1995 Hugh led<br />

the acquisition of the <strong>for</strong>mer British Rail engineering offices<br />

in Swindon <strong>and</strong> Glasgow <strong>and</strong> took on the role of chief<br />

executive officer of the UK railways division. In May 2005<br />

Hugh was appointed joint chief executive of the Scott Wilson<br />

Group charged with the continued successful growth of the<br />

international <strong>and</strong> UK railways divisions. In May 2008 Hugh<br />

became group chief executive. Following the acquisition of the<br />

company by URS Corporation in September 2010, Hugh was<br />

appointed to the position of senior vice president, international<br />

operations as well as vice president of URS Corporation.<br />

les Buck, Halcrow<br />

Les was appointed as a main board director in May 1998. He<br />

is now group board director <strong>for</strong> technical development <strong>and</strong><br />

delivery. Between 2003 <strong>and</strong> 2007 he led the development of<br />

Halcrow’s North American business, which grew to over 500<br />

staff during that time. Prior to moving to the USA, he was<br />

the managing director of the transportation business group<br />

between 2001 <strong>and</strong> 2003. He has over 35 years experience<br />

as a civil engineer in the design <strong>and</strong> construction of maritime,<br />

flood defence, power, highway, rail <strong>and</strong> airport projects. He<br />

is chairman of the risk sub-committee <strong>and</strong> a trustee of the<br />

Halcrow Trust.<br />

Pablo Bueno, TYPSA<br />

Pablo graduated with an MSc in civil engineering in 1987<br />

<strong>and</strong> later gained an MBA at IESE Business School in<br />

Madrid. He began his career at TYPSA, a Spanish firm of<br />

consulting engineers <strong>and</strong> architects, at first as an engineer<br />

working on designs <strong>and</strong> construction supervision, <strong>and</strong> later<br />

in a management role. He launched the ports <strong>and</strong> coasts<br />

department at TYPSA, as well as spending four years in<br />

Saudi Arabia where he managed construction supervision<br />

<strong>and</strong> buildings. His international experience also includes a<br />

year with a British engineering firm in the UK. He has ample<br />

experience in dealing with clients from all over the world <strong>and</strong> in<br />

supervising <strong>and</strong> organising highly specialised multi-disciplinary<br />

teams in all fields of engineering. Pablo became managing<br />

director of TYPSA <strong>and</strong> is now the CEO. TYPSA has 1,880<br />

employees working in the fields of civil engineering, buildings,<br />

water <strong>and</strong> the environment, in more than 20 offices in Spain,<br />

Europe, USA, Latin America, Africa <strong>and</strong> the Middle East. He<br />

is a Member of the Spanish Institution of Civil Engineers <strong>and</strong><br />

executive member of the Spanish Tunneling <strong>Association</strong>. He<br />

was vice president of the European Federation of Consulting<br />

Engineers (EFCA) <strong>for</strong> 5 years <strong>and</strong> is currently on the executive<br />

committee of FIDIC.


gordon clark, gif<strong>for</strong>d<br />

Gordon graduated in civil engineering from Imperial College<br />

London. He is chairman of consulting engineers Gif<strong>for</strong>d, where<br />

he has been since 1976 <strong>and</strong> through his career specialised<br />

mainly in bridge design. He was project director <strong>for</strong> Gif<strong>for</strong>d<br />

<strong>for</strong> the award-winning Gateshead Millennium Bridge which<br />

has become an icon around the world. He has seen Gif<strong>for</strong>d<br />

grow from around 60 staff <strong>and</strong> he joined the management<br />

when Gif<strong>for</strong>d had around 150 staff, then growing to almost<br />

900 purely organically, be<strong>for</strong>e the economic downturn started<br />

in 2008. He has experienced the stresses of growth <strong>and</strong><br />

recession on business <strong>and</strong> how management needs to adapt<br />

its style, processes <strong>and</strong> systems in support.<br />

chris cole, WSP<br />

Chris is the chief executive of the publicly-quoted company,<br />

WSP Group plc, one of the largest international consultancy<br />

groups in the world employing around 9,000 staff worldwide.<br />

Chris joined WSP at its inception in the 1970s, took the<br />

company public in 1987 <strong>and</strong>, as well as being CEO, chairs the<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance <strong>and</strong> strategy boards. In addition, Chris is nonexecutive<br />

chairman of Ashtead Group plc.<br />

Ken dalton, Aecom<br />

Ken is chief executive, Europe, <strong>and</strong> is a member of the<br />

AECOM operations board. He is also a member of the AECOM<br />

Europe compliance committee <strong>and</strong> the pensions <strong>and</strong> global<br />

stock plan committee. The company has been recognised in<br />

the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Financial Times Best Workplaces over a number of years. The<br />

company is a foundation member of Tomorrow’s Co., which<br />

promotes relationships with all stakeholders <strong>and</strong> is proactive<br />

in implementing the EFQM Excellence model to deliver<br />

continuous improvement. Ken has more than 39 years of<br />

professional consulting engineering experience.<br />

david dryden, cundall<br />

David was appointed as Cundall’s managing partner in June<br />

2002. He has led the organic development of Cundall from<br />

a UK practice with three offices to its current position as<br />

a leading international consultancy with 17 offices in eight<br />

countries. This expansion was most recently recognised at the<br />

2009 Building Services Awards where Cundall was awarded<br />

the international achievement award. David joined Cundall in<br />

1983 from a contracting background. He became a partner in<br />

1989. He has over 30 years experience across a wide scope<br />

of projects, ranging from corporate HQs <strong>and</strong> government<br />

buildings to mixed-use developments. David’s particular areas<br />

of expertise include critical electrical power systems <strong>and</strong><br />

power electronics systems, <strong>and</strong> he has worked on a number<br />

of data centres <strong>and</strong> flagship projects including BA Waterside,<br />

Wellcome Trust headquarters in London <strong>and</strong> the Ministry of<br />

Justice’s, refurbishment of 50 Queen Anne’s Gate, London<br />

gavin english, WSP<br />

Gavin is a chartered civil engineer with over 24 years worldwide<br />

experience in engineering <strong>and</strong> management. After graduating<br />

from Manchester University in 1982, he joined Cumbria County<br />

Council as a graduate engineer. Gavin joined the Graham<br />

Consulting Group as a senior engineer in 1990 where he began his<br />

international career working on the design of major infrastructure<br />

projects. In 1997 WSP Group acquired Graham Group <strong>and</strong> Gavin<br />

joined the newly <strong>for</strong>med WSP International Business. He became<br />

managing director of WSP International Management Consulting in<br />

2001. Gavin is also chair of ACE’s International Business Group.<br />

Roger flanagan, University of Reading<br />

Roger is professor of construction management, School of<br />

Construction Management <strong>and</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong>, University of<br />

Reading. He has served on the board of directors of Skanska<br />

AB, Halcrow Group, <strong>and</strong> companies in USA, Switzerl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

Hong Kong, <strong>and</strong> South Africa. Roger is also a member of<br />

ACE’s advisory board.

Nick is the managing director of the Europe, Middle East <strong>and</strong><br />

North Africa region <strong>for</strong> Parsons Brinckerhoff, responsible <strong>for</strong><br />

around 3,000 staff in more than 15 countries. Nick joined PB<br />

from Balfour Beatty Management following the acquisition by<br />

Balfour Beatty in October 2009. A chartered engineer (MICE,<br />

MCIWEM), he has spent most of his career in consultancy, with<br />

over 10 years spent on international business in the Far East,<br />

Europe, <strong>and</strong> Middle East. He joined Balfour Beatty in 2003 <strong>and</strong><br />

has been closely involved with vertically integrated services<br />

through delivery alliance arrangements in the gas, water,<br />

electricity <strong>and</strong> airports sectors, primarily in the UK but also in<br />

the USA.<br />

S<strong>and</strong>y fraser, Brewin dolphin<br />

S<strong>and</strong>y is a managing director of corporate finance with Brewin<br />

Dolphin Limited <strong>and</strong> has almost 30 years of corporate advisory<br />

experience, including particular expertise in mergers <strong>and</strong><br />

acquisitions, both public <strong>and</strong> private. He joined Phillips & Drew<br />

in 1982 <strong>and</strong> was appointed a director of what was then UBS<br />

Phillips & Drew Securities in 1988. He then joined Guinness<br />

Mahon in 1992 <strong>and</strong> spent almost 10 years as a director, both<br />

be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>and</strong> after its acquisition by Investec Bank. He has spent<br />

the last eight years in Brewin Dolphin’s Corporate Finance<br />

Division during which time his transaction experience has<br />

included advising on: ECM transactions <strong>for</strong> Hyder Consulting;<br />

lead-managing the IPO of Scott Wilson Group in 2006; <strong>and</strong><br />

acting as joint adviser to Scott Wilson on the recommended<br />

offer by URS Corporation earlier this year.<br />

geoff french, URS Scott Wilson<br />

Geoff was Chairman of Scott Wilson <strong>for</strong> eight years until its<br />

recent acquisition by URS. He is a civil engineering graduate<br />

who joined Scott Wilson in 1968. Following the transition from<br />

partnership to limited company in 1995 he was appointed to<br />

managing director, initially of the business in the UK. He has<br />

overseen the growth of the Scott Wilson business both in the<br />

UK <strong>and</strong> the major international business centres around the<br />

world, ensuring the group’s continued position in the top ten<br />

engineering consultancies. He was appointed chairman in<br />

2002, since when the group’s revenue has more than tripled,<br />

<strong>and</strong> he oversaw the highly successful flotation in March 2006.<br />

In 2008 he became non executive chairman of the group. In<br />

2005 he was elected to the executive committee of FIDIC, the<br />

International Federation of Consulting Engineers <strong>and</strong> became<br />

vice president in 2009. He is also a past chairman of ACE in<br />

the UK. He became a vice president of the Institution of Civil<br />

Engineers in November 2008.<br />

Peter gammie, Halcrow<br />

Peter has been with Halcrow <strong>for</strong> 32 years, 20 of which as a<br />

board director, <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> the last eight has been chief executive.<br />

Halcrow is a design <strong>and</strong> planning consultant, operating in<br />

the field of civil <strong>and</strong> structural engineering. Halcrow is a top<br />

five player in most of its chosen markets <strong>and</strong> ‘number one’<br />

in several. Its reputation <strong>for</strong> the design <strong>and</strong> delivery of major<br />

projects has been extended over the past few years through<br />

successful commissions such as High Speed 1, The Gr<strong>and</strong><br />

Mosque in Abu Dhabi <strong>and</strong> the St Petersburg Navigation <strong>and</strong><br />

Flood Protection Barrier. Beyond Halcrow, Peter regularly<br />

engages in industry events <strong>and</strong> is an active member of<br />

ACE. He is a regular speaker <strong>and</strong> panellist at seminars <strong>and</strong><br />

conferences, both in the UK <strong>and</strong> internationally. He has<br />

chaired CIRIA since 2007.<br />

Jonathan goring, capita Symonds<br />

Jonathan Goring runs the 4,000 person business of<br />

Capita Symonds. His project career spans the Broadgate<br />

Development, British Airways’ World Cargo Centre at<br />

Heathrow Airport, <strong>and</strong> latterly strategic advice on Wembley<br />

Stadium, The Shard of Glass, Twickenham South St<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

London 2012 Olympics <strong>and</strong> Paralympic Games. Jonathan’s<br />

business experience has led him through the management<br />

buyout of Symonds Group in 2000, to the acquisition of


Symonds by Capita in 2004, to one of the five executive<br />

directors on Capita Symonds’ executive board to his present<br />

position as managing director of Capita Symonds. Those who<br />

know him would say his key strength is to be able to persuade<br />

people to do things they don’t know they should be doing!<br />

Keith Howells, mott macdonald<br />

Keith graduated in civil engineering in 1974 <strong>and</strong> joined one<br />

of the founder companies of Mott MacDonald in 1975. He<br />

spent the first 10 years of his career in infrastructure design<br />

<strong>and</strong> project management, mostly in the water <strong>and</strong> transport<br />

sectors, including two years supervising construction in Iraq<br />

<strong>and</strong> two years managing procurement <strong>and</strong> contracts in Kenya.<br />

He studied <strong>for</strong> an MBA at Cranfield in 1985/6, following which<br />

he undertook a number of master planning <strong>and</strong> feasibility<br />

studies in the infrastructure <strong>and</strong> urban environment sectors in<br />

China, Hong Kong, India, Russia, Egypt <strong>and</strong> southern Africa,<br />

as well as being project director <strong>for</strong> a number of UK water<br />

sector projects. In 1998 he became managing director of<br />

the group’s water <strong>and</strong> environment business, <strong>and</strong> became a<br />

member of the group board in 2002. In 2004 he was made<br />

group managing director, responsible <strong>for</strong> world-wide business<br />

operations. Keith is also a member of the Cranfield School of<br />

Management advisory board <strong>and</strong> was recently selected to be<br />

the chair of the ACE’s large consultancy group.<br />

lawrence Hughes, grontmij<br />

Lawrence has proactively driven Grontmij’s expansion in<br />

the UK <strong>and</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong> since joining the company as managing<br />

director in 2002. He provides strategic direction to the<br />

consultancy which offers the full spectrum of engineering<br />

<strong>and</strong> environmental solutions across the built <strong>and</strong> natural<br />

environment. This includes work in the water industry, the UK<br />

<strong>and</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong>’s national <strong>and</strong> local road network, environmental<br />

telemetry systems. In January 2010, Lawrence was appointed<br />

professionals <strong>and</strong> a turnover of over €£1bn (2009). In his current<br />

role, Lawrence is responsible <strong>for</strong> the per<strong>for</strong>mance of the water<br />

<strong>and</strong> energy business across all eight main countries of the<br />

group. He is also in charge of leading the cross-fertilisation of<br />

market opportunities with international expertise. Lawrence is<br />

vice chairman of ACE where he oversees the organisation’s<br />

strategy of engagement in public affairs. Lawrence has been<br />

a board member of the ACE <strong>for</strong> three years during which<br />

time he has overseen Grontmij’s wider involvement with the<br />

organisation. With over 30 years engineering experience<br />

gained internationally, Lawrence has held senior positions at<br />

various consultancies in the UK <strong>and</strong> overseas. He is a MICE,<br />

chartered engineer <strong>and</strong> a registered professional engineer in<br />

the State of Texas.<br />

dr. Bernd Kordes, lahmeyer<br />

Bernd is President <strong>and</strong> CEO of Lahmeyer International. Bernd<br />

is a civil engineer with a MSc <strong>and</strong> PhD from the University<br />

of Karlsruhe, Germany. He has 24 years of experience in<br />

consulting engineering with GKW Group, Germany from 1986<br />

to 1989, WCI Umwelttechnik GmbH, Germany, subsidiary of<br />

Woodward Clyde (today URS) from 1989 to 1993 as managing<br />

director. After rejoining GKW Group in 1993 he became<br />

managing director <strong>and</strong> CEO in 1996. In 2005 GKW group was<br />

acquired by Pöyry, Finl<strong>and</strong>. After the successful integration of<br />

GKW into Pöyry, Bernd became responsible <strong>for</strong> the water <strong>and</strong><br />

enviroment business sector segment ‘water <strong>and</strong> environment’<br />

globally <strong>and</strong> member of the group executive committee<br />

until 2010. Bernd was a member of FIDIC Environmental<br />

Committee from 1991 – 2000. From 2007 – 2010 he was<br />

a member of the EFCA board of directors. He is chairing<br />

the international committee of VBI, the German Consulting<br />

<strong>Engineering</strong> <strong>Association</strong>, since 2006.


christian listov-Saabye, moe & Brødsgaard<br />

Christian is a master of science in civil engineering <strong>and</strong><br />

has been with Moe & Brødsgaard A/S since 1983. He was<br />

appointed CEO in 2002 <strong>and</strong> has been in charge of Moe &<br />

Brødsgaard’s rapid growth, ensuring the company a solid<br />

position in the top ten engineering consultancies in Denmark.<br />

Since 2002 the turnover of Moe & Brødsgaard has more than<br />

doubled <strong>and</strong> the profit more than tripled. The group has grown<br />

from one office in Copenhagen to now five offices in Denmark<br />

<strong>and</strong> also a subsidiary in Norway. In 2005 he was elected<br />

chairman of the board of GEO, the Danish Geotechnical<br />

Institute, after being vice chairman of the board of GEO since<br />

2002. In 2007 he was elected chairman of the board of the<br />

Danish Building In<strong>for</strong>mation Centre. In 2008 he was elected<br />

executive member of DI, the Confederation of Danish Industry.<br />

Jorge Unda malcorra, SeNeR<br />

Jorge joined the Superior <strong>Engineering</strong> School of Bilbao,<br />

University of the Basque Country in 1980. He has a PhD<br />

in ‘computational analysis of the kinematic <strong>and</strong> dynamic<br />

problems in planar mechanisms’.<br />

charles mcBeath, Ramboll<br />

Charles joined Ramboll in 1993 <strong>and</strong> was appointed partner<br />

in 1998, director in 2000 <strong>and</strong> director with joint responsibility<br />

<strong>for</strong> all structural <strong>and</strong> civil engineering groups in 2006. Charles<br />

is Ramboll’s first UK managing director. He leads the drive<br />

<strong>for</strong> quality across the UK business, strengthening their<br />

multidisciplinary resources <strong>for</strong> their clients. He works to ensure<br />

the UK operation optimises its position within the Ramboll global<br />

network, contributing technical knowledge <strong>and</strong> sharing expertise<br />

with clients on a local level. In this, he is keenly aware of the<br />

Pat mcgrath, Pm group<br />

Pat is CEO of the Irel<strong>and</strong>-headquartered PM Group, which<br />

employs over 1,700 personnel in Irel<strong>and</strong>, UK, Belgium,<br />

Sweden, France, Pol<strong>and</strong>, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria,<br />

Singapore, India, China, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia <strong>and</strong> the USA.<br />

Devereux Architects, London, <strong>and</strong> PM Greene Engineers,<br />

San Jose, are PM Group companies. PM Group provides<br />

project management, architectural/engineering design <strong>and</strong><br />

sectors, with a particular focus on the biopharmaceutical,<br />

Stuart mclachlan, WSP<br />

Stuart qualified as an environmental scientist be<strong>for</strong>e joining<br />

John Laing plc where he completed his postgraduate MSc<br />

in Environmental Pollution Science. In 1995 he joined WSP<br />

Group plc to develop a business plan <strong>for</strong> their environmental<br />

consulting business, which he then took a leadership<br />

role in. In 1997 he was made managing director of WSP<br />

environment <strong>and</strong> energy. Having established one of the leading<br />

environmental consultancies in the UK, Stuart embarked on a<br />

strategy to develop the business into one of the sector-leading<br />

consultancies globally. In addition to his commitment to WSP<br />

environment <strong>and</strong> energy, Stuart also has a broader role, <strong>and</strong> in<br />

2006 was appointed to WSP Group’s plc board where one of<br />

his duties is to lead the sustainability strategy <strong>for</strong> the company.


He is also an active member of the steering committee <strong>for</strong> the<br />

‘Leadership Skills <strong>for</strong> a Sustainable Future’ project led by EDF,<br />

<strong>and</strong> he sits on the May Day Network leadership team, which is<br />

part of BiTC. He currently chairs the Sustainable Future Vision<br />

graham Nicholson, Tony gee <strong>and</strong> Partners<br />

Graham is the executive managing director of Tony Gee <strong>and</strong><br />

Partners <strong>and</strong> is chairman of the executive board responsible<br />

<strong>for</strong> the strategic development <strong>and</strong> growth of the business.<br />

Graham has been responsible <strong>for</strong> the detailed design of<br />

a variety of bridges <strong>and</strong> other structures in the UK <strong>and</strong><br />

South East Asia. Despite his current responsibilities <strong>for</strong> the<br />

development of Tony Gee <strong>and</strong> Partners he keeps a ‘h<strong>and</strong>s<br />

on’ approach to design. He started his career working <strong>for</strong> a<br />

contractor <strong>and</strong> quickly realised the need <strong>for</strong> better design. At<br />

Tony Gee <strong>and</strong> Partners he has assisted contractors with their<br />

temporary works requirements to build bridges designed by<br />

others. He has been responsible <strong>for</strong> the design in the UK of the<br />

Dornoch Firth Bridge, Ceiriog Viaduct, A20 Roundhill Viaducts<br />

<strong>and</strong> in Hong Kong many of the bridges comprising Rambler<br />

Channel Route 9 together with many Airport Rail Link viaducts.<br />

Other designs of note include Waterloo International Terminal<br />

<strong>and</strong> the foundation <strong>and</strong> river protection works <strong>for</strong> the London<br />

Eye. He has recently been the technical director responsible<br />

<strong>for</strong> the independent certification of the Taiwan High Speed Rail<br />

infrastructure which includes over 250km of elevated bridge<br />

structures <strong>and</strong> 45km of tunnels. Graham is a currently vice<br />

chairman <strong>and</strong> treasurer of ACE.<br />

Andy milner, Amey<br />

Andy is managing director of Amey’s consulting business.<br />

He joined the company in 2006 following the acquisition of<br />

Owen Williams, where he worked <strong>for</strong> ten years. Andy has<br />

been integral in driving the integration of Amey’s consultancy<br />

function within the company. This market-leading strategy has<br />

been realised through major contract wins across the business.<br />

Key successes include the award of Network Rail’s CEFA<br />

contract across all five areas, becoming the largest supplier of<br />

technology services to the Highways Agency, <strong>and</strong> winning both<br />

the HA’s MAC Area 9 <strong>and</strong> the £2.7bn Birmingham Highways<br />

PFI as a sole provider. Andy is a chartered engineer <strong>and</strong> has<br />

a background in major projects, particularly major bridge<br />

construction <strong>and</strong> strengthening projects. He was responsible<br />

<strong>for</strong> the M1 Tinsley viaduct strengthening (BCIA Major<br />

Project Winner 2005), the M6 Toll road, <strong>and</strong> a range of other<br />

major projects in the UK <strong>and</strong> overseas. Andy has extensive<br />

experience of asset management in the rail, highways <strong>and</strong><br />

property sectors. He has focused the business on maximising<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance of assets to suit client requirements.<br />

Harrie l.J. Noy, ARcAdIS<br />

Harrie is chief executive officer of ARCADIS NV <strong>and</strong> has been<br />

in that position since mid 2000. He has over 30 years of<br />

experience in the consulting engineering industry. An engineer<br />

by education, he started with ARCADIS in 1975, first as a<br />

project engineer <strong>and</strong> since 1985 in several management<br />

positions. He became managing director of ARCADIS’s Dutch<br />

consulting <strong>and</strong> engineering operations in 1990. In 1994,<br />

he was appointed member of the executive board <strong>and</strong> in<br />

2000 he assumed his current position. Harrie is also a board<br />

member of the association of Dutch stock listed companies,<br />

of the supervisory board of NV Nederl<strong>and</strong>se Gas Unie, of the<br />

advisory board of the Euronext stock exchange, <strong>and</strong> chairman<br />

of the supervisory board of the College of Arnhem – Nijmegen.


Nelson ogunshakin oBe, Ace<br />

Nelson is the chief executive of ACE <strong>and</strong> over the past five<br />

years has been responsible <strong>for</strong> the repositioning <strong>and</strong> strategic<br />

turnaround of the organisation. Nelson has extensive UK <strong>and</strong><br />

international experience including Africa, the Middle East,<br />

Asia, Europe <strong>and</strong> North America within the construction <strong>and</strong><br />

infrastructure development sectors. He has been involved<br />

in project development, procurement (EPC / D&B / BOOT /<br />

DBFO/ PFI /PPP) delivery, financial management, technical <strong>and</strong><br />

financial advisory, corporate restructuring, investment planning<br />

<strong>and</strong> corporate development. Nelson is also a member of the<br />

Institution of Civil Engineers UK, a non-executive board director<br />

of Thomas Tel<strong>for</strong>d Ltd, <strong>Engineering</strong> UK, a council member<br />

of Institution of Civil Engineers <strong>and</strong> Chairman of AEO Group,<br />

UK. He is also a visiting professor at Imperial Business School<br />

flemming Pedersen, Ramboll<br />

Flemming has a PhD in structural dynamics. He has been the<br />

president <strong>and</strong> group CEO of Ramboll since 1992. Flemming<br />

joined the company in 1976 <strong>and</strong> became a member of its<br />

management team in 1983. As group CEO he has been<br />

deeply engaged in all aspects of general management,<br />

developing strategies <strong>and</strong> models <strong>for</strong> business leadership<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> acquisition <strong>and</strong> mergers of domestic <strong>and</strong> international<br />

consulting companies. He has also developed Ramboll’s valuebased<br />

concepts of holistic operation <strong>and</strong> holistic accounting.<br />

He has been member of the FIDIC Executive Committee<br />

(2004-2008), <strong>and</strong> since 2009 Flemming has been a member of<br />

Danish Industry’s permanent committee on business policies.<br />

Tushar Prabhu, Pell frischmann<br />

Tushar is the development director <strong>and</strong> member of the main<br />

board of Pell Frischmann, the largest family-owned consulting<br />

engineering group in the UK with over 1,000 staff worldwide.<br />

His responsibilities include corporate strategy development<br />

<strong>and</strong> leadership of the UK, UAE <strong>and</strong> Indian management teams.<br />

He was appointed to his current position in 2002, having<br />

previously been director of operations in India. The focus of the<br />

company is to maintain its 84-year tradition of serving highquality<br />

clients in the UK while exp<strong>and</strong>ing its presence in the<br />

Middle East <strong>and</strong> India. Tushar is a graduate of civil engineering<br />

from the University of Cambridge <strong>and</strong> holds a Master’s degree<br />

in city <strong>and</strong> regional planning from Harvard University. He is a<br />

Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers <strong>and</strong> a Fellow of the<br />

Royal Geographical Society. His extensive experience covers<br />

business <strong>and</strong> operations management, as well as consulting<br />

expertise in property <strong>and</strong> infrastructure development projects.<br />

Prior to joining Pell Frischmann, Tushar worked in the US with<br />

the New York City Public Utility Service <strong>and</strong> the Electric Power<br />

Research Institute.


Henry Rowe, Royal Haskoning<br />

Henry’s career began in 1974 as an assistant engineer with<br />

Halcrow. He later moved to Pos<strong>for</strong>d Duvivier, <strong>and</strong> his career<br />

has taken him around the world, working on such projects<br />

as the Western Harbour Development Study in Hong Kong<br />

<strong>and</strong> the Port of Jeddah Container Terminal. In 1999 Henry<br />

was appointed maritime director of Pos<strong>for</strong>d Haskoning, later<br />

Royal Haskoning, where he took overall responsibility <strong>for</strong><br />

the work of the division, a vast array of maritime projects<br />

including Massawa Port Master Plan, Eritrea, Duqm Port,<br />

Oman, <strong>and</strong> Cai Lan Port Development in Vietnam. In January<br />

2008 he accepted a position on the Royal Haskoning board<br />

of management. His activities include board responsibility<br />

<strong>for</strong> the Divisions Maritime, Coastal <strong>and</strong> Rivers, Water <strong>and</strong><br />

Environment as well as the Corporate Support Groups ICT,<br />

QMS <strong>and</strong> Marketing <strong>and</strong> Communications. Henry attended<br />

the University of Central London; in 1974 he acquired a BSc<br />

in engineering. He has over 37 years professional experience<br />

including a total of 12 years spent overseas. He has<br />

specialised in the planning <strong>and</strong> design of ports <strong>and</strong> waterways,<br />

covering port master planning, port <strong>and</strong> berth layout planning,<br />

port operations <strong>and</strong> cargo h<strong>and</strong>ling.<br />

Kevin Rudden, Thomas garl<strong>and</strong> & Partners<br />

Kevin has almost twenty years experience as a civil <strong>and</strong><br />

structural engineer. He is a chartered engineer, a registered<br />

consulting engineer <strong>and</strong> a member of the <strong>Association</strong> of<br />

Consulting Engineers of Irel<strong>and</strong>. He was made director<br />

of Thomas Garl<strong>and</strong> & Partners in October 1999. He has<br />

experience of planning, design, project management,<br />

coordination <strong>and</strong> supervision in the construction of a range<br />

of large civil <strong>and</strong> structural engineering projects <strong>and</strong> has<br />

extensive experience of the day-to-day management of<br />

building <strong>and</strong> civil engineering projects. Kevin has been an<br />

executive member of the <strong>Association</strong> of Consulting Engineers<br />

of <strong>Engineering</strong> <strong>Consultancy</strong> <strong>Association</strong>s on the European<br />

Construction Safety Forum. Presently, Kevin is leading the<br />

company’s expansion into the Middle East where they have<br />

successfully won a number of recent projects in Qatar <strong>and</strong><br />

Saudi Arabia.<br />

Neil S<strong>and</strong>berg, S<strong>and</strong>berg<br />

Following graduation from Exeter University, Neil joined the<br />

UK based contractor Mowlem to work on various projects<br />

including London City Airport. After secondment to Ove<br />

Arup in London working on projects such as Stockley Park,<br />

Neil moved to the USA working with Greiner, a large American<br />

consulting engineering firm. On returning from the States in<br />

1992, Neil joined S<strong>and</strong>berg to be based in their Clapham<br />

laboratories working as an engineer in the construction<br />

materials department. Two years later, Neil moved to Hong<br />

Kong to manage S<strong>and</strong>berg (Asia) Limited. Projects ranged<br />

from major bridges to Hong Kong Housing Authority schemes.<br />

In 1996, Neil returned to the UK to manage S<strong>and</strong>berg’s<br />

civil engineering group. In 2000, Neil became managing<br />

partner of S<strong>and</strong>berg. Neil is a past chairman of ACE. Other<br />

association roles have included being a board member of the<br />

European Federation of <strong>Engineering</strong> <strong>Consultancy</strong> <strong>Association</strong>s<br />

(EFCA) <strong>for</strong> six years until 2008.<br />

Sylvo Thijsen, grontmij<br />

Born in Holl<strong>and</strong> in 1959, Sylvo joined Grontmij in 1984. Having<br />

worked at different divisions in the Netherl<strong>and</strong>s, Belgium <strong>and</strong><br />

Germany he became chairman of Grontmij’s executive board in<br />

2003. Sylvo has also served as managing director of Grontmij<br />

Advies & Techniek, a member of the VROM council (Ministry of<br />

Housing, Planning <strong>and</strong> Environmental Management), a board<br />

member at PHN, a plat<strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> the Dutch wood <strong>and</strong> paper<br />

industry, <strong>and</strong> he was member of the advisory board of the<br />

environmental sciences group at Wageningen University.


gavin Thompson, Buro Happold<br />

Gavin is a chartered building services engineer with over<br />

20 years experience. He joined Buro Happold in 1988 <strong>and</strong><br />

became a partner of the practice in 2000, be<strong>for</strong>e becoming<br />

chief executive officer in 2005. While he is still actively involved<br />

in design <strong>and</strong> research, his responsibilities are focused on<br />

providing overall leadership <strong>for</strong> the firm which entails project<br />

involvement, from the earliest stages of exploring the brief with<br />

the client to detailed internal design reviews. He has lived <strong>and</strong><br />

worked in mainl<strong>and</strong> Europe, the Middle East, North America,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Far East <strong>and</strong> retains a key interest in developing Buro<br />

Happold’s presence overseas. Since Gavin became CEO, Buro<br />

Happold has opened 10 new offices world wide, including<br />

Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Moscow <strong>and</strong> Pune with expansion<br />

planned in other strategic markets.<br />

eamon Timoney, fehily Timoney <strong>and</strong> company<br />

Eamon is a co-founder of Fehily Timoney <strong>and</strong> Company<br />

<strong>and</strong> the current managing director. He is also joint managing<br />

director of Fehily Timoney Ramboll <strong>and</strong> Fehily Timoney<br />

Gif<strong>for</strong>d. Eamon has over 30 years experience as a consulting<br />

engineer. He holds an honours degree in civil engineering<br />

from UCD (1976). He is a chartered engineer, a Fellow<br />

of Engineers Irel<strong>and</strong>, a Member of the Institution of Civil<br />

Engineers, a Member of the Chartered Institution of Water<br />

<strong>and</strong> Environmental Management <strong>and</strong> a registered consulting<br />

engineer with the <strong>Association</strong> of Consulting Engineers of<br />

Irel<strong>and</strong>. He is currently President of the <strong>Association</strong> <strong>for</strong> the<br />

period 2010-2011. Eamon is chairman of the Construction<br />

Industry Council <strong>and</strong> a member of the Construction Industry<br />

John Turzynski, Arup<br />

John is a director of Arup, having joined the firm in 1977. Since<br />

then he has worked in the United Kingdom, the USA, Zambia<br />

<strong>and</strong> Australia. He has been a leader of Arup’s building design<br />

business in London, Europe <strong>and</strong> the USA. He is currently<br />

Arup’s chief operating officer <strong>for</strong> the UK, Middle East <strong>and</strong><br />

Africa region. He has led multidisciplinary project teams on a<br />

variety of projects in the UK, Europe, the USA <strong>and</strong> beyond.<br />

These have ranged in size from master plans <strong>and</strong> major<br />

redevelopments to more modest projects. In recent years,<br />

John has focused on building projects associated with major<br />

infrastructure developments, particularly related to cities <strong>and</strong><br />

mats Wäppling, SWeco<br />

Mats has served as CEO <strong>and</strong> president of SWECO AB since<br />

January 2007 <strong>and</strong> has been a member of the board since<br />

2003. Mats is 54 years old <strong>and</strong> has an MSc in civil engineering<br />

from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. From<br />

2003 to 2006 he was the executive vice president of the<br />

Swedish construction company NCC AB <strong>and</strong> President of<br />

NCC Property Development. Prior to this, he held various<br />

positions in the Skanska Group between 1979 <strong>and</strong> 2002,<br />

including executive vice president <strong>and</strong> business area manager.


Paul Zofnass, efcg<br />

Paul is a graduate of Harvard College, <strong>and</strong> an alumnus of<br />

both Harvard Law School <strong>and</strong> Harvard Business School. He<br />

is president of EFCG (The Environmental Financial Consulting<br />

Group), an investment banking <strong>and</strong> financial advisory firm he<br />

founded 20 years ago, to provide financial <strong>and</strong> strategic advice<br />

to the engineering <strong>and</strong> consulting industry. Today EFCG serves<br />

as a retained advisor to 40 of the industry’s leading firms<br />

world-wide, providing business <strong>and</strong> strategic advice. EFCG<br />
