THE DANUBE
With 2.888 km from the source to the delta,
the Danube is the second longest river
in Europe. It connects a wealth of people,
cultures and countries. The majestic river
winds its way through 10 European countries
(Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary,
Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova
and the Ukraine) before it empties into
the Black Sea.
The Danube unites, divides, fascinates and
touches. It has shaped countries and their
people – scenically, historically and culturally.
Each section of the river is unique and
emits its own magical attraction. From impressive
natural wonders to architectural
witnesses of a rich and turbulent past, to
charming villages and vibrant metropolises
on the banks of the Danube. These
exceptional attractions line up like pearls
on a string.
The queen of Europe‘s rivers is a promising
and unconventional travel destination
that knows no bounds and is just waiting
to be discovered.

The journey is the reward
It is not where you are going, it’s about how you get there
The Danube is one of the most promising tourist destinations in Europe. To reach the Danube and
explore its diverse attractions, most tourists use their private car, this entails a negative impact on the
environment and the local population.
In order to counter this situation and to steer it in a different direction, 15 project partners from nine
countries have joined forces in the Transdanube.Pearls project and are pursuing a common vision:
To perceive the entire Danube region as a unique The main aim is, to build a network of destinations
– so called Danube.Pearls – which will allow
destination in which tourists as well as inhabitants
can move around with socially fair, economically tourists to travel in an environmentally friendly
viable, environmentally friendly and health-promoting
mobility services.
• to the respective Pearls,
• from one Pearl to another and
• within each Pearl.
ULM/NEU-ULM
TWO CITIES, ONE DESTINATION
Linked and yet divided by the Danube: the old former free
imperial city of Ulm in Baden-Württemberg and the new
city of Neu-Ulm in Bavaria. Ulm is the birthplace of Albert Einstein
and is characterized by its historic and picturesque fishermen’s
quarter and the gothic Minster which is the highest
church building in the world. Neu-Ulm offers a unique panorama
on the Danube, beautiful parks in the heart of the city and
a modern shopping center. The cities form a cultural center
between medieval and modern times; with many museums,
traditional festivals and regional cuisine. Sport enthusiasts can
enjoy a bicycle tour along the popular Danube Cycle Route.
Moreover, the twin-cities provide the perfect starting point for
exploring the neighbouring areas by train or bike, such as the
source of the Danube in Donaueschingen, the Swabian Alb
with its magnificent countryside, romantic towns and the historic
cloisters in Upper Swabia. The region gained attention
in 2017 with the “Caves and Ice-Age Art of the Swabian Alb”,
which received the UNESCO world heritage label. The world’s
oldest known musical instruments and figurative artworks
have been discovered here. They are made of mammoth ivory
and date back 40.000 years! A visit of the caves shows how
ice-age inhabitants lived in former times.
Medieval times meet modern times in Ulm and Neu-Ulm
A trip to the twin-cities guarantees a special experience: You will visit the magical old town, picturesque
quarters and old lanes right next to contemporary buildings. Enjoy calm and relaxing recreational areas
along the Danube or visit historic caves and bring to life the ice-artist within you.
DANUBE UPPER AUSTRIA
JEWELS BEYOND A POSTCARD VIEW
Do you remember that feeling when your heart started
pumping as soon as the curtain rose at the puppet
theater and revealed its magnificent setting? This is the same
childlike joy that everyone experiences when they step out
onto the platform that provides a view of the Danube loop
in Schlögen. It is the flagship of the Upper Austrian Danube
region, which extends from Passau, 180 km downstream, to
the small village of Grein. Starting from the steep bank slopes
at “Donau engtal”, up to the wild and romantic shores in
“Strudengau”. In the middle of it all lies Linz. The UNESCO City
BRATISLAVA REGION
WATER & WINE, HISTORY & SUN
Bratislava Region is the smallest region in Slovakia in terms
of size, but the variety of remarkable places makes it one
of the most interesting ones! The region is rich in aesthetic
natural landscapes and important monuments. There are
outstanding viewpoints, beautiful forests, bike paths along
the Danube, interesting geological sites and impressive historical
and sacred sites. Bratislava Region has its very own
little hotspots, where the region can be experienced to its
fullest.
Záhorie, which lies west of the capital, is a natural paradise
in which pine forests dominate. The little Carpathians (north
of the capital) are decorated by vineyards. Here you can
experience folk tradition up close and good wine as well
as excellent food. Senec, east of Bratislava, is known for its
clean lakes. Podunajsko (Danube area) is mainly associated
with the Danube and is characterized by water sports such as
canoeing, sailing and rafting. Here you can find hot springs
and outdoor swimming pools, which are open all year round.
Finally, there is of course Bratislava, the metropolis, the gate
to the region, with its vibrant and lively happenings.
There are certain landscapes, which grant people with
inspiration or warmth and give them a new strength to
ham, meat from tünka, dödoli, prekmurska gibanica, bograč
and other culinary delights that you cannot get anywhere else.
Enjoy your moment with a glass of wine accompanied by a
breath-taking view on the picturesque wine-bearing terraces.
hurry when the local countryside beckons you with its peacefulness
and picturesque nature to stop and stay awhile.
The one thousand year long presence of life in this area, located
in what might be called the very heart of the Danube,
has always been marked by profound harmony between man
a home to more than 270 species of birds.
From Osijek, a city with medieval heritage and picturesque art
nouveau facades, the EV 6 - Danube Cycle Route takes you all
the way to Vukovar and the European destination of excellence
VUKOVAR-VUČEDOL-ILOK, recipient of the EDEN prize for cultural
tourism.
The Danube valley is rich with castles, museums, stories and legends.
Visit them and discover the mysterious world of Vučedol,
enigmatic stories from the past as well as the Vukovar Nocturne.
Taking a boat trip to the village of Nijemci leads you into a whole
new world, like a Robinson Crusoe-style adventure. Along the
way, you will also enjoy the view of charming vineyards overlooking
the Danube, as well as a glass of heavenly wine for every
wandering passenger. Mesmerised by the beauty of the surrounding
nature, cultural heritage and the taste of excellent wine,
plan to stop and stay here for a while, because it is here that the
Danube smells like nowhere else.
IRON GATE ROMANIA
AN AUTHENTIC BLUE LAND
The Romanian Iron Gate Pearl is representative both in terms
of diversity and value and is also marked by the Danube
river and its beautiful gorges. The Danube gorges are an integral
part of the “Iron Gates I” natural park. The cultural and
historical potential includes important tangible and intangible
elements of the local cultural identity. The area is home to
several Roman heritage sites.
The Herculane Spa resort is characterized by its thermal springs
and setting in a valley sheltered by mountains. It is one of the
oldest spas in the world with an attestation of more than 1850
years.
Orsova municipality was the site of a Roman port in Dacia
Malvensis. Few tourists know that old Orsova town is presently
submerged under water due to the construction of the Iron
Gates dam. The Romanian Iron Gate Pearl offers many tourist
attractions to the visitors such as caves, old monasteries,
Pescarus island, Decebal Rex statue, Roman Catholic cathedral
and the museum “Iron Gates”, the remains of the old Roman
camp Drobeta and remains of the legendary Traian’s bridge. In
the Iron Gate area mountains and water harmonize perfectly.
Here, wilderness and civilisation reunite to form a place of impressive
beauty.
DJERDAP / IRON GATE SERBIA
WHERE THE DANUBE TELLS HISTORY
Following the Danube on its journey to the Black Sea, you
will reach one of the most beautiful sceneries along the
whole river – Djerdap Gorge (the Iron Gates). This natural
Pearl lies between the slopes of the Carpathian and Balkan
mountains and it is the place, where the Danube is its widest.
Besides its breath-taking nature, which you can enjoy by visiting
the Djerdap national park, you will have the opportunity
to discover various layers of history. Each encapsulating the
presence of different cultures that settled the river throughout
the ages. From traces of neolithic men that carved fishlike
sculptures at the archaeological site Lepenski Vir, the face
of Dacian king Decebalus, tables and bridge pillars built by
Roman emperors, fortresses and castles from Ottoman era,
all the way to monumental industrial heritage of modern
times. All of this can be experienced between the cities Veliko
Gradište and Kladovo, within less than 200 km.
Besides the unique culture and history of Djerdap, this Pearl
will also welcome you with fresh food, undiscovered wine
sorts and the hospitality of the locals.
VIDIN REGION
A TIMELESS UNIQUE EXPERIENCE
The essence of Vidin Region is the unique combination of
significant cultural, historical and natural sites with preserved
folklore traditions, authentic culinary delights, local
wines and attractions for incredible experiences. The advantage
of the Vidin Region is that different kinds of tourists can
experience unforgettable memories, as the strategic Roman
road, that comes from Singidunum (Belgrade) and the Iron
Gates pass through the region. Therefore numerous monuments
still stand from the Roman era within the Vidin Region:
Like the fortress Kale – Belogradchik, which was built
at the time of the Roman empire or the medieval fortress
“Baba Vida”, which is one of the most preserved medieval
defence facilities in Bulgaria. It was built on the remains of
an older ancient fortress named Bononia. The guests of the
region can also enjoy the natural phenomena Belogradchik
rocks which is a natural rock formation. In 2009, in the world
campaign for the selection of ‘The new 7 Natural Wonders of
the World’, Belogradchik rocks finished in second place after
the Grand Canyon and the Magura cave which is the largest
cave in Bulgaria. Due to its cave paintings and the variety of
shape- and size of the formations, the Magura cave is one of
the most unique caves in south eastern Europe.
RUSE REGION
EXPERIENCE THE SPIRIT OF FREEDOM
In the eastern part of the Bulgarian Danube, a whole region
can be described as a true Pearl. The heart of the Pearl is
the city of Ruse. In the 19th century it was the gate for the
cultural European influence on Bulgarian lands. Its preserved
patterns of urban architecture and museums are among the
most attractive and stylish throughout the country. The Pearl
is famous for its rich cultural and historical heritage dating
back to the early days of the Roman empire. Here, ancient
cities were built around 1800 years ago as Roman fortresses.
Starting in Svishtov the Pearl stretches across Ruse and
the small fishing town of Tutrakan all the way down to the
100 km distant Silistra. Nowadays, all of them are river ports
with picturesque Danube parks offering many opportunities
to explore the wild and romantic landscape by cycling, hiking
or sailing. With the Srebarna biosphere reserve, which is
a UNESCO world heritage site, the Rusenski Lom park and
the Persina nature park, the region presents many interesting
natural sites that are ideal for seeking untouched nature.
While visiting this pearl, you will feel the spirit of freedom,
freshness and a bit of mystery everywhere.
In the lands of roman legions
Recommodations
The Ruse Pearl is ideal for embarking on a search
for traces of the Roman era. In Svishtov you
can make a visit to the Roman camp and early
Byzantine city Novae. It is the best-preserved
legionary camp in the north-eastern provinces of
the Roman empire. The next visit is at Sexsaginta
Prista located in the north-western part of the
town of Ruse, on an upland next to the riverbank
of the Danube. During the past years the site
was revitalized and now it is among the most
attended museum exhibitions. From Ruse you can
go to Tutrakan which originated as a settlement
with the rank of vikus (village) called Transmariska
during the Roman empire. The fortress was an
important station on the military road connecting
Belgrade (Singidunum) and the Danube Delta.
The last point of your visit can be the Durostorum
fortress in Silistra.
DANUBE DELTA
NATURE’S PARADISE
Do you remember the feeling of curiosity and joy you
had, when you visited a place for the first time? Or how
do you feel when you visit a unique place that rebuilds a
feeling you had while reading a mysterious story in your
childhood?
Exploring the Danube Delta is a trip full of adventure, whose
highlight is the point where the Danube and the Black
Sea merge. Reaching the beautiful Danube Delta is like a
reward for all tourists that are travelling along the mighty
river. While watching the birds and admiring the natural
and unique sights, the Danube Delta makes you think that
nature knows better. The Danube Delta is an UNESCO natural
world heritage site. It combines elements of modernity,
views of the wild channels, the locals and ancient tradition.
The birds that live here, the flora, the channels, shallow bays
and hundreds of formed lakes with extensive marshes and
reed-bed, remind you of the song “Heaven is a place on
earth”.
