A Coach’s Duties and Players’ Rights<br />
Chief among your responsibilities is the need to safeguard the physical well-being of<br />
your athletes. You are responsible for the prevention and care of athlete injuries. This<br />
means taking precautions to prevent injuries, administering emergency first aid, and<br />
securing or recommending professional medical treatment as soon as possible when<br />
injuries occur.<br />
The Bill of Rights for the School and College Athlete has been developed by the American<br />
Medical Association’s Committee on the Medical Aspects of Sports to define the duties<br />
and rights of athletes and their coaches in regard to the health of young athletes, as<br />
follows:<br />
Participation in athletics is a privilege involving various responsibilities and rights. The<br />
athlete has the responsibility to play fair, to give his best, to keep in training, to conduct<br />
himself with credit to his sport and his school. In turn he has the right to optimal protection<br />
against injury as this may be assured through good technical instruction, proper regulation<br />
and conditions of play, and adequate health supervision.<br />
AN ATHLETE’S RIGHTS<br />
Good Coaching<br />
The importance of good coaching in protecting the health and safety of athletes<br />
cannot be overstated. Careful conditioning and technical instruction leading to skillful<br />
performance are significant factors in lowering the incidence and decreasing the<br />
severity of injuries. Good coaching includes discouraging tactics that violate the law or<br />
spirit of the rules, or that may increase the incidence of injuries.<br />
Good Officiating<br />
The rules and regulations governing athletic competition are made to protect players<br />
as well as to promote enjoyment of the game. To serve these ends, the rules of the<br />
game must be thoroughly understood by players as well as coaches and be properly<br />
interpreted and enforced by impartial and qualified officials.<br />
Good Equipment and Facilities<br />
Proper equipment and facilities are essential to provide the protection athletes need.<br />
Good equipment is readily available; the problem lies in the false economy of using<br />
