In the same year, he founded
the Think Papanui Facebook
page which shares information
on city council consultations,
community board agenda
items and decisions, local
projects, and other community
work.
Mr Britten said he would
decide whether he was running
for the board or city council
before the nominations closed
in July.
“An elected role representing
this community represents
something I’m really passionate
about . . . I also think it
would be something I would
be good at, I have the right skill
set.”
Mr Britten has been a leader
at Papanui-based community
development organisation Te
Ora Hou Otautahi since 2011
and has volunteered for the
Papanui Youth Development
He is also on the Casebrook
To reflect the Gibson sisters’
idea, Rachel said the school
theme this year is “flourish”.
Every year the student
leadership team, comprised of
eight year 13 students and 12 clan
leaders, chooses a theme for the
year.
“As young women in 2019, we
are fortunate to have so many
choices and opportunities which
help us to ‘flourish’ far more
than perhaps our grandparents
or great grandparents could,”
Rachel said.
“We wouldn’t be here without
the previous generations,
for example, standing up for
women’s rights and paving the
way for future generations,”
THE DISTANCE between the
hydrotherapy pool and the toilets
at Taiora: QE II Recreation and
Sport Centre is causing pool
users embarrassment.
Parklands resident Aileen Trist
said the hydrotherapy pool was
most often used by people who
need close access to the toilet and
changing room facilities.
However, the hydrotherapy
pool is further away from the
RESPECT: Students from Christ’s College joined with Rangi
Ruru students to make a video which aims to encourage
people to think about and thank the women they admire.
Rachel said.
“We want the girls to know
that with failure can come even
greater success. Taking a risk in a
facilities than any other pool at
the venue.
“People that use the
hydrotherapy pool use it because
they have a disability, whether
it’s a big one or a small one, they
have mobility problems.”
City council head of recreation,
sports and events Nigel Cox said
the hydrotherapy pool was 55m
away.
He said installing the pool
any closer to the facilities had
not been an option because the
supported and safe environment
is a good time to try things
you might otherwise not have
thought about.
budget for it was a late addition.
Mrs Trist said her husband
Tony has suffered two strokes and
is paralysed down his left side.
He was almost left
embarrassed trying to get to the
facilities during the couple’s last
trip to QE II, she said.
Mrs Trist wants three
uni-sex toilet facilities to
be installed closer to the
hydrotherapy pool so others
like her husband do not have to
struggle in the future.
NOR’WEST NEWS
“It can build confidence and
emotional resilience, which
especially for young women is
really important.”
A video produced by Rangi
Ruru students, with assistance
from Christ’s College, went live
on both schools’ websites on
Friday. It hopes to encourage
others to think about and thank
the women they admire most.
And what would the school’s
1889 founders think of the world
for women today?
“I believe the Gibson sisters
would be very proud of Rangi
Ruru in 2019, as we inspire,
challenge and empower young
women within a community
that knows and cares for them,”
Rachel said.
Call to put toilets near QE II hydrotherapy pool
She discussed this proposal in
front of the Coastal-Burwood
Community Board at its meeting
last week.
The board requested the
city council seek urgent advice
on how the toilets could be
added.
Mr Cox said the city
council was aware of Mrs
Trist’s concerns, but there are
currently no plans and no
funding available to install more
accessible toilets.
