New bottle
store on
track to
open in
Halswell
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
AN APPLICATION to open an
off-licence bottle store in Halswell
still appears to be on track.
Western News reported two
weeks ago Bottle-O Halswell
Ltd had cancelled its contract
to purchase a shop at The Oaks
Village Halswell complex,
indicating the bottle store would
not go ahead.
However, it has now been
revealed Bottle-O Halswell Ltd is
negotiating to lease the premises at
29 Ensign St, instead of buying it.
Director and shareholder Wendy
Gibbons would not comment on
whether it would be leasing the
premises.
In December, Bottle-O Halswell
Ltd was granted an application to
open an off-licence liquor store on
Ensign St.
The decision was appealed
by the Halswell Residents’
Association and a hearing is
scheduled in May.
An email from city council
district licensing committee team
leader Allison Houston to the
Halswell Residents’ Association
on February 25 confirmed the
company is now negotiating to
lease the premises.
THE FALLOUT between Halswell
residents over the community Facebook
page has gone up a another notch (page 5).
Greig Russell was ousted from the
Halswell Community Group page after
he posted a phone number of a motorist who had borrowed a
wheel from him and then failed to return it.
Russell asked the 11,000 or so Facebook members to call the
guy, which he hoped would pressure him into returning the said
goods. But that’s a no-no on the community page – and Russell
was given the heave-ho.
So he set up his own Facebook page, which Western News
reported last week.
And now he’s upped the ante again, which the Halswell group
has responded to.
The gloves are off.
Kahu Rd improvements finally passed
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
TWO COMMUNITY boards
had to meet again last week to
pass safety improvements for
cyclists on a busy Fendalton
road after a they failed to do it
last year.
The decision has come six
months late because there
at a meeting in
September to
make a formal
decision on the
improvements to
Kahu Rd outside
Christchurch
Boys’ High
School.
The original
meeting was
deemed invalid due to the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board only having
four members present.
A quorum of five members
from each board is needed to
make a formal decision.
City council head of
DELAYED: A decision to make Kahu Rd outside CBHS safer
was delayed by six months due to a community board
procedural error.
community support, governance
and partnerships John Filsell
admitted an error was made and
it had never happened before.
Last year, CBHS expressed
concerns over the safety of road
users and the large number of
students who cycle to the school.
CBHS has had a significant
redevelopment, causing cycle
parking facilities to be relocated,
which resulted in significantly
greater cycle activity on Kahu
Rd outside the school.
The error meant all affected
parties had to repeat their deputation
to the boards again.
Kahu Rd resident Leigh
Webber said he was very disappointed
in the process.
Residents were concerned
the city council staff recommendation
to have drop-off and
pick-up zones on both sides of
Kahu Rd and no stopping on
Girvan St would mean a loss of
car parks. However, the board
members went against the staff
recommendation and approved
the installation of a drop-off and
pick-up zone on the north side
of Kahu Rd.
It will be in effect between
8.30-9.30am and 2-4pm,
Mondsay to Friday. Outside
these times parking will be
unrestricted.
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board deputy
chairwoman Helen Broughton
said the boards decided to “take
the middle path” to relieve some
issues for the school and help
residents.
CBHS senior master Craig
Dunnett said it would have been
nice if the improvements had
happened earlier.
“Any change is a good change
if it is going to make it safer
for the school users and the
community users on the road
there,” he said.
He said the school would
have preferred the city council
staff recommendation but
understood residents were
concerned about losing car
parks.
Mr Dunnett said the area
outside the school was “an
accident waiting to happen.”
Mr Webber said the board
made an acceptable decision, but
it is the school’s responsibility to
ensure its students’ safety.
“CBHS are trying to transfer
all the costs and trouble over
to the public when the answer
lies within the school itself,” Mr
Webber said.
Bottle store on track to open
at The Oaks Village Halswell
•From page 1
Said Ms Houston: “We have
been advised, (Bottle-O Halswell
Ltd) are not withdrawing the
application. They are however
in the process of renegotiating
their tenure from purchasing
the premises in full to a leasing
arrangement.”
Residents’ association secretary
David Hawke said it is working
on its appeal and is in discussions
with a lawyer about presenting its
case in May.
He did not have a view on the
bottle store being leased, saying it
was up to the applicant.
The residents’ association’s
original objection against the
application stated there were
sufficient facilities in Halswell for
alcohol with Craythorne’s Public
House, Super Liquor and New
World Halswell.
Mr Hawke said there is
evidence any new bottle
store going into an area
significantly increases
alcohol-related harm.
But the decision
granting the application
said Mrs Gibbons had the
experience necessary to safely
PLANNED: A bottle store may still open at the The Oaks Village
Halswell complex in Ensign St, Halswell.
sell alcohol.
It said alcohol-related harm
would be minimised by good
amenity in the area and the
position of the store within the
development.
WAITING GAME: Quarry opponent Simon Moore is
disappointed that Templeton residents received help on
submission-writing but Weedons residents haven’t yet.
Quarry opponents miss
out on submission help
• By Anan Zaki
A QUARRY opponent is
disappointed that some
residents have missed out
on submission writing help
sessions.
Templeton residents were
offered six generic submission
writing sessions by the city
council in order to prepare for
the battle against a proposed
Fulton Hogan quarry near the
area – but Weedons residents
did not receive any sessions.
Quarry opponent Simon
Moore said a number of
Weedons residents went to the
city council organised sessions
in Templeton as they did not
have their own.
Environment Canterbury
consent and planning manager
Virginia Loughnan said it and
the Selwyn District Council will
not provide the sessions until
the resource consent application
is publicly notified.
“We are choosing to run these
during the notification period
as that is when the public can
make submissions and therefore
is more timely and can help
inform an actual submission as
the whole application will be
available then,” she said.
Said Mr Moore: “What’s the
point of that? Why?”
“Why do we have to wait? It’s
going to be a rush as it is. I just
don’t see any point,” he said.
Fulton Hogan submitted a
resource consent application
to quarry near Templeton and
Weedons in late November.
Quake damage to historic
lodge will be repaired
• By Georgia O’Connor-
Harding
ONE OF the city’s oldest
domestic buildings, located
on Racecourse Rd, will be
able to be lived in again
after being unoccupied for
about four years.
The city council will
carry out earthquake
repairs on the historical
Chokebore Lodge.
Built in the 1850s, the
lodge was sold to horse
trainer and breeder Henry
Redwood, who was later
dubbed the father of New
Zealand racing.
Though Mr Redwood
remained in Nelson, horses
were trained at Chokebore
by jockey and trainer Edward
Cutts.
City council capital
delivery community manager
Darren Moses said
while a contractor needs
to be engaged to provide a
programme on the repairs,
the preliminary date for
handover is October next
year.
Following the February
the previous tenant was
There was a severe
failing of the western and
northern cob walls and
repair work is required to
the other cob walls but to a
lesser extent.
The timber-framed
living area has damage
to the fireplace and all
chimneys have to
be repaired and
strengthened.
The brick cook house
area also requires repairs.
The project will cost
$1.17 million.
Mr Moses said the
procurement process has
not as yet commenced, so
currently, it does not have
a builder engaged on the
project.
OUTSPOKEN Halswell resident
Greig Russell has always believed
in the power of free speech.
After being removed from a
community Facebook page in
Halswell of nearly 11,000 members
for posting a mobile number
online, the 40-year-old steel
fabricator has taken a stand on
people having the right to speak
their mind.
Mr Russell set up his own
community Facebook page called
Halswell Community Page Uncensored
after falling out with the
administrators of the Halswell
Community Group page.
Now bumper stickers with
#bringbackgreigrussell and
appear around the suburb.
Mr Russell said the idea is to
spread the message of free speech.
on community food shelf the
chairwoman and one of the administrators
“If he has merchandise he
Mr Russell said everyone, part
opinion and it wasn’t right for a
group of administrators to decide
what people should see or read.
“In a roundabout way, you
could say it is an abuse of power
because they are dictating to
But Dr Horn said the group
could not be seen as dictators.
“We have a responsibility to
manage this page and people are
voting with their feet in terms
of participating on it . . . nearly
10,000 people are active on it.”
Chance for student to connect with China
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
TIM MARSHALL has a strong
interest in connecting people to
China.
So it is only fitting Canterbury
University’s Global China Connection
club president will travel
to Washington next month to
a global summit aiming to give
young people business and cultural
opportunities.
The 20-year-old Halswell resident
has been selected to attend
the Global China Connection
Summit in Washington, DC.
The summit runs for two days
and will include meeting with
future leaders from US universities,
speakers from Chinese and
US humanitarian agencies and
other members from GCC clubs
around the world.
It will be Mr Marshall’s first
time travelling to the event, after
being involved in the Global
China Connection club for
about two years before becoming
president in November.
“I think it is important because
they (China) are trying to
play a huge part in our economy
and we have a lot of culture relations
now.
“We have a lot of students
coming across now, I think it is
important we all have all good
month for the Global China Connection Summit in Washington
strategies and ways to manage
that and understand each other,”
Mr Marshall said.
He has just started his third
year studying a Bachelor of
Commerce at Canterbury University
and is hoping to work in
international relations when he
graduates.
“Helping New Zealand business
connect with the Asian
region or vice versa. I think it is
really important we have those
strong ties,” Mr Marshall said.
He first became interested in
China about two years ago while
working with Chinese students
on a language technology project.
At the end of 2017, he
travelled to Beijing for five
weeks to research the culture
and how to increase migration
from China into Canterbury as
part of the Canterbury Mayoral
Forum.
“It is on another level, it is an
incredible place . . . the culture
of the place is totally different,”
Mr Marshall said.
The key difference that stood
out to him was the city having a
rental bicycle system similar to
the Lime scooters – where they
can be picked up and dropped
off from anywhere.
Phones were also used as a
form of payment instead of
credit cards and the agriculture
technology was very advanced,
Mr Marshall said.
He said while China and New
Zealand’s political systems are
different, the two countries have
a good connection.
Mr Marshall said businesses
on Kyle Park
CHANGES NEEDED to pave the
way for a Hornby mega-facility
to be built at Kyle Park have gone
out for public consultation.
The city council needs to
make changes to the Kyle Park
Management Plan and the area’s
reserve classification in order for
the Hornby Library, Customer
Services and Leisure Centre to be
built.
The changes would apply to
the north-east corner adjacent to
Waterloo Rd and Smarts Rd —
the part of the Kyle Park proposed
for the new facility.
The rest of the park will remain
unaffected.
It is after the Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
approved having the management
plan go out for public
consultation and to reclassify part
of Kyle Park recently.
The Hornby facility and
associated car parks will make up
four per cent of the total park area.
The city council is proposing to
reclassify 1.52ha, which is 17.5 per
cent of the total part area
Park decision questionable
Halswell-
Hornby-
Riccarton
Community
Board deputy
chairwoman
Helen
Broughton
writes about the decision
to build the Hornby
mega-facility at Kyle Park
ON DECEMBER 5, 2018, the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board determined
by a narrow vote, five to four, that
Kyle Park be the site for the new
$35.7 million Hornby Library,
Customer Services and South
West Leisure Centre.
The originally chosen site, Denton
Park, was rejected by a city
council panel considering reserve
reclassification after strong presentations
from the community.
The community board
unanimously accepted the panel’s
recommendation.
Council is taking considerable
risk in building a pool on uncontrolled
landfill.
Asbestos is present and 50 per
cent of some areas are organic
material; leachate testing has not
been done.
The initial geotechnical advice
to the community board was that
this site was difficult to remediate,
costing between $8 to $10
million, possibly higher.
After additional testing at the
board’s request, the additional
cost was reduced to $ 5.8 million.
The $5.8 million reduces the
scale of the facility, as council
has made it clear that the cost
of ensuring land stability comes
out of the $35.7 million budget
allocation.
Hornby will receive a smaller
facility because of remediation
costs.
The cost of remediation could
go higher – in my experience, few
city council projects on
flawed land come in at the estimated
price.
Any additional funding
required reduces the size and
facilities of the complex.
There is a requirement for gas
DECISION: Last year a
narrow Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
vote determined Kyle Park
would be the location for the
Hornby Library, Customer
Services and South West
Leisure Centre.
testing that will take another six
to 12 months and a reclassification
application together with
resource consents are required.
Why was the decision rushed?
The complex will not be completed
until late 2022.
The four board members
who voted against Kyle had not
discarded Kyle but merely wanted
it considered with other options-
Sockburn School, Waterloo Business
Park and Warren Park.
Unfortunately, all have complications
– there is no ideal site.
In my view, the board had the
responsibility to consider these
options and undertake further
community consultation.
This is a major project – southwest
residents deserve the best
possible facility.
Bupa resident
shares wheelchair
safety message
•From page 1
More than 30 residents use
wheelchairs at the care home.
Ms Crothall ran her first
session recently and will be
rolling other sessions out to
Bupa care homes.
Ms Crothall said power chair,
manual chair and scooter safety
is “near and dear” to her heart
after her power chair went off a
kerb about a year ago.
“I couldn’t see the kerb and I
went flying,” she said.
Ms Crothall said while she
hit her head and had to have
her arm X-rayed, she was not
injured from the fall.
“I had a tray on my
wheelchair and it was a blue
sparkly one and I couldn’t see
off the end of it . . .
I advise people to have a clear
one, so you can see through,”
she said.
Ms Crothall said since the
accident she has decided to see
how she can improve safety for
other wheelchair users.
“I was determined to make
it my responsibility to do
everything I can in my power
to stop any more of that
happening,” she said.
The sessions will discuss
a wide range of tips for
wheelchair users.
Ms Crothall said key tips
include always wearing a
seat belt inside and outside,
ensuring the wheelchair has
a rear vision mirror, wearing
a flag and going at a sensible
speed.
“You are essentially a car
when you are using a scooter or
a powered chair”.
Ms Crothall, who was
born with spina bifida, said
it is also important to consider
any other impairments a person
may have when they are using
the chair.
“If I had to have an option
of people making fun of me
or teasing me for doing what I
am doing or being unsafe . . . I
would pick wearing safety gear.
It is not worth the risk.”
Ms Durning said the sessions
have been great for improving
safety.
Head students outline their goals
SCHOOLS
NEWLY-ELECTED head
students from across the western
area of the city write about their
goals for the year.
Next week the Western News
will feature Christchurch Boys’
High School, Christchurch Girls’
High School and Riccarton High
School:
Middleton Grange
School head boy and girl
Zinan Bennett and Jessica
Swan
“A dead thing can go with the
stream, but only a living thing can
go against it.” - G.K. Chesterton
We are Zinan Bennett and
Jessica Swan, and we are
privileged to serve Middleton
Grange School as head boy and
head girl in 2019.
As representatives of the pupil
leadership team, it is our greatest
desire, that as we lead, pupils
would feel a passion stir in their
hearts to “swim upstream,”
that they would be equipped
and encouraged to stand up for
what they believe in, and greatly
influence where they believe
change is necessary.
By integrating the core
values of character, excellence
and service into our various
leadership teams (ie. Waiora,
environment and culture) we
want our peers to be motivated
to do whatever they feel
called to, wholeheartedly and
unashamedly.
Ultimately, Middleton longs
in all it does to bring honour
and glory to God as a school that
seeks His favour and wisdom
before all else.
Regardless of each individual
pupil’s convictions, we hope
that through exposure to
various opportunities, such as
the new centre for leadership
development and influence, or
the international ambassador
programme, pupils would find
and act upon what inspires them.
Middleton Grange School head girl Jessica Swan and head boy
Zinan Bennett
Every great change begins
with a dream and, in the words
of Harriet Tubman: “Every great
dream begins with a dreamer.”
So this year, it is our greatest
hope to see pupils begin to
dream and find their purpose.
Resulting from this, we can all
lead, as a student-faculty, from a
place of influence and passion.
Hornby High School head
students Lachlan Hickford
and Shardey Harris
As a prefect team, we want
to be able to make a positive
impact on our school and build
a community spirit that we can
be proud of. We plan to run fun
events and activities all year
long, aiming to get as many
students engaged as we can. We
also wish to create a legacy that
we can all be proud of through
creating positive experiences for
everyone in the school and the
wider Hornby community.
Lachlan – This year my main
focus is to be a positive role
model for the school through my
role as head boy.
I also aim to gain excellence
endorsed overall for level 3
NCEA and gain UE for an audio
production degree at MAINZ
next year.
I am actively involved in
playing football for club and
school, and I also enjoy writing
and performing music, especially
through the music programme
at Hornby High.
I have always looked up to the
prefects and head students ever
since I started at Hornby High.
I saw the positive influence they
had on other students and it
encouraged me to want to take
an active leadership role in the
school.
The main reason that I wanted
to be a head student was to give
back to my school by sharing my
experiences, and the knowledge
I have learnt along the way with
the younger students of the
school, in the hope that they feel
more comfortable to take pride
in themselves and their school.
Shardey – This year my
focus is to keep a balance
between my role as head girl,
whilst maintaining good
academic grades. This is so I can
give back to my school as much
as I can, while still aiming to
achieve level 3 NCEA endorsed
Hornby High School head students Lachlan Hickford and
Shardey Harris:
with excellence.
It is also important for me to
know what direction I will be
going in after leaving school,
as I am still on the journey of
discovering what I am most
passionate about.
I wanted to become a head
student because I was inspired
by prefects from previous years
who served others because of the
pure fulfilment and joy they got
out of it. I want to be able to help
guide and support those younger
than me, make a positive
difference in their lives and share
some of my school experiences
with them that they can learn
from.
I also hope to encourage
students to embrace who they
are and take pride in themselves
as individuals and as part of the
wider Hornby whānau.
Burnside High School
head boy Ofa Puleiku – As
a person, I have always tried
to spread positivity amongst
everyone I meet and I have
always enjoyed supporting
people and helping people.
I knew that if I had got the role
of head prefect I would be able
to influence more people than
I would usually and spread the
positivity to a wider range of
people.
I also wanted to inspire other
young Pasifika students to strive
for the best to
express their
leadership
qualities and
capabilities.
My main goal
this year was
to boost school
culture, to get
more students
along to events
to support
Ofa Puleiku
their fellow
students. If we
had the whole
school learn the school waiata
and school haka it would be a
powerful thing to perform it in
support of a sports team or at
graduation.
Sports, especially rugby, has
had a major impact on my life
and it’s something I have always
enjoyed.
I have also always been in
love with art and the ability
to express yourself with not
only visual art but also
performing.
School has
always been a
goal of mine.
Leadership is
something that
is something
important
to me as it
provides an
opportunity to
make a change
and to help at
the ultimate
level. This is the main reason why
I applied to be head girl as I had
the chance to achieve the goals I
have to enhance the well-being of
our school as a whole.
In particular, the goals I have
for Burnside High School is encouraging
a supportive environment
around our school where
everyone feels included and
shows school pride.
Being of Māori descent I wish
to promote a culturally diverse
school that empowers its students
and embraces the bicultural
aspect of Aotearoa.
Villa Maria head girl
Kia ora koutou,
My name is Eadaoin Roughan
and this year I have been given
the privilege of representing Villa
Maria College
as head girl.
I am a proud
New Zealandborn
Solomon
Islander, and
I love the
sciences and
maths.
I came to
Villa Maria
College in 2015
as a year 9 student
and over
the years have
come to learn what it means to be
a Villa girl.
Through its special character,
Villa weaves the values of
SCHOOLS
Students’ goals
Whakaute (respect), Manaakitanga
(hospitality) and Tika (justice)
into all aspects of college life.
Whether it be through service,
academics or cultural aspects of
the school, all students reflect
these values.
Mercy Day is one of my favourite
events of the school year. Every
second year, Villa Maria College
hosts a Mercy Day, inviting other
students from the community
with disabilities to take part in
fun activities with the students
from Villa.
Last year, a petting zoo was
set up on the school grounds for
visitors and students to interact
with. The students also organised
a wide range of interesting activities
for our visitors. My group
hosted a gingerbread decorating
activity that was very popular
among all.
However, the highlight of
Mercy Day is the concert that
we put on, which was enjoyed by
students and visitors alike.
Villa offers a wide variety of
opportunities for all students.
Last year, I had the privilege
of meeting the New Zealand
Governor-General Dame Patsy
Reddy, which was an inspiring
experience.
This year, the college leaders
and I will focus on encouraging
Villa girls to try something new
and give every opportunity a go.
I will also introduce a Māori
“word of the week” to our college
community, each new word will be
one of encouragement, for example
“Ka wani kē” meaning “wow.”
A great amount of support
comes from all my family, friends
and teachers, without them I
wouldn’t be where I am today.
This support keeps me going and
encourages me to achieve more
and more.
At Villa, there is so much talent
in every student which inspires
me too, we support and inspire
each other, which creates a great
environment for everyone.
Following my graduation at
the end of 2019, I hope to study
chemistry and biology at university.
However, I like to focus on the
present, and experience all this
year has to offer.
Strong summer of
tennis earns reward
• By Gordon Findlater
FENDALTON resident Abby
Mason has been rewarded for a
strong summer by being selected
in the New Zealand Junior Fed
Cup team to compete at the
Asia-Oceania qualifying event.
Abby, 15, received a phone
call last week during a coaching
session to learn she will be
heading to the tournament in
New Delhi from April 15 to 20.
“It was such a good feeling,”
said Abby.
“It’s something I’ve been
aiming for, but I didn’t think I
was going to make it so it was
quite a surprise.”
Over the last six months Abby
has turned her focus to tennis,
something she believes has
helped elevate her game. She
previously swam competitively
which involved training four
times a week and attending
meetings at the weekends.
She also played representative,
club and school hockey last year.
However, she will only play for
school this year in her pursuit
of improving her skills with the
racket.
“I’m putting a much
bigger emphasis on tennis,” she
said.
“There was one point during
the winter where I was playing
more hockey than tennis. It
definitely didn’t help at all, so
hopefully, it will help my tennis
this year.’’
Abby’s coach James Meredith
has been impressed with the
steps forward her game has
taken over the summer after
shifting more of a focus to
tennis. He believes she has the
right tools to succeed going
forward.
“She’s an all-rounder, there’s
no real weaknesses in her game.
She’s tall and has a big serve
which means she can win a
lot of free points. She’s very fit
which her hockey has probably
helped with,” said Meredith.
“She always does well on beep
tests and can scramble to win
make balls to keep points alive.”
Last month Abby picked up
her first junior ITF ranking
points after collecting two wins
at the Tennis Canterbury ITF at
Wilding Park.
Abby defeated 16th seed
Amy Stevens from Australia
in the first round 7-6, 6-4. She
then beat China’s Zijun Jiang
5-7, 6-2, 6-3 before falling to
17-year-old Holly Stewart of
Auckland 6-3, 2-6, 1-6 in the
round of 16.
At the 16U New Zealand
Junior Championships Abby
was defeated in the quarterfinals
by eventual champion
Jade Otway 4-6, 3-6. However,
Abby impressed at the 18U New
Zealand Junior Championships
WESTERN NEWS
with two wins – including a 6-4,
7-5 win over eighth seed Ivy
McLean – to reach the quarter
final stage.
Before heading to India with
the New Zealand team Abby
will represent St Margaret’s
College at the national
secondary school champs at
Wilding Park from March
25-28. She will also compete at
two Tennis New Zealand Kiwi
Money tournaments in Timaru
and at Cashmere Tennis Club in
March.
In the future Abby hopes to
play tennis for a United States
college before seeing how far she
can go in the sport.
SPORT
Getting fit for
• By Jess Gibson
AFTER A lifetime of low
self-esteem and a fear of injuries,
Jennine White felt unfit,
vulnerable and afraid to work
out.
Now the 33-year-old
performance reporting analyst
will take part in the 6km
City2Surf run on March 24
feeling better than ever.
Mrs White decided to focus on
her health in November after a
visit to her doctor to talk about
a shoulder injury turned into a
discussion about how her lack
of fitness was affecting her wellbeing.
Her doctor recommended
the ‘green prescription’, a free
programme which offers advice
from a physical activity coach.
She received a plan from her
coach Olivia Maisey and gained
the confidence to participate
in the City2Surf after she was
encouraged to see a personal
trainer, get injury rehabilitation
and see a life coach.
Mrs White is now positive she
can push herself to do the 6km
event if she alternates between a
brisk walk and a jog to take care
of her injury.
While she has finished with
the green prescription, she
said Miss Maisey has been like
her “cheerleader”. She said her
personal trainer, life coach,
family and friends have all helped
her to stay motivated.
“People like me need someone
in our corner and someone to
help us fight through to get a
better lifestyle,” she said.
Mrs White said she is focussed
on her well-being rather
than losing weight, and feels
“amazing” because of it.
“My mental health is so much
better, I have reduced anxiety
and sleep so well. I feel like I’m
on another planet now,” said Mrs
White.
Miss Maisey said it was good to
see how extra support can make a
difference to someone’s lifestyle.
smashing it,” said Miss Maisey.
“She has done amazing.”
FINALS-BOUND: CBHS’ junior cricket side have advanced to
the national junior secondary school boys tournament after
defeating Nelson College in their regional final.
Finals spot for CBHS
• By Gordon Findlater
CHRISTCHURCH BOYS’ High
School’s junior cricket team will
head to Palmerston North to
take on the country’s best at the
junior secondary school boys
tournament.
They booked their spot at the
competition by defeating Nelson
College by 41 in the regional
final at Burnside Park last week.
Batting first CBHS scored 180
where opening batsman and
captain Robbie Foulkes laid a
good platform, while wicketkeeper
batsman Easton Stocks
also made a healthy contribution.
They then completed the job
by bowling out the opposition
for 139 to book a spot at the
competition they last won in
2015.
“They’re really pleased,” said
coach Rob Smith.
“They’re a committed group
and are looking forward to
testing themselves against the
country’s best schools.”
CBHS also had wins over
Christ’s College in the regional
quarter-final and Timaru Boys’
High School in the regional semifinal.
