Head students outline their goals
SCHOOLS
NEWLY-ELECTED head
students from across the western
area of the city write about their
goals for the year.
Next week the Western News
will feature Christchurch Boys’
High School, Christchurch Girls’
High School and Riccarton High
School:
Middleton Grange
School head boy and girl
Zinan Bennett and Jessica
Swan
“A dead thing can go with the
stream, but only a living thing can
go against it.” - G.K. Chesterton
We are Zinan Bennett and
Jessica Swan, and we are
privileged to serve Middleton
Grange School as head boy and
head girl in 2019.
As representatives of the pupil
leadership team, it is our greatest
desire, that as we lead, pupils
would feel a passion stir in their
hearts to “swim upstream,”
that they would be equipped
and encouraged to stand up for
what they believe in, and greatly
influence where they believe
change is necessary.
By integrating the core
values of character, excellence
and service into our various
leadership teams (ie. Waiora,
environment and culture) we
want our peers to be motivated
to do whatever they feel
called to, wholeheartedly and
unashamedly.
Ultimately, Middleton longs
in all it does to bring honour
and glory to God as a school that
seeks His favour and wisdom
before all else.
Regardless of each individual
pupil’s convictions, we hope
that through exposure to
various opportunities, such as
the new centre for leadership
development and influence, or
the international ambassador
programme, pupils would find
and act upon what inspires them.
Every great change begins
with a dream and, in the words
of Harriet Tubman: “Every great
dream begins with a dreamer.”
So this year, it is our greatest
hope to see pupils begin to
dream and find their purpose.
Resulting from this, we can all
lead, as a student-faculty, from a
place of influence and passion.
Hornby High School head
students Lachlan Hickford
and Shardey Harris
As a prefect team, we want
to be able to make a positive
impact on our school and build
a community spirit that we can
be proud of. We plan to run fun
events and activities all year
long, aiming to get as many
students engaged as we can. We
also wish to create a legacy that
we can all be proud of through
creating positive experiences for
everyone in the school and the
wider Hornby community.
Lachlan – This year my main
focus is to be a positive role
model for the school through my
role as head boy.
I also aim to gain excellence
endorsed overall for level 3
NCEA and gain UE for an audio
production degree at MAINZ
next year.
I am actively involved in
playing football for club and
school, and I also enjoy writing
and performing music, especially
through the music programme
at Hornby High.
I have always looked up to the
prefects and head students ever
since I started at Hornby High.
I saw the positive influence they
had on other students and it
encouraged me to want to take
an active leadership role in the
school.
The main reason that I wanted
to be a head student was to give
back to my school by sharing my
experiences, and the knowledge
I have learnt along the way with
the younger students of the
school, in the hope that they feel
more comfortable to take pride
in themselves and their school.
Shardey – This year my
focus is to keep a balance
between my role as head girl,
whilst maintaining good
academic grades. This is so I can
give back to my school as much
as I can, while still aiming to
achieve level 3 NCEA endorsed
Hornby High School head students Lachlan Hickford and
Shardey Harris:
with excellence.
It is also important for me to
know what direction I will be
going in after leaving school,
as I am still on the journey of
discovering what I am most
passionate about.
I wanted to become a head
student because I was inspired
by prefects from previous years
who served others because of the
pure fulfilment and joy they got
out of it. I want to be able to help
guide and support those younger
than me, make a positive
difference in their lives and share
some of my school experiences
with them that they can learn
from.
I also hope to encourage
students to embrace who they
are and take pride in themselves
as individuals and as part of the
wider Hornby whānau.
Burnside High School
head boy Ofa Puleiku – As
a person, I have always tried
to spread positivity amongst
everyone I meet and I have
always enjoyed supporting
people and helping people.
I knew that if I had got the role
of head prefect I would be able
to influence more people than
I would usually and spread the
positivity to a wider range of
people.
I also wanted to inspire other
young Pasifika students to strive
for the best to
express their
leadership
qualities and
capabilities.
My main goal
this year was
to boost school
culture, to get
more students
along to events
to support
Ofa Puleiku
their fellow
students. If we
had the whole
school learn the school waiata
and school haka it would be a
powerful thing to perform it in
support of a sports team or at
graduation.
Sports, especially rugby, has
had a major impact on my life
and it’s something I have always
enjoyed.
I have also always been in
love with art and the ability
to express yourself with not
only visual art but also
performing.
