The business fourm’s objective was to discuss how the bank could support the country’s agenda for development. The event, on the theme ‘Grow with Africa’, saw all the experts of the company in global finance; markets; transaction and payment services; and structured finance interact with some government ministries, agencies, regulators and customers on natural resources; structured finance and asset financing; positive impact finance; trade finance and cash management; and capital markets. The seminar was followed by workshops at which the various experts from the company had more intimate discussions with selected stakeholders. The main objective of the program was to foster development of the economies and populations through multi-dimensional support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), infrastructure financing, innovative financing solutions and financial inclusion. According to Societe Generale, one of the initiatives is the creation of SME centers across Africa to provide resources for business development. Mr Alexander Maymat, Head of Africa, Mediterranean Basin & Overseas Region for Societe Generale Group, explained that the creation of the centres came in addition to the bank’s decision to increase access to credit to support SMEs, which are the cornerstone of African economies. He said infrastructure financing is another key aspect of development in Africa, especially in energy, transport, water and waste management, and even the development of smart cities. Clients are finding in Ghana their own way to consume banking products and services, and we believe that our unique positioning, which combines knowledge of the local economies and the expertise of an international banking group, is the key to support the country’s development,” Mr Maymat said. He also pointed out that on promoting development through financial inclusion, the objective is born out of the strong conviction that there is a real need for alternative banking models to accelerate financial inclusion across Africa. He said “80% of the African population remains unbanked and microfinance remains crucial to integrating this section of the population that has not accessed the traditional banking system. In this vein, new distribution models that use mobile devices are a more practical approach to servicing this unbanked population.” Mr Hakim Ouzzani, Managing Director, Societe Generale Ghana, explained that under innovative financing, and with a special emphasis on agricultural industries and energy partnerships, the bank was planning to provide access to a range of banking and non-banking services that are healthcare, education, advisory and many more to one million farmers over the next five years. “This target is being made possible by YUP, the bank’s online mobile money platform that brings finance to the doorstep of everyone,” he added. He also said Societe Generale’s desire to contribute to sustainable development in Africa is also driven by the initiatives of the bank’s corporate foundation for solidarity. He said “the foundation has already supported close to 100 projects promoting professional integration in 14 African countries, and the budget it dedicates to projects in Africa will be considerably increased over the coming years.” The management also commissioned a business centre known as ‘SG Home of Business’ at the Osu branch in Accra. Judge everyone and everything for yourself —Henry James NDC’s Dr Kwabena Adjei passes on AFORMER National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Kwabena Adjei, has passes on. He died Tuesday morning at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, formerly Ridge hospital, a highly placed source at the party confirmed to the media. The politician who was the chairman when the NDC won power in 2008 had been battling with a protracted sickness first reported in the media in August 2015.
