Thanks to help from area coaches and the eyes of 22nd Century Media staff, the best players were selected from seven high schools — Glenbrook North (GBN), Glenbrook South (GBS), Highland Park (HP), Lake Forest Academy (LFA) Lake Forest (LF), Loyola Academy (LA) and New Trier (NT) — in our coverage area. —Compiled by 22nd Century Media staff First team second team Guard alex Press — GBn senior • 12 ppg, 4.4 rpg; The senior was one of three Spartans who averaged double-digit points this season. He helped lead the Spartans to a CSL North title. Guard connor Barrett — La senior • 14 ppg, 5 rpg; The Rambler improved on his Team 22 Second Team honor he earned last year. Barrett was named to his second consecutive all-conference team despite missing nine games at the end of the season. Guard Brian Johnson — GBn senior • 13.9 ppg, 5.03 rpg; After a strong senior campaign, the Spartan earned his first Team 22 honor of his high school career. Johnson showed off his shooting range this season, shooting 47 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-point range. Guard Bellamy marcus — LFa senior • 12.1 ppg, 2.7 apg, 1.5 spg; The senior guard from New York was second on the team in scoring, helping lead the Caxys to another double-digit win season. Will King — GBs senior • 8.5 ppg, 3.84 rpg, 7.8 apg; The point guard helped lead the Titans to their first regional title in 10 years this season. King shot 54 percent from the field. Quinn Pemberton — La senior • 7 ppg, 5 apg, 2 spg; The senior guard was the floor general for a talented Rambler squad and helped fill the void when Barrett was out with his injury. The senior also shot 59 percent from the field. Forward dom martinelli — GBs junior • 24.6 ppg, 6.82 rpg; Boy did the junior improve on his honorable mention nod from last season. Martinelli shot 65 percent from the field, 43 percent from three-point range and scored more than 800 points alone this season. Forward ciaran Brayboy — nt senior • 11.4 ppg, 4.8 rpg; The Trevian was the key player for New Trier this season. Brayboy was named to the Central Suburban League All- Conference team and proved to be a threat all over the court. Brayboy improved on his Second Team nod last season and will play at Harvard next year. spencer Boehm — nt senior • 10.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.1 apg; The Central Suburban League All-Conference selection shot 53 percent from the field and averaged over 20 ppg when Brayboy and Silverstein were out with injuries. He’ll play at Washington University-St. Louis next season.

But on March 5 the Trevians took a big step in the right direction during the Illinois State quarterfinals at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville. New Trier looked every bit like the top seed as it dominated ninth-seeded York in every phase dispatching the Dukes 6-1 to earn a spot in the state semifinals. “We had been struggling to score goals lately,” New Trier’s Henry Freedman said. “And we had a tough loss to Loyola in the Scholastic Cup. But we weren’t focused on that. After that loss, we were excited about our playoff game. We played with a very high energy level and this was the exact type of performance we needed to have. It felt great after having to go overtime twice against them.” New Trier coach Bob Melton thought everyone played his part in the team’s victory. “We really hadn’t played well since the South Bend Tournament in [February],” Melton said. “We were in a bit of a funk. It was nice to have a game like this. This looked like the old Green, the team that earned the number one seed. And it came from everyone contributing.” The Trevians outshot York 30-4, showing their dominance on both ends of the ice. But with the score tied 1-1, Freedman gave New Trier the lead for good with 13 minutes, 20 seconds left in the second period. “We switched lines and the guys I was playing with on my line were really hyping me and each other up,” Freedman said. “We were playing with a different level of excitement and that was a big reason why we played so well.” “We’ve switched lines throughout the year and been able to roll with different lines at different times,” Melton said. “It was a team effort throughout. It felt good to score six goals coming off the Loyola loss. We also recently played these guys in a best of three. We lost the first game and had to win in overtime the other two. We’ve had some injuries and having a week in between games will hopefully help get us healthy.” Logan Izenstark made it 3-1 with seven minutes left in the second. But the Trevians put things away for good closing out the second and opening the third in a big way. They scored twice in the final 20 seconds of the second on Brian Dolby’s goal and on Freedman’s second goal of the game. Then Patrick Chang made it 6-1 10 seconds into the final period. “Going into the third period, we wanted to go into the locker room closing things out strong,” Freedman said. “Getting those two goals added to the momentum that we already had and we carried it over being able to score quickly in the third. That was big being able to add three goals that quickly.” “I actually wasn’t happy initially because Dolby is a defender,” Melton said. “I wanted to protect the 3-1 lead we had. I’m glad his shot went in though. And we were able to capitalize on a couple more opportunities we had after that.” New Trier struck first on Jack Norehad’s goal with just over six minutes left in the first. York got only a few scoring opportunities but was able to convert one when Matt Anikiej tipped in a missed shot 20 seconds into the second. The Trevians hope this will be a permanent return to form with the semifinals awaiting them. “Even though we hadn’t been playing our best, we managed to play at a very high energy level,” Freedman said. “And I think this raised our confidence level because if we keep playing like this, we’ll be tough to beat.” Melton wants his team’s strong play against York to carry over to the semifinals. “These guys in the locker room were very excited about how we played,” Melton said. “But more importantly, they were happy but everything they were saying was they weren’t done. They said we need to keep playing like this and they’re not satisfied. Hopefully it gives us a confidence boost for next week.” Basketball From Page 47 led the Ramblers with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Connor Barrett added 12 points. Barrett leads a departing senior class that’s had some extreme success in its time as varsity players. The team has won three consecutive Jesuit Cups, holiday tournaments, regional titles and won 20 or more games for three consecutive seasons as well. “We have eight great seniors with our manager, and these guys leave a great legacy,” the coach said. “Hopefully our younger guys will be able to carry the baton. “People who are gritty are going to be very, very successful.
