Crash
injures
cop
killer
•From page 1
The attack stunned the
nation.
Lakich pleaded guilty
and was sentenced to life
imprisonment. He was released
on bail in 2004, after serving
15 years of his sentence and
was living in Kaiapoi.
Sergeant Rene Pabst said a
black Toyota car, which had
been driving north, crossed
the centre line and hit a 4WD
that was heading south. The
Toyota spun around hitting a
truck which was also travelling
south.
He would not say what
vehicle Lakich was driving or
comment further.
He said inquiries into the
crash are continuing. No
charges have yet been laid.
In a 2009 media interview
Lakich said he had suffered
two strokes and a heart attack.
He had cardiomyopathy (heart
muscle disease), suffers from
epilepsy, and would eventually
need a heart transplant. But he
said he didn’t want one.
THE MEASLES outbreak
has now reached 28 cases in
Canterbury.
Canterbury Medical Officer of
Health Ramon Pink confirmed
there are 28 cases yesterday, as
part of a new daily media briefing
now set up to address concerns
about the outbreak.
Two cases have also been
reported in Auckland – An infant
and a young adult have caught
the highly-contagious, infectious
disease.
Now, the
CDHB is racing
to get vulnerable
people in
the region
vaccinated.
An estimated
125,000 people
are in need of at
least one dose.
It said the best
protection from the disease was
for people to have two doses of
the MMR (measles, mumps and
rubella) vaccine.
A supply of 18,000 doses were
expected to arrive yesterday, with
a further 9000 expected arriving
today.
Unimmunised children aged
12 months to 13 years are the top
priority for the vaccine, followed
by teenagers and adults aged 14 to
28-years-old.
Measles tally jumps to 28
Alistair
Humphrey
INFECTIOUS: The number of measles cases in Canterbury
has now reached 28 and there are cases in Auckland.
It was standard practice
between 1969 and 1990 for
doctors to give just one vaccine,
leaving a number of people at
risk.
These people are entitled to the
second MMR dose free of charge.
However, people born before
1969 were regarded to be immune
as they had likely been exposed to
the disease in childhood.
On Monday, the CDHB
advised that of the confirmed
cases one was a four-month-old
baby and four were aged under
five-years-old.
Canterbury Medical Officer
of Health Alistair Humphrey is
recommending parents of babies
under 12 months old intending
to visit Canterbury in the next
few weeks should cancel their
plans if the outbreak of measles
continued to spread.
FAST FACTS
•Measles is a serious and
highly-contagious viral
disease.
•Up to 30 per cent of those
who catch it will develop
complications – usually
children under five and
adults over the age of 20.
•Measles during pregnancy
increases the risk of
miscarriage, premature
labour and low birthweight
in babies.
•Measles is spread through
droplets in the air and
through contact, so
anyone unprotected who
has been in the same
room as someone with
measles is likely to get it.
SYMPTOMS
•A respiratory type of
illness with dry cough,
runny nose, headache.
•Temperature higher then
38.5 deg C and feeling very
unwell.
•A red blotchy rash starts
on day four or five of the
illness, usually on the face
and moves to the chest
and arms.
