BODYWEIGHT TRAINING maintains its stronghold in 2019 fitness trends Bodyweight Training has again been recognised in the top five fitness trends we can expect to see in 2019. A recent global survey saw the top five spots claimed by Wearable Technology, Group Training, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Fitness Programs For Older Adults, and Bodyweight Training, respectively. Of these, bodyweight training remains the most consistently highly ranked trend. It has held a top five position since its initial inclusion back in 2013 when it was first recognised as a popular training style by the fitness community. The survey, conducted by ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal® (FIT), is in its 13th consecutive year and surveyed 2038 health and fitness professionals from all around the world. Bodyweight training requires minimal equipment, utilising your own weight as resistance through functional exercises and neuromotor movements. Personal trainer, Jason Debel, who also Bodyweight training has evolved over the years, taking it from a street workout to a high end calisthenics gym. co-founded online bodyweight training equipment retailer, Urban Strength (urbanstrength.com.au) says the results are not surprising given the nature of bodyweight training. Compared with many other fitness trends, it's an easily accessible and affordable way to incorporate fitness into your lifestyle. “From what I've observed in the last couple years, bodyweight training has only gone from strength to strength,” says Jason. “The kinds of challenges involved in mastering bodyweight movements, speaks to a part of our physiological and psychological makeup as humans that's made for functional movement and mental challenges. “Think about the kind of movements where you get to hang, jump, scale walls, swing from bars and climb ropes. Mastering these allows you to develop technical skills while building strength and stamina. It's how we were designed to move as opposed to simply lifting weight in the gym." Understanding the importance of incorporating structured exercise into your lifestyle cannot come at a more crucial time for New Zealanders. According to the most recent global obesity update from the OECD, a third of New Zealand adults are obese, making New Zealand the third most obese nation in the world. Bodyweight training has evolved over the years, taking it from a street workout to a high end calisthenics gym. It has also become popularised in the media thanks to the popular television series, Ninja Warrior, where contestants require bodyweight strength. The Australian version of Ninja Warrior first aired in New Zealand in 2017. Celebrities like Charlie Hunnam, Matthew McConaughey and Liam Hemsworth have been known to favour bodyweight training to maintain their physique and strength. • 34 INSPO – FITNESS JOURNAL MARCH 2019
