Contributors
Q&A
Stylists María & Patricia have teamed up to
create a new styling team that is ready to
take on any project! We chatted with the
Creative Duo by PM about how they got
their start and how they work as partners!
We’d love to ask how you both got to working
as stylists. We both studied fashion design in our
hometown and after working as stylists in Mexico for a
few years we moved to NY to continue with our career
with several clothing brands. The fun fact is that we
met while working for a French brand during New York
Fashion Week, not in Mexico.
You recently teamed up to form Creative Duo by PM,
tell us how this partnership came to be.
As we mentioned before, when we met during NYFW
we found out that despite having different styles and
opinions, when mixing and taking each other’s advice,
we create a very strong result… and we love that!
Women supporting women! That’s the best.
As a creative team, how do you work together?
We are always sharing inspiration with each other. We
are always texting! It can be music, images, basically all
the stuff that goes through our minds, until we land the
ideas and create mood boards; inspiration pages with
content. We use them a lot as tools for clients, projects,
etc.
What’s the most fun part of your job?
Probably selecting the clothes, colors, textures and
trends. Patricia enjoys the most doing mood boards
while María enjoys selecting the models and themes…
but honestly, we both enjoy the whole process from preproduction
to the final photo selection.
What is the most challenging?
We think the most challenging part of our job is putting
together all people’s opinions since there are usually a
lot of members in a production. Starting from the client
to the photographer, models, makeup, assistants, etc.
4
What is your go-to source for style inspiration?
We are lucky to live in NY, so basically going out for a
coffee is a great chance to get inspiration from all the
amazing people in the city. From kids to grandmas.
What was one of the most elaborate styling project
that have worked on? We can’t select only one since
each project involves a lot of steps and preparation,
although we agree that music videos can get very
complicated! There are a lot of people behind the
scenes and it can take hours to get one shot but we still
love styling music videos!!!
What are your favorite types of projects to work on?
The ones where we are totally free to be creative!!!
What do you hope to accomplish together?
We would love to have a bigger studio, to travel more
and of course to get more and more clients.
editor’s note
Did you have growing pains in childhood? Have your kids had
them? If you’ve experienced these aches yourself or watched
your child go through a sudden growth spurt, you know how
painful they can be.
I’m thankful that I never experienced physical growing
pains in my adolescence; however, I, like many of you, have
experienced a variety of metaphorical (emotional, parental,
and professional) growing pains in my life.
While you don’t appreciate them at the time, these are the
pains that are necessary for growth. It’s only when looking
back that you see how far you’ve come and how much you’ve
grown. All too often the fear of failure holds us back, and while
don’t experience the discomfort we don’t grow; we don’t get
to experience our full potential without taking that risk.
Here at Poster Child, we’ve had our fair share of growing pains.
Team members have come and gone, and we’ve had to adapt
to an ever-changing, ever-expanding kids fashion marketplace.
We’ve been stretched and strained with the growth of digital
media and the decline of print. At times it has been hard to see
how these struggles would pay off.
How would you like to
connect with us? As always,
tag @posterchildmag in your
Can’t wait to hear from you!
It seems so fitting that as we enter the season of Spring - a
season of new life and growth - we take time to envision the
future of Poster Child and anticipate the growing pains we will
face throughout the coming year.
In my personal life, I am expecting my second child who will
be born this July. I don’t expect to enter this new season of
parenthood without any challenges, especially with a toddler
at home adjusting to a new sibling. At Poster Child, we are
brainstorming and imagining how we can reach our audience in
new ways. We want to engage with this awesome community,
we want to hear your feedback and listen to what you truly
want as a reader and fan of Poster Child. We don’t anticipate
this growth coming without some setbacks and failures, but
perhaps they are the growing pains we need to reach our
highest potential!
Fashion
Runway recap!
In January, the Poster Child team travelled to Florence, Italy to
discover all the latest children’s fashions for AW19 at the beautiful Pitti
Bimbo 88 fair. Fashion shows held at the venue’s Sala della Ronda are
always a highlight of Pitti Bimbo and this season’s presentations did
not disappoint! We’re sharing top looks from three favourite catwalks.
The warmth of Spanish style is highlighted
every season in Pitti Bimbo’s Children’s Fashion
from Spain runway show. We loved attending
this bright and bold presentation! Favourite
looks can be seen by Boboli, Amaya and TUC
TUC. Inspired by Oliver Twist, Boboli’s AW19
collection bursts with plush and bell finishes, such
as corduroy, velvet, and a hint of fur. Garment
colours range from gooseberry to green, blue,
silver, and gold. Spanish brand, TUC TUC showed
off a collection inspired by FreeStyle with funky
rebellious streetwear. This creative, colourful and
expressive collection used dark backgrounds for
an added pop with primary colours as the main
colour story, adding volume and a sense of flow
with multi-coloured pompoms.

One of the most loved
runway shows at Pitti Bimbo,
is the highly attended
KidzFIZZ presentation.
Concentrating on innovation
expressed in shapes, colours
and garments, KidzFIZZ
brings together the most
creative collections by
brands that aren’t afraid to
designer Q&A
Meet art & eden
Remarkable Organic Kids Clothing. Made Responsibly.
Founder and CEO, Susan Correa, introduces us to her
purpose-driven brand, plus an exciting new
capsule collection with Animal Planet!
22
art & eden makes clothes that are better for people
and better for the planet, with the promise of full
transparency.
The New York-based children’s brand uses sustainable
materials, low impact dyes, low emission factories,
and recycled packaging to outfit kids aged
three months to ten years.
We were excited to chat with art & eden’s CEO and
founder, Susan Correa about her brand that has
reimagined the business of business, and how the
company is ushering in change in the unchanged
business of fashion - one kid’s outfit at a time!
What inspired the name of your label?
It was Seth Godin’s book Linchpin that was the catalyst
for my personal and professional transformation.
It afforded me an opportunity to make a course correction
from my blinkered pursuit of profit at any
cost.
I was on a trip to India to fund a nutritious meal
program for children living in the slums when I was
reading this book.
In this book, Seth Godin defines art as a human act,
a generous contribution, something that might not
work, and it is intended to change the recipient for
the better, often causing a connection to happen.
Art, he says, is composed of elements that are human,
generous, risky, and make both change as well
as connection possible. One could enjoy the status
quo, or could instead make art.
This led me to figure out how I could build something
that was best for the world and make change
in the unchanged business of fashion a reality. The
meal program for the kids, the power of Seth’s book
at a time where my heart was searching for deeper

designer Q&A
24

meaning to do work that mattered - it was a perfect
recipe for radical transformation. This definition of art is
where my journey to build out art & eden commenced.
This led me to studying how this seemingly utopian
idea could be made a reality. I began this journey of exploration
into the impact of fashion from seed to shelf
and was truly appalled by my own indifference prior to
this time, to truly understand the impact of business on
the planet. In my pursuit of profit, I had turned a blind
eye to the impact of our actions. We cannot go back to
Eden the beautiful paradise our species inherited on
this earth – but we are going to commence a journey to
attempt to recreate it. There is no planet B for the generations
to come. It’s our responsibility to leave them a
world, an eden, where they can thrive.
So art is the start of our journey and eden is our intended
destination it captures our why and the adventure
we have embarked on holistically.
What made you want to design for children?
When I started to study out the business of fashion one
of the first documents I read was, “The Deadly Chemicals
in Cotton” and I was appalled with the knowledge
of all that went into the making of fabric.
As the world is rapidly shifting towards a focus on health
& wellness, there is a hyper-awareness of what we put
into our own and our children’s bodies.
Children that eat organic food have much lower levels
of metabolites of high-risk insecticides in their bodies.
“Nearly 1,400 pesticides are registered by the Environmental
Protection Agency for agricultural and nonagricultural
uses that have been linked to brain/central
nervous system, breast, colon, lung, ovarian cancers as
well as Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” and
more.
Fashion’s dirty little secret is that it is a highly polluting
industry and its fabrics are made using a very high level
of toxic chemicals through the manufacturing process.
It was after my study out of the facts that I accelerated
my pace in building a business that cared about what
we put onto our children’s bodies as the same rests on
their skin – their largest and most porous organ.
What is your brand’s mission statement or goal?
art & eden makes remarkable kids products, responsibly.
We contribute in ways, big and small, towards making
the world a better, brighter & greener place - one
thoughtful product, one valuable life, and one considered
choice at a time.
What are the motivations or inspirations behind the
designs? We are inspired by the beauty and timelessness
of Mother Nature. Our prints reflect her splendor
and the myriad of species that inhabit our planet. We
are also inspired by all things that ‘build kids up’ and
are in sync with our brand’s DNA of caring, sharing &
uplifting.
Is there a style decade you are inspired by?
Our style mirrors the style of nature - where beauty and
style rest in timelessness.
What makes your label stand out in the industry?
We have made remarkable product, responsibly. This in
and of itself is our stand out quality, in a market that is
in a race to the bottom of the price pit. Our prints are
produced by a global community of artists.
Our cotton has always been 100% organic cotton. Our
attention to detail and considered choices are very evident
in the quality of our product and this resonates
with customers. Besides building an amazing product,
we have also built an awesome business where our
sights are firmly focused on triple top line accountability.
We understand today that it is possible for the gains
for business economics to coexist with wins for ecology
and an equitable society. We now know that embracing

designer Q&A
this perspective does create triple top line growth and
when the principles of intentional design are applied,
the gains for profit and planet can coexist and delight.
How does your design philosophy change when
creating for boys vs. girls? Our design philosophy
is simple - our products have to be remarkable and
comfortable, and that remains constant may it be baby,
boys’ or girls’ products.
What do you have coming up that you are really
excited about? The former Global President of Ralph
Lauren, George Hrdina, has recently committed to
supporting art & eden’s vision to create a better world
for all. He has come on board gratis – because of our
authentic commitment to make a difference to kids all
around the world and do work that matters. We feel
immensely grateful for the new and exciting opportunities
of global expansion that he is bringing on for art
& eden.
In 2020 the brand will be sold in Canada and Mexico
with distributors that have a proven track record of
great performance.
This year we have an exciting collaboration with Discovery
& Animal Planet. We have also commenced distribution
in Australia and the United Kingdom.
There is a whole lot more in the form of licensing deals,
collaborations, and distribution that we are super fired
up about. It is under wraps until our agreements are
signed, but stay tuned and fasten your seat belts.
What are your favourite items from the current
collection? Can a mother ever name a favorite child?
Every single garment we make, we pour love, thought
and consideration into it and are truly connected to the
items we produce and put out into the world.
I must mention here the very special collaboration we
are doing with Discovery and Animal Planet to bring
awareness to critically endangered, and vulnerable animals
brought us great joy as we were able to extend
ourselves to doing work that mattered.
How does Art & Eden embody the theme ‘Kindness’
through their brand philosophy? In our embrace of
triple top line accountability, we have taken a holistic
approach to what kindness means.
By incorporating the company since inception as a public
benefit corporation, we have committed to kindness
and caring about the community, planet, and people
into our brand DNA. We are committed to building a
business as a Force for Global Good.
Kids are the roots of all we do. That’s why we don’t stop
at design. art & eden implements two give-back programs
that directly benefit the children of our future
that radiate kindness:
Local Impact
Our team is beyond excited to partner with the Camden
School in Newark, NJ, where 95% of the students live
below the poverty line. We are developing a program in
which our staff will regularly volunteer to provide literacy
support, creative engagement, and mentoring. It’s
not all bound to the classroom though. After all, we like
getting out of the box! During the school year, students
will visit us in NYC to participate in hands-on learning
experiences in fashion and social entrepreneurship.
Global Impact
Proceeds from every garment you buy will be used to
positively impact the life of a child. We collaborate with
doctors in supporting their work globally to dispense
medication and vitamins to improve the lives of kids in
need. Through our “buy better. do better” campaign
we have donated 1.4 million multivitamins to children
across Central America.
SCARLETT
+ MICHEL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY KORNYA
32 28 18
ARTICLE BY ADRIENNE DORSEY

and Spotlight
s
ometimes necessity truly is
the mother of invention, and
a fussy, colicky baby becomes
the inspiration for a smart
baby-clothing brand. New parents
Scarlett and Michel Tikle set out to
find a solution to ease their daughter’s
discomfort and quickly realized a need
for an easily detachable bib that didn’t
irritate her skin or get in the way. Scarlett,
a chemical engineer by day in New York
City, remembered her childhood hobby
of sewing doll clothes and started
sourcing soft fabrics and experimenting
with bib placement until she perfected
the functional, comfortable design.
With their detailed design, manufacturer
in place and “smart baby clothes”
trademarked, the Scarlett + Michel brand
was officially formed in December 2018
with the launch of their first collection
and website. The debut collection uses
soft organic, GOTS-certified cotton
and features bodysuits, jumpsuits, onepiece
footies,
rompers, pants,
blankets, and
more. There’s a
snap-on smart bib
included so you’ll
never be caught
empty-handed.
Parents can
further customize
by adding
detachable
pacifier straps
and bonnets.
“What’s great is
that we sell all
our sets with a

and spotlight
matching detachable bib with the option of adding
other accessories that are sold separately,” said
Scarlett, who is expecting their second child this
summer. “The method of attachment is a patentpending
idea that is not on the market by any
other baby brand.”
While function is a top priority for the brand, they
focus on fashionable prints as well- their blue
whale print is a standout bestseller. The Bachelor’s
Catherine Giudici Lowe recently took notice of
this print on their one-piece style and declared it
was “the perfect outfit for my little drooler” and
shared it with her fans. Their classic muted pink
rose print is a favorite for baby showers, and their
upcoming fall/winter 2019 collection amps up the
playfulness with unicorns, sea turtles, and even
bears doing yoga poses.
“Our fall/winter collection will be focused on
new prints and softer, unisex designs suitable
for boys and girls,” said Scarlett, who recently
exhibited the new collection at the Children’s
Club trade show in NYC. “We are also looking to
add matching handmade toys made out of 100
percent organic cotton that can be added to the
Smart Pacifier Strap. We would like to highlight
on how functional our pacifier strap can be by
adding pacifier, any teether toy or our soft plush
toys!”
Looking towards the future, Scarlett + Michel aims
to problem solve for parents and further improve
the form and function of baby clothes on the
market. Positive feedback propels them forward,
despite being in a challenging industry. Eventually,
they would like to offer their patent-pending
design to other labels and leave their corporate
careers to focus on Scarlett + Michel full-time. As
their family grows in the City of Dreams, inevitably
clever ideas and solutions will come to fruition.
Little Dumplings
Moms and entrepreneurs Irene and Lauren created the
Better Bib the stylish, comfortable and effective bib that
is a MUST have for stylish little eaters! We had the chance
to test out this cool bib in action and share our review.
Meal time made stylish!
32
Flip the page to continue reading the full review.

Lifestyle
Little Dumplings was born from the idea that bibs,
a product that we use every day, shouldn’t be a
nuisance at mealtime. Tired of ruining cute outfits
or stripping their kids down at mealtime because
the bibs available were either ineffective or simply
uncomfortable, moms and entrepreneurs Irene and
Lauren set up to great a product they wished they
could find.
We first were introduced to Little Dumpling’s concept
when we bumped into the creator at a trade show and
we were so excited by the idea. Stylish bibs that were
actually practical? The novel ideal immediately caught
our attention and we wanted to be the first to test out
the product when they hit the market!
_____________________
34
The Better Bib product Irene and
Lauren developed ticks all the boxes
of function and form. The full-sleeve
concept makes feeding time more
fun and less stressful.
_____________________
Snug elastic wrists ensure no food enters the sleeve,
while the innovative collar guard tucks into your child’s
shirt to ensure even the drippiest of foods can’t leave
a stain. Made of 100% organic cotton jersey and a
lining of 100% organic French terrycloth, the Better
Bib is likely the softest bib you’ve ever felt and the
most comfortable bib your child will ever wear.
Perfect for on the go, the whole bib also folds up for
easy transport into the smart back pocket, keeping
the diaper bag mess-free!
To make mealtime even better, Little Dumplings’
Bamboo Plate Set is eco-friendly, baby-friendly and
stylish-mama approved. The 100% bamboo plate is
fitted with a silicone suction bottom that makes it
virtually impossible for baby to move, preventing spills
and aiding young children as they learn to self-feed.
Photographer and friend of Poster Child, Brenna
Turvey, had the opportunity to review both new
products from Little Dumplings and her daughter
Elsie loved them!
_____________________
“As soon as I opened Little Dumplings
bib and bamboo plate set - I knew that
it would be a hit with my daughter.”
_____________________
“The bib is so soft to touch and very practical. My
daughter likes everything to work like clockwork so if
her bib comes off during her meal (which they usually
do because the Velcro never lasts through washes)
she will stop eating until it is placed back on. So, this
bib is dream come true for us. It covers her torso
and sleeves completely with room to grow and the
little buttons on the back are such a nice touch. This
bib wasn’t going anywhere once it was on and her
movement wasn’t restrained like it often is with the
plastic shirt bibs.”
“The bamboo plate set was just as amazing. Each
separate unit was the perfect depth to hold all types
of food and the little edges helped her get the perfect
scoop every time! The spoon was easy to hold, easy
to use and the silicon part of it makes it perfect for
any teething baby. Little Dumplings is a new favourite
brand for this household!”
Lidya Jewett
Photography: RYAN PAVLOVICH
Hair & Makeup: HEATHER COLEMAN
Styling: ANGELIQUE FORTUNA

At only 12 years of age, Lidya Jewett has already
built up an impressive resume. The Nickelodeon
alum was recently seen in The Darkest Minds
opposite Amandla Stenberg, as Young Nakia in
Marvel’s Black Panther and in Hidden Figures as
a young Katherine Coleman.
Now you can catch Lidya as Sara Hill on NBC’s
Good Girls every Sunday alongside Christina
Hendricks, Mae Whitman, and Retta. The comedic
drama returned for its second season earlier this
month, and we were excited for the opportunity
to chat with Lidya about her role in the series.
How and when did you first get into acting?
I actually started with print modeling in Miami
when I was about 6 years old. I did location
shoots at resorts, so it was so much fun. From
there I started with commercials and then moved
into movies and television around 8 years old.
For those who haven’t seen the show, can
you describe the Good Girls series and your
character? Good Girls is a show about 3 suburban
moms who have situations going on in their lives
that are actually very common in today’s world.
They decide to break the law and rob a grocery
store in order to take care of their families. I play
Sara Hill who, in Season 1, suffers from a kidney
illness and her family cannot afford the medical
treatment for her. For her family, this is where the
robbing the store comes in. But in doing so, the
three moms get in deeper than they expect.
What part of Sara’s character is most like your
own? That is hard to say… Sara and I are a lot
alike in many areas. We are both really smart and
love school and learning but I would have to say
more than that, I am mentally tough like Sara.
She has had to stay strong through her illness
and being through being different at school and
among her friends.
How did you prepare for this role? I remember
having a few things going on at the time the
casting was going on for Good Girls. I prepared
for it like I do all the opportunities I get. I looked
at the family I would be a part of and the situations
they were going through, and I just put myself in
that place. I do remember wearing a “The Future
is Female” shirt to my audition. That went really
well with Sara’s opening scene of the series which
was part of the audition for the role.
What is most challenging about this role?
Oh… that’s a hard one. I LOVE everything about
this role. I would have to say if there is a scene
where Sara is sad, I have to work a little harder
because I am an overall happy person!
You’ve played so many amazing roles in your
young career; what has been one of your
favourite characters to play so far?
I would have to say playing Young Katherine
Coleman was pretty special. It was my first big
movie but the message of what the Hidden
Figures ladies did, and especially Katherine
Johnson, at NASA at that time in history is pretty
important.
Who are the actors that inspire you? I really
like Octavia Spencer. I was watching an older
episode of a show recently where Octavia was a
guest star. She was a worker behind a counter.
Now look at her. She stars and produces in Oscar
winning productions. I also am inspired by Andrew
Garfield. He is British, but he is so dedicated he
can change his accent for each role. That teaches
me that we have to dig deeper and learn aspects
to different roles. When I booked young Nakia
for Black Panther, I had to use an African accent.
If you weren’t an actress, which other on-set
job roles would you want to try?
OH!! I would love to direct!! But I also plan to
produce and of course, write!! I love writing!
What is something our readers would find
surprising to learn about you?
I think many would be surprised to know I was
adopted from an orphanage in Africa. I was born
in Ethiopia on the border of South Sudan and
came to America when I was 4 years old.
What do you do in your down time?
Well, school takes up a lot of my time, but I also
love to read for fun. I am generally reading about
2 books a week. I also love cooking Ethiopian
food with my Dad and meeting up with friends
when our schedules work out.

Spring Tale!
Once upon a time there was a boy
named Roman with an incredible
imagination, he was in charge of
creating the most unique and magic
stories.
One day, Roman was telling a story to
his youngest friend Rei. It was about
animals and nature, the smell of rain
during spring and all the beautiful
colors you can find once the winter is
over and the flowers start to bloom.

110

Rei started to imagine all
the things Roman was telling
her, she was super excited
when Roman came up with a
big, big bunny while Milana
was jumping really happy
because the sun was out and
she was walking and skipping
around with many colorful
butterflies.

104 112

Suddenly, her friend
Malina asked her for
some help, since she
was looking for her
friend “Mr. duck”.
On the other hand,
Teagan was thinking how
to keep the butterfly
on her nose forever…
How cute is that?

114
Milana finally found “Mr.
Duck” and started dancing
in the rain.
What a fun day so far!!!
That’s the magic of
spring.
Quack, quack...

After a few minutes everyone saw the
red, blue, yellow and basically all
the colors of the rainbow.
Yay! It was finally there!
Micah started biking to let
everyone know that the warm and
beautiful weather was back.
Time to play !!!
