The City of Derry Jazz & Big Band<br />
Festival is back for its 18th year.<br />
The annual celebration of jazz and<br />
big bands will feature artists from<br />
all over the world and welcome<br />
more than 70,000 revellers over<br />
the bank holiday weekend. Among<br />
the popular acts performing at the<br />
festival this year are Kitty LaRoar,<br />

Marc Almond has sold over 30 million<br />
records in a stellar career that has<br />
spanned five decades. His 1981 No.1 hit<br />
single ‘Tainted Love’ with the group Soft<br />
Cell broke all records as the track that<br />
remained in the US Billboard Top 100<br />
for the longest ever recorded period<br />
and topped the charts again in 1989<br />
with his duet with Gene Pitney with<br />

SPOTLIGHT ON JAZZ<br />
George Colligan<br />
George Colligan is not only one of the great<br />
jazz pianists of his generation, but has<br />
earned an international reputation as a multiinstrumentalist,<br />
composer, accompanist,<br />
teacher and bandleader.<br />
Winner of the 2015 DownBeat magazine<br />
Critics Poll, he has had a long association<br />
with living jazz legend Jack DeJohnette.<br />
With over 130 albums to date as an<br />
accompanist, Colligan has worked with a<br />
long list of jazz greats, including Buster<br />
Williams, Cassandra Wilson, Don Byron,<br />
Ravi Coltrane and many others.<br />
Kitty LaRoar<br />
“When Kitty sings, music stops to listen.”<br />
Stylish London singer Kitty LaRoar makes<br />
her debut performance at Bennigan’s Jazz<br />
Club singing, scatting and freestyling at the<br />
drums. The band will be showcasing original<br />
compositions from the album ‘Valentine’s<br />
Eve’, as well as original lyrics to the music of<br />
Monk, Ellington, Strayhorn and Sonny Rollins.<br />
Originally inspired by Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah<br />
Vaughan, Kitty LaRoar’s unique talents are not<br />
just as silky voiced songstress, scat-singer and<br />
drummer.<br />
She has a spellbinding ability to freestyle lyrics<br />
to melody on the spot, telling stories that are<br />
not only relevant to the song she is singing,<br />
but often weaving in references to life, love,<br />
nature, politics, current events, and even to<br />
people in the audience. The band performs<br />
highly original songs by Kitty and her pianist<br />
Nick Shankland and although the genre is<br />
clearly jazz, this unpredictable and eclectic<br />
music entrances and engages the audience.

Ryan Quigley<br />
Ryan Quigley is an award-winning jazz and<br />
lead trumpet player and an in-demand studio<br />
musician, composer, arranger and educator. The<br />
Derry born, Glasgow native and London based<br />
artist, has recorded and toured with Quincy<br />
Jones, Aretha Franklin, Harry Connick Jr, George<br />
Michael, and Sir Tom Jones. A lead and guest<br />
principal trumpeter he has appeared with the<br />
Grammy-winning Metropole Orkest, the Halle<br />
Orchestra, the Royal Northern Sinfonia, the BBC<br />
Scottish Symphony and Royal Scottish National<br />
Orchestras, the RTE Concert and Symphony<br />
Orchestras, and the BBC Big Band.<br />
Michael Janisch’s Trilateral<br />

getting spins on Gilles Peterson, NPR, WDR,<br />
JazzFM Radio Shows as well as coverage<br />
in Jazzwise Magazine, The NY Times, The<br />
Guardian and beyond. Tonight he performs in<br />
a trio setting with English alto-saxophone star<br />
Nathaniel Facey (Emperical, Jason Moran) and<br />
Ireland’s drum ace David Lyttle (Soweto Kinch).<br />

sidemen. In this masterclass, they<br />
will share some of the secrets to their<br />
long careers and explore topics such<br />
as soloing, accompanying, and the<br />
business of music.<br />

EDUCATION PROGRAMME<br />
For the third year running, over 1500<br />
children across Derry and Strabane will<br />
be introduced to jazz through Live Music<br />
Now’s schools <strong>programme</strong> in the runup<br />
to the festival. Between March and<br />
May, pupils at over 12 primary schools<br />
will receive jazz taster performances,<br />
delivered by some of Northern Ireland’s<br />
finest young musicians, including bassist<br />
Jack Kelly and guitarist Joseph Leighton.<br />
The short performances will be interactive<br />
and fun, including familiar jazz standards,<br />
and will be a perfect introduction to jazz<br />
for little ones, as well as showcasing our<br />
local young talent as aspirational role<br />
models.<br />

experience a less familiar genre of music<br />
was invaluable to us. Pupils are familiar<br />
with genres such as pop, country, classical<br />
but jazz is something they have little<br />

Live Music Now is the leading outreach and musicians’<br />
development charity, which places outstanding young<br />

2018 saw the passing of one of the<br />
great stalwarts of the Jazz Festival,<br />
the inimitable Jack Molloy (1939-<br />
2018). The founding member of the<br />
Derry Jazz Quartet, a driving, swinging<br />
drummer who was equally renowned<br />
as a singer and raconteur. The City<br />
of Derry Jazz & Big Band Festival has<br />
truly lost one of its legends.<br />
In tribute to Jack, his former<br />
colleagues will be performing this<br />
year as ‘The Derry Jazz Quartet’ at<br />
some of the venues in which he loved<br />
to perform. This will culminate in a<br />
special afternoon on Monday 6th May<br />
hosted by his friends at the City Hotel,<br />
where Jack spent many happy Festival<br />
Bank Holiday afternoons playing<br />
the music he loved. It will feature<br />
many of the musicians with whom<br />
he has performed - a fitting musical<br />
celebration of the life of the great<br />
Jack Molloy.

Enough Stuff Festival 2019<br />

The Enough Stuff Festival provides a space<br />
for giving information and support on<br />
practical sustainable choices for zero waste<br />
in everyday life as well as hosting discussion<br />
on how we can work together to make the<br />
system changes needed for a sustainable<br />
future. It promises to be fun for all the family<br />
with interactive workshops for kids of all<br />
ages throughout both days such as junk art,<br />
storytelling, an urban nature walk, singing and<br />
much more.<br />
There will be Fairtrade hot drinks, vegan<br />
cupcakes and street food, all enjoyed while<br />
being entertained by local musicians and<br />
street performers. Enough Stuff is free and<br />
open to all ages. A special welcome in 2019 to<br />
cyclists. We are encouraging people to make/<br />
bring recycled instruments as well as our own<br />
collection. To engage the public, we have an<br />
open stage/trash orchestra.<br />

Youth 19 at City of Derry Jazz & Big Band Festival<br />
This year Youth 19 will host a fringe <strong>programme</strong> to the festival that<br />
marries jazz with a number of other music genres to celebrate what<br />
young musicians are currently producing locally, while building on their<br />
knowledge of jazz music through several opportunities to participate.<br />
Highlights of the Youth 19 offering include workshops, masterclasses,<br />
outdoor concerts, on-street performances and live gigs with highlights<br />
at the Nerve Centre, North West Regional College and Sandinos, where<br />
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble who have blazed a trail as one of the best live<br />
acts in the music industry today, all the way from New York will headline<br />
the Youth 19 at Jazz closing gig.<br />
Youth 19 is a yearlong <strong>programme</strong> of events, festivals and projects<br />
