Jonathan Alder Local Schools will start
the 2019-20 school year with two new principals.
On March 11, the school board approved
the hiring of Taryn Fuller as the next principal
at Plain City Elementary. On April 8,
the board is expected to approve the hiring
of J. Clint Hayes as the next principal at
Jonathan Alder High School.
Plain City Elementary principal
Fuller replaces Kelly Hicks who is retiring
at the end of this school year after 30
years with the district, the last 12 as principal.
Fuller earned her undergraduate degree
from West Virginia State University and a
master’s degree in educational administration
from The Ohio State University. She is
working on her doctorate in early childhood
education through Concordia University.
After getting her start in teaching at
Mount Gilead Schools, Fuller was hired in
2008 as a second-grade teacher at Plain
City Elementary and as the varsity girls’
volleyball coach at the high school. In 2015,
she led the volleyball team to the state tournament.
West Jefferson PD welcomes new full-time officer
By Michael Williamson
Staff Writer
West Jefferson has a new addition to the
police department.
Mayor Ray Martin swore in Robert
Speakman at the village’s regular council
meeting on March 18. Speakman joins the
force as a full-time officer with pay set at the
two-year level.
“He has a lot of experience. We’re eager
to have him come here and be one of the new
leaders of the department and of the community,”
said Police Chief Rick Hardy.
We Support Our
Local Community
Speakman is a two-year veteran of the
Springfield Police Department and is a
United States Army veteran. He also works
with the community as a scout leader for
West Jefferson’s Boy Scout Pack 121.
Also at the meeting, council approved the
site plan and a variance for the landscape
plan for Project Maple Lot 1 located on U.S.
Route 40.
“Project Maple involved two pieces of
land. Medline will be in the rear plot of land,
and the Exeter Property Group will be in
the front,” said Steve Johnston, council
Johnston said construction for the Medline
building could start as early as spring.
In other meeting action, council:
• approved an ordinance that would
amend prior legislation passed in 2013, removing
law enforcement operations from
the employee handbook. The action would
return general operations to the department
and the mayor rather than through administration.
• adopted a recommendation from the
The next regular meeting of West Jefferson
village council is set for 7 p.m. April 1
in council chambers at village hall.
a 68-day contract.
Superintendent Chad Eisler informed
the board that he had done research on
neighboring districts and those of a similar
size to Madison-Plains and found that the
majority of districts employ a full-time athletic
director who also has other duties.
“I am supportive of giving some extra duties
to this person. I do think we do need to
be careful, though, in not overloading them
or overwhelming them,” Eisler said.
In some cases, athletic directors teach or
act as dean of students, while others contribute
on an administrative basis.
The board did not take formal action on
the position.
Also at the March 19 meeting:
• Treasurer Todd Mustain reported that
the district is in a “much better place” financially
and that it should finish the school
year better than it started. He estimated
finishing the year with $2 million.
He also announced that the district received
the Auditor of State Award based on
the results of its recently completed Fiscal
Year 2018 financial audit. The Ohio Auditor
of State’s Office presents the award to public
entities that demonstrate “excellence in financial
reporting in accordance with Generally
Accepted Accounting Principles and
compliance with applicable laws.”
• Kim Rogers, transportation supervisor,
reported that although the district has recently
hired three new bus drivers, it remains
understaffed in that department.
The next regular meeting of the Madison-Plains
school board is at 7 p.m. April 16
in the board meeting room at the elementary
building.
Education four times for exceeding expectations
in student growth. This past year, the
school received the All A Award, as well.
“We are thrilled for Mr. Hayes to transition
to the high school,” said Gary Chapman,
superintendent. “He is a talented and
passionate educational leader who has invested
himself in our students, staff and
community. We know he will continue the
high standard of educating and caring for
students that we have established at
Jonathan Alder.”
Hayes lives in Plain City and is married
with five children, all of whom are of school
age and attend Jonathan Alder Schools.
“I am very excited for the opportunity to
continue to serve our district and community
in a larger role,” Hayes said. “I have relationships
with almost all of the students
at the high school and can’t wait to get
started next year.”

Boost for bike path biodiversity
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
With posters and a persuasive pitch, three West Jefferson High
School students convinced the Madison County commissioners to
approve their proposal for boosting biodiversity along the Roberts
Pass Trail bike path.
Sophomore Emma Hostetler, junior Grace Shields and senior Loraine
Stone outlined their proposal during the commissioners’ park
board meeting on March 19. Science teacher Mike Harkleroad accompanied
them.
The students plan to plant prairie wildflowers and grasses at
the Wilson Road trailhead along the bike path, which runs through
Madison County and is part of the cross-state Ohio To Erie Trail.
The trailhead is located on Wilson Road SE, north of State Route
665 and south of Sparling Road in Fairfield Township, near West
Jefferson.
The group has scoped out a 1,500 square-foot area to be tilled
then divided into three equal plots—one for seeds, one for seedlings,
and one for a mix of seeds and seedlings. Planting likely will take
place in May. The students will check back at the end of the growing
season to see how each plot fared.
Shields explained that they chose prairie wildflowers and
grasses because they learned in class that Madison County once
was covered in prairies. In selecting specific species, they looked for
options that are drought-resistant, can handle partial shade, and
provide habitat for pollinators, Hostetler said. Their choices include
gray coneflower, Indian grass, nodding wild onion, sweet clover,
gray dogwood, common milkweed and dense blazing star.
According to Stone, the students will acquire seeds from area
suppliers, such as the Ohio Prairie Nursery, and hope to get help
from inmates at London Correctional Institution in growing the
seedlings.
County Commissioner Dr. Tony Xenikis offered up financial help
from the local Pheasants Forever chapter to which he belongs, citing
the organization’s focus on conservation as a reason to support
the project. The students will use the funds to purchase seeds and,
if necessary, seedlings and other supplies.
The project is an outgrowth of the Ecological Education Initiative
of Madison County, which aims to connect teachers and students
with the county’s natural areas through hands-on projects.
The plantings at the Wilson Road trailhead is the initiative’s first
project, according to Julia Cumming of the Madison Soil and Water
Conservation District.
“We’re reaching out to any school teacher who wants to work
with us along the trail or at the (Little Darby State Scenic River
Preserve) on ecological projects,” Cumming said.
To learn more about the Ecological Education Initiative, call
Julia Cumming or Brian Hackett at (740) 852-4004.
In other bike path related news, the Friends of Madison County
Parks and Trails (FMCPT) hosted their first full moon bike ride of
the season on March 19. Upcoming rides are planned as follows:
April 19, 7:30 p.m.; May 18, 8 p.m.; June 16,
8:30 p.m.; July 16, 8:30 p.m.; Aug. 15, 8 p.m.
Participants can choose between a 14-mile
route and a 25-mile route. Both start at
Phat Daddy’s Pizza, 15 E. First St., in London.
See https://fmcpt.com/rides/ for details.
There is no charge to participate.
Each spring, the Rails to Trails Conservancy
sponsors an “Opening Day for Trails.”
This year’s date is April 13, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
In Madison County, FMCPT members will
hand out free coffee and cookies at the Coffee
Peddler, 127 S. Main St., London, and
share information about the bike path.
Retired geologist Scott Brockman will
lead a geology bike ride May 4 during which
he will talk about the formation of the terrain
of the Ohio to Erie Trail. The ride runs
from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and starts at the Indian
Ridge parking lot at Battelle Darby
Metro Park, 8465 Alkire Rd., Grove City.
Chamber’s 2019 Bell Ringer award goes to Pfeil
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
When Jeff Pfeil showed up at the Madison County Chamber of
Commerce’s annual meeting, he had no idea he was bound for the
awards spotlight.
The West Jefferson resident was clearly moved when David Kell,
the Chamber’s executive director, called him to the podium as this
year’s Bell Ringer, an honor awarded annually to a county resident
dedicated to bettering the community.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be here receiving
this award,” Pfeil told the crowd gathered at the London Country
Club on March 14.
He credits his late father with setting an example for lending a
hand.
“Ever since I started following my dad around (as a boy), I just
thought that’s what we did,” he said.
One of Pfeil’s first tastes of community service came when he
was 5 years old and his parents solicited his help at the West Jefferson
Ox Roast, for which they were volunteers. He now serves as
president of the West Jefferson Community Association which puts
on the annual Labor Day weekend event. Each year he can be found
digging the pit to cook the meat, preparing and serving sandwiches,
organizing vendors, and serving as the “voice of the parade.”
A 1974 graduate of West Jefferson High School, Pfeil returned
to his alma mater as a teacher. He retired a few years ago after 29
West Jefferson resident Jeff
Pfeil was named the winner of
the 2019 Bell Ringer award.
years with the district. He still serves
as the announcer for West Jefferson
football games on Friday nights.
“Apparently, spending all his time
and energy serving the community’s
youth just wasn’t enough,” Kell said
before noting that Pfeil served as a
West Jefferson adult softball commissioner,
has spent 23 years coordinating
West Jefferson’s Christmas in the
Park event, is a freelance photographer
for the Madison Messenger, and
owns and operates a lawn care business
he started in 1982.
“Our award recipient sees the value
in the bigger picture of his community,”
Kell continued. “He dedicates
hours of time and effort serving as a
Jefferson Township trustee and a
Madison County Trustee Association member.”
Kell also thanked Pfeil for his efforts as a member of
Madison County Future Inc., the economic development
arm of the Chamber of Commerce.
“I think I speak for everyone here when I say that
we’re all thankful for the 5-year-old boy that humored
his parents by helping them volunteer for their community,
but even more so for the community
servant he’s become over the
years,” Kell said.
The Chamber also presented
awards to three organizations.
The Non-Profit Award went to Life-
Care Alliance which provides Meals-
On-Wheels and senior dining centers
to senior citizens and residents with
medical challenges. In 2018, the
Columbus-based non-profit provided
22,700 home-delivered meals to 180
clients and 4,100 congregate meals to
27 clients in Madison County.
The Retail/Service Award went to
First Energy for its service to residents
and businesses, support of local
economic development, and contributions
to non-profit organizations
throughout Madison County.
The Industrial Award went to Target Distribution
Center. Since opening a regional distribution center in
West Jefferson in 2004 and a food distribution center in
2014, the company has provided opportunities in Madison
County through job creation and community investment
in the form of grants and donations.
More options for Rockin’ on the Run’s 10th year
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Rockin’ on the Run turns 10 years old this year. To celebrate, organizers
are adding new features to the event, which is set for May
18 in London.
Traditionally, Rockin’ on the Run involves a 5-K run/walk, family-friendly
festival, and silent auction, with proceeds benefiting pediatric
brain tumor research. To date, the locally organized event
has raised more than $142,000.
“We’ve had a lot of people say they want to participate but that
they can’t do the 5K, so we’ve added a one-miler. We’ve also added
a kids’ loop,” said Ashley Winebrenner, Rockin’ on the Run vice
president.
Registration is open now for the 5K and 1-mile. The entry fee is
$25. A link can be found at www.rockinontherun.org. The kids’ loop
is free and participants can sign up the morning of the event. Entrants
in the 5K and 1-mile receive a finisher’s medal, t-shirt, and
swag bag; both races are timed. Entrants in the kids’ loop receive a
finisher’s certificate.
The races start and finish at St. Patrick School, 226 Elm St.,
London. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. the day of the event. Entertainment,
food, a bounce house, games, raffles and the auction
start at 8. Race time is set for 9 a.m. (Times will be updated once
final planning is complete. The kids’ loop is tentatively set to take
place prior to the main race.)
Additionally, organizers are changing up their t-shirt design contest,
inviting children of all ages to submit designs for the shirts
Run, 10th annual, for brain tumor awareness,
London, Ohio, May 18, 2019, 5K, 1
miler and kids’ loop, and the website address,
www.rockinontherun.org. The shirts
will be purple and printed with white ink.
Each child can submit up to two designs.
Designs must be submitted via email in
PDF form by midnight on March 27. For
more information, contact Johnda Beathard,
that will go to participants who are fighting a brain tumor or have Rockin’ on the Run president, at
fought a brain tumor and to their family members.
Students in kindergarten through 12th grade can submit designs.
They must include the following information: Rockin’ on the
johnda@rockinontherun.org. The event’s
board of directors will choose one design.
The winner will be contacted on March 29.
Sign up for first Service Day
By Andrew Garrett
Staff Writer
Many hands make light work, the old proverb goes, and the
United Way of Clark, Champaign & Madison Counties (UWCCMC)
is looking for as many hands as can be mustered for its Service Day
planned for April 26.
Service Day is a county-wide, one-day event that pairs volunteers
with area non-profit organizations for a variety of cleaning,
maintenance and repair projects, according to Gracie Hemphill,
UWCCMC’s director of strategic initiatives. Think of it as one big
day of spring cleaning happening simultaneously throughout the
county with neighbors helping neighbors.
The goal is for local businesses and organizations to recruit volunteers
from within their ranks and then sign up as a group, although
individuals are encouraged to participate, too, Hemphill
said. Volunteer registration is open through
April 22.
UWCCMC is accepting service projects
until April 15. Entities or organizations
looking to register a service project must be
non-profit to qualify. Projects already accepted
include: clearing invasive brush at
the Little Darby State Scenic Preserve, organized
by Friends of Madison County
Parks & Trails; Meals-On-Wheels delivery
through LifeCare Alliance; fence removal at
Loving Care Hospice; and mulching at Lon-
don city parks.
“This is a great opportunity for citizens
to show their pride by working in comradery
to improve their communities,” said Pat
Closser, London mayor and United Way
board member, “and I encourage everyone
to volunteer on this day.”
This is the first year for the event to take
place in Madison County, according to
Hemphill. It is the fourth year for Clark
County and the third for Champaign
County, she said.
Over the last four years, Clark County’s
Service Day has grown to include nearly 30
project sites and more than 500 hundred
volunteers. Hemphill said she would love to
see that kind of turnout and growth in
Madison County.
Those interested in Service Day volunteerism
or submitting a service project, or
merely finding out more about the event
and various service projects, may do so by
logging onto www.uwccmc.org/events and
scrolling down to “Madison County Service
Day.”
Crafting an effective cover letter
A strong cover letter may not
guarantee you land a good job,
but a poor cover letter may guarantee
you won't. On its own, an
effective cover letter can catch
the eye of hiring managers
tasked with finding worthy candidates
among stacks of applications,
while a poor cover letter
may ensure hiring managers
never even glance at an applicant's
resume.An effective cover
letter should be concise, conveying
an applicant's work history
and goals in a few paragraphs or
less.
The following are some additional
ways men and women can
craft effective cover letters:
• Address a specific person when
possible.
• State your purpose early on.
• Explain why you are a qualified
candidate.
• Exhibit some knowledge about
the company to which you're applying.
• Be cordial in your closing
An effective cover letter can go a
long way toward making a
strong first impression on a
prospective employer. Men and
women should look at their cover
letters as their first opportunities
to connect with a company
and write their letters accordingly.
NOW HIRING
How to get noticed in a crowded job market
Finding a new job is never an easy
task. That task grew even more difficult
over the last half decade,
when a struggling economy forced
many companies to lay off workers
and institute hiring freezes. As a result,
unemployment numbers rose,
and many out-of-work men and
women found themselves searching
for ways to stand out among a
crowded pool of applicants.
Standing out in a crowded job market
has always been tough, but
many professionals find it even
more difficult to get noticed now,
when many companies request
prospective employees apply for job
postings via the Internet. That
process can be frustrating, as even
the most qualified applicants can
easily get lost among the myriad of
workers all applying for the same
position. But as daunting as finding
a new job may seem to those looking
for work, there are ways to stand
out among the masses.
* Go the extra mile when sending
your application. Many online job
postings provide a link or an email
address where applicants can fill
out an application or send their resumes.
This is a necessary step, and
applicants should follow the directions
in the posting. But applicants
who really want to get noticed can
take the extra step of finding the
contact information for the company's
hiring manager and sending
their resume directly to that person's
email address. Include the
title of the position you're applying
for in the subject line of your email,
and cut and paste your cover letter
into the body of the email. In addition
to sending your email to the
company's hiring manager, consider
CC'ing the person who might be
your boss if you were to get the position.
* Tighten things up. Your resume
should reflect your work experience,
but you want to focus primarily on
the experience and skills that are
relevant to the position. You can list
past positions or internships you've
had, but keep the synopsis of those
positions brief if they bear little relevance
to the position for which
you're applying. The main focus of
your resume should be the things
you have done in the past that make
you the best candidate for this job.
The rate of pay for this position is $14.00/hr. to
$16.00/hr depending on experience. During snow
events, a $5/hr. differential will be added to regular
rate of pay. Employees who work over 40 hours in
a pay week will receive overtime. The core
working hours are 7:00am-3:30pm,
Monday-Friday. Transportation will be provided
from main shop located near Roberts Rd. & I-270.
Health and Dental Insurance, Life Insurance
$1,000 LANDSCAPE &
paid by the company. 80 Hours PTO after
Sign on
3 months and an additional
40 hours of PTO are available after 6 months.
Bonus
UTILITY CREW Responsibilities: Cut lawns using hand or power
mower, Trim & edge around walks, flower beds &
walls, using clippers & edging tools, May operate
walking type power mowers, snow blowers,
roto tillers or riding mowers, chain saws, hedge
trimmers & other hand-held power operated tools
to prune, cultivate, shovel, trim cut & dig, May be
asked to perform maintenance tasks, including
general carpentry; electrical, mechanical maintenance,
HVAC, ground maintenance, painting &
custodial duties as assigned.
Please send resumes to: christie.nitsch@sciotomanagementgroup.com
This is a Full-time seasonal position
(Spring, Summer, Fall) - with the potential to
move into a permanent position
This position requires that the employee must
successfully complete criminal history information
background check and drug screening and be able to
obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
JOB
EXPLOSION!!
STAFFING
Your Partner at Work
This might change as you apply for
various positions, but tailor each resume
to each specific position.
* Make your resume downloadfriendly.
Applying for positions but
getting little response despite your
qualifications? Chances are your resume
might not be downloadfriendly.
Bullet points and boxes
might look good to you, but if the
hiring manager on the receiving end
of your resume does not have the
same version of the program you're
using, that resume might look like
a scrambled mess by the time the
it's downloaded. In such instances
your resume is almost certain to end
up in the scrap heap, no matter how
qualified you might be. When uploading
your resume to a company
Web site or emailing it to a hiring
manager, choose a format they can
easily download. A PDF, for example,
is a format that's easy to download
and unlikely to scramble.
* Beware of hyperlinks. Adding hyperlinks
to a resume can be hit or
miss. When it's a hit, a hiring manager
can click on a link in your resume
and be taken directly to
samples of your work. However, if
you're asked to submit your resume
via an online application instead of
sending it directly to a hiring manager's
email address, then those
same hyperlinks might be relegating
your application to the trash bin
before it's ever seen. That's because
the database may be programmed
to associate any documents with hyperlinks
as spam, in which case the
hiring manager will never see your
application or resume. Hyperlinks
can be useful and help you stand
out, but only when they're employed
under the right circumstances.
* Include social media profiles.
More and more companies want employees
who are familiar with social
media, which can work to an applicants'
advantage or prove detrimental.
If you have been responsible
regarding your use of social media,
conducting yourself in a professional
matter and even benefitting
your existing employer, by all
means share these profiles with potential
employers. But if you have
traditionally used social media
purely as a social tool and not in a
professional manner, then it bears
little relevance to your job search
and likely won't help you stand out
for the right reasons.
Standing out in a crowded job is
rarely easy. But savvy professionals
can employ a few tricks of the trade
to stand out as they search for their
next jobs.
of economic ups and downs. Managing careers
amid such instability has been challenging
for many individuals, but
professionals looking for more security
can take steps to find careers that promise
more long-term stability.
Focusing a job search on industries that
have shown strong growth and the ability
to ride out waves of economic turmoil can
tip the odds in your favor. Certain industries
have better long-term employment
outlooks than others, and men and
women looking for more stability should
consider these industries when pondering
their next career moves.
Accounting
Thanks to ever-changing financial policies
and greater scrutiny placed on lending
practices and bookkeeping,
accounting jobs remain solid career
choices. Jobs in accounting can range
from entry-level to more advanced (and
more lucrative) positions requiring certification
or a secondary education.
Medicine
Financial health does not safeguard people
against illness, and health services
are needed regardless of the state of the
economy. That makes medical careers
some of the most coveted and stable
around. Healthcare professions can be lucrative,
medical imaging personnel and medical
laboratory technicians also are needed.
Computer Systems
Computer systems analysts and programming
Reconstruction resumes on I-70 in Madison County
The Ohio Department of Transportation
(ODOT) has resumed work on reconstruction
of a portion of I-70 in Madison County.
Effective March 18, I-70 between U.S.
Route 42 and the Franklin County line has
been reduced to two lanes in each direction
around the clock. Crews from the Ohio Department
of Transportation are installing
temporary pavement and building median
crossovers.
Once the crossovers are complete, the
plan is for I-70 eastbound traffic to cross
through the median onto the westbound
side. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained
obituaries
in each direction, but starting mid-April,
both directions of I-70 will be on the westbound
side of the road. This traffic pattern
is expected to be in place until November,
while crews work to rebuild the eastbound
lanes of I-70.
Since lanes are reduced, drivers should
expect some delays in the seven-mile work
zone, especially during peak travel times.
Next year, traffic will use the eastbound
lanes while crews reconstruct the westbound
side. The $50 million project is expected
to be complete in October 2020,
weather permitting.
It’s modern, it’s whimsical, and it’s
packed with positivity.
Jefferson Local Schools’ production of
“Seussical the Musical” hits the West Jefferson
High School stage for four performances
March 28-30.
“There are multiple great messages in
the show, including the idea that the way
you are is the best version of you for the
world,” said director Rachel Armas, “that
every type of person is important...and to
be grateful for all you have.”
In addition to the storyline, Armas
chose “Seussical” as the district’s spring
musical for the opportunities it offers student
actors.
“It features medium to large parts for
several people, so we can feature a larger
number of talented students,” she explained.
“It also lets the whole school community
participate. We are excited to
have students from the elementary, middle
and high schools involved.”
Two students are splitting the duties
of playing JoJo, the child whose imagination
is responsible for all the characters
that spring to life over the course of the
story. Sixth-grader Alexa Bogenrife plays
the part Thursday night and Saturday
night. Seventh-grader Jayden Davie does
the honors Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
Senior Nathaniel Dersom is putting
his three years of high school drama experience
to good use in the over-the-top
Gearing up for Jefferson Local Schools’ production of “Seussical the Musical” are:
(seated, from left) Nicole Evans as Gertrude McFuzz and Nick McGlothlin as Horton
the Elephant; (back row) Hannah Messer as the Sour Kangaroo, Loraine Stone as
Mayzie LaBird, Nathaniel Dersom as The Cat in the Hat, Wesley Miller as Mr. Mayor,
and Jayden Davie as JoJo.
West Jeff’s ‘Seussical’
packs positive punch
comedic role of The Cat in the Hat.
Senior Nicole Evans displays her
singing chops as Gertrude McFuzz, a bird
who is unhappy with her appearance but
learns to be content with who she is.
Junior Nicholas McGlothlin is taking
center stage for the first time in a leading
role, playing Horton, a super lovable, very
sincere elephant.
Senior Loraine Stone is the flashy, fun
Mayzie LaBird. Sophomore Wesley Miller
and senior Ivie-Jean Nicholas play well
together as Mr. Mayor and the first lady
of Whoville.
For the production staff, Armas is
joined by Jeff Gates, assistant director,
Danielle Fredette, choreographer, and
Jacob Boyer, rehearsal accompanist. This
is the fourth show the team has produced
together.
“We hope the community comes out
and sees our awesomely talented students,”
Armas said. “They are doing a
great job. It’s just such a fun show to
share with everybody.”
Show times are 6 p.m. March 28, 7
p.m. March 29, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
