he said.
“We have reduced costs on other
facilities before such as the South

and I can’t see why this cannot be

GLENN LIVINGSTONE has had a good
win over the $1m changing facility saga at
QE II Park (see page 1).
Livingstone went public before a hearings
panel convened to determine if they would
go ahead.
I suspect his views, and the public surprise and concern it
generated, played a part in the fact the project has gone back to the
drawing board.
The hearings panel has now requested city council staff look at
how costs can be cut.
A million bucks is an extravagant cost for the changing rooms,
particularly when more money needs to be poured into other
much needed projects in the eastern suburbs – like roads.
So good on Livingstone for going public.

Venue offered for Anzac Day service
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
RANNERDALE Veterans
Village has offered to hold an
Anzac Day ceremony in Upper
Riccarton due to the closure of a
historic library in the suburb.
But the long-standing Anzac
service organised by the Upper
Riccarton Memorial Library
committee still will not go
ahead.
Rannerdale Veterans Village
general manager Charmaine
Diver told Southern View it was
happy for the service to be held
at its spaces and has offered it to
the committee.
Last year the library service
was held at Rannerdale because
the library was closed in
October 2017 by the city council.
Memorial library chairwoman
Aynslie Walter previously told
Southern view it wouldn’t be
organising a separate event at
Rannerdale because it was quite
an exercise to close off part of
the building so there can be a
dawn service.
But Ms Diver said it is not
an exercise to close off part of
Rannerdale.
“We just open up the venue so
we are not here to facilitate,” she
said.
But Mrs Walter said it has now
been decided representatives
will go to the Anzac service
FRUSTRATION: Arthur Woods, Aynslie Walter, Mary Ibbetson, Keith Walter and Ailsa Smith
have previously protested against the closure Upper Riccarton Memorial Library.

organised by Rannerdale.
“It is far too late for me to
arrange another service . . . we
have already told people we are
not doing a service this year,”
she said.
The library was closed after
an engineering assessment
raised concerns over structural
strength. Members of the Upper
Riccarton Memorial Library
Committee have previously
opposed the closure of the
library.
Opened on March 19, 1919,
the library was the first of seven
war memorials to be built in
New Zealand. This year would
have marked 100 years since the
library was opened to
remember the men from the
district who gave their lives in
World War 1.
Since March last year,
volunteers have been operating
out of the annex of the building
at the library.

Womankind: New Zealand Women
Making a Difference
By Margie Thomson
A landmark book of profiles and portraits celebrating the successes
and diversity of New Zealand women across many spheres - politics,
arts, science, community development, business innovation and
health.
These leaders share their views on what it’s like to be a woman
in New Zealand today- the contributions they are most proud of,
challenges they have faced and still face, dreams they have and
goals for the role of New Zealand women. The range of women
covers diverse fields, ages and ethnic backgrounds - from household
names like Jacinda Ardern and Helen Clark, Malvina Major and
Portia Woodman, to unsung heroines of the suburbs - a Kiwi
Samoan scientist, the first Indian-born female police officer, and a
maker of coffins!
These more than 50 New Zealand women have set out to make a
difference in the world, whether that be on a global stage, or in their
local communities.
18th Abduction (Women’s Murder Club 18)
By James Patterson
Three missing women. Two impossible cases. One determined
detective.
When three teachers disappear without a trace, Sergeant Lindsay
Boxer takes the lead in the investigation. But with no clues and no
suspects, the odds of finding the women alive are getting slimmer
by the second.
Under pressure at work, Lindsay needs support at home. But her
husband Joe is drawn into an encounter with a woman who’s
seen a ghost - a notorious war criminal from her Eastern European
home country, walking the streets of San Francisco.
When Joe’s informant disappears, the two investigations collide.
It will take the combined skills of Lindsay, Joe and the entire
Women’s Murder Club to protect their city, and themselves, from a
monster.
The Gut-friendly Cookbook
delicious low FOdMAP, gluten-free, allergyfriendly
recipes for a happy tummy
By Alana Scott
If you have been prescribed a low-FODMAP diet, it can be really
difficult to work out what you can eat. That’s what Alana Scott found
when she was diagnosed with allergies, coeliac disease and irritable
bowel syndrome. Her frustration at finding the right things to eat led
to her developing a successful website and a range of flavoursome
recipes using low-FODMAP and gluten-free ingredients. She has all
her recipes reviewed by a FODMAP trained registered dietitian, and
her many followers have been asking for the best ones to be gathered into a book, so here it is!
Delicious dinners, breakfasts, lunches and snacks, plus sweet treats and plenty of easy-to-read
background information on FODMAPS, a shopping guide, and how to change your eating through
the whole cycle of the low-FODMAP journey. And in case you are wondering, FODMAP is an acronym
that represents a group of fermentable sugars (Fermentable Oligo-saccharides, Disaccharides,
Monosaccharides and Polyols - short-chain carbohydrates) that are found in a wide range of foods
and can trigger unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms in some people. Also approved by Allergy NZ.
KIDS BOOKS
Trafficked: My Story of Surviving, escaping,
and Transcending Abduction into Prostitution
by Sophie Hayes
The haunting, unforgettable memoir that took the UK by storm,
Trafficked is a gripping first-hand account of a young woman who
survived the horrors of human trafficking.
Sophie Hayes, a young, educated English woman, was spending
an idyllic weekend in Italy with her seemingly charming boyfriend.
But the day of her return home, he made it clear she wasn’t going
anywhere. Punching and shouting at her, he threatened to kill her
adored younger brothers if she didn’t cooperate to help him pay off
hundreds of thousands of dollars he’d racked up in debts.
Over the next six months, Sophie is forced to work as a prostitute
in a country where she didn’t speak the language, nobody knows
her whereabouts, and escape seems impossible. She struggles to survive, constantly at the mercy
of her boyfriend’s violent moods and living in fear of being killed by any of her customers. When a
life-threatening illness lands her in the hospital, Sophie has a chance to phone her mother and escape
if her boyfriend doesn’t get to her first.
Chilling and captivating, Trafficked is one of the first memoirs to present a stunning personal look at
the criminal human sex trafficking trade and bring this disturbingly widespread abuse to light.

A common bond of being human
In the wake of the
Christchurch tragedy on
March 15, city councillor
Yani Johanson turns back
to the clock to an opinion
piece he wrote two years
ago about the value of
diversity in our society
At a time when the world is
coming closer together through
cheaper long distance travel
and greater connectivity via the
internet, it feels like there is more
conflict and chaos than ever
before.
Whether it’s the huge number
of refugees fleeing war zones or
the fear-based politics of Donald
Trump and Brexit, it is a time of
great concern for where we are
heading as humans.
As such, I believe we have to
ask ourselves why is this happening?
And, more importantly,
how can we stop this from happening?
In my role as city councillor,
I had the privilege of being
involved in two positive things to
address this.
First, at the city council we
have signed off on a multicultural
strategy, which recognises
“the council has a leadership role
in making Christchurch a city
where diversity is welcomed and
celebrated.”
This strategy has been long
CONNECTION: Linwood Ward city councillor Yani Johanson
with Mohamed Jamma, a survivor of the mosque attacks.
overdue and is a fantastic start on
a journey towards being a more
inclusive place.
Second, I was asked to speak
at the opening of the Friendship
Force national conference.
Friendship Force is a voluntary
group with mission values including
mutual respect, cultural
diversity, cultural exploration
and service.
Its members do this by opening
their homes and hearts to
host visitors from other cities and
countries throughout the world.
They have done an amazing job
bringing people to our city even
after the devastating impact of
the earthquakes.
The work they do and the work
the city council has done on the
multicultural strategy is based on
a simple premise that we all have
a common bond of being human
and that we all deserve to be
treated with dignity and respect.
In my view, when people are
afraid of the unknown, scared of
difference or lacking understanding,
I believe the world is fundamentally
a worse off place to live.
And yet, when we provide
opportunities for dialogue and
communication, for living and
learning and for understanding
and sharing, we are creating a
better world, a better country
and a better city.
In essence, we are creating a
community that celebrates and
cherishes difference rather than
being scared of it.
Following on from the terror
attack, I thought it was timely to
reflect on this soapbox article.
My connections to the attack
were two-fold. As a witness when
it ended, driving past at the same
time police were apprehending
the suspect, and as Linwood
Ward city councillor where the
Linwood Mosque is, it has been
both heart-breaking to experience
what took place and yet
heart-warming to see the community
response.
There is no place for hate
here or anywhere. Kia kaha
Christchurch stay strong.

QE II toilet costs
could be slashed
•From page 1
Cr Livingstone previously said a
house could be built for $350,000
so he couldn’t understand why
a toilet block would cost almost
triple that.
However, city council head of
recreation, sports and events Nigel
Cox said the $1 million budgeted
for the toilet and changing room
block had been an estimate.
The building would have four
changing rooms with showers and
toilets, a referees’ changing room,
storage, public toilets, provision of
services and landscaping including
paving, vegetation, seating, a drinking
fountain and cycle stands.
It is part of the $12 million draft
QE II Park Master Plan.
The first phase of the plan includes
a new playground featuring
a sandpit with a digger and buried
“fossils,” a basket swing, wooden
horses and a tube slide.
In a nod to the 1974 Commonwealth
Games held at QE II, two
running tracks have been recommended
for the area, along with a
four square court and podium.
Upgraded fitness stations are
also in the draft plan, along with
a disc golf course and adventure
nature trail.
It was finalised by the hearings
panel and will be approved by
the city council before planning
begins in July.

Academic excellence
continues
Yet again, our Cashmere High
School national qualification
(NCEA) results continue to be well
above the national and top decile
school averages, against whom we
benchmark ourselves.
These results are particularly
impressive considering some of
the property disruptions we’ve
experienced over the past couple
of years. It is also wonderful to see
that our students are not simply
“passing” but that almost two
thirds of our students gain their
NCEA qualifications with a Merit or
Excellence Endorsement.
These consistently excellent results
are the outcome of our hard working
and dedicated teachers and students
working so positively together.
Student leaders for 2019
Cashmere High School’s team, comprising Maddie Carter, Polly Daniels, Arabella Lay, Isla McLarin
and Elizabeth Milne, won the New Zealand Readers’ Cup – the national trophy for Year 9 reading
comprehension. This national competition is a chance for Year 9 students to read a pre-selected
list of books and pit their comprehension and memory skills against other teams to win regional
and national prizes. Cashmere High School won our Aoraki regional event, and went on to win the
National event against four other schools, one from each major region.
Council planning events for year
Our Student Council annual
weekend camp at Boyle
River is always a great team
building opportunity for our
young leaders.
Planning is already under
way for a range of studentled
activities including
fundraising for “Shave for a
Cure”, our competitive Inter-
House Events, and projects
around the school such as
our new mural and seating
area.
Also planned is work in the
wider community undertaken
by our own Cashmere
Volunteer Army.

Property update
• Our new specialist Science teaching and
learning space was formally opened (above)
at the start of this year by two former long
serving staff, Murray Allison and Anne
Mitchell, and blessed by our Kaumatua Henare
Edwards. This stunning extension, with seven
new classrooms, breakout spaces and staff
work areas, is part of our school’s postearthquake
Christchurch Schools Rebuild
(CSR) programme.
• The new school Performing Arts Centre
(above right) is due for completion in July, and
will provide a spectacular 800-seat venue for
our school music and drama performances,
and school productions.
• Also as part of the school’s post-earthquake
property works, our tennis and netball courts
(below) are being transformed with new
fencing, asphalt and artificial turf surfaces.
Damaged in the earthquakes, and overdue
for resurfacing our Board of Trustees took
the initiative to fund this refurbishment work
without Ministry resourcing.
2020 Prospectus and scholarship application forms will be available.

Affordable family
photographs to treasure
Beautiful photography made affordable
is what Blue Bird Photography offers
all its clients, says portrait and property
photographer Sarah Crozier, who started her
business to help families capture precious
moments in a budget-friendly way.
Her advice has always been, “Just do it,
you never get this time back,” and Blue Bird
Photography’s pricing structure makes it
easy to do just that, she says.
Whether it is just one or two key images
or a whole album-full you require, Sarah
and her team will work alongside you from
their Colombo Street studio to help you get
exactly what you want.
All images are supplied digitally, so you are

able to pick your images from a professionally
edited online gallery, while having digital
files also means you can choose how to
use them. Blue Bird Photography also
offers a canvas printing service.
In order to capture everyone’s
personality, Sarah prefers to take a
relaxed approach, rather than having
her subjects in stiff, staged poses, and her
friendly approach quickly puts people of
all ages at ease.
Family photography isn’t her only area of
expertise, however. If you are selling your
house or setting up an airbnb, Sarah offers
packages for property photography. She
is also sought after for business headshots
for websites and promotional material. In
fact, if you need high-quality images of
any subject, she will do it you.
Prices start at just $20 for a Happy
Snappy Tuesdays shoot with a variety of
packages and layby services available too.
To book your shoot you can phone
the studio on 365 0575, go to the website

BACK or NECK PAIN?
After twelve years in New
Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have
now established a long term
track record with thousands of
people throughout New
Zealand.
Inversion New Zealand was
started by Dave and Nancy Hare,
Dave had suffered over twenty
years of back pain from Degenerated
Discs and had basically
given up and decided to just live
with it. To him surgery was never
an option as long as he still
could walk, there was hope.
“While on an overseas trip I
discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups
for the first time, when I tried it,
the pain completely
disappeared and I was pain free
for about 30 minutes. I never
would have believed it would fix
me completely as specialists had
told me it was irreversible, but I
now knew I had a place to go
every time I wanted some
welcome relief”.
To my surprise the more I used
the table the longer the pain
stayed away, until after nearly
three months the pain was
completely gone, after spending
large amounts of money on
everything I could find I finally
had found something that
worked and it was something I
had never heard of sorting it out
for me in a very short period of
time.
Real Hope For Long Term Sufferers
Once I was sure it really worked
I decided to introduce Teeter
into New Zealand to help
spread awareness of the one
thing that truly helped me.
Over the years I have helped
tens of thousands of people in
New Zealand get some serious
relief and have seen results in
not only backs, but necks, hips,
knees, posture, circulation and
lots more.
The results from what inversion
does is nothing short of miraculous
in areas we never thought
possible, I believe there is a
place for these in every single
home regardless of if you have
back issues or not.
We have introduced them into a
number of schools which are
using them for their special
needs children, the blood to the
brain helps these kids and the
results are excellent. What this
means for the aging population
is that it helps maintain the
health of the brain as we all get
older.
I would not have believed the
results had I not tried it for
myself, and I would still be
suffering to this day. This is why
we travel the country showing
people and letting them see for
themselves how great it is and
how life can be once your pain
free again
IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW
THE TEETER TABLE WORKS
Discs: It uses gravity to apply traction,
the traction gently opens the discs and as
they open up they create suction, this
suction draws fluid from the surrounding
tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating
them. This is the key! Discs do not have
their own blood supply, they rely on trans
fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to
keep them healthy and hydrated and over
the years as discs get thinner with age, they
lose the ability to take on fluid (just like
squeezing a sponge) and they start to
de-hydrate.
De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are
harder, more prone to injury, they interfere
with nerve roots creating pain and
ultimately the de-hydration causes degen
eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly
and gently brings the hydration back into
the discs, plumping them up. It separates
the nerve roots far more effectively and
returns quality of life
Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when
muscles are stressed they become tight
which restricts the flow of blood and lymph
through the muscles so toxins build up,
Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the
muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle
rocking motion that stimulates circulation
and encourages blood flow through the
muscles, which clears the lactic acid into
your lymph system where it stimulates
lymph flow and deals with it. Most people
with serious neck issues see a large
improvement after only one treatment.
Frank Harwood (84 at time of picture) using his Teeter, Frank’s
been Inverting for over eleven years and has found it keeps him
young
Posture: Poor posture is one f the
major cases of pain and is a major contributor
to the deterioration of the body with
age. A difference in leg length causes most
of the hip and knee issues, as they continue
to place uneven loads on the joints;
similar to the wheels out of alignment on
your car.
Trying to correct posture is extremely
difficult due to muscle memory, as it
constantly pulls the muscles back to where
they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more
on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up
and eventually come back into alignment,
using the table daily, does not allow the
muscle memory to pull them back out of
alignment and slowly the muscles start to
lose their memory and go with the flow,
allowing the body to come back into
correct posture. Then using the table once a
day will ensure it is kept there.
This is pure logic, if a machine is out of
alignment it does not last long, the only
difference between the body and a
machine is that the body is constantly
repairing itself, however if the wear and
tear on the body is greater than the body’s
ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline.
The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its
decline and allows the body to repair itself,
resulting in a far healthier life.
If you are serious about investing in your
health and really sorting your issues out,
come see us at one of our local roadshows,
you have nothing to lose and chances are, a
lot to gain.
Here in New Zealand, Dr Giresh Kanji, is
one of the countries most respected Pain
Specialists. Dr Kanji has been using Teeters in
his clinics for the past 6 years and has
discovered how effective traction is especially
on disc issue.
Dr Kanji is the author of "Fix Your Back" and
"Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine",
both books are in most bookstores.
Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the
disc is the most likely source of low back pain
and Inversion showed the best results of all
the trials conducted. Three studies showed a
60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75%
reduction in surgery for people with disc
prolapse.
Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best
method to manage back pain, he has
personally been using the Teeter Inversion
tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter
Inversion tables at both of his clinics in
Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and
has had such success that he is now conducting
New Zealand’s largest study on Inversion
Therapy. In his own words, "these things are
gold and inversion should be a first line
treatment for low back pain”.

The Bodyfix secreT exposed
It’s the harmonious blend of factors at Bodyfix
that’s got everyone talking.
Owner Moana Williams explains that Bodyfix is a
motivational ‘family’ environment for people to
relish in and it is clear that is a social haven where
members come to celebrate their daily exercise fix.
With a relaxed, friendly vibe and a strong
community focus, the Bodyfix team take a
fresh approach to health and fitness. “This is a
welcoming, supportive place to work out, no matter
how fit or unfit you feel you are,” says owner, Moana
Williams. “We encourage people to take a healthy
approach to feeling fit, healthy and happy. It’s not
just about weight loss – it comes from within.”
This unique gym specialises in group exercise
classes, and the expert trainers offer a wealth of
industry experience. “We have a really balanced
team, who are all highly knowledgeable in their own
set of niche markets,” she says. “There’s a real fun,
family feel here and we offer a personal touch. And
the vibe attracts the tribe – likeminded people refer
their friends, so the membership grows naturally.”
Bodyfix has supported a range of charities over the
years by raising money through different events.
“Exercising is also about mental health – a clear
mind is a remedy for most things; which is why we
focus on supporting mental health charities. It’s
a great way to encourage the community to get
moving.”
We regularly hold educational events, fundraisers
and offer our space to groups to support our
community. We are much more than just a gym and
believe that our role goes far beyond exercise.
