I’ve had over 70,000 pricks… of the medical
kind. This is my chance to set the record straight
about Type 1 diabetics like me.
PRICKS GOES ON THE ROAD...
Darlington actress, Jade Byrne,
heads off on a special UK tour this
year as Pricks, a medical play (with
a difference) about Type 1 Diabetes,
takes in a dozen dates from Hexham to
Exeter and a few in-between.
At 33-years-old Jade has been an actress
for nine years (appearing in the likes of
Inspector George Gently, Casualty and
Mount Pleasant), and a Type 1 diabetic
for the past 30 (just ask her stage
companion, Dennis the Menace, he’s
been there from the beginning).
An urgent, yet funny, new, one-woman
show sees Jade tell a warm, engaging
and uplifting story with poetry, original
soundscape about families and learning
to care for others better.
Success has been so overwhelming that
for one that made its debut outing at
last year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival,
was lauded over by Peter Lathan of
the British Theatre Guide, honouring
Jade’s personal idiom as being the ‘Best Solo Show’ of
2018 after he witnessed it at the Alphabetti Theatre,
Newcastle.
Looking ahead to the tour Jade said: “I want everyone to
experience Pricks and be affected by it, in a good way.
“I want to be able to educate yet entertain people about
what it (Type 1 Diabetes) is and to be able to take this as
far as possible.
“I love seeing the reaction from the audience at shows
and it is a good night out.
“It’s funny, but will make a lot of people cry, happy tears
as it’s everything I’d like myself from a theatre show.”
Beginning on April 25 Jade will take in Cheltenham,
Leeds, Darlington, Halifax, Hexham, Exeter, Hemel
Hempstead, Newcastle, Harrogate, Derby, and Doncaster
before finishing at the Pulse Festival, Ipswich, on June 4.
Check out my new
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… OK, so firstly a reminder
about me. I’m Zena (Zee for short), I’m 45, a mother and a grandmother.
Nothing makes you feel more spring
like than crisp early mornings and
sunshine. I’m in love with
spring, it’s the promise of
new beginnings, there’s
chocolate, my birthday (I’m
46 this year) plus the lighter
evenings.
This month, I’ve been and
had my hair cut at Vanity
Eight in BSE and have
revisited my Mod roots,
where I have to say I’m
happiest! I will go lighter for
summer so watch this space (hair)! I love it.
Now my fashion insiders who attended
some of the blogger press events over
the winter for SS19 tell me that colour is
everything this season.
So, as I always, say go big
or go small it’s up to you. I
personally love block colour
and mixing patterns. This it all
depends where your comfort
level is.
My favourite brands - ZARA
and ASOS - have
everything you need to
add to your wardrobe. I’m
also loving this seasons
MUST HAVE colour which
is PURPLE!
I’m a fan of lavender
colours and light pastels
so I’m definitely going to be adding some of
this colour palette into my spring and summer
wardrobe.
Accessories are always a win so take
Suffolk Singer Debuts with
Jamiroquai Drummer...
like going to therapy – but the microphone was the
therapist. It was very cathartic.
“I had originally spoken to Nick about creating music
for a play I had written, but as soon as we got into the
studio, Game of Blame was born.
A Suffolk musician has teamed up with
a Jamiroquai star and released her first
single.
Charlie Emmeline, who grew up in Bury St Edmunds,
had previously studied musical theatre at prestigious
drama school, Mountview Academy.
Charlie has since been working very closely with Nick
van Gelder, who was a drummer for the accoladewinning
British band Jamiroquai in the 1990s.
The pair have worked together on the debut single,
Game of Blame, which is now available for download
on Spotify and iTunes.
The single was written after Charlie had experienced
a deep bout of depression while working in London
as an actress.
The pair have also worked on a music video which has
been released with the single.
“We’ve had an amazing time creating the video for it
as well and we’re thrilled to have released it with the
single this week.
“This isn’t your typical three-minute Ariana Grande
song - I can’t wait to see the response and I’m excited
to have people listening to and enjoying my music.”
While at Mountview, Charlie was selected from
hundreds of students to be mentored by musical
theatre superstar Elaine Paige OBE.
“I was so convinced Elaine Page wouldn’t pick me out
of all those who auditioned.” Charlie says.
“I just did what I love to do most - sing. I’m so
immensely grateful to have had her expertise so early
on in my career.
“I’ve worked with some really talented individuals so
far and it’s definitely reiterated that music is what I
want to do for the rest of my life.
“I am inspired by anyone who creates a long-term
career from being an artist. It is no mean feat.”
On experience, Charlie said: “Creating the music was
THE ART OF:
knitting
A PASTIME MAKING A
COME BACK...
Knitting is back in fashion and
a number of studies in recent
years have shown that knitting is
more than craft.
Results of a survey of over
3,500 knitters worldwide,
published in the British Journal
of Occupational Therapy,
concluded that “Knitting has
significant psychological and
social benefits, which can
contribute to wellbeing and
quality of life.”
The research shows that the
act of knitting can distract
from chronic pain, lower blood
pressure, reduce depression and
anxiety, and even slow the onset
of dementia. Because knitting
is both process and productoriented,
crafters benefit
from both the repetitive
nature of the task, and
the satisfaction of
completing the
task.
The repetitive
movements
are said to
induce a
meditative-like calm, distracting
knitters from their symptoms,
while those who join charities
and form groups benefit from
these effective social support
networks.
In days gone by, knitting was a
more functional activity - people
made the clothes they or their
family needed to wear, these
days it has evolved into a more
social pastime.
WeddingAngel
Tips for a busy bride...
BY LISA MARIE SMITH
Planning a wedding
can be a stressful and
time-consuming affair,
and it can get worse if
you’re holding a fulltime
job.
Here are my top tips on how
to manage your time well for
your dream celebrations.
1. SET A DATE...
Once he’s put a ring on it and
the excitement’s settled down,
it’s time to get back to reality.
One of the first things to
confirm, is when you’ll actually
be wed. If, like most of us, you’ve got a full-time job and
deadlines to deal with, you should let your boss know.
A tip: If you’re not in a rush to tie the knot, it’s best if
you can give yourself about a year and after to plan the
wedding.
2. KNOW WHAT YOU WANT...
With all the pretty wedding inspo pictures out there, it’s
hard not to want the biggest, prettiest, most romantic
wedding of the year. Instead, discuss your priorities with
your fiance, and pick the ones that matter to you most.
Once you’ve got a focus, it’s easier to proceed from
there.
3. PLAN WELL...
Be prepared for the busiest times, which tend to
happen just after your engagement and the few days
(or months) leading up to the wedding. And at times,
you’ll find yourself having nothing to do in between. If
possible, try not to take breaks that are too long, for you
might find yourself scrambling to finish everything at the
last minute.
20

WEDDING
APRIL 2019 APRIL | 2019 ISSUE | ISSUE #78 | #78 WEDDING
4. SKIP THE DIY...
If you’ve never tried major projects,
now’s not the time to begin.
Instead, pick a few small projects to
work on, and leave the rest to the
professionals, or buy.
5. HELP AT HAND...
Many hands make light work, and
there’s no shame in asking for
assistance. If your fiance’s not as
involved as you’d like him to be, tell
him.
6. LOOK TO FORUMS FOR
ADVICE...
If you’re the first bride amongst your
friends and family to get married, just
google, or head to wedding forums
to check what other brides have
done.
7. GET ORGANIZED...
Keep all your wedding-related
documents in one place – in a Google
sheet, Pinterest board, notebook or
a folder. What should go in: Your todo
lists, receipts, brochures, colour
swatches, invitation samples, images,
and so on.
8. LET IT GO...
While having a focus is good, don’t
get too fixated on the things that
may not work out according to plan.
Instead, leave it and try to come up
with something that fits. Prepare a
2nd, 3rd and even 4th option that
will probably work out just as well in
the end.
Until next time...
about their
#78
Bananarama’s Sara Dallin and Keren
Woodward celebrate the group’s 36th
anniversary and their achievements
speak for themselves.
Two Band Aid appearances, an entry in the
Guinness Book of World Records as the most
successful female band worldwide with the
most charting singles, many of which were
international hits, four hitting the US Billboard
Top 10 including a No.1 with Venus.
To date the duo have had 32 Top 40 UK hits.
They have released 10 albums and sold 30 million
records.
Bananarama formed in London
in the early 80s, Sara Dallin
and Keren Woodward
had been living in the
YWCA which was
about to close
so were looking
for somewhere
cheap to live on a
students wage.
After a chance
meeting with
Paul Cook (ex
Sex Pistols) at the
club Studio 21 their
problem was solved,
he offered the pair
a room above the Sex
Pistols old rehearsal
space in the legendary
Denmark St. Charing Cross.
The walls were covered with Johnny
Rotten’s drawings of Sid and Nancy and Dallin
and Woodward added their own names to the
mural . The 17th century townhouse is now a
Grade II listed building.
Most recently, Bananarama have announced the
release of the their 11th studio album In Stereo
due out 19th April 2019.
For the past three decades, Sara Dallin and
Keren Woodward have been one of pop’s most
influential and revered groups.
Their hit packed career happened because they
were the mould-breakers. Sometimes reminders
of pop genius come in the slightest of touches,
the subtlest of triggers. In Stereo, their upcoming
11th studio album, is full of them.
We speak to Sara about their new album and
upcoming performance at this years Newmarket
Nights...
OVER THE PAST THREE DECADES, YOU HAVE
BECOME ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL
AND PIONEERING GROUPS IN THE INDUSTRY,
DID YOU THINK YOU’D STILL BE AROUND
TODAY?
No, I was 18 when I started, I just
left college. I was in the music
world, going to clubs. Keren
and I lived above the Sex
Pistols’ rehearsal room.
The ex band members
used to have another
group and we used
to sing backing
vocals with
them. Then I met
Siobhan and we
just decided to
put the group
together.
I think we were
signed as a novelty
act because there
weren’t a great deal
of girl bands around,
well there weren’t any to
my knowledge.
They signed us and we had a hit, I don’t
think they quite knew why but they didn’t
interfere with what we were doing so we wrote
our own material, wrote our own songs, and the
hits just kept coming so they left us to it.
Being in my 50s now, it does seem like such a
huge, long career for Karen and myself. I didn’t
think it would be that long but it’s amazing.
WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
I guess you could ask that of any group really
that’s still going. It’s something I enjoy, I always
#78
loved writing, I trained to be a journalist because
I loved writing, I wrote books, ended up writing
songs.
Keren and I have been friends since we were
children so it’s like travelling the world with your
best friend. I think we write great pop songs, we
just appealed across the board really, I think young
girls really liked us because they saw something
they have never necessarily seen before.
ARE THERE ANY GROUPS THAT YOU’RE REALLY
LOVING AT THE MOMENT, OR ANY GIRL BANDS
THAT REMIND YOU OF BANANARAMA’S EARLY
DAYS?
Most girl bands in the charts have come from
reality shows, which isn’t a bad thing, I think Little
Mix are great, great vocals, great voices.
I don’t really know any other girl groups that were
quite like us. We formed our own group, had this
friendship, it was very different in the 80s.
YOUR DEBUT ALBUM DEEP SEA SKIVING WAS
RELEASED IN 1983 AND YOU’VE RELEASED
AN AMAZING 9 ALBUMS SINCE THEN. HOW
DO YOU THINK YOUR SOUND AND STYLE HAS
DEVELOPED FROM ALBUM TO ALBUM?
Keren and I are about to release our 11th studio
album, so it’s obviously changed; we were
teenagers when we started, we’ve been a duo for
sort of 35 years, our music just evolved.
There are different kinds of technology now; we
write with a friend of ours in a studio in his house,
it’s just very different. It’s great.
SIOBHAN FAHAY RE-JOINED THE BAND FOR
A REUNION TOUR IN 2017, WHAT WAS IT LIKE
GETTING THE GANG BACK TOGETHER AND
BEING A TRIO AGAIN?
We asked Siobhan if she’d like to do a one off UK
tour, it was fun.
She never toured with us, she left in 1988, and 1989
we went on a world tour so she never experienced
that kind of thing so it was really good.
IN STEREO, YOUR 11TH STUDIO ALBUM, IS DUE
FOR RELEASE NEXT MONTH, MAKING IT 10
YEARS SINCE YOUR LAST ALBUM, VIVA. WHAT
INSPIRED YOU TO FINALLY GET BACK IN THE
STUDIO?
We were always in the studio, always writing
songs, released EP’s, Christmas singles.
We concentrated on touring for the past 15 years
with our band, going all over the world. I really
enjoyed touring because we didn’t get to do
enough of it in the 80s.
We felt the fans were asking for an album so we
just collected all our songs and thought let’s put
an album out. It seemed like the right time.
HAVE YOU FOUND THAT YOUR APPROACH
TO SONG-WRITING AND RECORDING HAS
CHANGED DRASTICALLY OVER THE YEARS?
No, not really. I’ve always loved writing songs, it’s
just a great process.
I love being able to write in my house, sitting at
the kitchen table and then suddenly you’d be in
the studio doing the final track, remembering
where it came from, it’s very satisfying.
HAVING HAD 32 TOP 40 UK SINGLES, SOLD OUT
MULTIPLE TOURS, AND RELEASED 10 ALBUMS,
DID YOU FEEL ANY PRESSURE WHEN MAKING
IN STEREO?
No, it’s such an enjoyable process. It doesn’t really
matter to me whether it was 5 years ago or 10
years ago, writing is just something I really enjoy
doing.
So I don’t think you feel the pressure, back in the
80s you’re waiting for chart positions, TV shows,
and radio plays and now it’s just really enjoyable. I
don’t feel any sort of pressure or competition.
FOR THE RELEASE OF THE NEW ALBUM,
YOU’RE PLAYING SMALL AND INTIMATE
VENUES, WHY IS THAT?
It’s the way things are done now. It’s like a fan
show, Kylie’s done it, loads of people have done
it, but we’re going to do a Q&A so ours is quite
different.
We’re going to play songs from the new album,
and then tracks that people have never heard
before live, so it’s going to be a mixture of songs.
It should be a good evening.
WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS THE MOST MEMORABLE
MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER?
There’s loads really: first starting out, making a
demo, getting your first play on the radio, having
our first top 10 in America. Loads of things.
Particularly now, Keren and I are off touring, it’s
great fun.
YOU’VE PLAYED BAND AID TWICE, AND WERE
PART OF THE ORIGINAL LINE UP, HOW WAS IT?
I’m not sure we knew what was going to be
happening that day; we got a call from Bob
Geldoff saying “can you come to the studio, we’re
going to record a song for a charity”.
We didn’t really know what was going on, but as
we arrived we saw George Michael, Bono, and it
escalated into all these celebrities in one room,
which is quite amazing, but the cause itself was
an amazing thing to be part of.
YOU’RE PLAYING NEWMARKET RACECOURSE
IN AUGUST, HAVE YOU PLAYED AT A
RACECOURSE BEFORE?
Yes, we’ve played quite a few racecourse’s, they’re
always really good fun. Looking forward to it.
WHAT CAN FANS THAT HAVE NEVER SEEN YOU
LIVE BEFORE EXPECT FROM THE SHOW? ANY
SURPRISES IN STORE?
HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT CHOOSING YOUR
HORSE?
Just if we liked the name.
FINALLY, AFTER NEWMARKET, WHAT ARE
YOUR PLANS FOR THE REST OF 2019?
It’s festival season so we have loads of UK
Festivals, a couple European ones, then we’re
playing Summer Sonic in Japan, which is a huge
festival in Tokyo with 50,000 people, and that’s
in August.
In Stereo will be released 19th April 2019,
on CD, Digital and Vinyl.
Well obviously we’ve got the new single out,
we’re playing that.
Possibly other stuff from the new album, the
classic hits, some from the 80s, the 90s, a mixture
of new and old stuff. It should be fun.
HAVE YOU EVER PLACED A BET ON A HORSE,
AT A RACETRACK, OR THE GRAND NATIONAL.
ETC. ?
Yes I have. We used to go with George Michael to
the races, that was always really great fun.
Not quite sure I knew what I was doing but I know
people placed bets for us. It was great fun.
Trying to Lose Weight… how’s it Going?
According to a survey of 2000 people,
54% of New Year resolutions in 2019
were to lose weight!
Did you have the best intentions to lose
weight at the start of the year? How’s that
going? If you abandoned the diet as the
weeks went by, it might help to know that
only 2-5% of people who diet will lose weight
and keep it off. So, give yourself a break! But
why don’t diets work?
Why Don’t Diets Work?
Diets are a short-term fix. Weight loss or gain
simply comes down to the calories you eat,
as I’m sure you are aware; eat more calories
than you use, you will gain weight, eat less
calories than you use, you will lose weight.
The problem is, once you finish the diet, the
weight comes back because you still have the
same habits that contributed to the weight
gain in the first place.
How do I Lose Weight if I don’t
Diet?
Another reason why diets have a poor success
rate is down to the fact that most of us eat for
many more reasons than hunger.
Have you ever noticed how your mood, good
or bad, can have you raiding the cupboard or
fridge in search of a particular type of food?
This is known as emotional eating; where you
eat to fulfill an emotional need rather than a
biological one.
If you would like to lose weight, and keep
the weight off, a good place to start is by
changing the relationship you have with
food. This can be done using Cognitive
Hypnotherapy. If you would like to find out
how I can help you lose weight and keep
that weight off, get in touch today for a free
telephone consultation.
NEW FEATURE
Jacqui Sinclair
Yoga Do’s and Dont’s
Jacqui Sinclair has been
teaching yoga in the Bury St
Edmunds area for ‘ages’ and is
keen to promote the benefits of
a regular practice to all.
This monthly piece will feature
basic answers to some of the
many YOGA comments and
questions that get asked by
beginners and pre-beginners
alike!
One comment often heard is ‘ I
am not flexible enough for yoga’.
Flexibility is only one part of
many areas of exploration within
a yoga practice. For many of
us, it feels like the most obvious
‘restriction’ that we encounter
when we first go to a class.
Lacking flexibility can feel like
the practice is an impossible feat
of trying to move with the hand
brake on. Looking simply at just
the biomechanical objectives
of our yoga practice, it would
be best summarised as to bring
balance in the body between
stability and flexibility – working
on optimum integration of both,
for our own individual anatomy.
All aspects of the practice
are worked on gradually,
incrementally and progressively.
If we consider the number
of years we have
been ‘doing that life
stuff’ that we do, with
all the repetitive patterns of
movement and behaviours,
it would be unrealistic to
expect to reverse that in a few
classes. Anatomically we are
all very different, so optimum
flexibility for you may well be
significantly different from
the person on the mat next to
you. Props (blocks, cushions
etc) can assist in your practice
being safe and progressive,
and using them can indicate an
advanced practice technique (as
it shows awareness) rather than
feeling like using stabilisers on
a bike….your practice can feel
challenging, but it shouldn’t feel
like a battle with your own body.
Flexibility is best approached
with an attitude of working with
the body gradually to create
space, rather than imposing a
stretch on the body to push it
where we have an idea that it
‘ought’ to be, or some arbitrary
target like ‘touching your toes’.
The poses gradually come to
feel expansive rather than
confrontational. This can be a
challenging concept to embody
for those from a sport/intensive
training background who are
adept at ‘pushing through’ and
trying harder, with a binary all
or nothing approach.
The pretzel poses that people
often associate with yoga
are not where you start, nor
where most of us end up – and
may well be inappropriate
for our anatomy (and chosen
activities) in any case. A good
starting place in summarising
your initial encounters with
yoga as “simply breathing -
and exploring movement and
stillness to bring balance and
space in the mind and body”.
A hugely liberating experience
as most of us have lost touch
with how to deeply and
completely relax into a state of
being rather than doing.
Stretches the spine and shoulders
seconds to a minute, then release your
buttocks down onto your heels.
Cautions:
Preparatory Poses:
Knee injury
How to try the pose:
1. Come onto all fours. See that your shoulders
are above your wrists and your hips are above
your knees. Walk your hands forward a few
inches and curl your toes under.
2. As you exhale, move your buttocks halfway
back toward your heels. Keep your arms
active; don’t let your elbows touch the ground.
Downward-Facing Dog - Deservedly one of
yoga’s most widely recognized yoga poses,
Adho Mukha Svanasana, offer the ultimate allover,
rejuvenating stretch.
Sick and tired of being in pain?
Realigning the Atlas is like getting
the foundations of a house laid
correctly... when the support
structure is in place, the rest of
the vertebrae are aligned and fully
functioning at their best.
This analogy will help to understand the process:
Fully qualified Harley Street Practitioner, visiting
Bury St Edmunds
“The Atlas is like the first link on a chain. If the
first link is twisted, the rest of the chain will be
twisted. If you undo it, the chain will straighten
up”.
Many years of clinical research have shown that
the first cervical vertebra (C1) or atlas, is more or
less malrotated from birth, in almost all humans.
Traumas such as whiplash, slips and falls, or any
sports injuries can push the atlas vertebra in an
even worth position, and therefore be the cause
of many health problems.
“I would definitely recommend this to anyone
who suffer back and shoulder pain, even sinus
problems. It has been over 3 months now pain
free and sinus unblocked” - T.B - London
The treatment for this misalignment is called
AtlasPROfilax® and is practised by Marie-
Agnes Casalini, Harley Street Practitioner,
visiting Suffolk, certified to the highest level
AtlasPROfilax®.
“After countless visits to an osteopath and a
chiropractor, with only minor and temporary
improvement to my stiff and twisted neck and
torso, I discovered MarieAtlas and had the
AtlasProfilax treatment. I could not have been in
better hands as Marie-Agnes is kind, gentle and
caring, though the treatment is uncomfortable,
it is bearable and doesn’t take long. My pelvis
straightened out almost immediately and
my neck is getting better every day. Yes it’s
expensive, but worth every penny”! - M.A
AtlasPROfilax® is a very safe, natural, non-invasive
method which was developed by the Swiss
Renée-Claudius Schümperli between 1993 and
1996, after years of study, now recommended by
Chiropractors and Osteopaths.
The malrotation of the atlas vertebra can be
accurately and safely corrected by the unique
AtlasPROfilax® method with only one application.
The application requires two scheduled
appointments with Marie, firstly for the treatment
and then a follow up appointment.
Finding your optimum health...
Do you feel below par? Small changes
in your diet may lead to big changes in
your health. Want to know exactly what
you need to change and how to make
those changes long lasting?
Carrie Temple, Nutritional Therapist. Dip NT CNM, offers
expert advice in Nutritional Therapy.
HOW WILL NUTRITIONAL THERAPY HELP YOU?
Nutritional Therapy is a complementary therapy that
works well alongside conventional medicine. It is most
relevant for individuals with long term sub optimal
health, as well as those looking for support to enhance
their health and wellbeing. Practitioners consider each
individual to be unique and recommend personalised
nutrition and lifestyle programmes rather than a ‘one size
fits all’ approach.
WHY NUTRITIONAL THERAPY?
You have seen your GP who has run all of the appropriate
tests and informed you that the results are normal and
that there is nothing to worry about,
but your symptoms have not improved
and you still feel below par. If you are
low in specific vitamins or minerals,
have an imbalanced fat intake, are
short of protein or eating unhelpful
carbohydrates, making changes to your
diet could help. Identifying and changing
these on your own is difficult, but this is
where your nutritional therapist is trained
to help.
Carrie explains, “As Nutritional Therapist
I can identify areas of nutritional
imbalance and create an individual
nutrition programme to improve and
optimise your health and wellbeing. I
aim to show you the link between your
symptoms and the foods you are eating.
I will educate you on why certain foods
can benefit you, recommend alternatives
and inspire you to make changes as you
gain control and bring your body back
Cheeseman Can
Come Again...
APRIL 2019 | ISSUE #78
BY RALPH OATES
A series of articles which will feature boxing facts
from both the past to the present...
Ted Cheeseman made his
professional debut on the 12
September 2015 stopping Gabor
Ambrus of Hungary in two
rounds of four at the O2 Arena
Greenwich in London. It was
early days but it was clear that
Cheeseman had the potential to
go far in the game. It was just a
matter of time before he would
be adding various titles to his
name.
Over the next couple of
years Cheeseman lived up to
expectations and continued his
winning run. On the 1 July 2017
in his ninth fight he challenged
Matthew Ryan for the English
Super-Welterweight crown
the venue being the O2 Arena.
Ryan was not an easy touch
he had taken part in 15 fights
with just one defeat. Ryan was
an ambitious fighter and was
capable of giving Cheeseman a
good argument. It was on paper
an evenly matched contest but
Cheeseman stormed to the
championship stopping Ryan
in three rounds of a scheduled
ten. After three more winning
bouts Cheeseman stepped into
the fray to contest another
title the vacant World Boxing
Association International Super-
Welterweight Championship
against experienced American
Carson Jones who had
participated in 57 bouts bout’s
winning 40 losing 12 drawing
three with two being declared a
no contest. Jones was unable to
make the stipulated weight for
the said contest which meant
that only Cheeseman could take
the crown should he win and this
he did in style gaining a 10 round
points decision against his tough
opponent.
Cheeseman made a first
defence of the World Boxing
Association International
Super-Welterweight crown
against fellow Briton Paul Upton
who was coming into the fight
with an undefeated slate of 15
victories. At the York Hall in
Bethnal Green in London on the
6 June 2018 Upton was stopped
in round four of a scheduled 10.
Next up on the 27 October
2018 came Asinia Byfield in
a bout for the vacant British
Super-Welterweight crown.
The venue for the contest was
the Copper Box Arena at the
Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
London. Byfield had only lost
once in 15 professional outings
prior to meeting Cheeseman but
he found another defeat on his
record when losing a 12 round
points decision.
It was now considered time for
the London born fighter to step
up another level and on the
2nd February 2019 at the O2
Arena Cheeseman challenged
26 year old European title
holder Sergio Garcia of Spain.
Going into the contest the
two fighters were undefeated.
Cheeseman’s slate showed
15 fights with 10 wins coming
inside the distance including
one on a disqualification. Garcia
entered the battle ground
with an impressive record of
28 victorious fights with 13
ending inside the distance.
This was the first defence of
the championship by Garcia.
42
It looked to be a 50-50 fight a
contest hard to call but many
felt that Cheeseman would
emerge victorious and go on to
even higher honours. After 12
rounds of intense action much
to the disappointment to his
many fans, Cheeseman suffered
his first defeat being soundly
outpointed by the Spanish boxer.
Garcia was just too good for
the Briton in every department.
Cheeseman was brave and kept
on going attempting to turn the
fight around but his attempts
were futile. Garcia had an answer
for everything Cheeseman tried
during the contest. This was of
course a setback but being only
23 years of age Cheeseman can
most certainly come again. It is
apparent judging from his defeat
to Garcia that he still has a great
deal to learn and any grand
plans for the future will have to
be put on hold. It is possible of
course that this fight came too
soon for Cheeseman against a
man who proved to be a great
deal better than expected. After
a rest from the rigours of the
ring Cheeseman can ease his
way back slowly with one or two
warm up contests. Then later he
can prepare to defend his British
title perhaps even attempting to
win the Lonsdale Belt outright.
(Cheeseman needs to make
three successful defences of the
title to do so). There is a well
known phrase that being- one
swallow doesn’t make a summer
and in boxing one defeat doesn’t
end a career. Cheeseman can
come again he still has a future
in the sport.

SPRING GREEN
potato and ricotta
homity pie
Pulse until combined, breaking up any lumps.
Add the parsley and pulse for a few seconds
more until mixed. Bring together in a ball and
tip out onto a lightly floured surface.
2. Roll out the dough to a circle large enough
to line a 22cm deep pie dish. Trim and crimp
the edges; chill for 30 mins.
An Easter favourite...
We’ve given classic homity pie a seasonal
twist, using fresh greens, peas, spring onions,
asparagus and polenta – it’s really easy to
make and full of spring flavours.
Ingredients
• 650g new potatoes
• 240g bag sliced spring greens
• 3 eggs
• 4 tbsp double cream
• 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard
• 250g tub ricotta, drained
• 125g pack asparagus tips
• bunch spring onions, finely sliced
• 100g fresh or frozen peas
• 75g hard cheese
• 3 tbsp ground polenta, almonds or
breadcrumbs
For the pastry
• 500g pack shortcrust pastry, diced
• 75g hard cheese grated
Method
1. To make the pastry, put the shortcrust dough
and cheese in the bowl of a food processor.
55
3. Meanwhile, put the potatoes in a large pan of
water. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10-15
mins, until tender. Remove from the heat and
drain. Leave to cool, then roughly slice. Preheat
the oven to gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C. Put a
baking sheet on the middle shelf to heat up.
4. Microwave, steam or boil the spring greens
following the packet instructions, until wilted.
Leave to cool a little, then squeeze out the
excess water. In a mixing bowl, whisk the eggs,
cream, mustard and ricotta until combined;
season. Cut the asparagus in half and set the
spears aside. Dice the stalks into 1cm chunks
and add to the ricotta mixture with the spring
greens, peas, potatoes and most of the spring
onions. Scatter over most of the cheese and
mix well.
5.Line the chilled pastry base with the polenta,
breadcrumbs or almonds. Tip in the filling,
pressing down with the back of a spoon
until tightly packed. Arrange the reserved
asparagus spears on top, then scatter over the
remaining spring onions and cheese. Bake on
the preheated baking sheet for 45 mins, or until
the filling is set and the pastry golden. Leave to
stand for 15 mins before serving.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Tip: As the pie contains potatoes, serve with
roasted parsnips, buttered carrots and Savoy
cabbage, plus a dollop of wholegrain mustard.
The Riesling
Grape
The Riesling grape is considered to be one of the top 3 white grapes in the
world, joining Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
Historically it was grown in Germany where
it is referenced in 1435, although it may have
been around longer than that. It tends to
relate to its location where in Germany, its
ancestral home, it displays apple and tree fruit
notes. In warmer climates it shows more citrus
and lime flavours.
Germany...
The leading grape in Germany, it can show
fruit and mineral flavours and ripens from
September to late November. The main
product in this country is achieved by
picking grapes at different times even up
to December. This achieves varying levels
of sugar, depending on harvest time and
can dictate how sweet the wine will be. It is
common to see grapes that have shrivelled up
on the vine concentrating the sugar.
Although some vines have better vineyard
locations than others the main quality range
is based on when the grapes are picked
and the sugar levels they have reached.
These are called Pradikat wines, or Qmp.
The descriptions on the labels will range
from Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese, the
driest to the sweetest. Lesser quality wines
are called Qba and would use other grape
varieties in the main.
Alsace...
The Riesling has been planted in Alsace since
60

1477 and is considered to be their best grape.
They are quite different to the German ones
in that the soil is more calcareous than the
more slatey German soils. More French styles
of wine making show the difference as well as
the use of oak. The wines are more full bodied
but they also produce a late harvest wine
which is similar to the sweet German wines.
Australia and New Zealand...
In 1838 William Macarthur planted the
Riesling in New South Wales. It was for a
time the most planted white variety until the
Chardonnay came on the scene in the 1990’s.
The warmer Australian climate produces
much thicker skins. It thrives well in
South Australia and Western
Australia too. The grape got
to New Zealand in the 1970’s
and the cool Marlborough
regions suits it well. Late
harvest ones are produced
in Nelson. Central Otago is
a cool newcomer with great
promise.
Austria...
The palest and driest having only about 4
% sugar but some sweet ones can go up to
about 20% sugar.
United States...
German immigrants brought the grape to
the USA in the late nineteenth century, and
called it the Johannisberg Riesling to prove its
German origins. Grown in New York State in
the Finger Lakes it is light bodied and ranges
from dry to sweet. Ice wine, extremely sweet
is made here as well. In California It is not
as popular as Chardonnay but can produce
some high quality, late harvest wines. In the
Pacific North West, Oregon is decreasing its
use of the Riesling but in Washington State it
is increasing. Randall Boon from Santa Cruz,
California, makes a full AVA wine using solely
the Riesling grape. Even Texas, Oklahoma,
And Ohio have their parcels of Riesling
showing it has the potential.
Canada...
Mostly from Ontario and Niagara which are
major producers. Here they make Icewine.
Icewine comes as a result of the bunches
of grapes being frozen on the vine
and the grapes losing water , thus
concentrating the sugar for some
very sweet wine. Some is made in
British Columbia as well, but also
some sparkling and table wine. In
Nova Scotia the grape is showing
particular promise, as a result of
warm summers and cool nights. The
Maritime climate also promotes some
interest.
Other Rieslings..
There is some confusion with the title Riesling,
but with other spellings. The Welschriesling
is totally unrelated and is grown in Austria,
Hungary and Bulgaria. Sometimes known
as the Laski Rizling in Slovenia, Croatia and
Serbia and also as Olasz Rizling in Hungary.
These three having nothing to do with
Riesling.
Conclusions...
The grape Riesling is becoming fashionable again and is grown all round the world with a vast
range of styles from Dry to luscious sweet wines. As diverse as Germany, Argentina, California,
New Zealand etc, you are bound to find one you like, Give it a try.
THE
HOSTE
By Rachel Ducker
With the stresses and strains of
life, sometimes you just need a
weekend away to hit the reset
button. I needed just that.
Just a stone throw away from the stunning
North Norfolk coast, The Hoste has been
welcoming guests since 1651. Overlooking
Burnham Market’s central green, the hotel
makes the perfect destination
for a coastal staycation.
This Georgian resort is
known as Chelsea-on-Sea,
its beautiful high street is
lined with period houses
and independent shops, and
a traditional butcher, baker and post office,
ideal for both locals and visitors alike.
A great Hoste…
The Hoste is a 62-room hotel spread across
three sites: the original inn, the Georgian-era
Vine House, and Railway House, a former train
station.
The inn houses the main reception, dining
areas, a luxury spa and most of the bedrooms,
there’s also 20-seat cinema!
All rooms at The Hoste are individually
designed, as a special treat we opted for a
Divine room, which was elegantly decorated
and extremely comfortable.
The Hoste is dog friendly spot, so upon arrival
we sat next to the pub’s roaring fire, whilst
making friends with a couple of spaniels, what
a treat! It’s great for those who love to travel
with their four-legged friends, especially in
this area, with so many lovely walks around.
Award winning dining…
After a quick freshen up, it was time to dine
at its two AA-rosette restaurant. The Hoste
is home to an award-winning restaurant
facilitated by a stylish panelled dining room
with menus change regularly. This approach
celebrates the region’s produce by using the
finest locally sourced ingredients possible.
With such an appealing menu it makes the
choice more difficult! I was impressed with
the imaginative menu created by head chef
Trevor Clark, but even more impressed with
his appearance halfway through our meal.
With an unimposing introduction he added a
personal touch to our dining experience, plus,
it was wonderful to be able to tell him how
much we enjoyed the food.
Breakfast in the morning is served in either of
the two restaurants. In addition to the
lavish buffet breakfast (included in the room
price) are cooked breakfast options including
roasted chestnut mushrooms on brioche or
avocado on sourdough.
The Lunch menu is served every day between
12-00pm & 6-00pm, or if you can
wait, indulge in The Hoste full
afternoon tea for £16. On fine
weather days you can dine
alfresco on the lawn.
Relax and Unwind…
The hotel’s spa has two
treatment rooms using
products by Espa.
During my stay I was treated to a
mum to be pregnancy massage, which after
14 weeks of being turned down at various
salons, it was great to find somewhere who
had a qualified therapist to treat me.
You could have just the one treatment or you
could book in for the whole day. The choice
is yours. Treatments include a facial, full-body
massage, manicure, use of the hot tub
and a two-course lunch with wine
for £170.
Things to do…
This area is not short of
beautiful places to visit. Take
a trip to nearby Brancaster
Beach, run by the National Trust,
with its four miles of golden sandy
beaches and dunes.
Or how about a stroll at Holkham? You can
visit the National Nature Reserve, one of the
largest in the country, and home to many
rare species of flora and fauna.
If you don’t want to stray too far away
from the hotel, as well as the spa, gym
and cinema, The Hoste has its own on-site
Nelson museum, Nelson Lodge. Artefacts
include a leather bucket from HMS Victory,
letters written by Horatio Nelson and a lifesize
model.
Lord Admiral Nelson used to drink at The
Hoste, but that’s not the hotels only claim to
fame, it was rumoured the Kate and William
have also been spotted sipping on local drinks
at the bar.
The verdict…
With welcoming staff, outstanding food and the
ideal base for exploring the North Norfolk coast,
as well as the county’s many stately homes
and picturesque villages, The Hoste makes the
perfect host. I am looking forward to my next
visit back in the summer.
BEN
HAENOW
We speak to
Ben about his
UK acoustic tour
visiting Norwich
this month...
FEATURE
APRIL 2019 APRIL | ISSUE 2019 | #78 ISSUE | #78 BEN HAENOW
Following the release of his
second studio album ‘Alive’, Ben
Haenow has announced that he
will be touring the UK again in
April 2019.
The charismatic singer-songwriter, who rose
to prominence as the winner of The X Factor
in 2014, has performed to enormous crowds
over the years but has now decided to strip
everything back for his fourth headline tour.
Armed with his signature rock-infused
vocals, Ben will be playing
acoustic sets at intimate
venues across the country.
The tour promises to
be incredibly special
as fans can expect
to hear previously
unheard
renditions of
several songs.
Rachel Ducker
speaks to Ben
about his show
in Norwich.
IT’S BEEN
ALMOST A
YEAR SINCE WE
LAST SPOKE WITH
YOU – WHAT HAVE YOU
BEEN UP TO?
I’ve just been writing, doing a lot of
shows and getting ready for this acoustic
tour, so a lot of prep.
SPEAKING OF YOUR ACOUSTIC TOUR,
I HEAR YOU’RE STOPPING BY US IN
NORWICH EPIC STUDIOS THIS MONTH, CAN
YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THAT?
Yes, this time round is my fourth headline
tour, I have done the last three with a full
band and I guess I wanted to do something
different this time round, so we stripped
everything back and it will be just me and
my brother with acoustic guitars and a bit
of vocal. So it’s a different vibe really for
people who have seen the shows before.
BY NOW YOU’VE HAD A LOT OF
EXPERIENCE PERFORMING, HOW ARE YOU
EXPECTING IT WITHOUT A BAND?
I guess excited, it’s a different experience for
me without being surrounded by a whole
band. I will play more guitar on this tour, so
it’s a little nerve-racking, I am trying to get
the practice in!
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO
NORWICH BEFORE?
Yes, I have! We played
there on the last tour
its was fantastic fun,
Norwich is a lovely
place.
IT IS! I’M NOT
BIASED BUT…
[laughs]
SO YOU WILL
HAVE YOUR
BROTHER ON
TOUR WITH
YOU, WILL JESS
AND THE FAMILY
BE JOINING YOU
ON ANY OF THOSE
DATES?
My family are going to be at a couple
of the shows, particularly the one that’s
closer to home in Brighton, which is the last
date of the tour, so I think everyone will pop
along to that one.
AFTER THE TOUR FINISHES WHAT ARE
YOUR PLANS? ANY WHISPERS OF NEW
ALBUM? WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD
TO?
Yeah for sure, more recently I have been in
with some great producers and songwriters,
trying to experiment with new sounds
71

APRIL 2019 APRIL | ISSUE 2019 | #78 ISSUE | BEN #78 HAENOW
and find a new direction, so there are no
immediate plans to rush anything out. I’m
enjoying being creative again.
MANY PEOPLE WILL KNOW YOU FROM
WINNING THE X FACTOR, WHICH IS AN
AMAZING ACHIEVEMENT, HAVE YOU
MANAGED TO SHAKE THAT LABEL YET? BY
THAT, I MEAN, DO PEOPLE STILL SEE YOU
AS THE X FACTOR GUY?
Yeah, I am not trying to consciously
shake that label; I think that’s going to be
quite hard, as like you say, that is where
people know me from. So I don’t know that I
will ever escape that, but what I am trying to
show people is that hopefully I am a credible
artist and not just a guy on TV doing these
covers.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEBODY
WHO IS LOOKING TO START A CAREER IN
MUSIC?
I’d say go for it – you’ve definitely got to be
passionate about it. As the industry goes,
its quite cut throat and its hard, you can
get knocked back a lot you’ve got to have
confidence and be resilient, but also be
prepared to put in some hard work.
WHAT IS YOUR THE FAVOURITE PART OF
YOUR JOB?
I think live performance is probably my
favourite thing, getting out playing to people
and seeing the reaction from them.
I take my inspiration from general life really
and it’s been great to see all the support
people show me on social media; it keeps my
spirits high and it keeps me going.
SO FOR ANYONE WHO’S THINKING OF
COMING ALONG TO THE NORWICH GIG,
CAN YOU GIVE US A FEW REASONS TO
PERSUADE THEM…
First of all if its people from outside of
Norwich come down to Norwich because it’s
an incredible place! For people in Norwich
who have never seen me play before, give
me a chance, do you know what I mean, just
come and have a good night with us! We
have some local support acts, it’s something
different!
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME BEN, WE’D
LOVE TO POP ALONG AND SEE YOU AT
EPIC, BABY HUNT TOO, WE FOUND OUT
YESTERDAY WE ARE HAVING A LITTLE
BOY, IN FACT YOU ARE ONE OF THE FIRST
PEOPLE I’VE JUST TOLD!
No way… [laughs] I’m so honoured,
congratulations that’s incredible.
I CAN PERSONALLY DELIVER YOU A
BOUNCE MAGAZINE THIS TIME!
Well, I hope to see you all down there.
For tickets see www.benhaenow-official.com
WHAT IS THE AVERAGE DAY LIKE FOR
YOU AT THE MOMENT WITH TOUR
PREPARATIONS?
It’s cool, it’s a lot of time spent sitting with my
brother, and as much as that’s nice, brothers
do argue every now and then! So we are
trying to keep things calm, no Chinese burns
and stuff like that. I get up go to the gym,
meet my brother and we work out variations
of the songs and adapt them to an acoustic
format.
WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU LATELY?
Come and see Ben Haenow
Sometimes it’s tricky
second time around...
We are all aware of how difficult it is to get on the
property ladder first time around, but what happens
when you’re ready to move again?
We know investing in your first home doesn’t necessarily
guarantee financial security when moving up the property
ladder. Research shows it’s often a jump of well over
£100,000 when moving from first to second home posing
a challenge when building enough equity in your home to
make the second step.
when you are unable to rely on Bank of
Mum and Dad?
The Cambridge Building Society can
help...
People tend to think of a low deposit
mortgage – one that needs a 5% deposit
– as a product specifically for First Time
Buyers. However, whether it is your first,
products are available to all, with the very
aim to help those who need that extra
support and who are not able to rely on
With this in mind, it’s not
surprising that those who
needed financial support
when buying their first
home might still need some
assistance second time
around. This is usually where
the Bank of Mum and Dad comes
WHAT HAPPENS IF I WANT TO
CHANGE MY LOAN?...
When you remortgage you can change
your requirements, such as:
If you’ve got a
mortgage you’ve
probably heard the term ‘remortgage’.
Find out more about what it means and
what your options are.
WHAT IS A REMORTGAGE?...
A remortgage is simply switching your
mortgage deal to a new one, continuing to
use your property as security against the
loan.
You can remortgage with your existing
provider or with a different lender.
A remortgage typically takes place once
your current mortgage product ends (this
is usually a specific interest rate applied for
two or three years, or longer). You should
check the terms of your current mortgage
deal carefully to make sure you are aware
of the end date and any fees, charges or
penalties which may apply to move your
mortgage.
• Increasing the amount borrowed -
for example to use the funds for home
improvements or gift a deposit to help a
family member onto the housing ladder
• Reducing the amount borrowed - using
savings to pay off some of the previous
loan.
• Amending the ‘term’ (length) -
typically you will have lower monthly
repayments if you opt for a longer term,
but you will pay back more interest in total
than if you choose a shorter term with
higher monthly repayments.
Whatever your circumstances, it’s
important to get a mortgage that fits your
own individual needs.
At Ipswich Building Society we offer free,
no-obligation mortgage advice through
our team of Mortgage Consultants. If
you’re looking for a mortgage with us
we’ll do our best to find the right one for
you. Give us a call on 0330 123 0773 or
A Mindful
SPRING CLEAN
A friend of mine recently
asked if I had ever meditated.
I hadn’t and asked why they
were asking. Well I’m very glad
BY I RUBY asked… REED
Of course I knew what
meditating was.
Or did I?
I knew of the general pose and how
it was supposed to be good for
wellbeing, right?
Hmm. It seems there is actually a
lot more to it, most interestingly the
scientifically proven benefits!
I had a little research about what
I was getting myself into (after
having promised my friend I would
give it a go).
First things first, lets clarify what
meditation is. Meditation is actually
a simple process. A basic form of
meditation is breathing meditation.
This is where you focus on your
breathing pattern and only that.
Each time your concentration wanders on to something
else, you simply bring it back to your breathing. Repeat this
endlessly for the desired amount of time.
The point of this is that every time you pull your attention back
to your breathing, you’re developing what we will call your
‘attention control’. After time, your concentration, attention
span and overall focus on day to day activity will increase and
improve.
Some of the really worthwhile benefits worth noting are;
• Meditation has intense calming effects- great to relieve stress.
• Recharges the brain so you have more energy throughout the
day.
• It’s been proven that people who meditate need less sleep.
• Meditation makes your brain age slower and increases the
amount of grey matter in your brain. (Grey matter is responsible
for muscle control, seeing,
hearing, memory, emotions, and
speech!)
• It also helps you to
procrastinate less, resulting in
getting more done in the same
amount of time!
• Meditation helps your mind
evaluate your thoughts so
you can make better sense of
them by stepping away to gain
perspective.
So what do I need? A timer (just
ten minutes a day will suffice!)
and a cushion. And how do I sit?
• Cross your legs in front of you-
If you’re uncomfortable on the
floor. Use a chair, don’t worry
about too many rules.
• Your back straight- This keeps
you alert.
• Eyes closed- If you’re tired and start to find
yourself drifting off when you close your eyes, It’s
suggested opening them slightly to direct your
gaze gently on a space on the floor.
• Don’t worry about your hands- Wherever they
are comfortable is fine. If you want to form the
circles with your fingers and thumbs you can!
• Look slightly downward- It opens up your chest.
• These are guidelines to your unique personal
position. The aim is to find one that allows you to
be alert but relaxed at the same time.
I hope you find the benefits rewarding!
APRIL 2019 APRIL | ISSUE 2019 | #78 ISSUE | #78 HISTORY
Norwich
Easter Fairs...
Norwich had been
granted Charters by many
Kings for fairs to be held
in certain places and the
last three were Tombland
fair, which took place
on the Thursday before
Easter.
A fair at Bishop’s Bridge was
held on the Monday and
Tuesday in Easter week along
with the Monday and Tuesday
in Whitsun week.
The Tombland fairs were
granted by a Charter from
the cathedral convert which
in its time became a source
of anger and resentment
between the monks and
citizens of Norwich as the
monks refused to allow
the citizens to enjoy their
privileges which included the
fact that Tombland and Holm
Street were exempted from
the magistrates of the city.
This was latter contended
that the charter by King
Richard I which meant that
all of the city was within the
authority.
Because of this, riots took
place, the first being at the
Whit-Sunday fair in 1272. It
was estimated that 32,000
people were involved, and
people were killed. People
were dragged off and put
to death in the city, other
people were imprisoned and
everything from the cathedral
was looted. Citizens were
hanged, and the city was
fined £2,000.
By 1306, King Edward I made
a ruling that the grounds be
divided in half for every fair,
so the citizens could build
their stalls and pay no fees.
When the dissolution was
over, King Henry VIII gave
the city liberty the rights to
hold a fair from the eve of
Whitsunday, to end a day
after Trinity Sunday.
The Tombland fair sold toys
along with a variety of cakes
and biscuits and the fair
which traded horses and
cattle was held at the same
on the Castle Ditches. This
fair was originally held on
Good Friday but later held
on the Thursday prior to
Easter. A smaller fair was held
by Bishop’s Bridge was also
known as the Pleasure Fairs.
There was a previous fair for
horses and cattle that took
pace on Lammasday
at Lakenham
near Hertford bridges.
The Tombland fair in its
originality remained until 1686
when it was moved to Castle
Hill.
A biscuit called ‘Fair Buttons’
or ‘Norfolk Fair Buttons’ was
only made for the Tombland
fair and could not be found at
any other time of the year.
An original recipe would be
as follows;
8 oz. four
4 oz. brown sugar
1/4 oz. ground ginger
Pinch of bicarbonate of soda
2 oz. lard (which could be
substituted with either butter
or a dairy free product)
4 oz. golden syrup
To cook in a kitchen of today’s
standard you would set the
oven to 200°c. Mix the flour,
sugar, ginger, bicarbonate
of soda with the lard or
substitute until it resembles
fine bread crumbs. After
adding the syrup to the mix
and mixing you will then roll
out the mix very thinly onto
a floured surface and then
cut into 2-inch rounds and
then place the rounds onto
a greased baking sheet and
cook for 12 minutes.
Skin care expert Geraldine Walters gives the low
down on the A-Z of what’s in your bottles...
[C] Vitamin C – Nature’s boost to skin health
in all its forms...
It looks like vitamins are going
to be a recurring feature in
this series about skincare
ingredients, so perhaps we
should define exactly what a
vitamin is.
So, keeping it simple, a vitamin is an
organic molecule that is an essential
nutrient your body needs in small
amounts for the proper functioning of its
metabolism.
That is, it’s a substance you must have for
your body to work properly. You have to
get them from what you eat because we
don’t make them ourselves.
As for Vitamin C (probably the best
known vitamin and most researched in
2017), it has a range of super powers but
it also comes in a range of disguises when
it adopts different forms and there are
several different types of vitamin C that are
used in skincare products. For avid label
readers these include: L-ascorbic acid,
ascorbyl palmitate and retinyl ascorbate.
The former has the most scientific research
surrounding its benefits and is deemed ‘the
queen’ of vitamin C. L-ascorbic acid boosts
collagen production and smooths and
firms skin, as well as fending off photoageing.
That is, basically, ageing from ultra violet
light, or sun damage. Ascorbic Acid is a
powerful free radical scavenger and in its
form of Ascorbyl Palmitate, Vitamin C
can inhibit the production of melanin so
reducing pigmentation and brightening the
skin.
Additionally, Vitamin C can boost collagen.
It appears to strengthen the protein’s
strands, making them firmer and more
resilient.
And it’s a myth that any type of vitamin C
in your moisturising serum and lotion will
disease. Hence the nickname for the Brits
as Limeys.
And it’s worth noting, for all the fruit and
veg haters, that scurvy is only a risk if you
don’t have enough vitamin C in your diet
for at least three months.
But remember that pregnancy,
breastfeeding and illness cause a hike in
the amount of vitamin C your body needs.
offer some skin benefit. Note how, when
antioxidants are exposed to light and air,
they breakdown (see how fast an apple
oxidises when it’s cut in half).
So it’s best to buy products that come in
air-tight packaging and pumps. Clinical
skincare will often use pure Ascorbic Acid
in a powder form that is only activated
when mixed with a liquid solution. This
ensures your treatment comes with knockout
results.
And smokers (does anyone still smoke?),
you’re more at risk of a vitamin C
deficiency as this reduces the body’s
absorption. But deficiency also causes
bruising, blocked follicles and bleeding
gums.
So stock up your fruit bowl and add a little
zest into your life.
And what happens if you don’t have
enough Vitamin C? Well, there’s scurvy of
course, a disease once widespread among
fruit-deprived sailors in the Victorian
era who were given limes to prevent the
APRIL 2019 | APRIL ISSUE 2019 #78 | | ISSUE HAIR #78 & BEAUTY
Not all body treatments are created equal...
We have all seen body treatments and wraps
advertised at spas and salons and many of us
will have tried them out, but are they all the
same? How do we choose what is best for our
individual needs and concerns?
I have had various body treatments in the past,
including a wrap or two. I’ve also spoken to friends,
family and colleagues about their experiences and
what they like and don’t like in a wrap. The major
dislike was being wrapped up (unable to move) and
left alone in the room.
Having looked at the Pevonia treatments, I was
impressed to see that they include so much more than
many other salons. Their therapists are trained never to
leave the room during a treatment. Instead, while the
products are sinking into the body and creating their
magic, the therapists will perform a massage.
A little more about that later.
Pevonia trains therapists, across the world, to deliver
the most relaxing and effective treatments. The
emphasis is on wellness – for the skin, body and mind.
Natural ingredients are used to create a change in
the skin and produce visible and professional results.
Botanical and marine ingredients are combined with
advanced technology for optimum de-ageing and
unparalleled rejuvenation.
The Pevonia body range includes:
o Speciality Body Care Treatments
o Body Wraps
o Massage
o Exfoliation
o Hands and Feet
o Therapy for Mums
I love the Aromatic Moor Mud Tension Relief
treatments – available for the back or whole body.
The warmed moor mud, sourced from Northern
Canada, has taken 40,000 years to develop and
contains numerous vitamins, minerals and trace
elements. There’s no need to be concerned about a
‘muddy smell’ either, as this beautiful product is infused
with Pine Essential Oil and Rosemary, which produces
a very pleasant almond-like smell. The other wraps that
I count amongst my favourites, are:
The Cellu-Smooth Green Coffee Wrap helps to
slim and tone your body via cutting-edge cellulite
treatment. 100% pure micronised green coffee;
naturally rich in chlorogenic acid, polysaccharides,
proteins and essential oils, smooths and enhances the
skin’s overall texture. This wrap stimulates your body’s
ability to break down fat, increase metabolism and
eliminate water retention. It visibly reduces spongy,
dimply, cellulitic areas.
Stem Cells Phyto-Elite Intensive Body Contouring
Wrap is an exquisite 3-in-1 exfoliating, contouring, and
regenerating wellness experience. It infuses your skin
with the latest de-ageing actives and natural argan and
comfrey plant stem cells, blended with green coffee,
avocado, shea butter and other potent ingredients.
Proven to dissolve unwanted fat and cellulitic deposits
while reducing skin sagging and repairing sun damage.
With all wraps, it is recommended that clients have a
course of six treatments to experience the best results.
This will be further enhanced by following a healthy
eating plan, taking regular exercise and completing a
good home care routine. I tend to use my body brush
and the Pevonia body creams at home.
with special offers. To book your VIP experience call 01284 748470 or email
isn’t written in stone. There are
no hard and fast rules that work
for everyone. Diet, environment
and your skincare regime all
play their part.
However there are many things that we can do to
keep our mature skin healthy and looking fabulous!
There are particular ingredients that help to reduce
the familiar signs of aging. Common giveaway
signs such as wrinkles around the eyes and mouth,
blemishes, age spots, thinning or dull skin can all
be improved with the right care.
Argan Oil...
Top on my list of ingredients to care for mature
skin is Argan Oil. It’s my absolute favourite oil. It’s
incredibly pure, naturally healing and has barely
any scent at all. It makes an brilliant carrier oil for
other ingredients too, if you’re looking to create a
super blend for yourself.
Argan Oil can be applied from top to toe. It makes
a wonderful face serum helping to reduce the
appearance of unwanted lines, wrinkles, blemishes,
age spots, and dry skin. Giving a fresh healthy
glow. It’s a true bathroom essential as its also an
amazing treatment for burns, bites, scars and
stretchmarks.
Coffee...
When we think of coffee, we instantly think
HAIR & BEAUTY
APRIL 2019 | ISSUE #78
morning pick me up. Although as a drink coffee can
dehydrate us, the coffee grains actually carry a lot of
goodness.
They also act as a wonderful exfoliator! Antioxidant rich,
coffee has been known to slow down the effects of aging
when applied to the skin. The act of exfoliating removes
dead skin cells and replenishes skin encouraging a fresher,
brighter appearance.
Turmeric...
Not just a wonderful cooking ingredient, Turmeric is also
full of antioxidants and skin loving compounds.
Studies show that turmeric can act as an anti aging
ingredient to keep your skin healthy and looking youthful.
It can be found in a variety of products, not just creams.
It has anti-inflammatory qualities and can help cases of
hyperpigmentation and even scarring.
consider treating our body holistically.
For example we can apply an eye cream
to help reduce the appearance of bags or
dark circles under our eyes but ensuring we
get enough sleep every night will have a
significant effect too.
Equally our mental and emotional state can
influence our skin, causing breakouts or flare
ups in autoimmune issues as an example.
Need advice?
Contact us on info@funkyskincare.com and
we will be happy to offer you advice and
recommendations of which products are
right for you. Written by Sarah Gare.
Turmeric can be found in our Urban Veda Radiance range,
particularly effective on dull and dry skin.
Rosehip...
There is quite a distinctive smell to Rosehip oil, in its
natural form it’s not as sweet as you’d expect and is more
earthy.
Much like turmeric, Rosehip oil is very effective on scars
and blemishes it penetrates the skin on a deeper level
improving the moisture levels and repairing the layers to
keep your skin looking younger for longer.
Less is more...
There is a huge huge list of ingredients that could help
your skin stay healthy and young in appearance. I truly
believe less is more when it comes to skincare. Less
ingredients, higher quality.
Therefore if the skincare world baffles you and brings you
out in a cold sweat about where to start, the very best
place to begin is with an all natural skincare regime.
Chemicals such as SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) often
found in non natural skincare can be an irritant to the skin
and can cause dry skin too, this is a hot ingredient to avoid
along with the parabens family too.
The holistic approach...
Aside from the products we apply to our skin it’s wise to
SUNSHINE AND SHOWERS
BY KATE LINES
Kate’s Top Tip : Take cuttings of your
favourite conifers.
Spring is finally in evidence as
daffodils and flowering trees start
to bloom.
Expect the inevitable April showers this month
but with sunny days too, when you can turn your
attention to the lawn.
It’s an exciting month, with indoor-sown seeds
well into growth, and it’s also time to start sowing
outdoors. Just watch out for frosts...
Deadhead daffodils and narcissi; give them a liquid
feed or a sprinkling of bonemeal and then let them
die down. Don’t cut off the leaves as they are
necessary to replenish the bulb for next year.
Keep deadheading spring bedding to keep it looking
neat, and to encourage new flowers.
Now the soil is warming up and things are starting to
grow, add general purpose fertiliser before covering
with mulch especially in borders, the fruit and
vegetable patch and containers.
Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths,
terraces and drives.
Make new beds and borders - mark the shape with
sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer
of growing vegetation and dig the ground over,
incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If
you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf – if
you dig it in the buried grass will regrow.
9. Prune fig trees
5. Start to feed citrus plants
SUFFOLK WEIGHTLIFTING CLUB...
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
If I said Olympic Weightlifting
you may conjure up an image
of a stocky chap in a leotard,
squealing as he tosses a weight,
equivalent to that of a small
family hatchback, above his head.
the usual positive side effects that comes from
regular exercise.
So, I donned my standard gym attire, (leotards
not required), and joined Suffolk Weightlifting
Club who train at Grange Fitness & Performance
Centre in Martlesham (IP5 3RH) under the
tutelage of head coach Tom Hudson along with
qualified colleagues Stuart Bell and Jen Weeks.
However, did you know that static strength
training is actually one of the most efficient
forms of exercise. Heavy lifting gives the
circulatory system a better workout because
the oxygen expenditure is more intense. The
NHS recommends a strength based training
regime to help combat muscle and bone mass
loss that comes with age.
Muscle burns more calories than fat and it’s also
proven to help with back pain, balance plus all
If you’ve watched any lifting in the Olympics then
you’ll be familiar with the competition movements
of...
Snatch: in which you bring the bar from the floor
to above your head in one swift motion.
Clean & Jerk: broken up into two movements
you’ll lift (or ‘clean’) the bar up to the top of your
chest and then lunge out and jerk the bar up
above your head.
104

APRIL 2019 | ISSUE #78
SPORT
Other lifts include the deadlifts, squats, plus
several variations of all of these adjusting the
starting and finishing positions allowing you to
focus on certain areas.
The club operates an 10 week training program
but you don’t have to wait for the next cycle and
can jump in at any time. The first 8 weeks will
focus on the lifting techniques whilst building
strength by adjusting the number of repetitions
and weight, in the ninth week you’ll attempt a
your heaviest 1 repetition of each lift, this is a
great benchmark for all novices and really gives
you something to target. The eighth week will be
a well earned rest giving your body sufficient time
to recover before the next program begins.
Regular readers may note that I’ve often
mentioned my diminutive yet somewhat robust
frame, (aka a barrel), so perhaps I’m built for
lifting! It certainly seemed that way, not overly
technically proficient, but I was able to deliver
a snatch followed by a clean & jerk and seem to
have found a forte in the squat, all spurred on by
the great friendly and welcoming group of the
Suffolk Weightlifting Club. There’s a wonderful
feeling of satisfaction as you hold aloft a mass
of barbell and plates above your head akin to
proudly hoisting a trophy and I can feel the
benefits of a workout without being left in a
gasping for air, sweaty, cardio’ed mess.
I’d seriously recommend you consider some
strength training and be it for fun, for fitness or
if you’d like to consider competing in national
events then Suffolk Weightlifting Club is the
perfect environment for you, join them at Grange
Fitness Monday & Wednesday evenings 7:30 -
9:00 and Saturday mornings 10:30-12:00.
Action Man says: get that weight shifting
with Olympic Weightlifting!
IN THE SPOTLIGHT...
CASWELL
MUSIC
Suffolk-based Caswell grew up in
South London with her then punkrocker,
now vinyl dealer, mother.
Armed with her first microphone as a
toddler, she subsequently taught herself the
piano and began to write songs at just ten
years old. Drawing from influences such as
Kate Bush, Jeff Buckley and Nina Simone,
she’s honed herself a signature sound;
downtempo electronic soul and pop mixed
with a tangible jazz influence.
“Writing is very much a form of catharsis
for me”, says Caswell. “I like having created
something positive like a song out of
something negative that has happened”.
Caswell signed out of 2017 with the release
of her debut EP The Shadow Aspect and
500,000+ Spotify streams under her belt
as well as features on Spotify playlists
Fresh Finds, New Music Friday and Chilled
Pop Hits. She’s since been championed by
BBC Introducing as well as key online taste
makers who cite her as “a viral success”
(Clash Magazine) and “London’s newest
Superstar” (Wonderland Magazine).
She’s had support from Amazing Radio,
Reprezent Radio, Talk Radio and FUBAR
Radio and TV is no stranger to her either,
with track ‘Dance Sober’ being synced
on ITV with a special mention from Holly
Willoughby as “What ‘This Morning’ is
loving at the moment”.
Live, Caswell is able to captivate audiences
and it’s during these moments that she
takes the opportunity to really connect
with them. 2018 was her best summer yet,
having played a string of live UK festival
dates including being featured as a festival
highlight on the official Latitude website
after a performance on Huw Stephen’s Lake
Stage. She’s also previously supported Pixie
Geldof and Arlissa around the UK, along
with performing in venues from The Apple
Store and National Portrait Gallery to XOYO
and St Pancras Old Church.
Caswell is gearing up for the launch of
her sophomore EP Blindside, out on April
5th with support in funding from The
PRS Foundation’s Women Make Music
award. It showcases her knack for writing
sophisticated pop and her symbolic and
literal voice is clear and convincing with
an emotional maturity beyond her years.
This, paired with an undeniable grit and
determination, means that Caswell is an
artist for the ages just now finding her
time.
Archie’s
Adventures
ON THE BROADS...
Time to get out and about now
that winter is over...
Thank goodness for the spring weather... that only
means one thing, more walkies! With summer fast
approaching there are so many great things to do in
Norfolk and Suffolk.
With thanks to Herbert Woods in Potter Heigham, I
was able to enjoy the wind in my fur as we set off for
an adventure on the Norfolk Broads whilst on board
a dog friendly picnic boat.
If you are thinking of such a trip, here are my top tips
to keep your four legged friend safe on the water...
Get a Life Jacket...
I was kindly provided with one from Herbert Woods
as they take safety very seriously. You may think
your dog is a strong swimmer, but depending on
the conditions, including weather and currents, you
could face problems. If you need to pull your dog
out of the water, you need something to grab onto,
better safe than sorry!
hand discourages dogs from drinking water from a
stream, pond, or lake.
Extra Towels or a Mat...
Find a place that’s out of the way and in the shade
that your dog can rest when he needs a break from
the sun. A mat can also help a dog that’s slipping on
the deck of a boat feel more secure and comfortable.
The movements of dogs and boats don’t always
align.
Never Leave them Alone...
Just like a child, you should never leave a dog
unattended in the water–even for a minute. Dogs
can drown, too, so you’ll want to supervise his
swimming at all times.
can also keep up to date with my antics on Twitter
A Water Bowl...
We pant a lot! You should always have clean water
available for your dog. Clean water, of course, is
meant to prevent dehydration, but having plenty on
