conversation. However unprepared we might feel when discussing such technicalities, there is
no doubt that the green credentials of both your
salon interior and your creative work can
go a huge way in conveying to visitors
a mission to reduce your impact on
the environment. Still on a natural theme, we’ve taken a closer look
at Living Coral, the Pantone Colour of the Year - a warm, golden shade which is
both accessible and wearable. We’ve also asked a few of our foremost hair artists to
comment on how other forces of nature have inspired and influenced their own
creative work. In our international section, meanwhile, we go ‘Beyond the Fringe’, with a
look at a timeless classic that has never really out of style. Sure, there have been periods in
recent history which we immediately associate with the classic fringe - the Coco Chanel and
1920s bob immediately spring to mind, not forgetting most of what went on through the
early part of the 1960s. The images we present in this issue confirm that the fringe has now
moved on far beyond the confines of earlier decades!
She was the queen of Carnaby Street at a time when London became the most influential
city in terms of street fashion. In the '60s, Mary Quant had the world at her feet. Known for
launching the miniskirt and the iconic bob sculpted by co-legend, Vidal Sasson, some of
the most iconic images from Swinging London will be at the centre of an exhibition at the
Cousciousness about the issues of sustainability and caring for the environment is becoming more and
more of a driving force for many in our industry. How you communicate that to your clients is a very
personal matter. Leaving to one side the obvious steps that can be taken - using naturally sourced,
organic products and cutting down on energy wastage/carbon footprint - the visual impact of both your
salon interior and your creative work can go a huge way in conveying to visitors your mission to reduce
your impact on the enviroment. The Bad Apple Hair Stafford salon interior (opposite centre) was hugely
influenced by the natural world, with a focus on green being the symbol of life. Gavin Mills, Managing
Director of the 8-salon group, believes that the carefully planned decor helps to raise our clients' ...cont.

Upcycling Love
‘When designing our Swansea salon
(above), I tried to avoid the use of new
materials wherever possible,” comments
Jamie Hill. “I’m committed to reducing my
carbon footprint and so wanted to source
pieces that could be upcycled. I scoured
second hand shops for bargain furniture
and kept an eye on local Facebook pages for
things that people were getting rid of. And I
can’t pass a skip without having a little root
around – people throw away the craziest
things - my salon is full of mismatched
chairs, an old fireplace, a mannequin and a
reception desk made from half a Mini!"
‘Palmeral’ tropical print pays homage to one of the world’s largest palms, and is utilised throughout the
resourceful and get creative with how you can utilise what’s around you,” adds Krysia Eddery, owner of
Perfectly Posh Hair Design. There is such beauty in nature and we are able to incorporate this into our
salons if we use our creative sides and allow ourselves to see the potential in something. Each of these
features in the salon are always a hit amongst our clients and act as brilliant conversation pieces too, so
the benefits to this are two-fold.”
Resourceful AND Sustainable?
During our salon refit at Perfectly Posh Hair Design I was passionate about
reusing and recycling assets where possible," says Krysia Eddery, owner of
Perfectly Posh Hair Design I made the light in the backwash area after finding
a branch in the garden and having enough vision and passion to turn it into a
stunning feature in the salon. Likewise with our reception desk, this was crafted
from reclaimed scaffolding boards and the tables at each styling unit were carved
from a solid oak trunk. There is such beauty in nature which we can draw upon if
we use our creative sides and allow ourselves to see the potential in something.

Nature’s
Finest
This year’s Pantone Colour of the Year, Living Coral,
has already sparked a whole mood of experimental
interpretations in the hair world.
Unlike the picks of previous years, Living Coral is an upbeat warm, golden shade which is accessible
and wearable – the perfect basis for colour inspiration. But to what extent do other aspects from
nature shape the looks we see emerging from the salon? Whether it’s the turning hues of a
magnificent sunset, or the myriad of tones on the golden sands of a tropical beach; surely nature’s rich
colour palette is the most compelling source of new ideas any hairstylist could have? We quizzed a few
to find out what elements have inspired them in their collections…
20 focus

LIGHT-PLAY
‘My colour influences often come from being at the Eden project in Cornwall. They have an amazing
ability for using lights to enhance the wonder of the natural world with playful light shows and aweinspiring
kaleidoscopes of colour. It just shows how different something can look when you introduce
influences of colour, and hair is no different really. Vibrant light and colour can accentuate its best
features and bring out so many different dimensions in the structure, shape and texture of hair.’
JC Aucamp, Guy Kremer, Lymington
Hair: Guy Kremer
FLORA
I love taking inspiration from natural beauty, such as flowers and plants, and also animals and insects.
Looking at nature during the different seasons to see how things change is also great for colour
inspiration and adapting new ideas and trends to include in your work. For this image in particular I
was inspired by the colours, shapes and textures of various flowers and wanted to incorporate the
influence of a bright, floral palette into the hair to give it a bold and contemporary feel. For this hair
look I also wanted the hair to be very soft and feminine – like a flower that’s blossomed and looks
pretty during the spring and summer time.’
AMETHYST
‘The world around us constantly inspires me and every colour we create can be traced back to an element of
nature. Amethyst Crystal was inspired by the naturally occurring violet tones within the Amethyst gemstone.
Taking its cue from the violet-shaded stone that is known for its purification properties, this style pays homage
to the awesome, often unexpected colours that nature has gifted us over thousands of years. The range of
tones present within any given Amethyst stone inspired the multi-tonal effect of this style, which
demonstrates a blend of white, light pinkish-violet and subtle deep purple tones.’
SUNSET
I love taking inspiration from aspects of nature and everywhere you look there is beauty and mystique to be seen. For this
particular image I wanted the colour and the gradient variation to take precedence. This was heavily influenced by that red
midnight sky that you only see every so often in the lead up to sunset. I am so intrigued and fascinated by the diverse
colours the sky showcases and I wanted to home in on this mauve, harbour mist hue. When you play around with different
influences it’s incredible to see what you can create.’
Chris Williams, International Colour Director, RUSH
22 focus

SKYLINE
‘The idea for this look came from the ever-changing colours of the sky at dusk and dawn. I love how the
warmth of the sun reflects onto the clouds, creating different shades of gold, orange and pink. I wanted to play
with these hues by placing the deepest at the root as if that was the horizon and then layering tones of peach
and gold through the mid-lengths, leaving the brightest blonde at the ends. The entire look was brought
together by a transparent gold gloss to soften and connect all the shades and add a dreamy effect.’
Hair: Tristan Eves
Hair: D&J Ambrose
STONEWORK
‘Things that always catch my eye in nature are broken concrete, weathered stone and watching how
stone starts to change colour when rain falls on it. We shot a fashion movie recently where our muse
had been stripped back to total purity and innocence. We dressed her in a nude-toned dress to create a
blank canvas. From there she emerged into a final, haute couture vision. The hair echoed this purity,
with the shade of natural sands. It symbolises skin, birth, pure untainted innocence and beginnings.
The essence of nature, really.’
BEYOND THE
FRINGE

BEYOND THE
FRINGE
ALL HAIL THE FRINGE! Long live the fringe! The queen of this season has actually never
stepped down from her throne. The fringe continues to hold the power to astonish and charm.
Short-short is the must trend for this spring (even for him!), but so short that it cannot
possibily go unnoticed. With irregular edges, full and round, long over the eyes, snipped or
curtain-style, they must attract attention. And if not the cut, the color will add oomph: from
the most natural to the most audacious, and everything in between.
Dai bordi irregolari, piena e rotonda, lunga sugli occhi, sfilata o a tendina, deve attirare
attenzione in ogni caso. E se non è il taglio, a donare carattere sarà il colore: dal più naturale
al più audace, passando per i pastelli.
LANG LEBE DER PONY, ein Hoch auf den Pony! Er steht im Mittelpunkt dieser Saison, doch
eigentlich schon seit geraumer Zeit.

British hairdressing is a meeting of equals in every sense.
There is nothing a man can do better than a girl... and here
are 4 hair champions who illustrate that fact so beautifully!
LINDA EVANS - THE MULTI-TASKER
PR, PA, copywriter, makeup artist and now blogger, Linda Evans has managed to
diversify her long career in the hairdressing industry to feed her own passion and
creativity, although she is probably best-known for her close working relationship
with Anthony Mascolo, as well as her enduring support of Tony Rizzo and
Alternative Hair
“As long as I can remember fashion and image have been absolutely important to me,
so working in the hairdressing industry ‘for eternity’, has been my perfect career,
enabling me to do so many diverse things. The fact I’ve never actually cut hair is
remarkable considering the number of step by steps I’ve written! I’m generally good
under pressure and can switch from PR to PA, to makeup artist when I have to and,
as most people who know me agree, I love talking, so being host of the Alternative
Hair Show is my dream job! I believe you should share what you know, so I’ve
recently started a blog: Behind the Woman, targeting middle-aged (& older) women
with ideas on makeup, hair and beauty and wellness.” Linda Evans
Art Direction: Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck; Hair: TONI&GUY International Artistic Team
SACHA MASCOLO-TARBUCK - THE GLOBAL TREND CREATOR
Following time in the salon, and success as part of the International Artistic team,
travelling globally for shows and seminars, Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck has worked her
way up in the family business to her current position as Global Creative Director of
TONI&GUY and label.m.
“After being born into a family long associated with hairdressing, I’ve always been
adamant to follow in my father’s footsteps. 28 years ago, I began working as an
assistant and stylist at our Sloane Square salon, and then started learning the trade as
an educator at the academy. This brought me into the world of session styling, where
I joined the International Artistic Team and worked as a show director, travelling
globally heading shows and seminars. In 2001, I began learning the business side of
the brand with my father. It was his drive, passion and vision that made TONI&GUY
the brand it is today. As Global Creative Director, I’ve led session teams at Fashion
Week, delivered the brand’s creative collections and overseen the production of our
annual look book. It was my personal passion for the fashion industry that lead me to
form a partnership with the BFC 14 years ago. With that came the brand’s Official
Sponsorship of London Fashion Week and other projects such as the Vogue Fashion
Fund. I’m lucky to have such a fantastic Artistic Team who support my vision and
allow my father’s legacy to live on.” TONI&GUY and label.m Global Creative Director,
Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck

SALLY BROOKS - THE IMAGE QUEEN
Sally Brooks is the current British Hairdresser of the Year for the second consecutive
year - and the first women to win the title in more than 11 years.
“I have been incredibly lucky to work with some amazing people throughout my
career, including Antoinette Beenders and Angelo Seminara while I was working at
the Trevor Sorbie salon, and of course Trevor himself. And now with my Brooks &
Brooks salon I have an incredible team who inspire me every day. With my collections,
I love simplicity and creating a moment in time. I love it when the hair, clothes and
photography become one and allows each to shine. Hairdressing is evolving and we
have to embrace that. I am constantly pushing my creativity and creating something
that is innovative and fresh. As an industry we want to be moving forward, not
looking back. I am lucky that I love all of my working days and respect every day.
However I do love a glass of wine at the end of a long day with my team!” Sally Brooks
Hair: Sally Brooks, British Hairdresser of the Year 2018

Hair: Fudge Professional
TRACY HAYES - THE COLOUR EXPERT
Tracy Hayes is the Global Head of Technical Training for Fudge Professional whose
main role is to build awareness around the Fudge Professional colour portfolio range.
“I’ve worked closely with the R&D team to re-launch both the Paintbox range and
more recently Headpaint. I’m also responsible for educating colourist educators from
around the world and presenting seminars and shows internationally. As a brand,
Fudge is also active within the fashion world, so I’ll often be working closely with
designers to create complementary colour techniques on wefts and wigs that work
seamlessly with each bespoke collection. Much of my career was as the Vidal Sassoon
UK Creative Colour Director and I’d be responsible for coaching and mentoring the
internationally renowned colour teams. I’m also a regular judge at the British
Hairdressing Awards for the colour category. My daily schedule at Fudge is eclectic
and varies from creating bespoke looks on exclusive clientele to educating in
international academies around the world. I can be shooting hair collections one day,
working on editorial shoots with magazines, whilst also collaborating with top
international session stylists, artists and designers. I am very fortunate to have always
been surrounded by amazing, inspiring people and count myself lucky to have
worked with some of the world’s greatest talents. I still enjoy every moment in this
fabulous industry as if it was my first.” Tracy Hayes
Curate,
create, educate
Hair brand Revlon Professional launches a seat of
educational excellence: its UK & Ireland Academy in Leeds.
In association with Westrow Academy and housed within the second floor of its prestigious Westrow House Academy on
Briggate in the heart of Leeds city centre, this innovative 1,500 sq ft space heralds a ten-year partnership that will offer
the Revlon Professional and American Crew technical education teams, National Artistic Ambassadors, American Crew
All Stars and brand affiliates unrivalled education in a state-of-the-art-setting. The bespoke space, which has been
developed and designed to meet the evolving educational needs of the brand, boasts a cutting-edge design that while
unique to the brand, also works in synergy with the Westrow Academy. Fully equipped, interactive and digital, this
innovative space has been designed to allow Revlon Professional’s brand partners in the UK and beyond to curate, create
and educate. With a focus on technical agility, the academy also boasts a new ‘Revlon Professional Colour Bar’ alongside
a backwash area designed for rituals and relaxation with mood enhancing lighting and accent walnut features for a
contemporary, premium feel.
The new Leeds academy is the perfect environment in which to encourage raw talent to flourish into creative excellence.
“Revlon Professional Education allows you to explore new territories and maximize your talent to create boldly,” explains
Nick Riley – Head of Education Revlon Professional. “Through training and upgrading you will expose, in a perfect
equation, your own ideas, your potential and your accomplishments for your professional success. We have a superb
interactive education curriculum which is easy to navigate which helps you to find your perfect courses to allow you to
grow and flourish.” Nick goes on to explain that the interactive brochure is sectioned into four chapters, from Discovery
86 education

through to Evolve, then to Elevate with the final chapter being Advanced. Each chapter has an array
of courses which allows students to map their pathway towards their ultimate educational goals.
In a further coup for the brand, Mark Leeson, one of the most prolific hairdressers in the world
with a career spanning 35 years, has recently been appointed its Global Artistic Ambassador for
Revlon Professional. Known for his creative and colour excellence, Mark is the obvious choice for a
brand which is committed to inspiring and supporting hair professionals.“We are thrilled that Mark
Leeson has taken such a creatively important role at Revlon Professional,” commented Lisa Jackson,
General Manager Revlon Professional Brands UK & Ireland. “His creativity combined with his
interest in inspiring colourists and hairdressers through education, platform shows and collections,
signals a really exciting time ahead for Revlon Professional".
Mark
Leeson
In our exclusive
Q&A, the newly
appointed
Global Artistic
Ambassador for
Revlon Professional
talks colour, care,
style, finish and, of
course, education!
What are you bringing to Revlon Professional Education that is different in 2019?
“Revlon Professional education is really important to the Mark Leeson team, to start with we are
delivering 40-45 days of education using the Revlon Professional Colour Portfolio. When putting the
education together we were determined to offer courses that we as salon owners would want to send
our own teams on. Offering tangible information and skills that students could take back to their own
salons and actually use and quantify. Within this we are creating S/S and A/W Collections focusing
more on accessible, ready to wear hair, with wearable looks our clients are want.”
How is education relevant to those who are qualified but building their columns and colour base?
“I find colour placement is key to building a busy column and a very important skill to learn at the
start of every colourist’s career. Trends, new technologies and techniques are essential, but for me
with every hair cut, the focus point is the colour and making a client the best version of themselves.
When doing photographic work (which we will be using to aid the courses) you see a 1D image.
But when you’re on a course and you have the educator at your side you are seeing a 360 view of the
colour placement (back, sides, face framing) and watching the look evolve, which in my opinion is
paramount to becoming an expert colourist. What’s lovely is we have a really strong and beautiful
portfolio of Revlon Professional colour and I think its healthy and essential to widen your horizon
from the salon floor and learn how other experts use colour and personalise to each customer.”
Why do you think it’s important to create a gorgeous finish to showcase your colour?
“Hair is the crowning glory, you wear it everyday and the ultimate finish is what makes the client feel
special. It’s important to show the client exactly how amazing their hair can look and the products
used to achieve this, giving them the ability to re-create at home. I always say the best hairdressers
are the ones that listen; asking what clients like and want to do with their hair is as important as
asking what they don’t like to be able to give them their best hair possible.”
What is the most important thing an educator can do on a course to make it successful?
“Planning! Set out the day with the students letting them know exactly the skills they will be taking
back to the salon. Patience, I can still get nervous when I’m educating even though I’ve done it for
over 35 years so I always empathise with the students and make them feel relaxed and ready to learn.
Reminding them why they are on the course and listen to their needs on the course.”
What would your one piece of advice to a student coming on one of your courses?
“The advice I would give is to make notes, and take advantage of being with that expert by asking as
many questions as you need - remember to draw from their experience as it’s really easy to
completely focus on the hair and forget to ask the questions.

Digital
stories
The Estetica global digital network was born
over twenty years ago to tell your stories.
To all the professionals who want to emerge:
believe in digital, we’ve got your backs.
Matteo Franceschini Beghini
Digital Executive Manager / EsteticaNetwork
Raise your hand if you still have doubts about using the Internet to talk passionately about your work.
If any of you have your hand up, you may be very surprised to know that there are, in fact, very few of
you who fall into that category.
It’s true, although nowadays it seems almost impossible to image that just a little over a decade ago
things were so completely different: Facebook had just be invented by a young Californian; Instagram at
the time was going to be called “Burbn” and was to be used to make reservations rather than photos.
Twitter existed, but with no trending topics. The top-of-the-range mobile phone was the iPhone 3 with a
camera lens resolution that today's selfie-obsessed generation would laugh at. Netflix rented DVDs and
Alexa was pure science-fiction.
Given that the world has changed unrecognisably in just ten years, it was inevitable that there would
also be a revolution in communications. Today, the idea of not having a dedicated social network profile
is almost inconceivable, except perhaps for those who deliberately and consciously avoid participating
in online forums. These days, human interaction occurs in exactly the same way as it has done for
Millennia: the communications evolution has passed through speech, writing, on paper then in print,
radio, telephone, TV... all the way through to the web and social media tools that we enjoy today. This is
a technological evolution that, like many others, has created a new model in human interaction. And
wherever there is a new medium of communicating, there's also a new way to tell stories. It may be our
own or belongs to your audience, describing personalised passion, profession and creativity.
Our magazine latched onto this trend very early on: just think that the web as we know it today (www.)
went public in 1993 and the domain-name of our first website (estetica.it) was registered in 1996.
In our industry today, the Estetica Magazine digital network is the widest and most diversified in the
The current rampant buzz of “Influencer Marketing”, means
that we at EsteticaNetwork have discovered a new way to
perform a job that we have already been carrying out for
decades,: firstly in print and then and then over the past
twenty years real time via the digital world. It's a job with a dual-purpose: to keep our professional
readers up to date on everything that happens in the global world of hairdressing, while guaranteeing
that each and every one of them has a secure and reliable source detached from a digital world blighted
by fake news which people diffuse in the hope of collecting a few more followers or click-throughs.
So this is a promise that goes beyond the commitment that we renew daily: whoever works in the digital
world like we do has to crunch numbers every day, sometimes more than once a day.
As 2019 begins, it's been a great satisfaction for us to discover how successful our digital platforms
continue to be and to share with our readers the phenomenal statistics showcased in the box below.
Above all they confirm the promise we have always made to our readers: follow us as you have always
done and we will continue to share fantastic and uplifting stories from the world of hairdressing with
the passion and integrity which we are known worldwide. So tell us your stories on Instagram, on
Facebook, on the web; write to us, tag us, engage with us on your digital journey and we will always be
there for you: side-by-side with the people who create beauty - the hairdressers of the world.
1. Take a triangle section
from the middle parting to
the back of the ear. Leave out
the perimeter in line with the
section take a section from the
occipital bone to the back
of the ear, then join the sides
into the front perimeter.
2/3. Cut a guide through the
perimeter starting at the sides
then working around the
head in a circular motion.
4. Create a halo section leaving
out the middle area.
5. Work your way up the back
of the head in horizontal sections.
Using the natural fall, create a
weight line at the back in line
with the jaw.
6. Work in horizontal sections
up one side, following your
guideline from step one.
Repeat on opposite side.
7. Take a vertical 1cm wide
section from the back to use
9
10
as your guide. Pull the hair up 90
degrees and use the short length
as a guide to cut a square layer.
COLOUR
8. Following the sectioning pattern
of the hair cut take the whole back
disconnection as one section.
Divide the front area (cut shorter)
into five sections. Five sections: a
small triangle through the centre
parting, two very fine triangles
below on the front hair line and
two rectangles following the head
shape around the ear.
9. Apply Formula A to the
back section, starting from the
roots and continuing through
to the mid lengths and ends.
10. Apply Formula B to the side
sections starting at the roots and
continuing through to the mid
lengths and ends.
followed by applying Formula
C onto the mid lengths and ends.
12. Finally apply Formula D
onto the centre triangle.
13. Rinse and shampoo the
bleach off the two fine triangle
sections once the desired lift
has been achieved and then
saying; ‘we’re the best-kept secret!’”
explains Anthony. “FUSE allows us
fantastic work of other people with
whom we work and collaborate.
In today’s digital world, information
is so quick and I really believe,
when it comes to ‘getting it out
there we need to stay on top,
I think FUSE is the perfect platform
for us to do that.”
Visit tigifuse.com to discover FUSE:
“The idea for FUSE was sparked by my work on the magazine,
Infringe. FUSE allows us to share all that we do, from films,
step-by-steps, behind the scenes, and the people behind TIGI,
as well showcase the fantastic work of people that work with
us, and in the industry as a whole. FUSE has a strong future,
where we can work with TIGI partners globally, helping them
to share their work and their vision - it’s the perfect platform
for us to do that.” Anthony Mascolo

technology is constantly improving
to ensure that the hair’s condition
isn’t compromised during the
colouring process,” explains Fudge
Professional Global Head of
Technical Training, Tracy Hayes.
“We’ve added a new Triple
Conditioning Complex that’s made
to replenish the broken bonds and
condition the hair from within,
whilst giving it an extra boost of
