MURRAYSHALL HOTEL & GOLF COURSES PERTH, PERTHSHIRE PH2 7PH Visit Scotland and you are never too far from a golf course. From the dramatic coastal backdrop of a links course, to the majestic beauty of parkland courses or the demands of a game on heathland, it's a golfer's paradise with over 550 different courses. Teeing off from the same spot as golfing legends such as Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Jack Nicklaus is more than a possibility in the country which is home to golf. For a stay which seamlessly blends Scotland's history and heritage with two 18-hole courses, Murrayshall Hotel and Golf Courses in Scone, Perthshire, is a scene stealer. It holds the title for Best Golf Hotel 2018 as voted for by golfers and in conjunction with Bunkered, UK Golfer and VisitScotland. In addition, its location is perfect for history buffs as Scone Palace was where Macbeth, Robert the Bruce and Charles II were crowned. The Palace displays the needlework of Mary, Queen of Scots and it was also where Queen Victoria would stay on her way to the Highlands. Her state rooms are now part of the visitor's viewing experience. The road to Murrayshall Hotel and Golf Courses is tree-lined, leading to a 365 acre estate which dates back hundreds of years. The hotel is set on a hillside with views over the manicured golf greens and the impressive Perthshire countryside. Golfers have two courses, each challenging for different reasons. 14

Tee Time! The parkland Murrayshall course is long with wide tree-lined fairways and water hazards. It has six par 5 holes and at 6,441 yards, it’s a par 73 which will take about four hours to get round. The easier Lynedoch can be played as a 10 or 18-hole layout. Expect tight fairways with Scots pine trees narrowing the view of fairways and greens. Golfers and guests have a choice of dining with the Stutts Bar providing a relaxed atmosphere for family meals and light bites for golfers after taking on the front nine. While the award-winning Lynedoch Brasserie takes dining up a notch or two for a more formal occasion. Opened last year and with head chef Craig Jackson at the helm, the menu is seasonal, local and exciting. Enjoy pheasant breast with a shallot puree, burnt leeks and chestnuts or a beautifully poached fish with shellfish and a tomato, fennel and saffron broth. With expertly paired wines, delicious desserts and a soul pleasing cheese board, dining at Lynedoch will not disappoint. The hotel has a choice of accommodation from classic and cosy single and double rooms to family rooms and luxurious suites. There's also an excellent choice of golf packages for different days of the week. Whether you're after one night away with one round or you fancy the five night golf tour package which includes additional play at Blairgowrie and Crieff golf courses along with a visit to the Famous Grouse Distillery, Murrayshall Hotel and Golf Courses will certainly make for a memorable and satisfying stay. 15

THE GREENWAY HOTEL & SPA CHELTENHAM, GLOUCESTERSHIRE GL51 4UG A 16th century luxury manor house built in beautiful Cotswold stone and located on the outskirts of the stunning regency town of Cheltenham has certainly captured our attention this month. The Elan Spa at the award-winning Greenway Hotel is the kind of luxurious fluffy towel spa where you know you will be cocooned in comfort, where your senses will be gently woken and your body will be pummelled and purified to leave you feeling polished, primed and totally at peace with the world. Combining Gloucestershire country chic with a large serving of glamour, the spa features exposed brickwork, ancient beams and a modern, vibrant décor all perfectly blending to create a sanctuary of relaxation. There are five rooms in which to indulge in a personalised treatment from world renowned experts ESPA, and there's a lovely hydrotherapy pool, sauna and steam room too. The terrace area is another inviting space for a spot of al fresco relaxation or a dip in the hot tub. Spa aficionados should make time for a glass of something chilled in the sleek and rather lovely Orchard Brasserie which overlooks the Elan Spa gardens. Alternatively, reserve a table for an extended lunch date to round off a morning of pampering. 16

Therapy Time! For guests enjoying a stay at the Greenway Hotel and Spa the Garden Restaurant is a touch of therapy too. The oak panelled walls, grand fire place and stunning décor combined with the views over the lily pond and sunken garden create a sophisticated backdrop for superb dining. Under head chef Marcus McGuinness, guests can enjoy a seasonal menu using the best of Gloucestershire produce as well as ingredients from the hotel's garden. Marcus is also a keen forager so don't be surprised to see wild plants, herbs, fungi and fruit on the menu too. Whether on a mid-week or a weekend overnight spa break, evening dining is included so spa guests will get to enjoy the award-winning dishes from the daily menu. The weekend spa package also includes a bottle of champagne! The choice of accommodation at Greenway Hotel and Spa is another treat within itself! Stunning suites, private lodges, large and luxurious master rooms, along with classic, superior and deluxe en-suite guest rooms provide total comfort with luxuries which won't go unnoticed. 17

The rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge universities dates back hundreds of years to when they were the only universities in England and Wales. With 800 years of competition between the two academic heavy weights it is not surprising sports events between the two have become a part of history and now attract audiences, fans and followers from beyond the hallowed halls of academia. 20

Oxford Cambridge 21

The Varsity Match takes place at Twickenham Stadium, the home of English rugby. The men's rugby match has been held here since 1921 and after 137 matches, Oxford University RFC has won 60 times with Cambridge University RFC just ahead with 63 wins. Unusually for rugby, there have been 14 ties. For the women, Cambridge is slightly behind with 13 compared to Oxford's 16 victories in what is now one of the world's biggest amateur women's rugby matches. With a Twickenham audience of 25,000 and a TV audience of half a million, the appeal and excitement of both matches is not likely to wane any time soon. Diliff [CC BY-SA 3.0] The other big sports event is the Boat Race on the River Thames which will take place on Sunday 7 April. Attracting a TV audience of 15 million and over a quarter of a million to the banks of the Thames between Putney and Chiswick, rivalry on the river between the two blues is often intense! The men's race dates back 190 years and in that period there has been a dead heat, two Oxford mutinies, disruption caused by a swimming protester and the sinking of both crews on several occasions. The women's race, although dating back over 70 years, has only been held on the River Thames since 2015. The Cambridge women's crew are currently ahead of Oxford by 43 wins to 30 while the light blues of Cambridge men are leading 83 to 80 over the dark blues of Oxford. 22

Sporting occasions are not the only connections the two universities share; both have botanical gardens too. The Cambridge Botanic Garden was created by Professor John Stevens Henslow who mentored Charles Darwin. The 40 acre site for teaching and research has a collection of With world class reputations and superb facilities attracting students from across the globe, university history and heritage drawing tourists to the two cities and sporting rivalry pulling in an ever-growing international audience, the tradition of Oxford versus Cambridge is sure to reign for many more years.
