VICTIMS: Mian Naeem Rashid, 51, and his son, Talha Naeem,
21, were killed when a gunman opened fire at Masjid Al Noor.
‘I like police!’ – young boy’s inspirational message
•From page 1
Fifty lives were claimed in the
terror attack.
Mr Rashid approached the accused
gunman and attempted to
stop him. But died of his wounds
in hospital.
Sergeant Martindale’s nephew,
Tyla Harrison-Hunt, married into
the Pakistani community and
converted to Islam six years ago,
through his wife, Fada Khan.
Ms Khan’s uncle is Mr Rashid
and Talha is her cousin.
Said Sergeant Martindale: “My
nephew Tyla said to the little
man (Ayaan), now you’re part of
my family, this is your uncle as
well, you can give him a hug. He
held his arms out and said: ‘I like
police!’
Mr Harrison-Hunt said Ayaan
now wants to be a policeman.
“He saw uncle and said he
wanted to be a policeman . . .
unfortunately, he’s one of the kids
who doesn’t have a dad anymore,”
he said.
Mr Rashid and Talha leave behind
mother and wife, Ambreen
Naeem, Ayaan and another son,
Abdullah Naeem, who is 19.
Mr Rashid, a teacher and tutor,
was a banker in Pakistan before
moving to New Zealand with his
family when his eldest son, Talha
MEMORY: Arist Paul X Walsh honoured Mian Naeem Rashid in a mural in an Auckland
car park after the victim lunged at the accused shooter at the Deans Ave mosque.
was 11-years-old.
Talha was a civil engineer and
had just started a new job.
Mr Rashid has since been
praised for his courageous actions
by Pakistan Prime Minister
Imran Khan, who said he would
be recognised with a national
bravery award.
Mr Harrison-Hunt said his wife
and family are “doing okay.”
“The problem wasn’t the week
where we lost our loved ones, the
real problem is how do we pick
up the pieces after that? There are
29 kids under the age of 18 who
have been left behind without a
mother or father. That will be the
defining factor in how these kids
get on, who can be role models
for them, who can help the ones
that need help.”
Mr Harrison-Hunt told The
Star of the close call he and other
family members had with the
shootings.
“That’s our mosque. We go
there every Friday, like how
people go to Sunday Mass every
week. We go to a lot of night
prayers; I got with my father-inlaw
a lot. He goes there every day.”
Mr Harrison-Hunt and his wife
were in Melbourne on the day of
the shootings, visiting his sister.
They received a text from a
friend, alerting them of the shooting
and frantically tried to contact
Ms Khan’s family.
Her father had been running
late on his way to the mosque on
the day of the shootings.
The accused gunman was inside
the mosque when he arrived,
three minutes late, to see people
fleeing.
Sergeant Martindale said it’s
“fantastic” Ayaan was inspired to
be a police officer after meeting
him.
“Absolutely amazing. I offered
him a ride in police car at the
time, so maybe once all the dust
has settles I’ll make that happen.”
