THE WINNER of the
country’s first ever Winter
Olympic medal has proven
to be just as talented with
the surf after winning
two titles in her first
competition.
Annalise Coberger
– who became the first
southern hemisphere athlete
to win a medal at the
Winter Olympics when she
won silver in the slalom
at the 1992 games – won
both the over 40 women’s
longboard division and the
women’s logger division
at the Duke Festival of
Surfing in New Brighton
WITH ST Kentigern
College’s scholarship
scheme dividing opinion
this week it only seems
fitting our metro rugby
competition is about to
kick-off and display the
effect of its own onesided
affair caused by
scholarships.
Lincoln University will
go for their fifth straight
premier metro title when
the competition kicks off on
Saturday. So, the question
begs, can anyone stop them?
Probably not.
The scary thought for
any opposition is that if
the Crusaders elect to
send some of their fringe
backline players to club
rugby then Lincoln has
the look of a Super Rugby
backline with the likes of
Eri Enari, Brett Cameron,
Caleb Makene and Ngani
Punivai.
While the top talent
coming out of secondary
school this year appears to
local sport
Proudly brought to you by...
recently.
Coberger, 47, only
began surfing four years
ago when her husband
convinced her the family
should give it a go.
“I’m just doing it for
fun,” said Coberger.
“I didn’t even really want
to go in the comp, but my
friends made me.”
In the over 40 women’s
longboard Coberger scored
an 11.8 to win ahead of
multiple time senior age
group national champion
Donna Henderson. In
the women’s logger event
Coberger scored a 10.8
to pip Auckland’s Sasha
Brownlie who scored 10.1.
be spread more throughout
other Christchurch clubs
this year there’s a good
chance it’s a one-off.
Christ’s College come
St Kents College player
Isiah Punivai and fellow
former St Kents prop
Tamaiti Williams have
joined Burnside. However,
if a club takes on a Crusaders
academy player who is
attending Canterbury University
rather than Lincoln
University the club has to
pay a contribution towards
the player’s scholarship fee.
The other side of the
argument much like St
Kents if the opportunity
it creates for players. You
simply cant ignore the timing
of Lincoln University’s
Tower JuncTion
Winter
Olympian
at home on the water
For 25 years Coberger
remained the only New
Zealander to win a Winter
Olympic medal after her
effort at the 1992 games in
Albertville, France.
She became the first New
Zealander to win a Europa
Cup event and was the slalom
champion in 1991 and
1992. Coberger also briefly
headed the world rankings
in 1992-93.
She narrowly missed a
medal at the 1993 world
championships in Japan
when she was ruled to have
missed a gate.
At the 1994 Lillehammer
Olympics she crashed on
her first run.
Two sides to the arguments
over rugby scholarships
One-eyed Cantab
Gordon Findlater
gordon.findlater@starmedia.kiwi
scholarship coinciding
with an era of dominance
by Canterbury (nine titles
in 11 years) and the Crusaders
(back to back Super
Rugby titles).
The only question that
remains is if the cost to an
intriguing club competition
is worth the pay-off at
the elite level.
It’s hard to argue against
something that is clearly
benefiting rugby at the
top level in Canterbury.
However, I’d really love
just for once to be looking
ahead to the club season
and genuinely wonder
who might take it out this
season.
