Westgate Easter Egg Hunt!
Once again, the Westgate social committee will be hosting an Easter Egg Hunt in the pool/park area on Saturday, April 20 th . Please email the social
committee if you can pitch in and help make this a great event for our Westgate families: social@westgatetx.net.
We’re ordering over 4,000 eggs for more fun for the kids! If you’d like to help supplement the eggs that the HOA is providing and add to the kids’ fun,
please fill 12 plastic eggs (with goodies that are NOT chocolate); please drop them off at 7422 Vine Grove Ct. by Wednesday, April 17 th .
On the morning of the egg hunt, we will hide the eggs at the park before 10 AM, please show up around 9:30 AM to help hide eggs and the activities will
begin at 10 AM. Each child will hunt and collect eggs in different sections of the park separated by age group.
We do need volunteers to help keep this organized and to help hide eggs. If we have enough people sign up in advance, we’d like to have games and
races. If you’d like to help and for questions, email social@westgatetx.net.
Last year, the kids had so much fun finding toys and goodies in the eggs. We hope to see you there!
Fire Ant Week! APRIL 7th THROUGH APRIL 13th
It is fire ant season again. WE WOULD LIKE ALL RESIDENTS TO PARTICIPATE in FIRE ANT WEEK
by treating your yard for fire ants during the week of April 7 th through April 13 th . Signs will be
posted at the entry to our subdivision as a reminder. According to research as Texas A&M, if we
all participate, we will be fire ant free. If you don’t participate, your neighbors will pass their
fire ants on to you. This is only twice a year project-once in Spring and once in Fall. The optimal
method for treatment is when the temperature is between 65 and 90 degrees and the following
two step method is used:
• Step 1. Once or twice per year, usually in spring and fall, broadcast a bait-formulated insecticide
or use an outdoor bait station product as directed on the label. Most conventional baits are
applied at a rate of 1 to 1 1⁄2 pounds of product per acre, although some products are applied
at higher rates.
• Step 2. Preferably, wait several days or more after broadcasting the bait and then treat nuisance
ant colonies (such as those in sensitive or high-traffic areas) using an individual mound treatment method. Otherwise, be patient and wait for the bait
treatment to work.
For more detailed information, go to www.extension.org and search “fire ant treatment.” Please participate and we’ll all benefit and make it safer for
our kids and pets.
Westgate Spring
Garage Sale
SATURDAY, MAY 4, 2018
Westgate’s deed restrictions state that we can only have
garage sales on designated days for the community; having
them any other time can earn you an immediate fine. So,
it’s time again for our Westgate Garage Sale; this year, the
Spring event will happen on Saturday, May 4 th . While you’re
spring cleaning, go through that extra “stuff” you have in
your closets, declutter your house and make some extra
money!
That week, we’ll have signs out at the entrances of the
neighborhood to advertise the event for the community.
You can put additional signs to direct people to your house,
but please remove them after your sale is over.
Splashpad and
Pool Season
The pool will be open weekends in May, Tuesday
through Sunday during June through August,
then weekends again in September. The
splashpad will be open spring break through
October, depending on weather.
We have installed gate access cards to enter
the pool and splashpad. Once you receive your
card, you should keep it and use the same card
as long as you live in Westgate. If you need to
replace yours, you must fill out the form, which
you can get by calling Inframark or downloading
it from our website (www.westgatetx.net). Send
the form to Inframark and they will send you the access card.
• Keep this card as long as you are a resident in Westgate. We will not be
replacing them every year like we did the pool tags.
• The first card is free. Any subsequent cards must be purchased. Up to two
cards per house.
• Each household can bring up to six people to the pool. It does not matter
how many cards you have.
• Tenants must get the card through their landlord.
Difficulty Paying Your Annual Dues?
If you haven’t yet paid your Westgate fees for 2019 and anticipate
not being able to pay on time, be sure to call Inframark (281-870-
0585) to discuss getting on a payment plan before more fees are
tacked on-from the attorney, etc. $635 can turn into $1000+ very
quickly. Even if you don’t think you can pay all at once, you need
to call Inframark to make payment arrangements; DON’T WAIT and
cost yourself MORE money.
These dues help pay for landscaping, electricity, water,
refurbishing and adding amenities and pool management, among
other things. It helps Westgate continue to be a great community
with stable or increasing property values. If you’d ever like details
of how your dues are spent, you can always ask our management
company. Also, go to our annual meeting and you will receive a
copy of the financials.
Why You Should Always Call
the Non-Emergency Number
When an incident happens - suspicious person or vehicle, someone
rifles through your car, etc - call the non-emergency number
whether anything was taken or not, whether damage was done or
not.
Our contract officer spoke to some residents while he was
responding to a call. They informed him that they did share info on
social media but didn’t call HCSO. HCSO is not monitoring Social
media.
HCSO put their non-contract officers where there are problems.
No calls = no problems. One call a week or so does not prompt
a concern. But if everyone who posted on social media called it
in, it would be, then HCSO would be justified in allocating more
resources in our area to combat crime: 713-221-6000.
2019 - Firing On All Cylinders
by Westgate Resident and Realtor Tim Bogott
The Houston economy has been very good the last couple of years and is
now firing on all cylinders thanks to the tax cut legislation and business
deregulation reforms. The Houston economy should pick up more steam
in 2019 based off the economic gains, cited by Dr. Ted Jones, Chief
Economist for Stewart Title in his real estate and economic outlook for
2019 presentation given on February 14, 2019.
KEY ECONOMIC HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PRESENTATION:
1. Personal Income in 2018 grew 3.2%, largest since 2009.
2. Houston, The Woodlands and Sugar Land added 114,700 new jobs in
2018.
3. For the first time in 75 years, the United States will be a Net Oil Exporter.
4. Oil companies no longer need $50-$60 a barrel pricing to be profitable
with new improved drilling techniques and technology.
5. The resurgence in U.S.-based manufacturing will continue as more
companies take advantage of the business deregulation, tax reforms and
cheaper energy prices.
TWO REPORTS SUPPORT THE CONTINUED GROWTH AND
STRENGTH OF THE HOUSTON REAL ESTATE MARKET:
1. Zillow reported the 2018 tax cut legislation has provided an extra $80
Billion in income and this money is projected to be spent on real estate
between 2018-2021.
2. A study by the consulting firm Accenture, states the Millennials (25-34)
will benefit from the largest transfer of wealth in history of an estimated
$30 trillion from the Baby Boomers.
Do You Know Your Deed Restrictions?
In an effort to educate our residents, each month we highlight some deed
restriction or other item that needs improvement in Westgate:
GARAGE SALES: In the Declaration of Covenants…, Article VII, section
B., pg. 11: “Garage sales or yard sales…[are] prohibited. The Association
may…provide for a community wide garage sale.” Also, Texas state
law considers garage sales an “uncurable” violation that can incur an
IMMEDIATE fine. Our fine policy states that fine will be $50.
Now is the time to start scheduling your next Generac
Generator maintenance. This ensures your generator's
functionality and overall reliability. We partner with
Generac to provide our customers with the highest
quality generator services. Call our professionals to
schedule your next maintenance today! Not a generator
owner, yet? We can provide you with a detailed quote to
install one.
Please only have garage sales on community wide garage sales days. We
have one in the spring and one in the fall. Having them at any other time
may result in an immediate fine. Why? Unexpected traffic concerns and
parking congestion, as well as other kinds of disruptions, occur during
random garage sales in the neighborhood. Also, people leaving their
signs up after the sale is over increases the trash on the common areas.
Having a community wide garage sale enables people to have warning to
prepare for garage sales and limits the number of times they have to deal
with difficulties, but also allows homeowners to occasionally have sales
to clear out their clutter. It’s a compromise.
Following these instructions helps keep our neighborhood looking neat
and thus keeps up our property values. Home condition tends to be a
contagious condition-good or bad. Let’s be considerate of our neighbors!
Procedure When Filing a Report
with the Sheriff’s Dept.
If you ever have to file a report with the Sheriff’s Department, whether
after calling 911 or the nonemergency number (713-221-6000), be sure to
let the deputy know that Westgate has a contract with the Sheriff’s Dept.
through our MUD district (Harris County MUD #70). That way, the incident
will be reported to our contract deputies, giving them information on
what to look for in our community. Also, be sure to report the issue to our
Crime Watch committee at crimewatch@westgatetx.net. They discuss
the problems with our deputies as well.
Recommended Tradespeople List on
the Westgate Facebook Page
Have you ever needed to call someone for repairs or to have work done,
but you didn’t want to just pick someone out of the yellow pages? Well,
we’ve begun a document that is our neighborhood’s personal “Angie’s
List:” “Recommended Tradespeople And Businesses.” All people and
businesses listed on it are recommended by people in Westgate who have
had personal experiences with them. We also have a list for businesses
actually owned by Westgate residents called “Westgate Residents who
provide Services.” If you are a resident who owns a business, provide a
description of your services, price range, history of your business, etc.
Support your neighbors by checking it out; you might find what you need
very close to home! To access the documents, go to www.facebook.com
and search for “Westgate Subdivision.” Look at the top of the page under
“Files” and you’ll see them there! Add yours to the list!
Annual Superintendent’s Fun Run
And Festival Raises Record $110,000
Nearly 6,000 Cypress-Fairbanks ISD staff, students, community members
and business partners came together at the Berry Center and Cy-Fair FCU
Stadium for the sixth annual Superintendent’s Fun Run and Festival on
March 2 nd . The fundraiser culminated with CFISD and Memorial Hermann
Cypress Hospital representatives presenting a check worth a record
$110,000 to the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF).
The event featured a 5K run and 1-mile family-friendly walk/run. Both had
new course layouts, with the 5K race taking place through Towne Lake
and Lone Star College-CyFair. The family path included the walkways on
the stadium’s home side and featured high school inflatable tunnels on
the field and spirit teams encouraging participants. Sponsor and vendor
booths, food trucks, bounce houses and student performances made the
day even more special for all event guests.
“We had great crowds and we brought in a record total. I can’t sufficiently
thank our CFISD employees, community and of course, our title sponsor,
Memorial Hermann Cypress,” said Dr. Mark Henry, CFISD superintendent
of schools. “It’s just a great event. When you’re in a large community and
a large district, a community event like this brings us all a little closer
together. That’s what it’s really all about.”
The event drew approximately 4,400 total race participants. In addition,
1,400 registered for the sleep-in pass, which allowed an option for those
who wanted to support the CFEF but were unable to attend. Nearly 550
students volunteered, while 18 student performance groups entertained
race and festival participants. Student performances included the
Cypress Lakes High School R.E.D. Storm, Tipps Elementary School
Synergy Squad, Pope Elementary School percussion ensemble, Francone
Elementary School Hoopers and M. Robinson Elementary School choir.
“This community comes out and supports Cy-Fair ISD and the Cy-Fair
Educational Foundation and Memorial Hermann Cypress is just proud to
be a small part of that,” said Heath Rushing, Memorial Hermann Cypress
and Katy senior vice president and CEO. “The community supports us
and we can’t do what we do without that support, so when there are
opportunities for us to give back and help provide scholarships for
students within the district, it’s really easy for us to come out here and be
part of such a great event.”
Cpas Helping Schools Grants More
Than $8,700 To Cfisd Schools
The Houston CPA Society awarded $8,713 in grant funds to five CFISD
schools as part of the CPAs Helping Schools program, culminating the Fall
2018 cycle with a reception in February in which the district accounted
for more than 40 percent of the funds awarded.
The primary focus of the CPAs Helping Schools program is to provide
improved educational opportunities for all students, especially atrisk
students or those in need of special programs to enable quality
learning environments. Since 2002, the program has awarded more
than $550,000 to over 200 schools in the 13-county area it serves, with
financial support helping establish and continue initiatives for math and
technology, library programs, science materials, fine arts programs and
health awareness.
In total for the Fall 2018 cycle, CPAs Helping Schools received 20 requests,
with the committee fully or partially funding 13 proposals for a total
of $19,613. Carol Spencer, the society’s member services coordinator,
oversees the application process. At the reception, Houston CPA Society
Board of Directors members Jim Stinson, Bradley Elgin, Kristie Ondracek,
Darrell Groves and Brian Baumler, along with CPAs Helping Schools
committee members David Garza and Laura Mardis, presented grants to
the following CFISD schools:
• Duryea Elementary School - support for the “Making Informational Text
Relevant w/Hands-On Learning” project;
• Hancock Elementary School - support of the school’s “Math in Motion!”
National Volunteer Month
National Volunteer month in the United States takes place in the month
of April. This month is dedicated to honoring all of the volunteers in
our communities as well as encouraging volunteerism throughout the
month. April became National Volunteer Month as part of President
George H. W. Bush’s 1000 Points of Light campaign in 1991. In the United
States, volunteerism is instilled at a young age. In many parts of the
country, it is the cornerstone of summer vacation or woven into after
school programs. Most organizations in small towns, rural counties and
the largest cities would not function without volunteers. In some families,
the baton of volunteerism is handed down generation after generation.
Rural fire and ambulance departments remain staffed due to the efforts
of volunteers. The underprivileged receive much needed medical care
thanks to volunteers. Long overdue repairs and upgrades are made
to a senior women’s home thanks to an organization’s annual call for
donations and skilled workers. A woman answers a call on a suicide
hotline because she cared enough to give up a few hours to train and
listen to someone desperate and alone. A team sets up tables at a soup
kitchen every week. Another group delivers meals to men and women
who can no longer cook for themselves. Boys and girls sell ice cream
sandwiches during a fair to raise money for a homeless shelter.
Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes. They pick a cause and make
a difference in someone’s life. Sometimes the difference a drop in the
bucket. Other times it creates a tidal wave of change. From the anonymous
volunteers who donate their resources to those whose efforts are part of
larger national organizations like 4-H, Boy and Girl Scouts of America or
American Red Cross or a local grassroots group, their missions provide
valuable support to communities in times of need.
31ST ANNUAL B. F. ADAM GOLF CLASSIC
May 9, 2019, the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) will celebrate
its 31 st annual B. F. Adam Golf Classic at BlackHorse Golf Club. Allegiance
Bank joins the Foundation as our new tournament underwriter. IBI
Group, Linebarger Attorneys at Law and Zenith Real Estate Group are
supporting CFEF again this year as Platinum Sponsors. Gold Sponsors
include Cromdane Steel, Division One Construction, PBK, Salas O’Brien
and Satterfield & Pontikes Construction. The Backyard Grill joins
Carl’s BBQ as our dinner sponsors. Caldwell Companies has been the
tournament lunch sponsor since 2011.
One of the largest non-celebrity tournaments in the Houston area, the
B.F. Adam Golf Classic is a prime example of our trustees and community
business partners working together to raise scholarship funds for
students of Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. Our first tournament raised $3,500
and over the past 30 years the B. F. Adam Golf Classic has successfully
raised almost $3.5M.
CFEF was established in 1970 as a non-profit to raise money to fund
scholarships for high school graduates. Through the generosity of the
Cy-Fair community and commitment from the Board of Trustees, the
Foundation has grown tremendously with scholarship awards totaling
more than $8.5M to graduating seniors from Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. CFEF
is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, all contributions are tax deductible,
as allowed by the law.
Still on the Fence About Hosting an
Exchange Student?
You don’t have any kids? Are you a single parent? Same sex couple? An
empty nester? This is not a problem, we place our students in all kinds
of families!
You’re not rich? Neither am I! Your exchange student comes with their
own spending money and health insurance. All you provide is room/
board and three meals a day. Oh and TLC…but that’s free.
Live in the middle of nowhere? Small town? Not a big deal. Some kids prefer
to get away from the hustle and bustle of big cities. The exchange students
also do pretty well in small schools, as they usually get to be the center of
attention and make friends rather quickly. Our students also get chances
to travel to New York, Washington DC, Hawaii and California… so they can
get their fill of the city life and return back to the peaceful sounds of nature.
Do you consider yourself a boring person? More than likely this is not true
and you should quit being so hard on yourself. Your student will make
friends. Your student will meet other exchange students. Your student will
attend activities offered by our program. Your student will get involved in
sports and school clubs. Your purpose is not to entertain them. But you
might find that you bring a little adventure to each other’s lives.
Kids are too young? Great! Lots of students love young kids and your kids
will love them. It’s beneficial to introduce your kids to new cultures at a
very young age. You’re preparing them to accept people no matter what
the religion, color of their skin,or language they speak. That my friend, is
good parenting.
Don’t hold back! This is a great experience for both parties. You get the
opportunity to change a child’s life. You get the satisfaction of seeing
them grow, even after they leave your home into becoming a doctor, a
lawyer, a diplomat, artist, teacher… the list goes on. And you contributed
to that success! And the best part of it all, is you gain another family
member for life. We need people like you to give these kids a chance.
STS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to place
exchange students in our area. If you are interest in hosting, please
contact me at 832-455-7881 or at vicki.stsfoundation@yahoo.com. I’ll be
happy to answer any question you might have and get you started on
hosting your very own student!
CELEBRATE PASSOVER IN NORTHWEST HOUSTON
This year beginning on sundown of April 19 th , we will be Celebrating
Passover, marking exactly 3,331 years since the Exodus from ancient
Egypt! Few Jewish holidays evoke the same warm sentiments as
Passover. Memories of family and friends gathered as the four cups of
wine are poured, the four questions asked and the Matzah served, all
contribute to Passover’s popularity in the Jewish community. Bringing
the warmth and tradition of this festival to the Cy-Fair Community,
Chabad of Cypress & Northwest Houston is inviting all Jewish residents
to participate in the Community Seder to be held on Friday night, April
19 th .
“The Seder takes participants through the wondrous liberation of our
ancestors from Egyptian bondage, while sharing the relevance and
beauty of the age old festival in our modern lives.” Included in the Seder
will be a delectable catered dinner paired with a variety of fine imported
wines and handmade round ‘Shmurah’ Matzah.
“Passover is not simply a celebration of the historic liberation of an
ancient people,” Rabbi Levi Marinovsky, Director of Chabad of Chabad of
Cypress, stated in the press release. “Passover is about our own personal
liberation - physically, emotionally and spiritually. Passover inspires us
to break free from the shackles restraining us from reaching new heights
- in our lives, relationships and connection with God.”
Chabad’s community seder is part of a global Passover campaign that
began in 1954, when the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of
blessed memory, considered the most influential rabbi in modern history,
launched the Shmurah Matzah initiative as part of an effort to create
awareness and promote observance of the holiday. An estimated four
million hand-baked Shmurah Matzahs will be distributed by the Chabad-
Lubavitch movement this year. If you would like a Free Handmade
Shmurah Matzah delivered directly to your door, please email rabbi@
chabadcypress.com.
All are welcome to join the community seder, regardless of Jewish
affiliation or background. To make a reservation or for more details,
contact Rabbi@chabadcypress.com or 832-651-6964. To Learn More
about Passover visit: ChabadCypress.com/Passover.
serving the Cypress, Jersey Village, Copperfield and other Northwest
Houston areas with meaningful and joyful opportunities for Jewish
living, learning and celebration.
ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON SCHOLA CANTORUM
Do you want your children to become lifelong servants of the Church?
Singing in a children’s choir is a great way to help that. The St. Elizabeth
its after-school choir program. The choir is responsible for enriching the
Mass on 10:30 on Sundays and rehearses every Wednesday from 3:45-5
PM. Unique in the area, the choir focuses on singing music from the rich
Catholic tradition, including chant and polyphony, as well as the finest
modern church music. Time is devoted to building the children’s skills of
music reading, vocal technique, thinking about the words and the structure
and meaning of the Mass. Service hours are available for older students. For
Gardening Tips For April
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great
many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you
buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying
ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material
and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6”
below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will
aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate
termite inspections.
• Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12”
- 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that
is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can
grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of
the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover
plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy
that grows on your walls.
• Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray
eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to
resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The
fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from
occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy
winter’s dormancy.
• Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop
brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin
and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a)
lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering: Water once per week (unless you
get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”)
for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. •
Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy
deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more
drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!!
