A word from the Principal...
Welcome,
You will be aware that we have adopted the 6 Es as our school values and are focussing on them
in school. This week, there have been a number of instances that have really shown me how evident
one of these values is in many of our children already. That value is ‘ethical’.
There are 3 particularly ethical conversations that I have had this week, the first being with a Y6
who is desperate to ensure we play our part in protecting the environment. He wanted me to
write this in the newsletter:
If everyone could cut out using one piece of plastic every day, it would help the environment greatly. If we
could save 200 pieces of plastic a day, that equals 73000 pieces of plastic a year! We would really appreciate
it if you could help the environment.
It would be great if we could all support Oliver, by attempting to do this.
The second was a conversation with our School Parliament. They wanted to discuss the possibility
of classes having their own pets. We discussed how research shows that they help support
behaviour and are excellent for children who need additional nurture, but that animal charities
are strongly against the idea on the grounds of welfare. Following this discussion, the majority of
parliament members voted against the idea of class pets as they don’t feel it is the right thing for
the animals.
Finally, when I was at a sporting event recently, one of our Y6 girls asked me if I was aware of the
flooding in Africa following Cyclone Idai. We discussed the disaster and she suggested that the
right thing to do would be to raise awareness of it at school and look into fundraising opportunities
to support those affected by it.
It is fantastic that all of these children are thinking of more than themselves. Despite their age,
they already want to make a difference on a local and global stage and that is something that we
should all be very proud of.
Kind regards,
Sporting A word from success... the Principal...
This week we took a number of our athletes to compete in the County Championships. Bearing
in mind there are over 6000 children in each year group across Cornwall, our children have done
incredibly well to qualify for these events:
Grass Track Cycling
On Thusrday our 8 cyclists from Y5 and 6 headed
to Newquay for the County finals. Each of our
two teams had to complete two time trials and
their times would be combined to calculate their
final position. The time trials consist of 6 laps
of a grass track and the riders must stay within
two bike-lengths of each other at all times. They
also need to rotate the lead rider each lap. All
of this is very challenging whilst also riding at
full speed! After the results were calculated, our
team came a very creditable 8th place.
Well done to Samuel.C, Archie, Tilly , Conan,
Oliver.T, Frances, Jake and Sonny.
Cross County
Our runners also headed to Newquay to compete
against 60 of the best runners in Cornwall.
The weather was warm, the course was a good
length, but the competition was fierce. All
of our children ran incredibly well, giving it
their all and finishing in the top 35 in their age
group. Jenna managed a fantastic 13th place
finish whilst Harlyn went even better to finish
an incredible 10th! I was so pround of all the
runners who represented the school so brilliantly.
Well done Anya, Alex, Harlyn, Joe and
Jenna.
Girls’ A word Football from the Principal... Focus...
Rosemellin v Ludgvan -
On Thursday 21st March, Ludgvan girls’ football team took part in their very first football game. It
was great to see so many smiles from both teams which created a beautifully relaxed atmosphere
and was a great example of how the sport can bring together different communities.
The game began with an immediate attack from Rosemellin and a perfect shot into the top corner
for what would have been a super goal - only to be thwarted by the cat-like reflexes of Isabele. A
defence consisting of Margo, Gracie and Emily B was solid throughout the first half and worked
together to make some very important blocks and tackles. The tireless work of, Ena, Abby, Harlyn,
Emily C and Gorgie would put many professional footballers to shame. Unfortunately, Rosemellin
were 3-0 up at half time. The 2nd half saw a complete change of personnel; Jessica, Sofia, Alana,
Sophie M, Agatha Amy, Kyla, Niamh and Harlyn played much more defensively to counter the
attacking guile of the Rosemellin strikeforce. It worked well enough to only concede 1 more goal
before the final whistle. However, Rosemellin certainly had to work hard for their win as Sophie
and Amy were taking no prisoners with their tackles (Vinnie Jones would have been so proud).
The result was by no-means a bad one as we played a team who have years of experience and a
much higher average age. Therefore, in my eyes, this performance was as good as a win as I felt
an overwhelming sense of pride for these fearless and hard-working girls. The most encouraging
sight of the afternoon was that all girls finished the experience just as they had started... with a big
smile.
Ludgvan girls’ football team would like to say a
monumental
“ THANK YOU”
to the Friends of Ludgvan School for their generous
donation to fund our football kit.
Broad and Balanced Curriculum...
Greek Day
Class 3 participated in an Ancient Greek experience
on Tuesday. We were overwhelmed by the
creativity of some costumes from a simplistic
yet effective toga (pillowcase or bedsheet) to a
completely painted and hair braided Medusa.
During the morning, we created some Greek
weaponary and temples with junk modelling,
designed and painted Greek vases and also
took part in our very own Greek Olympics.
This activity followed a successful afternoon of
clay modelling ancient Greek artifacts.
Thank you to everyone for supporting your
child’s invaluable, immersive experience for
this topic.
Early Years High Tea
Early Years have had a busy week, cooking and
preparing food for their Mothers day High Tea.
The children really enjoyed yesterday afternoon
with their families. Thank you to everyone who
attended.
Broad and Balanced Curriculum...
Year 1 Cakesale
Class 1 raised an amazing £150.70 for the RNLI
with their cake sale yesterday! Well done Class
1, and thank you to everyone for your support!
.
The Boat Race
Last week we held our annual ‘Ludgvan Boat
Race’. There were some fantastic designs and
some close racing, but everyone had a great
morning. Thank you to Mrs Wheeler for organising
and our Y6 children for getting slightly
damp in the river!
Mini MAT Tour
Last week, we welcomed some very talented
musicians from MBA to our school. They have
all written and recorded their own music and
performed it to our whole school in our very
own concert! It was really inspiring for our children
to see the opportunities that are available
to them when they reach secondary school.
What’s been going on...
Even more sport!
Quadkids
On Tuesday 19th March, 16 children from Key Stage 2 took part in the annual Quadkids event at
Penwith College. Quadkids is similar to athletics but children compete as a team to achieve the
most points by completing four different disciplines involving throwing, running and jumping.
Our Year 3 and 4 team competed really well in the morning and achieved some good points for
the team. Our Year 5 and 6 team were determined and gave their all in the afternoon, narrowly
missing a medal place.
Well done to Poppy,Jonny,Seth,Nell,Casey,Kiera,Scarlett,Jamie,Harlyn,Layla.O,Jacob,Jack,Oliver.N,Charlie,Georgie
and Tilly.
Y4 football
Our Y4 football team headed to MBA to play in
a festival this week. They were all superb and
ended the day unbeaten without conceding a
goal.
LEAP NEWS
Leading Edge Academies Partnership
Sara Davey - CEO
I am pleased to say that the partnership will be officially welcoming the next three schools to
join us from the 1st April 2019 to bring us up to a total of five. This has been as a result of a lot
of hard work and planning by all those involved, however the rewards for all of us will be
immense and I can’t wait to see some of our plans come to fruition over the coming months.
Visiting Pirate FM
Our partnership really pulled together to help PirateFM in
their recent “Tonne of Tins” campaign to raise awareness
of the Food Bank network and the vital work they do
within our community. Every school played their part
and on the last day of February, Mounts Bay Academy
and St Hilary School made the trip up to Camborne to
deliver almost 200kg of tins towards the final total of 17
tonnes. To put that into context, that is over 1% of the final
total from just two of our partner schools, amazing!
As a result the students were treated to a “backstage tour” of the station and had the chance to
meet some of the regular presenters. They even spent some time in one of the studios before
being presented with their final donation certificate.
There was a positive and informative first meeting of the Early Years
teachers from the Leading Edge schools on Thursday 14th March. Our
discussions were wide ranging and challenging. We looked at outdoor
learning in Maths and we agreed to use the popular book called Messy
Maths by Juliet Robertson to trial some lessons that make Maths
concepts memorable.
Our therapy dog Charlie was also introduced to visitors from our
partner primary schools at Ludgvan and St Hilary. We discussed the
idea of schools having a dog to support student and staff well being.
Many schools now have dogs like Charlie as they can encourage
students into regular exercise, provide therapy for young people who
need to find calm and even assist in learning. For example, the dog on
Tresco Base in the Isles of Scilly has helped staff to transform reading
and is loved by all in the school.
Leading the Way
Meeting Derek Thomas
As part of the current climate change debate, partnership
students had the opportunity to meet with Derek Thomas MP
to talk about some of the things that concern young people
today. Everyone had some great ideas and I am pleased to say
that we have agreed to look into the possibility of working
together with Derek on a programme of tree planting on all of
our campuses. This will be a great opportunity for everyone in
the community to make a contribution to our environment. We
will be setting some dates in our diary for after Easter and will
let you know as soon as you can get involved.
Best wishes
Sara Davey - CEO, Leading Edge Academies Partnership
