THEEDITOR

In this issue of THE FIGHT Gabriel

Uhuru writes about his experience as

a Black, queer, trans, half-generation

immigrant from Kenya (“Tenacity,”

pages 20-21).

“My American experience has been

quite oxymoronic,” states Uhuru, currently

residing in Los Angeles. “Safe

yet toxic, free yet hunted, expected to

be at peace yet danger lurks at seemingly

every turn.”

“I just came back home after

spending four days in New Orleans

celebrating my thirtieth birthday,”

reveals Uhuru. “To be honest, I didn’t

have a conscious reason for New

Orleans, looking back, my reasons

were hidden deep in the subconscious.

What I knew is I wanted to

go somewhere that had palpable and

responsive energy. Somewhere that

had a story of resilience, a story of

defiance, a place that refuses to go

gently into that good night.”

“America is gaslighting done to

perfection,” writes Uhuru. “Learning

to trust one’s lived experiences as

opposed to believing the broadcasted

narrative of what it takes to keep this

society going is becoming a full-time

job. It is resistance and at this juncture

of my life, I have come to call it

THEROSTOWREPORT

FOR PETE’S SAKE

By the time you read this

issue of THE FIGHT, we might

have a gay mayor of Chicago to

go along with our gay governor

of Colorado. Yay. The run

off is April 2. (Cue: Rainbow

confetti.) And of course, we

have our gay presidential candidate,

South Bend Mayor Pete

Buttigieg, who is actually extremely

impressive. The guy’s

brilliant, and makes Beto look

like a tongue-tied wanna be.

Living in Austin, I’ve been

a Beto fan for a long time,

but I am less so now. Did you

read that Vanity Fair article?

He sounds like a dilettante,

frankly—a three-term congressman

fresh off a close but no

cigar run for Senate, who may

be falling for his own media

accolades. I know that Mayor

Pete might lack experience

as well, but he has run a city,

served in a war zone and won a

Rhodes scholarship. Not bad for

thirty-something Millennial.

I recently read a short piece

about whether or not we should

retire the phrase “openly gay.”

The conclusion was basically

yes, with a few exceptions. For

example, if elected, Pete

Buttigieg would be our first

“openly gay” president, because

James Buchanan did not advertise

his sexual orientation. That

said, everyone knew about it.

And since Buchanan is generally

considered to be the worst president

ever, a man who facilitated

our descent into civil war, I look

forward to the time when we

can upgrade our community’s

subpar presidential reputation by

putting an outstanding gay man

or woman into the White House.

On the other hand, I

suspect Trump will take over

Buchanan’s spot at the bottom

of the presidential barrel once

history sorts him out.

FRUMPY

OLD MEN

For now, I’m rooting for

Harris, but of course I will

PETE

BUTTIGIEG

support whoever we nominate

to run against Trump. As for

collusion, impeachment and

scandal, I’m for getting rid

of him in the most humiliating

manner—at the ballot

box. Don’t give him a victim

card. Make him a one-term

president, a loser with nothing

to boast about. Overshadow

his 2016 electoral college victory

with a tall column of blue

states. Let him set a record for

worst performance by a sitting

president in the modern age.

And please don’t put Pence

in power, even for a day. Let

him vanish into irrelevancy

FOLSOM STREET FAIR > MY REFLECTION

Some may call me a narcissist, and

I’m inclined to agree with them. But is

all of my mirror-gazing truly narcissism

if I hate what I see there? Well, yeah,

probably. I vow, yet again, to not give a

fuck about aging and to appreciate the

fact that I have the hard-won wisdom

of fifty-four years on this planet. I’m

told that this wisdom can benefit the

younger generation, and maybe

that’s true, but I’ve yet to be sought

out for advice from that demographic.

Maybe they’re waiting

for my neck wattle to reach my

chest before they feel confident

I might actually know something

about anything.

If and when those kids do

finally come to me for advice,

I will warn them to not

get caught up in the shallow

pursuit of perfection. I will tell

them, solemnly, that their insides

matter more than their outsides,

and that while they are striving to

look their best in this youth and

looks-obsessed culture, it should

not take precedence over bettering

their minds and their souls.

I will tell them that they are already

beautiful, and that aging

is a luxury denied to so many.

I will encourage them to

focus on loving themselves,

just the way they are. Just

like I am fighting to do.

Then, if what’s past is

prologue, I’ll probably tell

them leave me the fuck

alone so I can figure

out how to finance that

goddamned facelift.

FOLSOM STREET FAIR

Find out what

makes the

Santa Ynez

Valley the best

undiscovered

LGBTQ vacation

destination.

BY SEAN GALUSZKA

Before “hand crafted,” “small

batch,” and “farm to table”

became hipster mantra, the Santa

Ynez Valley employed these practices

for decades. They continue these

traditions unabated, but not boastful.

These aren’t selling points here, they’re

a time proven, simple fact.

Thirty minutes from coastal Santa

Barbara, the almost hidden rolling, green

hills of this rich, diverse, agricultural valley

stretch for miles. My only knowledge

of this area was limited to billboards off

the 101 between Los Angeles and San

Francisco touting pea soup. I don’t care for

pea soup, so I never stopped.

The cities of Solvang, Buellton, Los

Alamos, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez, Lompoc,

and others nestle in an easy radius. While

each boast unique sets of California staycation

destination qualities, they all seem

to have three things in common; amazing

quality food and craftsmanship, cute AF

décor, and all are decidedly LGBTQ friendly.

If Rose from Golden Girls hometown

of Saint Olaf came to life, it might be

Solvang, CA. I’d say it’s “Disneyland

Danish” but that would be a disservice to

its authenticity.

Incorporated in 1911 by a group of westbound

Danes escaping harsh Mid-West

winters, Solvang (“Sunny Field” in Danish)

was born.

Mixing with the Chumash and Latino

populations/cultures, a close knit agricultural

community grew resembling a

series of small European townships. All

practicing local, organic dining for over 80

years, they’ve evolved into what is now

“Farm Chic.” That, and true pride and joy

in craftsmanship from windmill building

to the perfect Thai-Mexican Shrimp Mole

make the Santa Ynez Valley the best undiscovered

LGBTQ vacation destination.
