Popular route reopened
Heathcote
Ward city
councillor Sara
Templeton
discusses the
reopening of
Sumner Rd
THE REOPENING of Sumner
Rd last week was a huge step
forward eight years after the
earthquake that so badly damaged
it and cut access between
the communities of Sumner and
Lyttelton.
The road has long been a popular
scenic and recreation route
for the community and visitors
alike, and the reopening will also
help support local businesses.
Popping over the hill to visit
friends and shop will be easy
once again and I know that I’m
really looking forward to being
able to loop around from my
home in Heathcote Valley.
It was a difficult project, but
the final design limited the
landscape changes that Diamond
Harbour residents were initially
concerned about. Around
100,000 cu m of rock was still
removed though and it’s good to
see some of it being used in the
building of the Coastal Pathway.
The project also came in $15m
under the initial budget at $45m.
Sumner has had limited access
with only one road in and out
for a long time and the improved
access is welcomed.
However, the community
board is aware of concerns that
some residents have expressed
about having the dangerous
goods and oversized vehicles
driving through their communities
on the way to the port again,
and will be working with staff to
address issues.
The reopening will free up the
Lyttelton Tunnel from the many
closures due to the transport of
dangerous goods between the
port and the city.
As use of the road increases,
please keep an eye out for each
other, be patient and share the
space.
There will be a temporary
slower speed limit for a few
months and a recent consultation
on permanently lowering the
speed to 60km/h here and along
Summit Rd is going through a
process at the moment.
ACCESS:
Sumner Rd
over Evans
Pass is now
back in
operation.
It’s who we are
that matters
Port Hills MP
Ruth Dyson
reflects
on Friday’s
National
Remembrance
Service and
the March 15
tragedies
NOTHING COULD have
prepared us for the shock of the
terrorist attack on two Christchurch
mosques on March 15. Not
earthquakes, floods or fires – all
of which we are familiar with
here.
The shock was quickly followed
by grief. The loss of so many
innocent lives – men, women
and children – who were praying
when their lives were taken.
But the response of our communities
has been to show love
and support. It has happened in
so many ways – flowers, cards,
baking, messages, money. All
given in love and sorrow. The
outpouring of support was extraordinary.
It felt like the whole
nation was pushing back on hate
with kindness.
But the words of Farid Ahmed,
spoken at the National Remembrance
Service last Friday, were
even more extraordinary. He said
he had forgiven the man who
killed his beloved wife. He said
he didn’t want to have a heart
that was like a volcano about to
explode. He said he wanted a
heart that was full of love.
This is bigger than compassion
and forgiveness. This is a lesson
in how to respond to bad things
– and that should be with good
things. The greeting shared by
all those of Muslim faith is As
Salamu Alaykum – peace be
upon you.
I know that over the last two
and a half weeks, everyone in
New Zealand and so many
around the world have felt pain
and sorrow over these events. But
we have so much to be thankful
for here as well.
The passersby who stopped
and risked their own well-being
to help others, the front line
responders – police, ambulance
and fire service, the amazing
health system staff, the school
staff who kept our children safe
well after normal closing time,
and all those who have offered
their love and support since that
dark day. Thank you.
That is New Zealand. As
Salamu Alaykum. Peace be upon
you.
Loves of our Lives
Llew Summers
This is a collection of recent work from Llew, half of which has not been
shown before. One group, on mythic themes, explores the human condition
metaphorically. The remaining work treats the human body in Llew’s traditional
manner, exploring the joy of movement as a celebration of life. All the bronzes are
initially carved in wood or marble and are from editions of seven.
Robyn Webster
This printmaking technique which I have
developed, came about from my explorations with
harakeke / NZ flax and fine art over many years.
I sought to bring these threads
together and plait them into one
form of expression. I make the
figures, objects and textures,
and hand print them in different
colours and compositions to make
one-off but related pictures. I am
also hoping to evoke an emotional
response to the material itself.
Loving this plant, learning the
traditions around the gathering and
Love Story 1
‘Mercury’ available
in both maquette and
massive scale.
processing of it, has taught me much about our
place in the universe. It would be great to see
a resurgence of natural materials
such as harakeke into everyday use,
and for us to continue to innovate
alternatives to single-use plastics.
More broadly, my work asks
questions about how we see
ourselves in relation to our
environment and to each other. In
this body of work I am considering
my relationship with Llew, my love,
and with the concept of Love itself.
