Wednesday April 3 2019 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi BAY HARBOUR PAGE 15 SPORT Sea to Sky success for Sumner athletes SUMNER RUNNING Club was in full force at the Sea to Sky triathlon and duathlon on Sunday. The race included a 750m sea swim, 2km run for duathletes, 19km bike ride up Evans Pass and along the Summit Rd to the top of Mt Pleasant then out to Godley Head. At Godley Head competitors swapped their bikes for their running shoes and ran to Taylors Mistake then up and over Whitewash Head to Sumner finishing on the Esplanade beside the clock tower. Sumner Running Club had several athletes competing in the duathlon all of whom took out podium places. Katherine Fitch was first in the 40-49 age group, David Fitch was second in the 40-49 age group and Graham Batchelor was first in the 70+ age group. The triathlon also attracted some world-class competitors. This year’s Taupo Ironman champion Mike Phillips won the triathlon while Olympian and Commonwealth Games athlete Andrea Hewitt won the women’s division, taking out third place overall. GOLD: Katherine Fitch was all smiles after taking out first place in the 40-49 duathlon. The club is welcoming new members for the cross-country and road season. The fifth installment of the surfing festival attracted 85 surfers which made for a tight competition. The men’s competition was taken out by Mike Lay from Cornwall, England. Josh Woolet from the Sunshine Coast came in second and Eurico Romaguera from Portugal snatched third place ahead of Sumner’s Luke O’Neil. Dunedin’s Daisy Thomas came in first place in the women’s competition, followed by Ivy Thomas from the Gold Coast, handing them some other points,” said Dodgson. “We actually got back into with two very good tries to start the second half . . . then they worked it well for a try and you could see just a bit of energy seep out of us and to be fair they probably dominated us in contact.” There was also an injury toll from the weekend with two players paying visits to the hospital. The Village Party which followed the competition was sold out and featured Sumner band The Butlers and Melbourne band China Beach. All the profits from the art show of American Ty William at LeStrange Gallery are being donated to Christchurch Muslim tragedy funds.
