Next year’s model?
Are things about to change in the security
industry? A new business model for selling
and installing surveillance systems could be
just around the corner
At this time of year many of the security technology
manufacturers are attending exhibitions, roadshows and
events which means I get to talk to lots of people in short
bursts over the course of a few hours a day on a host of subjects.
The topics of conversation range from the commute to the state
of play in the market with a little sport and music thrown in, but
occasionally I’ll hear a little nugget of information or prediction
that makes me think a little on the way home (unless there’s a
match on the radio).
One such occasion happened recently at a camera
manufacturer’s event at which one of the experts told me that the
company was putting most of its efforts into developing software
- not hardware, which is probably the first time this was the case
in the history of the business. They will keep on working to
launch new cameras, but with the use of surveillance cameras
going beyond security and the analysis of data being just as
much an attraction to the end user as the prevention of a crime,
the software installed in the system now needs to be capable of
providing sophisticated services and functions or an alternative
could be sourced.
Now, that was interesting but not the reason for my homeward
bound ponderings; it was the fact that he said that he could soon
see the day when the hardware comes free of charge with the
revenue coming in from software licences, monitoring services,
cloud storage and continued mobile access rights etc. This
wouldn’t be a first in a consumer-led market as mobile phone
contracts and satellite TV deals often see hardware being
provided without any upfront cost as recurring fees pay the way.
Quite what this would mean for the installer, and particularly the
distributor, remains to be seen, after all this type of business
model would not work across all applications, but it would be an
interesting development.
This scenario does raise a few interesting points (see Panel
elsewhere in this edition) such as if the customer doesn’t actually
own the cameras in the job then what happens to them all once
the system is upgraded or the customer no longer wishes to pay?
Does this mean lots of used equipment with no real market value
would be heading back to the supplier or would we just stick the
kit up in the loft alongside the old Sky box and the last decade’s
worth of mobile phones? Would system upgrades go from
involving new hardware to just changing firmware?
Software development for security systems is a major R&D
spend these days so it won’t be given away for free, but will the
technology it sits on be a loss leader?
CCTV ACCESS FIRE INTRUDER
Kerry Jones
SBD rated monitoring company
stops break-in
Wigan-based Professional Surveillance
Management (PSM) is claiming to be the first
remote monitoring CCTV company in the country
to have achieved Secured By Design (SBD)
Police Preferred Specification.
Within days of the award being issued to PSM
this year the company proved why it was worthy
of the accolade by helping to deter a break-in at
a local business park. The incident began when
PSM spotted a person trying to cut through the
main gates of a North West business park with
an angle grinder. The first response was to issue
an audio warning alongside notifying the police
and the key holder for the business park. The
intruder decided it would be unwise to continue
with the break-in and fled the scene without
gaining entry.
Kerry Jones, CEO of PSM, said: “The intruder
could have caused devastation for many
businesses and their premises without our
surveillance. Luckily the owners recognised the
value of bespoke remote monitoring services,
not only for themselves but also for the
businesses based at the park. Not a day goes by
without our audio warnings challenging
trespassers and potential criminals, forcing
them to abandon their plans of attack.”
In brief
IDIS Europe has reported
record sales growth for
2018, with a 78% rise
attributed to successful
projects with long term
partners and continued
investment in technology
and support services.
After the successful study
and publication of its book
‘False Alarm Study’ the Fire
Section of Euralarm has
decided to continue the
study and ask the Technical
Group False Alarms how the
reduction of false alarms
can be further progressed. A
new European standard
might be one of the
proposals.
Firexo admitted as full member of the FIA
Firexo, creator of the liquid able to extinguish all classes of fire, has been admitted as a full
member to the Fire Industry Association (FIA).
The FIA is the largest fire protection trade association in the UK, representing over 800
members – a significant proportion of the fire industry. Its main aim is to promote, improve and
perfect fire protection methods, devices, services and apparatus. New members undergo a
vetting process before being inducted into the association.
Following its admittance, Firexo will now take part in setting industry best practice, shaping
standards and influencing fire legislation.
Dave Breith, CEO of Firexo, comments: “Tracing its roots as far back 1916, the FIA has been
unscrupulously representing the fire industry for more than 100 years. Firexo is proud to be
admitted into this highly respected association, which recognises the vast potential of Firexo to
revolutionise the industry, save lives, and protect property.”
ARE YOU
SOMETHING?
Fire and security apprentices compete in a
six-hour installation challenge
Electronic Fire and Security apprentices nearing the end of their
training have showcased their skills in a three-day competition
at New College Lanarkshire. Forty third-year Modern
Apprentices took part in the Security Skills Challenge at the
Kirkintilloch Campus.
The main atrium of the building was transformed with a
row of ten purpose-built competition booths in which trainees
had to complete a six-hour challenge to install a fire or
security alarm.
The event, which was hosted in partnership with security
equipment firms CSL, Dahua and Orisec, was organised to
coincide with Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2019.
The competition was attended by almost 100 industry
specialists, including representatives from the National
Security Inspectorate (NSI), British Security Industry
Association (BSIA), Connelly Security Systems, Chubb, Border
Safeguard, EFT Systems and Kings Security.
The challenge was designed as a real-life scenario in which
students use the skills and knowledge gained over the course
of their studies to install and commission either a fire alarm or
intruder alarm to the relevant British and European standards.
The four apprentices who garnered the most points from
their installations will now receive sponsored spots at the
IFSEC International event in London in June to compete against
the best in the UK at the Engineers of Tomorrow competition.
The winning apprentices were: Lee Scobbie of Johnson
Controls in Uddingston; Stephen Gray from Fortress Security in
Kilmarnock; Michael Battersby, of Palmaris in Coatbridge and
Ryan Gibb who works for Tyger Security in Motherwell.
David Scott, Curriculum and Quality Leader at New College
Lanarkshire, said: “The apprentices put on an amazing
spectacle. Year on year, the standard of the apprentices’ work
continues to improve. The Electronic Fire and Security team
organised an amazing event, and I am proud to be part of
such a hard-working team of professionals. Without the
continued support from our partners – BSIA, NSI, CSL, Dahua
and Orisec – events such as this just wouldn’t be possible, so
I’d like to say a big thank you to all the sponsors who made
the event such a success.”
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks talks to Roman Cooper, Executive Director at
Allcooper Group. Founded over 30 years ago, Allcooper are an independent,
family-run business specialising in the installation, maintenance and
monitoring of a wide range of security and fire systems.
How important have newer technologies
been in the development of the solutions
Allcooper are now delivering?
Some of our disciplines, such as CCTV and
Security Monitoring, have moved on a great
deal in recent years, whilst others, such as
Fire, have been static due to wider
constraints. The advent of IP solutions has
meant that the industry has had to join the
‘digital revolution’ and we have had to
embrace the challenge of moving our staff
from an analogue world into this new digital
one.
The opportunity to implement new
technologies should also be a chance for
improvement in efficiency. Despite this, time
saved on installation and commissioning on
the one hand can be countered with IP and
network issues on the other. In the long term,
upgrading to ‘software as a service’ will bring
additional control and increased reliability. We
need to embrace new technologies but keep
focused on what we are ultimately trying to
achieve, as well as ensure it will be the best
long-term solution for our customers.
One example of where we are doing this, is by
upgrading older systems to new smart
systems, offering App control and options for
self-monitoring to customers who have not
benefited from monitoring before. They also
have the option to upgrade to professional
ARC monitoring, as and when required. This is
a great step forward for our customers.
In terms of upgrading older systems, how
do the challenges vary between
Commercial and Domestic customers?
Commercially, customers need to understand
the true benefits of any upgrade. They aren’t
going to spend their money just because we
tell them it’s a good idea! They want to see
the value that a new system will bring:
advanced management information, increased
‘sweating’ of the assets and better protection
from both internal and external threats.
In the domestic market, customers have had
our systems installed and working reliably for
many years. They are happy with what they
have, and it has provided them with the
protection they need. Opportunities may exist
with non-invasive information being provided
to reassure people that all is well at home
e.g. checking that your children got home
from school OK as the alarm was unset. I
think the opportunity in this market is huge,
but it must be more than just security.
Despite being based in Gloucester you
have clients across the country including
London and Birmingham. How have you
managed to achieve this?
Our Head Office is in Gloucester and we have
grown both organically and through acquisition
in this region. Beyond Gloucester, many years
ago we were asked by a local M&E contractor
to help on a project in Eaton Square in London
that had gone pear-shaped. Gerard (Cooper)
and I went to London and sorted the problem
out. The Client, the PM, the Architect and
Designer all liked the way we pulled the job
together and from this opportunity we were
awarded another project and it grew from
there. Gerard has built a strong niche business
in London and the Home Counties in the
Private Client market. He has just completed a
project worth over £800k in one residence
and is currently working on several
international opportunities alongside this.
In Birmingham, we acquired a business there
three and a half years ago. This deal was
YOU SAID IT!
partly strategic and partly opportunistic. The
owner wanted to retire, and it seemed a good
fit for us, so we bought the business and have
taken it forward from there. This gives us a
strong geographical spread and next we are
looking to grow our business in the North.
In terms of the staff you have that have
enabled this level of service to be
delivered, what challenges do you face in
bringing in and retaining the right people?
We are proud to have many long-serving staff
members at Allcooper. They enable us to bring
consistency and continuity to our customers,
as well as provide leadership and direction to
all our new staff. This reinforces our own “this
is how we do things here” culture.
Whilst we still believe in the importance of
developing Apprentices (something we have
encouraged continually since the business was
formed), we have recently switched our focus
to recruiting more experienced people, who
are looking for a career change or who have
left the armed forces. So far, this has been
very successful. To support them, we have two
full-time Training Managers who are mainly
field based. This has been a massive
commitment, but it is working, with staff
feeling valued, invested in and supported.
Consequently, this has helped with staff
retention and overall job satisfaction.
“Used your equipment so much over the years, awesome kit and great technical support”
can be linked to an access control system as an
input device. It can be network linked to the
Hikvision iVMS video management software as
an access control device; a copy of this software
is supplied on the CD.
The unit has a fixed IP address which must be
changed to suit the local addressing scheme.
Hikvision SADP software can be used to find the
device and update the IP address even if not in
the same subnet.
A strong password must be entered at first
The Hikvision Face Recognition terminal is a
self-contained image capture and display
device that can be used to authenticate
individuals by their facial details to allow access
to buildings or facilities. In addition, there is a
built-in Mifare card reader and the ability to add
PIN code entry. The “F” suffix identifies that this
model includes an optical fingerprint reader for
a further level of security.
Getting started
A 2-pole connector is used to feed 12v DC power
into the unit with one of two RJ45 connectors for
network data. The 20-way connector provides
access to features such as RS485, Weigand,
door control and alarm handling.
There are a number of possible wiring
configurations depending on the level of
Menu options
In stand-alone mode the device’s menu can be
accessed by a long press off around three
seconds on the touch screen. This displays the
password entry screen and when the input box
is selected an alphanumeric Qwerty keyboard is
presented. The buttons are only 6mm² so it’s
very easy to miss-key if you don’t use a suitable
stylus. The keyboard characters remain in upper
case regardless of the latching Shift key state
so care must be taken when switching case. A
further annoyance was the fact that the
keyboard must be closed before each entry will
be accepted. This was particularly odd at first
start-up when the keyboard had to be closed
between entering the admin password and reconfirming
it. This was also noted when entering
values in some of the user fields.
The device’s native menu structure is a
simple icon-based layout with headings of User,
Comm, ACS, System, Data, Log, Time, Transfer
and Info.
For improved configuration, the Hikvision
iVMS4200 software is provided and this gives a
more conventional set of menus based on:
System: Device information, Time & Date,
System Maintenance, User management and
Security.
Network: Network parameter setup.
Alarm: Triggered output, naming and delay
time.
Other: Access Control parameters, Enabling
and Face Comparison settings.
Image: Camera settings and audio volume
controls.
Operation: Open or Close door with status
shown.
Status: Simply shows the relay state.
TEST
An impressive piece
of kit that can provide
a suitably high-tech
impression when
used for building or
departmental access
control
(continued from p14)
The configuration menu structure is for both
the Facial recognition unit and also the Video
entry unit so some of the video setting features
are greyed out for this unit. The reason for the
Status option is unclear as this appears to be
shown more effectively on the Operation window.
The iVMS4200 software includes an Access
Control module that is used for entering people
data and images. There are very flexible options
for downloading this data as CSV files and
uploading additional entries. An additional
module provides Time & Attendance tracking and
reporting if the system is set for commercial
rather than residential property.
Hardware
The device is housed in a robust plastic enclosure
with a 7” portrait mode touch screen to show the
facial image and display on-screen prompts and
menu data. For the fingerprint model the optical
reader is placed just below the touch screen. A
red light above this shows the lock status and
changes to green for approximately 2 seconds
when activated.
At the top of the device are two cameras, one is
colour and the other is infrared responsive. The
recognition engine uses input from both modules.
Two white illuminators ensure facial details are
sufficiently lit at the target distance of 0.3 to 1
metre.
Used in its simplest form to directly control a
door, would not be particularly secure as if prised
from the wall, all of the connections become
accessible. To overcome this potential weakness,
the unit has a number of options:
A Wiegand connection can be made into an
access control system; it can communicate door
control commands through the iVMS software or
the use of an optional Secure Door Control Unit
part number DS-K2M060 uses RS485 commands
from the terminal to the additional device
powered and located on the secure side of the
entrance.
The terminal has a fan that regularly starts and
stops, this is quite noticeable but should not be
too intrusive in most office environments.
The Wiegand connection can be set to send or
receive mode to interface with a third-party
controller or to connect a card reader.
A SIM card can be inserted for wireless
connectivity, but this requires linking through a
Hikvision EHome account.
capture time stated, however this was with a
relatively small sample of users. Face recognition
accuracy is said to be >=99% but this can be a
security risk if a large number of people are
enrolled on the system. Hikvision do refer to the
potential for false acceptance and false rejections
in the user manual and the settings that can
mitigate the problem. If used solely as a facial
recognition device the unit must compare the
captured face with the full database (1:N
authentication), however, if two factor
authentication is implemented with fingerprint
and face then the fingerprint is compared on a 1:N
basis and then the face is 1:1 compared with the
result of the fingerprint match. When using card
or pin entry, the comparison is always on a 1:1
basis and security can be greater.
It is relatively easy to get confused working
through the various system configuration and
people management menus, especially when
allocating permissions and linking the face, card
and fingerprint devices so you should allow
plenty of time for first-time set-up. While the user
manual is comprehensive it does not have an easy
flow to explain the process.
The image on the 7” screen is mirror imaged so
giving a more natural appearance to the terminal
user. The camera image when viewed on the iVMS
screen is correctly presented though horizontally
stretched.
The unit has a spoken voice stating
“Authenticated” when a match is positive, but this
can be turned off if preferred.
It has a capacity of up to 10,000 faces, 5,000
fingerprints and a card and event capacity of
50,000 entries being stored.
Two-way audio to the VMS is supported and
can be called from the door station or control. The
call option on the terminal allows communication
with a number of stations or the control point. If
control is called, then a video pop-up window
appears showing the camera image with audio
from the terminal.
Conclusion
An impressive piece of kit that can provide a
suitably high-tech impression when used for
building or departmental access control. The
menu structures could be improved but once set
up the unit performs reliably.
8.5 out of 10
Performance
The capture performance was impressive with
facial details being quickly recognised at varying
angles and distances and within the half-second
Wireless, modular and multi-layered security system launched
RISCO Group has released Agility 4, a wireless, modular and multi-layered security system which includes a range of
accessories with more add-ons expected to follow.
With a choice of communication modules, including IP and 3G, the new solution is designed to provide an adaptable
solution for any type of installation and monitoring. Multi-socket communication modules enable parallel reporting to the cloud and
monitoring stations with multiple IP addresses using one communication module.
Detecting intruders outside without false alarms was a significant consideration in respect of the design of the system. Utilising
the new Beyond Wireless DT outdoor detector, which leverages outdoor detection technologies and algorithms
based on four detection channels, the perimeter is secured.
RISCO Group has developed both indoor and outdoor camera
detectors for alarm verification with new features including Agility 4’s
ability to receive a short clip of the event alongside a series of
snapshots through an integrated camera. Upon detection, the camera
is triggered automatically with snapshots and video clips available to
GET A FRESH
ON ACCESS
We’ve had a lot of arguments in our office about this advert.
You see the problem is we have been selling this hardware for a couple of years now,
it’s already a well-established favourite for a lot of installers, and the marketing department
wanted to advertise something new, a fresh perspective.
They wanted to shout about our brand-new Janus C4 software platform.
They argue that the software is our USP (this is marketing speak for why our access control
system is better than others) and that the beauty of it is that it really provides such a simple
and elegant solution to complex real-life access control problems.
Then they point out that we should be shouting about the integrations we have
for leading CCTV, Intruder and other BMS equipment.
And don’t get them started on the User Interface itself and how intuitive
the screen navigation is.

PERSPECTIVE
CONTROL
Now don’t get me wrong, they make some eloquent points; but here’s the thing.
There are still some people that haven’t tried our hardware yet,
and we don’t think that’s right.
We won’t rest until every access control installer has had chance to see for
themselves how easy it is to cable, or how quickly the Blades snap into the
Controllers, or even how cost effectively a system can be built up using a
modular approach of Single and Multi-Controllers.
In the end there was only one thing we could all agree on – we
really ought to be making more of our support for OSDP, as
that really is a game changer. Maybe we’ll cover that in the
next advert - if we can agree on the wording.
INTERVIEW
Matthew Epps
“Larger companies
are now more willing
to invest in training
which is great for us
because we're now
running multiple
training sessions
weekly”
Distribution and innovation
This month we talk to Matthew
Epps, Owner and MD at Oprema,
about security technology
distribution and bringing new
systems to the UK market
How have the last twelve months been
for you?
Business is good and in the last year we have
really grown in size too, taking on around 20
new members of staff in 2018. We've invested
heavily in the sales team and we now have nine
Business Development Managers in the team
and we are starting to see the rewards of this
investment. Our growth was around 70% from
2017 to 2018 and in 2019 we are looking to
achieve a further 40-50% growth as a minimum.
What's popular in the market?
I think the major trend in the UK market recently
has been the movement towards IP across all
divisions. We've seen growth in all of the main
technology sectors we operate in, not just CCTV,
with fire, access control and intruder successes
with the likes of Paxton, Videx, Apollo, Hochiki
and Honeywell.
So are you looking to work with new
brands?
We work with around 100 brands and we are
always looking to bring new partners on board,
but to be honest, we're very selective in who we
choose to work with. Potential new brands need
to match our technology-led ethos meaning we
are really only looking for key partners. We
might take on two or three new suppliers this
year, but they will need to fit our criteria. 80% of
our business is with our key partners so this is
the type of company we would like to represent
rather than someone who will not be a major
part of our business. We certainly will not be
“badge collecting”; we'll focus on established
companies that we may have been impressed
with or it could be someone relatively unknown
but with a new technology. An example of this
would be Doordeck who offer a smartphone
driven keyless access control system.
Are there any trends in the requests you
see from installers?
We deal with all sizes of installation companies,
from the man with a van up to big companies
spending an excess of a £million a year. But
what I think we are seeing as a strong trend is
that larger companies are now more willing to
invest in training which is great for us because
we're now running multiple training sessions
weekly. These are all free to attend and are
either hosted by a manufacturer or our in-house
technical team. This change is probably
happening because being an installer these
days is much more about the technology you're
fitting; what it can do and how it can improve
situations, rather than just putting a BNC on the
end of a cable, so employers are more willing to
invest in engineer training especially in the CPD
verified courses.
How has the market changed since you
started the business?
It's quite interesting to look back to the early
days because we started with the intention of
being an IP CCTV distributor but in the first 18
months to two years, only about 5% of our
turnover was with IP cameras. The big change
that we have seen since those days is the UK
market waking up to IP and a lot of that is down
to companies like Milestone and Avigilon.
However once Dahua and Hikvision came into
the market it completely changed the picture,
making IP cost-effective compared to analogue.
Also, a lot of the new systems coming to the
security market today are software based which
22
www.psimagazine.co.uk

again means that training is essential for
installers as systems become even more
sophisticated.
How do you bring a new product to
market?
It depends on the product being introduced to
be honest. For a small product we will be sent
all of the information about it prior to launch but
for a major launch we would have someone from
the manufacturer coming in and training our
teams and we would then have a day dedicated
to selling the product with special offers to
announce its arrival.
How do you utilise your tech support?
There are some companies, such as Paxton, that
have a really good support team of their own, so
we don't tend to have too much to do there
unless it is an integration in to the likes of
Dahua or Milestone. We act as the first line of
support for many other of our partners, and only
escalate it to the manufacturer if need be. For
companies like Dahua, where we provide the full
support service and training in house, our tech
manager trains the team on the systems. If
something really unusual happens we have the
capability to take the product off the shelf and
replicate the installation here to figure out what
has happened.
You are exhibiting at SiX in November,
what was the appeal?
There are two reasons why we booked - firstly it
is a show that's installer focused and secondly, I
think people have been crying out for something
away from London. It's in a good location for us
as we're really strong in the North and there are
a lot of security companies based around
Manchester. I think it's going to be a good event
for everyone, so much so it's the first event ever
that we've booked in its inaugural year. Of
course, we're also looking forward to the
Premier Awards night in the evening of the first
day!
Are you worried about Brexit?
The biggest risk for us is what happens with
currency and that has always been something
we need to be aware of. If we think back to
twelve years ago, we were close to $2/£1 that
suddenly changed dropped massively and so
prices went up, but as soon as the currency got
stronger prices went back down. That is what we
have to monitor, although unless you are talking
“We act as the first line of support for many of our partners,
and only escalate it to the manufacturer if need be”
about real high-end cameras the price changes
aren't too big. I don't see any issues with stock
control either, yet if we do need to change we
will. This business was started in a recession
and if we can live through that then I have no
concerns about Brexit. Basically, whatever
happens we will just get on with it and adapt
where required.
What's the best thing about working in
the security industry?
We have a great team, we all get on well and
while we work hard we also have a lot of fun
along the way and I think the industry itself is
like that. I've made some great friends through
this business - we're all an interesting bunch in
this sector!
How will the security industry change
over the next few years?
I think there will be a lot more of the softwareled
companies coming to the fore. I think we're
going to continue to see HD over coax
technology, but it will be a shrinking market,
due to the modern infrastructure that lends
itself to IP. The areas where I feel there may be
big industry trends are all on the analytics side
such as facial recognition as they become
embedded into cameras, supplied as standard
as we go forward.
PANEL
Surveillance and servitisation
How close are we to the surveillance business model changing to
hardware not having an upfront cost for some applications? What would
be the impact of paying only for software or taking a share of revenue
generated for the installer or the distributor? The PSI Panel deliberates...
Talking to an expert at one camera
manufacturing company’s recent roadshow,
the subject of how your customers could
pay for their installations in the future came up.
The idea being put forward was that there would
be no charge for the hardware with software
licences or even a percentage of the money
raised as a result of the software (such as with
fines) would be the revenue stream. Could this
really be the next surveillance business model?
We asked the experts for their opinions:
David Davies – DVS
Interesting indeed as most
hardware based systems out
there still do work on paying
for the hardware outright ( in
most cases) and if any ongoing
software or analytical
packages are nornally paid for
monthly , quarterly or yearly on top. And this
seems be quite acceptable at this point in time
as it’s a very clear and easy to understand.
If we start to see the move over to the
hardware becomes included as part of an
ongoing SaaS offering then the cost of the
hardware would need to be looked at. Some
hardware is extremely costly at this point in
time and would not lend itself very easily to that
type of market. Other questions like minimum
term contracts and payment structures to
protect all involved, as typically a distribution
partner makes a hardware sale, then after the
set term that pthe ayment is met, a shift to a
differing model would have to be seriously
looked at, but this is typically how the mobile
“One market where this does
work well actually is the ANPR
market where the hardware is
provided in some instances and
installed free of charge, but the
on-going revenue it makes from
speeding, illegal parking,
overstay etc. is then claimed”
phone market works so it can be achieved with
some thought.
And I suppose just like a mobile phone
contract until this payment term is met then the
hardware would still belong to the manufacturer
or distribution partner, but without the risk of
the customer returning the equipment due to
them not wanting to continue the payment
options they would have an obligation. Once
this obligation is met then the payment may
drop in line with the solution offered.
One market where this does work well actually
is the ANPR market where the hardware is
provided in some instances and installed free of
charge, but the on-going revenue it makes from
speeding, illegal parking, overstay etc. is then
claimed in majority by that installation provider
allowing them to make on-going revenue while
providing a service with low overhead to the
customer that has an issue to fix.
PANEL
“There is a good
argument to say that
CCTV surveillance
could be financed in a
similar way to
perhaps mobile phone
contracts, with the
end customer paying
a monthly fee that
covers a ‘pay back’
cost for the hardware”
(from previous page)
Mark Rees –
360 Vision Technology
It is getting much closer for
sure. In our field (CCTV camera
manufacturing), technology is
evolving in a similar way to
consumer products, in that
products such as our cameras are primarily
network accessible (be that via local network,
internet, 4G/LTE or satellite, etc) and as such,
this means that updates and feature additions
can now be completed remotely without the
need for potentially costly site visits.
If this model evolves further, there is good
reason to consider subscription based
accessibility to camera surveillance hardware –
the ability to grant or deny access to the
streaming feed is possible, and this could be
tied into a monthly or annual arrangement quite
easily.
Beyond that, there is the potential to bring
‘app’ opportunities to the hardware – allowing
the customer to purchase hardware that is fully
featured but with certain aspects ‘disabled,’
until an app or subscription is triggered. A good
example would be PTZ access by a person or
Video Analytics. In fact, for Video Analytics, this
could be broken down into a series of ‘apps’
around analytic type, allowing the customer to
pick and choose at will, similar to the apps on a
smartphone or tablet – paying for what is
needed 'as and when' required.
Potentially, with the ability to update and/or
upgrade software features, there is a good
argument to say that CCTV surveillance could be
financed in a similar way to perhaps mobile
phone contracts, with the end customer paying
a monthly fee that covers a ‘pay back’ cost for
the hardware, as well as a contractual
accessibility to the video stream. It is certainly
an interesting idea to potentially make
necessary surveillance cost-effective to a wider
customer audience!
Gareth Williams –
Oprema
Return on investment is the
main focus here. Installers
and distributors need to
benefit from the advances in
technology, and tailor their
offer around services and
hardware, as the technological world evolves.
We are getting a step closer as many
installers will fit systems FOC and then gain
profit off the company’s use of the system, for
example receiving a percentage of Parking
Company’s fines. In this situation, the installer
would not be left out of pocket as the software
would be the return on investment.
It would greatly benefit the retail industry.
Due to the advancements in technology,
business intelligence would rapidly increase,
meaning that the retailer is able to act more
efficiently. Cameras providing analytics for the
organisation can allow them to spread their
marketing budget efficiently as they will have a
better knowledge of the level of footfall, and
their customer type- including age, gender and
mood. Staff allocation is more efficient and
targeted advertising can be utilised based upon
the above information. Retailers will be able to
use this to their advantage meaning they are
best prepared for situations yet to arise.
Student ID cards can inform university
welfare departments of student attendance and
entry in and out of buildings. With rising annual
26
www.psimagazine.co.uk

student fee costs, there is an argument to have
an access control management system to track
student movements and decrease the number of
first year drop-outs in particular. There is a fairly
simplistic return on investment model that could
allow the hardware to be free of charge.
In summary, security as a service rather than
only as a protection / monitoring tool, opens the
scope for the industry to tap into other areas of
budget rather than only loss prevention and
health and safety.
Alistair Enser –
Reliance High-Tech
Things often go full circle.
Once upon a time we ordered
items from catalogue
companies and received them
by courier. Then, large out of
town retail outlets became the
rage, and now we have reverted back to ‘online
catalogues’ such as Amazon with courier
deliveries!
Likewise, in the 1990s many security
integrators and distributors sold lease services
– something that had cashflow, accessibility and
tax advantages. Fast forward to 2019 and as a
service (aaS) is de rigueur again.
Within the security sector the aaS service
model gives end users a lower cost entry point,
which invariably drives higher volumes for
integrators and distributors. It allows a service
to adapt based upon changing business needs,
providing flexibility for end users and a revenue
stream for integrators, without too much heavy
lifting in terms of hardware change.
Today, differentiation within a security
solution comes in the form of the services
offered by the integrator such as remote
monitoring, maintenance and support, as well
as innovative software features enabled within
products. The actual cost of hardware compared
to the overall solution may be relatively low,
making the aaS model financially viable.
Recurring revenue models generally drive
strong demand in markets where large capital
purchases are a barrier to entry. For example,
Netflix has a zero hardware entry cost and has
negated the need for long-term contracts, as the
service has no payback risk. This results in a
high degree of customer uptake, and a
sustainable and secure revenue stream.
Although this is attractive to the security
market, integrators need to cover or amortise
upfront installation costs, which could be
www.psimagazine.co.uk
difficult. Likewise, distributors have to choose
between a lower monthly income with a longterm
arrangement or a one off profit.
For the end user ‘servitisation’ is really a
question of opportunity cost. Some models
could even be self-funding eg could AI, data
analytics and video forensics provide a faster
more efficient way to reduce manual workload
and operator costs? We are continually
reassessing these technological and market
opportunities.
Anthony King –
Square One
The sense is, that we are
drawing increasingly closer to
this model of
Software/Security as a Service
(SaaS), as the use of CCTV
cloud storage services
becomes an ever increasing reality. SaaS
providers such as Ocucon, are now already
deploying this model of no upfront installation
and equipment costs and replacing this with a
monthly subscription service. I believe we will
start to see global players such as Amazon and
Google, back and support these SaaS initiatives,
that will provide both challenge and opportunity
to installers and manufactures. The shift change
in using CCTV coupled with Artificial Intelligence
(AI) to drive CCTV to be proactive and generating
Intelligence Assisted (IA) solutions, means we
are moving towards the installation and
provision of equipment becoming only a
necessary requirement to generate the data
needed to drive future solutions.
Rob Evans – CSL
This type of business model is
not something new and
manufacturers have been
utilising its commercial
benefits for some time. The
annuity model breaks down
the upfront cost which can
potentially spoil a customer’s initial
commitment. This model has then been
replicated as businesses continue to introduce
new products and services into the sector –
often enabling them to prevent encroachment
by companies from other industries. Asking
Installers, both small and large, to part with a
substantial amount of money at the start of a
project can be limiting so it is important to do
whatever is possible to help them get the
(from previous page)
product on the wall. There is some element of
risk here for the manufacturer, but with most
installations having at least a 7-year lifespan,
there is plenty of scope to estimate the
necessary annual or monthly costs required to
ensure the product is viable for a business.
In the future this could be replicated across
other areas of the market or within solutions.
The way that hardware has morphed into
software through SIMs is particularly
interesting. If all the smart technology is on the
independent SIM then, in theory, you can
negotiate with Mobile Network Operators on
their tariffs to ensure your business gets the
best deal. This would have been unthinkable
years ago, but it now reveals a new business
stream that will ultimately drive reliability and
value for the end-user.
Billy Hopkins – IDIS
IoT and the advent of 5G
certainly opens various
options to package up and
sell simple surveillance
setups in various guises. It’s a
business model that in theory
speeds up sales by avoiding capex expenditure
and one that is designed to lock customers into
long term contracts.
Yet leasing has been an option for years,
and most end users still prefer to pay for their
hardware upfront as building business cases
based on lifecycle costs means a mindset
change in most sectors.
We’re already seeing the big IT and
automation players taking advantage of
commoditized hardware as they are positioned
to absorb manufacturing and distribution costs.
The ‘race to the bottom’ has already made
cameras relatively low cost, so today small
Video-Surveillance as-a-Service (VSaas)
systems offer cheap cameras with free software
and storage.
This increased commoditization together
with the prevalence of DIY, plug-and-play
systems is likely to further negatively impact
on the perceived value of professional,
accredited installers. And it’s difficult to see a
value-add role for distributors outside of
logistics services. To take ‘servitisation’ to an
advanced level, means manufacturers no
longer selling units, but offering end-to-end
solutions based on the entire lifespan,
usability, maintenance and services. There
could be some short-term wins for installers
through subcontracting but in the longer term,
outside of acquisition, that isn’t a promising
outlook.
For most commerical applications, end users
want specialist cameras plus an integrated,
best-in-breed mix of technology and secure
storage combined with tailored, professional
services to meet their physical security
challenges without increasing their cyber risk.
That mix of tech and expertise is an almost
impossible off-the-shelf licensing proposition.
There also remains a high demand for NVR
based-surveillance as costs can be more than
50% lower compared to server-based systems.
As such, there is always going to be an upfront
cost for hardware.
Flip this around and security manufacturers
can also easily offer free software as the
marginal cost is lower. If surveillance
manufacturers aren’t doing this for small to
mid-sized applications that might be another
question worth asking.
Chris Stott –
Hadrian Technology
Subsidised hardware for
specific applications or
Software as a Service (SaaS)
platforms offers significant
opportunities for the
surveillance industry, both
for installers and the channel partners
typically required to deliver this kind of multivendor
system approach.
There are already a number of examples in
other industries of SaaS providers offering
hardware as part of their product offer without
upfront costs, and it’s only a matter of time
before this becomes more common within the
surveillance industry. But if this is to be
successful and prove a compelling proposition
for customers, then we need to do more than
just remove upfront costs.
Typically companies will remove upfront
costs by back-loading costs at the end of a
contract, which at best offers limited benefit to
customers other than delaying payment and at
worst, the lack (or perceived lack) of
transparency can negatively impact the
consumer relationship. Instead the real
opportunity for software providers is to
identify ways to structure the business model
so that we can offset the cost of hardware
entirely and communicate this to customers
openly and transparently.”
How far has AI come?
Martin Gren, founder of Axis
Communications, looks at how far
AI has come and what it
potentially can do for society and
surveillance
ince the term was introduced in 1956, the
SAI technology has gone from being hailed
as the key to a bright new future, to
complete failure, to an interesting tool for many
applications, including surveillance. Since 2015,
AI technology – or at least the embryo of it – has
become part of our everyday lives and is
currently a popular tagline in many applications.
We might be far from a truly intelligent
machine, but AI technology is used in voice
recognition and search engines, as well as in
healthcare where it can help identifying
indicators for cancer. However, translations still
have a way to go (as anyone who has read a
machine-translated text will vouch for) and so
far, we only have prototypes for self-driving cars
and service robots.
Some people expect AI to eventually become
a game-changer in surveillance solutions and
it’s easy to understand why. AI systems are able
to analyze huge amounts of data, which of
course is advantageous when you have to
review hours of surveillance images. By
“learning” how the observed object moves, how
tall or small it is, whether it has two arms and
two legs and how fast it is going, the AI
application ranks the information and decides
whether it is probable that the object is human,
for example. The system can also be
programmed to tell you in what direction the
object is moving and whether there is more than
one object. This kind of functionality is common
in the field of safety and security today.
AI in surveillance – design
A surveillance solution – with or without AI – is
rarely an off-the-shelf solution since every
business and every premise are unique.
Understanding the primary purpose of the
system and how the footage eventually might
be used is essential. And image usability can
only be achieved if the system has been
adapted to the specific conditions of the
www.psimagazine.co.uk
premise and if it’s properly maintained. To
succeed the primary focus therefore can’t be on
the technology, but always on the solution of a
particular use case. Only as part of a complete
and well-designed solution, where human
expertise has taken all kinds of considerations
into account, can AI offer great opportunities
within surveillance.
AI in surveillance – advantages
Whenever there is a need to process and
analyze huge amounts of data, computers beat
humans. A well-trained AI can take this to an
even higher level of data and image analysis.
This functionality can be of practical use in
many applications.
AI in surveillance: challenges
It’s easy to get carried away by the potential of
AI in a range of applications, such as
improvement of configuration, system
optimization, site design, image configuration,
and device management. However, there are still
fundamental challenges that need to be solved.
Conclusion
AI systems have developed quickly over the past
years and show potential within the field of
surveillance, but we are far from having
developed human-level intelligence, or “true”
AI. It will take some time before we see selflearning
surveillance systems that can make
accurate assumptions in general scenarios
without risking too many false alarms or the
violation of people’s integrity.
Whenever there is a
need to process and
analyze huge amounts
of data, computers
beat humans
UNSUNG HEROES
“An engineer you can trust”
Behind the scenes, away from the spotlight of media coverage and awards
nights, you’d find David Snook working on technology that would change
the industry forever. His impact has been undeniable and cannot be
exaggerated as PSI reports...
In today’s narcissistic social media-led society,
people are often well-known and receive
masses of media coverage without having any
perceivable talent or skill. Simply by taking
multiple photos of yourself pouting can get you
attention all over the world.
In business however it’s not quite the same –
none of us are ever really aware of making any
impact upon the industry or customer base we
serve and do our jobs without any expectation of
reward or desire for the limelight. Maybe this will
change in the future as the approval-seeking
generation comes on-board, but for the moment
many of those approaching the end of their
careers will not be aware of how much of an
impression they will be leaving behind when they
step away and they won’t ask for recognition
either.
One such person is David Snook, one of the
original directors of Scantronic where he was the
Technical Director from the very start, who then
went on to design for CSL DualCom, Dycon and
Yale. You may not know his name, but as an
installer you will have fitted technology that he
designed – no matter where you are in the world,
and you will have benefitted as a result.
“David paved the way for keypad control
panels as we know them today,” says long-time
colleague and friend Tony Makosinski of Dycon
Power Solutions. “He originated all the Scantronic
greats, the massively popular 9100, 9200, 9600
and 9800 and most of those panels are still
operating. If you look at today’s alarm control
panels, in their DNA you will find things that David
incorporated into those early panels; the menu
driven-operation and programming, plug on
communications, flush mounted keypads, proper
downloadable logs and much, much more.”
Wherever panels could be sold David’s
hardware sold in many hundreds of thousands of
units and they didn’t change much whichever
market they went into although he would work on
specific panels to meet each country’s standards
perhaps varying power supplies or whatever
requirements his research found necessary and
factor that into redesigns.
After Scantronic, where he perfected the first
Digicom, he went on to work on the DualCom
products for CSL bringing a new kind of
technology to alarm communication.
“Most of the DualComs out there were laid out
and designed by Dave Snook which is amazing
UNSUNG HEROES
(from previous page)
because there must be half a million of them in
use today,” says Simon Banks of CSL. “He made
extremely reliable hardware and knew how to
source good componentry at a good price to make
truly robust and viable systems. I can’t stress how
valuable he was to the success of the company,
and to honest we still turn out around 10,000
hardware products a month and most of those
were designed by him.”
David was the pioneer of using
microprocessors in security systems and talking
to his colleagues it’s clear that he was one of
those rare breeds of designers that listened to the
customer and also provided them with something
they didn’t know they needed.
“He is a very humble guy,” continues Simon
Banks. “He’s not the sort to boast about what he
does – he just gets on with it. I’m sure he’s never
thought about it, but his work has been very much
appreciated, not just by those he worked with but
by all of the installers who used his products and
their customers who he helped keep secure. I have
huge respect for him and most engineers will
agree that David’s designs were bullet-proof which
is why whatever he worked on was a success.”
David, a people person, got on well with both
technical and non-technical people although he
did like an argument about technical issues!
Those who worked with him knew how he was a
terrier when he could make a system work more
reliably and he kept pushing the idea until it was
adopted, ultimately to the benefit of installers
and users alike.
Many was the time David and his colleagues
worked late into the night before an IFSEC or an
Essen show to finish a stand because he had
wanted to show off his latest innovation the next
morning and they would work late until he had it
working.
“I first met David in 1984 when I was running
Intercept Alarms and needed a more modern way
of signalling alarm conditions,” recalls Tony
Makosinski. “David had just perfected the first
Scantronic Digicom and that gave me the answer!
Not many people realise that David also designed
the original Yale DIY alarm systems that became
the top seller in DIY stores throughout the world.
Not only could he design new technology for the
professional alarm market, but he proved here
that he could raise the standard for nonregulated,
DIY alarms that impacted on many a
layman’s idea of security as well.”
Despite recent health issues David is still
innovating today with Dycon Power Solutions,
designing and making reliable, British-made
power supplies, using his unique lateral-thinking
solutions.
“In his prime he would have given
Elon Musk’s top engineers a run
for their money”
“In his prime he would have given Elon Musk’s
top engineers a run for their money,” said Tony.
“He always engineered for quality but unlike a lot
of purists he knew it had to be competitive to sell
- he is an engineer you can trust.”
Visit any online forum and when the subject of
those early Scantronic panels crops up you will
see comments such as “91s are great”, and “it
ruled the waves” being typical of the continued
respect that the units garner today which is
extraordinarily rare for any form of technology.
After all, in the time since those panels came out
we’ve seen countless other systems come and go
into obsolescence while David’s designs still
prosper.
It is often said that there’s nothing really new
in the electronic security industry and that’s
probably due to the fact that David Snook has
already thought of it. We won’t see an innovator
like him again for a long time, if ever. It’s right and
proper that we recognise his contribution to the
worldwide, widespread success of the alarm
panels and systems he designed.
The respect he has from within the sector is
unmatched and his hardware designs and
technology will continue to be the backbone of
the industry for many, many years. There aren’t
too many designers that can boast that of their
career output. David Snook could, but he
probably wouldn’t want to.
BENCHMARK
EVENT
SiX
2 19
November 5/6
In Association with:
Growing support for SiX
This year sees the inaugural
installer event SiX at EventCity in
Manchester in November. Here we
continue our preview of what is in
store for those attending and
reveal yet more organisations
joining up to support the show
s we discussed previously,SiX is aimed
Asquarely at the security installer and
system integrator. Running on 5-6th
November 2019, the event will offer a
conference programme delivered by experts, not
manufacturers or government bodies, alongside
an exhibition at EventCity Manchester. In
addition, the annual PSI Premier Awards Dinner
will be held on the evening of 5th November.
There are a number of reasons why PSI
publisher Pro-Activ took the decision to host the
show including the location, the timing and the
installer audience which has told us for some
time that they want their own event.
Industry approval for SiX
In the last month we have received the support
of two more industry organisations with both
the SSAIB and NSI publicly putting their seal of
approval on SiX. This level of backing, from the
two main security approval bodies in the UK
alongside that of the FIA, BSIA and FSA
indicates the desire within the industry for an
installer focused event that addresses the needs
of the professional fire and security market.
But don’t take our word for it:
“The Fire & Security
Association (FSA) is
keen to improve the
professionalism of our
industry and boost
commercial
opportunities for our members. We
see the SiX event as being key to
developing relationships across
the sector and vital for installers
looking to broaden their knowledge
and businesses”
– Steve Martin, FSA
“We see SiX as a
fantastic opportunity
to engage with
installers to discuss
standards and
regulations and how
we can raise the
professionalism of the security
industry. We invite all of our
members to come to Manchester
in November for the inaugural
event.” – Andrew Brown, SSAIB
“The FIA is the largest
fire protection trade
association in Europe
with more than 850
members. Our
objective is to
promote, improve and perfect fire
protection methods, devices,
services and apparatus and we
see SiX as being a great way to
help us to deliver on those
messages by informing
specifically targeting installers”
– Ian Moore, FIA
“As the mark of
approval for elite
companies within the
security and fire
safety sectors, the
National Security
Inspectorate (NSI) is delighted to
be supporting the new SiX event.
It represents another valuable
opportunity for security systems
installers across the UK to
connect, broaden knowledge and
further raise standards within the
sector.” – Richard Jenkins, NSI
Meet the installer
Security life with Andy Convery
of IPSS in Coventry
Do you use a distributor or buy direct?
We do both with a lot of our products and
equipment sourced through Mayflex and NBM.
We buy the Smokecloak systems direct. We've
been with Mayflex for years and it's our most
predominantly used account for the products that
we use and install.
Is third party accreditation beneficial to
your company?
It's extremely beneficial and our approval through
an independent audit proves to our customers
and others in the sector that we are professional
in the way we work and run our business. We have
always looked at gaining accreditations for the
work that we do and in the last four months we
have secured our NSI NACOSS Gold,
SafeContractor, ISO9001 and CHAS for over five
employees to go alongside our CyberEssentials.
Now that we are NSI Gold it brings to the
forefront our credentials as installers. This means
that when we advise our customers I think that
brings it more to their attention because we are
coming from a position of authority.
To be honest, in the past I always thought
gaining approval was just a tick-box exercise, but
having gone through the process I know that’s not
the case. The two auditors we've had in were
fantastic, in fact I can say that the whole of the
NSI has helped us. It's great that what we do can
be measured to such a very high standard.
Name: Andy Convery
What would be a typical project for you?
We are concentrating on our B2B customers. Our
specialist area is the open campus environment
and we advise, design, install and support
customers who have large dynamic areas. It’s
highly challenging as the security threat can
change dramatically and quickly within these
areas and with our guidance, this is controlled.
We like to be dynamic in what we install and so
limit ourselves to a number of products that have
been tried and tested and are proved to work in
these environments. We predominantly use
Avigilon and Mobotix because it's really good kit
and it works all the time.
We do very little for domestic customer
anymore. There are so many basic security
products out there for homeowners that can be
bought online or in your local DIY outlets. It
makes our high quality products and professional
installation a hard sell.
Are there any common requests from
customers that give you problems?
There isn't anything specific but I do think that
there is a lack of knowledge with some customers
as to what they are going to get and what it can
do. They don't really understand the technology
and because we have a regular request to install
systems after a security problem has occurred,
they don't necessarily want to spend any time
looking at different options.
What is the best thing about working in
security?
When I was a kid I always wanted to go into the
armed forces and never did, but I now feel like I'm
helping bring security in another way. Our key
area is academia and we want to make schools,
colleges and universities safer because we
believe in education and ensuring that our
children are given all of the chances possible in a
safe environment. We want to make sure they're
safe by offering a professional service and making
sure that people feel secure. Nowadays situations
can change quickly and dramatically.
Is there is a security skills shortage?
Yes, there is a massive shortage of talent. We've
just gone through a recruitment process for a new
engineer. We got the feeling that those applying
knew about the skills shortage and had the
attitude that they could ask for more money than
their talent actually warranted.
We need more qualified engineers and for a
better educated public on the benefits of using
approved companies. There is a massive shortage
and it's difficult to train your own engineers.
While we were researching apprenticeship
courses we only found one course within the
whole of the UK that met our criteria so enrolling
people on this course would require them to
travel into Knutsford (nearly 100 miles each way).
What will be the impact of smart/home
automation on the security sector?
While the take-up of the technology is growing
and is heavily marketed we need to ensure that
the public is made aware of any relevant
legislation and emphasise the importance of
having the system installed and maintained by
professional, accredited installers. All of the
marketing is telling people they can fit it
themselves so there's no guarantee it will be
fitted properly or in the right place which does not
make for good security. Legislation such as GDPR
and ICO registration are not common knowledge
so while people can buy cameras there's more to
fitting it than just fixing it to a wall. Another
problem with many of the home surveillance
systems is that it is nearly all internal, so it's not
protecting anything. By the time it starts
recording, it's too late.
What is the industry’s biggest myth?
It can be tricky getting beyond the mindset that
some people have about intruder alarms not
doing anything to prevent burglaries - all as a
result of bells-only systems being ignored by
passers-by. The lack of awareness about ARCs
and police response can lead people to believe
that alarms either serve no purpose or they can fit
it themselves. Only a properly installed system
will work properly.
Are you concerned about Brexit?
I think everyone has got to be concerned to some
extent. I've spoken to some very big companies
about this and for me, I think that if bigger
companies that have more money to spend on
researching these things aren't too worried then I'm
not either. My local Chamber of Commerce in
Coventry is offering a lot of support, but we still
don't really know what will happen. I think that
perhaps it's being made a drama because the
European Union is scared of us leaving as we are
such a major player – there are other countries in
Europe that aren't in the EU and they are doing fine.
What would make your job easier?
Having more people that are willing to go above
and beyond (like Sharon who works in our office)
come and work here would be great.
What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic
security product?
A camera that stops dogs from barking!
Will England ever win the football World
Cup again?
Yes - it's coming home! While the next competition
is going to be played at high temperatures in Qatar
I'm not too concerned because everyone will have
to play in the heat. I'm sure that the FA has already
planned what needs to be done in order to
compete in those conditions.
If you won £25,000 what would you do with
it?
I'd donate it to Zoe's Place, which is a local baby
hospice. It's a charity that does a lot for the kids
and their parents and I don't think they get
enough money or attention. I did a half marathon
last year for them so I support them.
ACHIEVING MORE FROM YOUR VIDEOEDGE NVRs
- Introducing the Tyco Analytics and Transcoder add-on appliances
Stuart Bettle, Video Product
Marketing Manager EMEA for
Tyco, the security products division
of Johnson Controls, showcases
the new Tyco Analytics and
Transcoder appliances.
he massive processing power built into
TVideoEdge NVRs means that users can take
advantage of a long list of practical features
which add greatly to the effectiveness of a video
surveillance system. Uniquely, these include a
wide range of analytics which are integrated
with Tyco’s victor video management software to
help businesses improve productivity, as well as
assist security personnel to respond quickly and
effectively to any events.
Built-in intelligence also allows VideoEdge
NVR users to receive multiple video streams for
live, recorded, alarm and meta-data collection,
all tailored to viewing conditions.
Although VideoEdge NVRs utilise a
customised version of SUSE Linux installed as a
Just enough Operating System (JeOS) to always
deliver the best possible performance, some
additional processing power may occasionally
be needed to ensure an end-user can achieve
maximum benefit from their video surveillance
solution.
• The Tyco Analytics appliance for when more
video intelligence is required
Operating on a space saving, small-form Intel
NUC platform, the Tyco Analytics appliance
supports VideoEdge NVRs by providing the
addition of 4 License Plate Recognition (LPR)
channels or up to 16 channels of video
intelligence, such as perimeter protection,
object detection, queue management, crowd
formation or dwell detection.
The Tyco Analytics add-on appliance can be
used for its prime purpose of providing
additional LPR or analytics channels, or simply
to reduce the CPU workload of a VideoEdge NVR
so that it performs even better in terms of its
recording capabilities when there is a need, for
example, to add more cameras to the system.
The Tyco Analytics appliance can also be
used in support of exacqVision recording
www.psimagazine.co.uk
solutions,
thereby
providing
exacqVision
users with
the
opportunity
to benefit
from same
video analytics
available with the
VideoEdge NVRs.
• The Tyco Transcoder
appliance for when best use of available
bandwidth is required
The Tyco Transcoding appliance adds 14
additional transcoding channels to those
already available on VideoEdge NVRs, each of
which dynamically manipulates the properties
of video streams in order to better manage
network bandwidth and resources. This smart
method of streaming video ensures that
network bandwidth is not used unnecessarily
when, for example, 5 megapixel images from 4
cameras are simultaneously streamed to a
control room, but are then displayed on a 2
megapixel monitor. Transcoding will ensure that
resolution streamed from the 4 cameras will
match the capability of the monitor.
Also operating on a small-form from factor
platform, the Tyco Transcoder can be added to
an individual VideoEdge NVR or a group which
automatically share its resources as required.
Why VideoEdge?
Analytics and Transcoder
appliances
• VideoEdge, one of the electronic security industry’s fastest and most
powerful range of NVRs, is available with a full range of intuitive clients to
FIRE SAFETY
How to break into the fire
detection and alarms sector
By George Day, Electrical Maintenance Technician currently
studying the FIA fire detection and alarm qualifications
For those of you who are involved – or
interested in getting involved - in fire detection
and alarm systems design, installation, and
maintenance, there are a number of routes into
developing those skills needed to survive in the
sector.
For those of you looking for a bit of advice about
how to go about getting qualified in fire detection
and alarms, listen up.
The sheer number and range of available
courses available online can be daunting. Many
you can rule out immediately, and others hold no
merit in the real world, as they don’t lead to a
qualification. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking
that any course will do the job – it’s your money
and time, and your education (or your team’s
education) after all.
In my experience, seeking answers and
guidance on LinkedIn helps. When I was searching
for a course, I connected with many established
and successful Fire & Security Engineers currently
employed within the industry. I’m grateful to have
such helpful connections with a wealth of
knowledge, who offered invaluable hints and tips.
Building my network on LinkedIn really helped,
as time after time the same name was mentioned
and I was quickly pointed towards the Fire Industry
Association (FIA) website. If you’re going to
expand your current business into the fire
detection and alarm sector, or you’re like me and
just looking to gain employment in this area, then
building a network of connections and getting
yourself onto the FIA website and seeing what they
have to offer really helps.
When I first visited the FIA website, I was
instantly impressed by the professionalism of the
FIA, and their dedication to Fire Safety.
The FIA are currently in the last phases of
developing a new range of nationally recognised
formal qualifications which will likely be the new
professional standard for the fire industry. A month
after release, I reserved a space on the FIA AO
Foundation in Fire Detection and Alarm course.
I chose the to train with the FIA because they
offer the most comprehensive, relevant fire safety
training available in the UK today and offer a
course designed for anyone, at any stage of their
career in the fire detection and alarm sector, which
was perfect for myself.
For those of you who may have heard of the FIA
qualifications but don’t know much about them,
there are four qualifications you can get: Advanced
Fire Detection and Alarm Design, Installation,
Maintenance, and Commissioning (one for each of
those areas). I decided I wanted to get qualified in
Advanced Fire Detection and Alarm Maintenance.
The FIA has a range of qualifications available in
fire detection and alarm systems. The
qualifications are made up of a range of units,
which, upon successful completion, will lead to a
Level 3 qualification on the Regulated
Qualifications Framework (RQF).
The qualifications are fully recognised by the
official government bodies for education and
qualifications in England, Wales, and Northern
Ireland.
The idea behind the new qualifications is that it
will bring in new people to the industry, and help
drive up the level of professionalism across the
industry. For someone like me, it’s an opportunity
to expand my skills.
My professional background is not from security
installation or the fire industry but from the Royal
Air Force. At the age of 24, I began a career in the
RAF as a trainee electrician. After completion of a
military apprenticeship, I gained further experience
and was selected for promotion.
ii
www.psimagazine.co.uk

I'm now employed as an Electrical Maintenance
Technician and Junior Manager. I’m responsible for
the scheduled and reactive maintenance, fault
diagnosis and rectification of Aircraft Ground Support
Equipment (AGSE), Airport X-Ray security equipment,
specialist airfield and emergency vehicles.
I'm also a member of the Institution of
Engineering and Technology (TMIET), and I have
completed an NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma in
Electrical Engineering Maintenance, as well as
holding an ILM Level 3 and City & Guilds Level 4 in
Leadership and Management. I have recently
registered with the Engineering Council (UK) and
have been professionally recognised as an
Engineering Technician and should soon hold the
title of EngTech.
I’ll soon have served a full 22 years career in
the Royal Air Force and on completion of service
I’ll be seeking new employment and new
challenges and firmly believe that planning will be
paramount to my success. I’ve investigated
numerous roles, trades, opportunities and spoke
to many industry professionals, both in person
and via LinkedIn. The input and support I’ve
received has been fantastic and with that came
suggestions for future roles and employment, one
industry stood out - the fire industry.
After being employed in a professional
engineering environment for over 21 years it’s
“My advice to those looking to get qualified, especially if
you aren’t directly in the sector – perhaps you’re a security
installer – is to look for accredited courses that can expand
your skillset and demonstrate your professionalism”
something I’m determined to continue doing, with
that in mind - I knew that gaining relevant
qualifications in the fire industry would be
essential.
I’d need to find accredited courses that would
guide me through the basics and build to a level of
good understanding, coupled with that – they
needed to offer industry recognised qualifications -
that’s where my search began.
My advice to those looking to get qualified,
especially if you aren’t directly in the sector –
perhaps you’re a security installer – is to look for
accredited courses that can expand your skillset
and demonstrate your professionalism. Getting a
bonafide qualification holds more worth than a
simple training course. That’s why I chose to study
the FIA fire detection and alarm qualifications.
So far, I have attended and passed the first unit
of the FIA qualifications, the FIA AO Foundation in
Fire Detection and Alarm, the starting point for the
full qualification and more recently attended the
FIA AO Environmental Requirements for Field
Service Technicians.
undoubtedly help me earn the full FIA qualification to
Advanced Maintainer”
I have also recently passed the ECS Health &
Safety Assessment and have plans to apply for an
ECS card. All of these together mean that I am now
three quarters of the way through the FIA
Qualifications Pathway. The next step is the
Advanced Maintainer unit, which, upon
successfully passing, I will be fully qualified in fire
detection and alarm maintenance.
I’m particularly looking forward to studying the
next stage in the qualification. The Advanced
Maintainer unit is comprehensive and helps
service technicians to become specialists in fire
detection and alarm maintenance, including fault
finding, false alarm management, and BS 5839.
The FIA courses that I’ve attended so far have
provided me with a great starting point and solid
grounding, that will undoubtedly help me earn the
full FIA qualification to Advanced Maintainer. The
course content and the way in which it was
delivered has given me a much better
understanding of fire standards and the codes of
practice. I'd definitely recommend it if you’re
looking to up-level your skills.
So far, the qualification course has taken me
from a complete beginner, with little knowledge to
the point where I now have a much greater
understanding of Fire Detection, Alarms and fire
safety and I feel much more confident moving
forward onto the remaining courses. I believe as I
move into the industry and gain ‘hands on’
experience everything will fall into place and the
knowledge I’ve gained can be put into practice.
The final food for thought I’ll leave you with is
about the quality of the teachers or tutors that you
get. The FIA trainers were great. They presented
the course in a professional and approachable
manner, breaking the training sessions up with
questions and answers, quizzes, and small group
discussions, which kept all the people on the
course attentive and involved.
The tutors were more than happy to make
themselves available to answer any question and
explain anything that wasn’t understood over
lunch and rest breaks, which was much
appreciated.
The qualification has changed how I see
buildings. Now when I walk into buildings, I find
myself asking questions about Manual Call
Points, escape routes, the sighting of control and
indicating equipment, and the location of the log
book!
The course has without doubt educated and
equipped me with a wealth of information and
hopefully take forward into a new role within the
industry.
And before you start wondering whether the
course is right for you – it is. The FIA are currently
the only course that offer an actual qualification at
Level 3 on the RQF.
Of course, effort is required and a certain
amount of self-discipline and self-guided study is
recommended – but achieving the certificate after
all that hard work only makes it all the more
worthwhile.
Pulse Alert Technology
Pulse Alert is able to provide EN54-23-compliant
breakthroughs:
• Intelligent Power Management -Pulse Alert
converts power intelligently, minimising power
usage and presenting a near-perfect current source
to fire alarm panels. This means the Sonos Pulse
and Nexus Pulse VADs require less power than
previous models, while also exceeding EN54-23
light output requirements.
• LED Drive - Pulse Alert features the latest,
wider coverage area per device reduces both the
number of devices required and expensive cabling
requirements, whilst low current consumption
removes the need for additional power supplies.
With a greater coverage pattern, fewer devices
are needed to cover open areas. Sonos Pulse
KEEPING STARS AND
SPECTATORS SAFE
A highly intelligent Syncro AS control panel from
Kentec, a life safety control systems
manufacturer, integrated with COSMO PSIM+
software is helping protect visitors, staff and
actors at a National Theatre in Lisbon, Portugal
he theatre is hugely
Tpopular and regularly
welcomes high
attendances (up to 1,000
people) to hundreds of
different shows and
performances each year,
including plays, concerts
and dances.
COSMO PSIM+ software
was approached by the theatre to create a centralised, userfriendly
management system to control and monitor more than
300 fire detection devices across nine floors, as well as having
the ability to open fire escape doors remotely. They selected
Kentec’s technology as an integral part of the project.
Syncro AS is a multi-protocol panel that offers maximum
choice in system design. Fully scalable and networked to become
part of much larger systems if the need arises, it provides a
solution for any size of installation.
Fernando Santos, Director of Development and Integration at
COSMO PSIM+ software, says: “This project posed some key
challenges as the theatre puts on a number of performances
and shows that use smoke and/or flames as part of their act.
Kentec’s Syncro AS control panel is able to accommodate these
challenges, while its large graphical display and ergonomic
button and indicator layout make it simple and straightforward
to understand.”
All events, alarms and warnings are now reported on a single
panel, allowing a faster and more accurate response to each
case. To enable remote opening of doors, an I/O controller was
used, allowing COSMO PSIM+ to send commands to configured
devices.
Kevin Swann, Managing Director at Kentec, says Syncro AS
offers a number of benefits: “Our products are designed and
manufactured with the installer and end-user in mind. Its
enhanced integration capability mean it is a perfect fit for COSMO
PSIM+ software and this theatre project. The scalability of Syncro
AS offers great flexibility and its clear display and controls make
it easy to use for installers
and our customers.”
FIRE SAFETY
The Italian Job
As part of a project to revitalise a semi-abandoned
Venetian suburb, and transform the district of Mestre from
industrial precinct to recreational hotspot, HTM Hybrid
Tower has undergone an extensive redevelopment. The
project was supported by Hochiki Italia, the Italian arm of
leading life safety systems manufacturer, Hochiki, who
were selected to provide solutions that would protect this
now iconic building and its occupants.
TM Hybrid Tower is
Hthe tallest building
in the Venice
metropolitan area,
standing at 84 metres
tall. The redevelopment
of the tower, which was
previously occupied by
one of Italy’s most
prevalent transport
providers, cost €18
million in total.
The 19 floors of the
HTM Hybrid Tower are
comprised of commercial
offices, a beauty centre
and residential and retail
environments, as well as
dining and garage
spaces. Comin Impianti
srl, a local civil and
industrial systems
installer, was selected to
specify solutions which
would meet the needs of such a versatile
building.
The installers chose to specify Hochiki fire
detection systems which would suit each of the
different environments within the tower.
Working closely with Comin Impianti srl, Hochiki
Italia identified a need to use solutions that
could be networked with one another via
multiple control panels, programmed in a way
so that each device is interconnected.
It was also essential that the system was
capable of identifying issues and reasons for
alarm quickly, to give building occupants as
much warning as possible.
Hochiki Italia specified a range of solutions
from the Enhanced Systems Protocol (ESP)
range to meet these challenges. The collection
of intelligent, addressable fire detection and
alarm equipment offers HTM Tower high
performance and reliability, combined with an
enhanced open protocol, giving building owners
the added control of their systems.
Over 180 ALN-EN smoke detectors and ten
ACC-EN multi-sensors were installed throughout
HTM Hybrid Tower. The devices can all be
controlled from eight panels networked so that,
in instances where there is cause for alarm
and/or evacuation, only affected zones will be
notified.
In addition, Hochiki’s devices offer both
visual and audio alerts, which can be
individually managed so only one operates in a
given zone when needed, reducing the need for
a full building evacuation for minor incidents.
Ezio Danese, Project Manager at Hochiki
Italia noted: “Mixed use sites like the HTM
Hybrid Tower require a range of complex
devices. As well as solutions that offer
unrivalled reliability, it is essential to use
products that can be networked to suit specific
environmental considerations.
“A restaurant kitchen will require very
different levels of monitoring compared to a
garage space, and these variables need to be
monitored and controlled. The Hochiki ESP
range allows building owners to do just that,
giving them a control system that can be
tailored to ensure optimum performance.”
Angelo Comin, owner of Comin Impianti srl
said: “The HTM Hybrid Tower is a contemporary,
hybrid project, where multiple functional levels
co-exist. Protecting such a complex structure
from the risk of fire was a challenge. However,
the fact that Hochiki systems are able to
communicate on the network was a key element
in the specification process”
“It is also an added benefit that the
solution’s audio and visual capabilities can be
managed separately which helps avoid
unnecessary panic in case of a false alarm.”
Hochiki systems are now installed and fully
operational throughout the occupied floors.
detection to suit a multitude of environments.
REVIEWS
CCTV – TRIED & TESTED
An overview of some of the products we have featured in PSI independent
test reports. This month we highlight recent CCTV reviews; products are listed
in no particular order. As always, manufacturers and distributors have no input
in the test reports or results
Bosch – Flexidome NDE-4502-AL
This is a compact, easy to install, ONVIF compliant dome with a remote
zoom and focus 3mm to 10mm auto-iris lens. It provides up to two 1920
x1080p streams with a third using MJPEG. Both H.264 and H.265 are
supported. A wide selection of video analytic features along with local
alarm input & output connection and audio line in and out. Infrared illumination is quoted
to 30 metres.
Review: A very capable camera with good sensitivity and 1080p HD detail. Can be configured
to record directly to iSCSI drive as well as its optional internal Micro SD card. Web access to
relevant information is not a straightforward as it
could be.
IDIS – DC-Y3C14WRX
This is a 180° “Fisheye” IP dome with built-in infrared
illumination. It supports two-way audio, alarm input and
outputs and a range of viewing modes.
Review: This is a well-built 180° camera with some very
flexible display modes. For maximum benefit it would
ideally be used with an IDIS NVR or front end but
works well with the supplied software or Web viewer.
Concept Pro – CP-HSD20-AHD
This Concept Pro IP66 IK10 rated speed-dome is based on the Starvis 1/2.8” CMOS
sensor, giving a 2MP (1920 x 1080p) image with a 20x zoom lens and in-built infrared
illuminators with a stated range of up to 150 metres. A 30x zoom version is also
available. The camera provides outputs for all the main analogue HD formats such as
AHD, CVI, TVI along with the digital over coax SDI standard.
Review: An interesting highly sensitive HD speed dome that gives a potentially easy route to
changing from analogue HD to IP based viewing and control, compatible with all key analogue HD
systems. Some of the camera’s core configuration options are not currently
accessible via the browser but possibly may be included in a future
firmware version.
Vista – VK2-MP4XVDIR28V12M
This dome is a 4MP vandal resistant model from the Vista VK2 range, with IP66
and IK10 protection ratings. A motorised 2.8 to 12 mm lens allows simple
adjustment of the required field of view once installed. H.264 and H.265 formats
are available with up to four streams. IR LED illumination is stated up to 25 metres.
Review: A well-featured external vandal resistant camera with excellent resolution and good sensitivity.
Support documentation is of a good standard. Additional software performed reasonably well.
SMOKE DETECTION
Hikvision – DS-2CD4A26FWD
This camera is a high-end outdoor bullet camera identified as part of
Hikvision’s DarkFighter range. The camera offers very high sensitivity and
1920 x 1080p HD performance with pre-installed firmware to provide video
analytic functions. These can be selected from options including Audio
Exception, Defocus, Scene Change, Face, Line Crossing, Intrusion, Region Entrance,
Region Exiting, Unattended Baggage and Object Removal Detection.
Review: The wide range of detection methods mean that this camera can fulfil the majority of current security video tasks. Its builtin
Infrared illuminator range and high sensitivity provide very good image quality even in challenging conditions.
Tyco – Illustra Flex IFS02P6INWIT
This Indoor HD PTZ dome is from the Illustra Flex range and has a 30 times optical and
12 times digital zoom range with IR illumination up to 25 metres. An external variant
has IR support to 150 metres.
Review: A very well constructed PTZ camera unit with straightforward connection and
configuration. Some minor issues encountered with setup functions and lens performance but overall,
good image quality and extended zoom range.
Hanwha Techwin – Wisenet PNM-9320VQP
The Wisenet PNM-9320VQP is a relatively large assembly that can house up
to 4 fixed camera modules for wide area coverage and with a PTZ camera
beneath fitted with a 32x zoom lens of 4.44mm to 142.6mm. The wide
range of fixed camera modules means that the camera can cover a full 360° field of view or 4
specific narrower views to suit the surveillance requirement.
Review: An interesting device to provide wide area surveillance with PTZ
support for close-up or automated tracking of subjects. The single network
connection means that an existing network camera can be upgraded to a multiview
capability without the need for additional network hardware.
Dahua DH-IPC-HF8835FP
This is an 8MP (UHD) box style camera with very high
sensitivity and intelligent video detection capabilities. It is
promoted as a Starlight+ camera. Due to the large format
of the CMOS sensor used, the lens mount is an M43 (Micro
four thirds) bayonet-style connection.
Review: It is likely that lens choice will be limited for some time unless this mount finds more
common usage in the security industry. Various compact mirrorless digital cameras use the M43 format so this may be the best way to
provide a variety of options, but controlled zoom versions may be limited and expensive.
Flir – CC-3103-01-I
This is an IP66 rated corner mounting 3MP IP camera from the Flir Ariel range with
a lens viewing angle designed to provide wall to wall and ceiling to floor coverage
of the surveyed area. It has a curved front plate to ensure no grip is possible and
that no ligature can be attached. A microphone allows sound to be captured and
discrete infrared illumination is available for low or zero visible light use.
Review: This camera is very simple to get up and running and has a wide range of settings to optimise its
performance. Image quality and colour rendition is very good and alarm settings are clearly laid out and
function well. The ease of browser access was a welcome change from some supplier offerings.
PSI PREMIER AWARDS
Previous winners include CSL,
Pyronix and RISCO along with
special guests Paul Merson, Ray
Parlour and Dennis Taylor
It’s nomination time!
The 2019 PSI Premier Awards
campaign is now underway – and it
is up to you to nominate the entries
for the competition
Have you used a piece of kit or a supplier that
has been mightily impressive over the last
twelve months? As a manufacturer of
electronic security systems do you think that your
company’s products and services deserve to be
recognised as the best that the sector has to
offer? We are now asking you to tell us what the
best products are and who gives the best service
for the PSI Premier Awards 2019.
Nominate online
The annual PSI Premier Awards campaigns have
recognised innovation and the highest achievers
that the industry has to offer from across a
number of disciplines for many years.
We are now asking for nominations for the
products and services and suppliers that
installers think are the best in the market. After
the deadline we will then collate all of the entries
and, where necessary, ask a number of installers
to give us their opinions on the nominated
systems. This will give us a final listing of entries
that we know will be without anomaly.
The types of technology we are looking for are
products that are different, not “me too” systems
and we want to hear about distributors that go
above and beyond box-shifting. The UK security
market is brimming with talent so we want to
make sure we feature the best new releases of
recent times and the suppliers that give the
highest levels of support.
The PSI Premier Awards Dinner will be held on
5th November on the evening of the first day of
the new SiX event in Manchester (see elsewhere
in this edition for more info).
such as HDDs, lighting, tools etc
• Software/Signalling Product Of The Year
– Any product that operates between the user
and the system eg, apps, connectivity, VMS
• Fire Safety Product Of The Year
– Any product for fire prevention/detection
• Distributor Of The Year
The venue for this year’s PSI Premier Awards Dinner
is EventCity in Manchester
How to nominate
To make sure that your favourite product or
supplier is featured in the PSI Premier Awards
2018 you only need to visit the PSI website and
follow the nomination link to tell us:
1. Your details
2. Name of nominated product/company
3. Award category
There are no costs involved in nominating or
voting in the award campaign.
The deadline for nominations
is 3rd June 2019
Once we have compiled the list of the finalists in
each category we will run all of the details in PSI
magazine and on our website.
