EASTER
2019

Dear Parents,
We are entering into a very special season for Catholics, as this is when we remember the
sacrifices made by our Lord Jesus Christ. The school holiday not only allows us to spend time
with our family and friends but it is also an opportunity to think about our faith as we journey
through the liturgies of Holy Week. When we return to school, it will be the season of Easter
and so we will celebrate our Easter Liturgy by walking to the Good Shepherd Church on
Wednesday 24 th April.
For many students, the Easter break will also be an opportunity to prepare for GCSE and A’
level examinations. Many students are already busy revising, some of them may be attending
the Easter revision sessions at school and I wish them all every success during this important
time.
May I also take this opportunity to remind you that we re-open for the Summer term on
Tuesday 23 rd April.
I wish you all a very happy and Holy Easter and I look forward to seeing our students fully
refreshed next term.
WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY
WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY
We raised £233.03!
On Thursday 21st March the whole school
celebrated World Down Syndrome Day. It was a
busy week full of activities, awareness and
fundraising.
Students participated in a variety of events
including a colouring competition, designing
socks, guess the sweets in the jar and making
chromosome chains to display in form rooms.
On the day lots of staff and students wore odd
socks and awareness ribbons with pride.
The cake sales and tuck shop proved popular, as
always, helping to raise over £200.
We would like to thank everyone for their
support, including all the parents who kindly
donated their time and most importantly, cakes.
YEAR 12 TRIP TO LINCOLN UNIVERSITY
On 27 th March all of Year 12 had the opportunity to visit the
UCAS Fair at Lincoln University. Here they were able to talk to
over 120 different providers about the next steps on their journeys
to university and beyond. There were also talks about
apprenticeships, student finance and career pathways. A really
informative day to support our students in deciding which pathways
are right for them as they move towards life beyond Christ the King.
Mr Reddington, Head of 6th Form
Macbeth was another
huge CTK success with audiences leaving feeling
completely blown away by the amazing talent of our
students. Macbeth was brought into the 21 st Century and
onto the streets of Nottingham with revenge, power and
status at the core. With club anthems and a punk feel,
Macbeth’s banquet scene was set with a nightclub feel
with the cast creating their own ‘boomerangs’ keeping the
feel of 2019. One audience member said they “loved it
and felt like they had been in a pop video!”
Macbeth was played by Louis Leivers and Lady Macbeth
played by Neve McGuinness-Dyce. They gave outstanding
performances, as did the whole cast. Every year from Y7
to Y13 was represented and each individual student gave 100%. To tackle a Shakespearean
tragedy is no mean feat and every single cast member rose to the challenge. Here at CTK we are
very proud of our whole school productions and Macbeth, although a real challenge, was truly
outstanding.
Year 10 News
Some good news! 10 of our Year 10 students have secured a place on an army camp for a
week and 8 of our Year 10s have applied for a university taster experience. We wish them
all success in their ventures.
CATENIAN PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION
Several year 12 and 13 students have been participating in public speaking training
since December. Shannon Samecki (Y12) was chosen to represent Christ the King at the
Province 15 final of the Catenian Public Speaking Competition at Ratcliffe College which
was held on Sunday 24 th March.
It was the first all-female final in the 12 years that the competition had run and all of the
competitors performed very well in front of over 100 people. Shannon spoke on the topic
of ‘learning only comes through making mistakes’ and made the whole room laugh with
her wit and ability to craft relatable stories within her speech. The competitors spoke on a
range of topics including ‘The idea of Peace on Earth is Naïve’ and the winning speech’s
topic was ‘real love is not the stuff of pop songs’. Shannon received a certificate of
achievement and a £20 gift voucher – Well done Shannon!
INCLUSION FOOTBALL
C
ongratulations go to our
Inclusion Football Team
who on 7th March played in The SEND Football
Tournament at Harvey Haddon. It was a very
successful day as they won every game and
didn't concede a single goal!! Well done to
you all!

Careers’ Fair
On Friday 29 th March, students in Year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 had a fantastic morning, meeting over
25 different employers, when they attended our 2019 Careers’ Fair. Hosted in the School Hall,
students met with representatives from employers including Rolls Royce, HMRC, Nottingham
Building Society, NHS, RAF, Nottingham Playhouse and many more. Employers were extremely
impressed with our students; a number of Year 10 students were even able to secure work
experience placements for this summer term. There was a real buzz amongst students who clearly
enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about different careers and training pathways; as one
student put it, ‘I now have a clearer understanding of what I want to do in my future’.
Furthermore, students will be continuing to have their attention drawn to careers this week
around school as part of our academy’s ‘CTK Careers’ Week’. Students will participate in a number
of activities during form time to encourage them to consider their futures.
Year 10 students who have yet to confirm the details of their work experience placement to
myself or Mr Pringle, should do so by the deadline of Friday 5 th April, or at the earliest
opportunity after the Easter break. Support is being offered during Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday lunchtimes, however forms should be returned as soon as possible to ensure that the
necessary safety checks can be completed in time. Students who return their forms after this time,
are at greater risk of having their placement rejected, so please encourage your child to return
their form.
We are happy to tell you of a recent
success on the indoor cricket pitch for our
did not win the tournament they did win the
spirit of the games award. This was for all their
enthusiasm, support and sportsmanship.
Congratulations are in order for
past student, Kole Lambert , who
non-league side Basford United FC!
We send him all the very best!
Our year 7 mixed basketball team have been
training very hard since November in preparation for
our fixtures in the Junior NBA Basketball Tournament.
We achieved great success by beating Arnold Hill and
Chaplain’s Easter Message
Another busy term at Christ the King and I am very glad, in my first year at the school, that Bishop
Patrick has provided me with the themes to write about for each term!
During Advent, we thought about Encounter. Being able to encounter Jesus in everyday life and, if
needed, re-encounter His love. So in order to develop this encounter into a faith experience, we
need to follow Jesus. And that is what the Bishop’s theme for Lent has been, Discipleship.
In theory, this should be the easier of the two, you simply just have to follow someone. Follow
their example. You do not need to come up with any ideas or create and implement certain
projects. You simple follow them. Well, that sounds like quite a big challenge to me.
We were not in charge of the encounter, it happened at a moment or through the actions of
another that we were not expecting or could not have predicted. Now, all of a sudden, we need
to make a conscious decision to be that encounter for everybody else on their journey. Because
although being a disciple is the act of following another’s example, you are in fact setting the
example to others through your following. And this is why I think discipleship is the more difficult
to understand.
Because being a disciple means having the responsibility of evangelising and catechising others.
Catechising those who already know about God, and evangelising to those that do not yet know
God.
“When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such
authority to man” (Matthew 9:8)
And this is why during Lent, we pray, fast and give alms. Pray for others, fast from your guilty
pleasures and give that time to others. But it is also important to pray for ourselves, fast from
negative thoughts and give yourself the credit you deserve. Because we are all an example to
others, because we have made a simple decision to follow.
I hope that your Easter is full of love and laughter and that is also a great season of celebration.
Joe McCay, Lay Chaplain

Year 8 Briars
Christ the King took 48 students to the Briars for a week
long retreat that took many students on a spiritual
journey.
It was a great opportunity for many of them to have
a different experience of faith. Many were exposed
to areas of spirituality that they had never had the
chance to experience. Many found the week an eye
opener. Many saw that you can believe in God and
have fun at the same time. But most importantly,
they realised that must be themselves as that is how
God made them. The students grew as people
during this retreat and that is something that is not
easy for a young person to do and accept.
The week didn’t come without its challenges and we
battled through snow and hail at various points of
the week! That didn’t dampen the spirit of the
students however and walks still continued, football
was still played and games were still happening all
around the site.
The students were an absolute credit to the school
and the Briars teams are still mentioning this group
to me now, which says a lot about how incredible
these young people are.

Zumbathon
We have 14 Sixth Form students going to
Lourdes in July and as part of that, they
are required to do some fundraising in
order to help them pay for this.
A sponsored Zumbathon took place in school and a former student came in to lead the session.
Having taken part myself, it was very challenging and time seemed to go slower than it ever had
before! But the laughter, teamwork and camaraderie that is shown within this group is infectious
and, somehow, we all managed to get through without injury. Although there were some tired
legs the next day!
This is the highest number of students that Christ the King has taken to Lourdes for a long time.
They are a fantastic group who show care, love and support to each other and, most importantly,
smile every day! If you can help them in any way by making a donation towards their pilgrimage,
where they will be assisting the ill and infirm, then please contact Joe McCay (Lay Chaplain) by
email: JMcCay@christtheking.notts.sch.uk Thank you for your continued and valued support that
you already provide for our wonderful students.
Flame 2019
On Saturday 2 nd March, Flame 2019 took place at Wembley Arena, with over 8000 people
attending what is the biggest Catholic youth event in England and Wales. We took a group which
was led by our Sixth Form Spiritual Co-ordinators and the day was absolutely jam packed full of
live performances, singers, incredible speakers, dramas, Gospel choirs and all was concluded with
Adoration in front of the Blessed Sacrament, which was led by Cardinal Vincent Nichols.
A great day was had by all – here is what some of our students had to say:
“Flame was a fantastic
experience and had a
brilliant feel of faith and
community.” - Lexy
Raymond
Flame was an
energetic and fun
experience – 100%
would go again!” -
Willow Piggott-Gardner
“Flame was the best
uplifting experience! I
learnt so much and it
was very inspirational
for young people.” -
Emily Healy
Flame blew me away, it was
really enjoyable and an
amazing day out with my own
school community as well as
other young people of the
same faith from all around the
country.” - Fran Bertolaso
“It was a great experience, it
was really uplifting and the
music and speakers were
amazing. I would definitely
go again!” - Ania Jackowska
