Firefighter under
investigation in JT
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
The Jackson Township board of
trustees have appointed an independent
party to investigate the off-duty conduct of
a member of the fire department.
At a recent meeting, trustees Stephen
Bowshier and Jim Rauck authorized former
Ohio State Highway Patrolman John
Allard to investigate an alleged domestic
violence incident regarding firefighter
David Scott Burris. Trustee David Burris
recused himself from the action as he is
A preliminary development plan to put an apartment
complex in Grove City was voted down.
At the April 1 meeting, Grove City Council denied
approval for Sugar Maple Commons, which would
have been located south of Holton Road and west of
State Route 104. Treplus Communities, LLC had proposed
to build 105 apartment units at the location for
those 55 and older.
“I like the project. I just don’t know if I like it there,”
said councilwoman Christine Houk.
Several residents spoke out against the proposal
saying the apartments did not fit in with the rural
character of the area.
“I like the rural feel of the area and too much development
takes that away,” said Angela Streeter.
Other residents cited increased traffic as their main
concern about the apartment complex.
Houk said she receives numerous calls from residents
who have concerns about traffic along Borror
Road, Holton Road and State Route 104.
Aaron Underhill, an attorney representing the
developer, said part of the proposal was to realign
Holton Road to help ease traffic concerns around the
apartment complex. He said the developer would complete
a full traffic study and would be open to address
issues with the community.
Only three council members were present to vote on
the preliminary development plan. Roby Schottke was
absent from the meeting and the developer requested
that councilman Ted Berry be removed from voting
due to comments he made about the apartments.
Stephen Smith, the city’s law director, said Berry did
not violate any law or code with his comments and he
could vote on the matter, but Berry voluntarily
recused himself.
The majority of the remaining council members
According to an incident report submitted by the
Grove City Division of Police, their officers responded
to a call on March 7 from the daughter of Burris’ partner
who alleged Burris was “drunk and pushing her
mother around.” According to the police report, Burris
was also alleged to have pushed the daughter when
she told him to stop. Burris denied the allegations to
the officer, stating “nobody touched one another.”
The police placed Burris under arrest due to “visible
abrasions” on his partner’s left arm. Upon his arrest,
the report states his partner refused to cooperate with
the officers.
Franklin County Municipal Court records indicate
he was released on his own recognizance the following
day, has retained Samuel Shamansky as his primary
attorney, and has pled not guilty to the charges. The
Messenger reached out to Burris’ attorney for comment
but has not received a response as of press time.
According to Township Administrator Shane
Farnsworth, Burris has been placed on paid administrative
leave until further notice.
Bowshier said the township hired Allard to conduct
the investigation instead of Fire Chief Randy Little
upon the advice of their legal counsel. Lynn Bruno, the
township’s public information officer, said she does not
Council denies apartment proposal
Funding for road work and trees approved
voted against the proposal. The city’s planning commission
also recommended denial of the plan.
Southwest Boulevard
Council approved an ordinance to appropriate
approximately $668,000 from the county motor vehicle
license fund for improvements to Southwest Boulevard
between Richard Avenue and Hoover Road.
The improvements will include pavement reconstruction,
curb replacement, storm sewer additions,
and full replacement of the intersection of Southwest
Boulevard and Richard Avenue with a proposed roundabout.
The city received a $1.5 million grant from the Ohio
Public Works Commission and a $531,500 interest free
loan. The county engineer approved the use of the
motor vehicle license fund to help fund the local match
portion of the project costs. The total project is estimated
to cost $2.7 million.
The project is scheduled to start in 2020.
Tree Planting
Council approved an ordinance to set aside $76,775
from the community environment fund to plant trees
in various city parks.
“We have a tree deficiency,” said councilman Ted
Berry.
The councilman said the plan is to add 250 trees at
Breck, Westgrove, Henceroth and Fryer parks, as well
as in the city’s Town Center.
“We need more shade in our parks,” said Berry.
Not everyone at the council meeting was in favor of
the tree plantings.
“Grove City resident Roger Burket said, “I like
trees. I don’t like spending $77,000 on them.”
Houk admitted that it is a “hefty price” for trees but
said the costs would be covered by a fund specifically
for trees.
“I am a fiscal conservative, but I am also a tree hugger,”
said the councilwoman.
know how much the independent investigation will
cost at this time.
The March 7 incident is the third off-duty incident
that Burris has reportedly been involved in within the
past 19 months. In August of 2017, Burris was pulled
over for a driving infraction and later cited for suspicion
of operating a vehicle while under the influence.
Several weeks later, he received a disorderly conduct
citation from the Grove City Division of Police.
According to municipal court records, Burris’ disorderly
conduct charge was dismissed and he pled guilty to
reckless operation in 2018.
At the time of the August 2017 incident, Burris was
the township’s fire marshal. After subsequent internal
investigations by Little, he was reassigned at the end
of December 2017.
In related news, the trustees authorized Little at
the April 2 board meeting to investigate the off-duty
conduct of two firefighters. Little said he cannot comment
on the matter at this time.
The meeting also saw the promotion of Luke Smith,
a 16-year veteran of the department, to the rank of
captain. Little said Smith’s integrity “sets an example”
for the rest of the department and added that he was
“proud to have him on the leadership team.”

The disappointment Aisho Ali felt was a
shared experience with her family.
For months, the tight-knit group had
provided encouragement as the senior at
Franklin Heights High School went after a
number of scholarship opportunities and
then support after she received word she
had not been selected for any of them.
“It was really kind of hard to see,” said
Ali’s older sister, Maryam Bafadal.
To keep the valedictorian from becoming
too despondent, they told her to keep
applying for scholarships and reminded
her that it would work out in the end.
“We had confidence that it would be
OK,” said Bafadal.
During the final round of searching, Ali
came upon a scholarship from the National
Honor Society that provided a chance for
its chapter members to receive up to
$25,000 for future studies should they
become finalists. With the deadline to
apply looming, Ali knew she had to take a
chance.
“I figured I had nothing to lose,” she
said.
Working with Clarissa Furlong, her
Hurry, spots fill up quickly!
A first for the school district
sophomore AP biology teacher and key club
adviser, they discussed how to make the
student with a long history of volunteerism
stand out in a field of equally accomplished
students. In the end, Furlong encouraged
Ali to share her passion with the advisory
board.
“I told Aisho to let them know what was
in her heart,” she said.
And to Furlong, it is a heart filled with
wonder, compassion and determination.
“She has been making a difference in
her community and her school for years,
but I think she’s going to make a huge difference
in the entire world.”
Having sent in her essay about the
importance of community and being a positive
change, Ali and her family waited for
word. And waited. And waited some more.
Then one morning, Bafadal received a call
from Shelly Mann, the NHS co-adviser at
Franklin Heights, who told her that her
sister was the recipient of the $25,000
scholarship.
“I was half asleep when I answered, but
then I was wide awake, my heart beating
so fast,” said Bafadal.
Knowing that a surprise ceremony with
a delegation from the National Association
of Secondary School Principals, the parent
organization of NHS, was forthcoming,
Bafadal was sworn to secrecy.
“I had to tell the rest of my family, of
course, but we promised not to make any
mention to Aisho,” she said.
It was a promise that was hard to keep
for the family that is used to sharing everything
with each other.
“I was scared I would tell,” said her
mother, Fatma Bafadal.
Complicating issues was Ali’s planned
absence the day of the ceremony as she was
set to interview with advisers with the
early assurance program at Ohio State
University’s College of Pharmacy. Though
the meeting was postponed, Ali thought
she might take the day off.
“We told her she had to go to school,”
said Maryam Bafadal.
“I was very confused as to why they kept
telling me I had to go,” said Ali. “I don’t
make it a habit to miss school so I was very
puzzled by their behavior.”
Though suspicious, Ali didn’t think
much of it when an announcement went
over the public address system stating that
all NHS chapter members should report to
the auditorium. Nor did she give it further
thought when a section was filled with people
in business attire. Then, as Dr.
Christine Handy, the president of the
NASSP spoke of a student and an essay
that “exemplified all that is great” about
the NHS, a shock of sorts overcame her.
“I didn’t know what was happening,”
said Ali. “I didn’t know if someone else in
our chapter had sought out this scholarship
or if they were really here for me.”
She said she couldn’t believe that it was
Aisho Ali, a senior at Franklin Heights
High School, received a $25,000 National
Honor Society scholarship during a surprise
ceremony on March 22. Her selection
from the NHS parent organization,
the National Association of Secondary
School Principals, marks the first time a
student in the South-Western City School
District has received the award. Pictured
with Ali (second from left) is principal Tim
Donahue, Dr. Beverly Hutton and Dr.
Christine Handy, the deputy executive
director of program services and the
president, respectively, of the NASSP.
her they were there for.
“It’s having trouble sinking into my
brain,” she said. “This means so much to
me and my family. I don’t want them to
have to worry about coming up with the
money to pay for school or the prospect of
debt, mine or theirs, so this is a real blessing.”
Handy said Ali was chosen for the
$25,000 scholarship out of 11,000 applicants
and 600 finalists because she best
represents the four pillars of the NHS —
scholarship, leadership, service and character.
“She stood out as a person who exemplified
all of those traits and more,” said
Handy, referring to Ali’s work fighting the
teen opioid epidemic with the Ohio
Attorney General’s Teen Ambassador
Board, her co-founding of the school’s
UNICEF chapter (with Maryam), her academics
and her future pursuits. “We know
she will go far in life.”
Having been accepted to Ohio State, Ali
plans to enroll in the college of pharmacy
where she intends to continue her work in
the fight against opioid abuse.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do exactly
but it has always been my goal to help
other people,” she said. “I think we need to
treat others well and try our best to be a
positive change.”
Furlong said she has no doubt Ali will
continue to do just that.
“If she has her mind set on something, it
will happen,” she said.

Buying a home:
What’s your credit score got to do with it?
There is no time like the present to educate yourself on your
credit score, how it’s calculated, and how you can improve it.
But what does your credit score have to do with buying a
home? Everything.
Your credit score is one of the leading factors in determining
what type of mortgage loan you qualify for. Typically, the higher
the credit score, the lower the interest rate. You’ll find the
difference of a few points on your score can affect your monthly
payment by hundreds of dollars.
Credit Score Scale:
Poor Credit = 300 to mid-600s
You’ve got work to do, but you do have options! If your
credit score needs some TLC, take action to improve it. Start by
making on-time payments on all of your bills, checking your
credit report for errors, and working to pay down credit card
balances. It is important to know your lender options. When
you have a subpar credit score and want to buy a home, it may
benefit you to look into credit unions and community banks
first.
Fair to Good Credit = Mid-600s to mid-700s
Congratulations! A credit score in this range means you’re
likely to qualify for a variety of loan types. For those in the Fair
category, consider FHA or VA programs that often have lower
credit score qualifications and help borrowers with low down
payments. If you score in the Good range, your options increase
significantly. You may qualify for mortgages with lower interest
rates, including conventional, USDA, and HomeReady
loans.
Very Good to Excellent Credit = Above mid-700s
High five! You’ve hit the credit score jackpot! This means
you will likely receive the lowest rates available with more
options on the table. With a credit score above 700, you may
qualify for jumbo loans in addition to other mortgage types. A
jumbo mortgage is a non-conforming mortgage and is used
when a homebuyer is seeking a loan that is greater than the conforming
loan limit in the area.
Factors to consider when choosing and applying mulch
Homeowners associate mulch with
springtime lawn and garden care.
Mulch protects roots against extreme
temperatures.
Mulch is often connected with its ability
to help soil retain moisture during especially
warm times of the year, when mulch
promotes strong roots that can help lawns
and plants survive periods of extreme heat.
Applying mulch in spring can be beneficial
to lawns.
Homeowners should first consider a few
factors.
•Timing: Know when the average day of
the last frost is in your area.
•Texture: Try medium-textured mulch.
Fine particles may pack down and retain
moisture that will evaporate before it
reaches the plant roots. Materials that are
too coarse may be incapable of holding sufficient
amounts of water to benefit the soil.
•Nutrients: Humus is an organic component
of soil that forms when leaves and
other plant materials decompose. Organic
mulches provide humus and decompose
over time, adding nutrients into the soil.
•Application: Correct application of the
mulch is essential. Applying too much
mulch can adversely affect lawns, plants
that people, plants and animals call home.
First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day was
established to demonstrate support for
environmental protection, and events are
held each year on April 22. It is now coordinated
Spring is in the air and garbage is on the ground
Signs of spring are everywhere. Song
birds are camped on branches making
beautiful music, neighbors you haven’t
seen for weeks are emerging from their
caves with smiles and optimistic moods,
trees are ready to explode with foliage, and
the chemical lawn spraying game is in full
swing insuring homeowners will be mowing
every few days for the coming months.
The most convincing sign was my annual
sighting of the porta potties being delivered
to Murfin Fields. Yes, spring is in the air,
literally, bringing back memories of that
saying, ‘springtime in the cow pasture.’
I’m like most people, at least in a few
ways. I enjoy the changing season, especially
after a rough winter. But spring has
never been my favorite season. I just don’t
enjoy the long changeover period until it
fully takes over from the winter blahs, the
period when things haven’t fully bloomed,
there’s mud everywhere, and every day
seems to have high winds so no matter
what you wear, you’re either too cold or
hot. But the worst thing is the garbage. It’s
always there, it just seems so much more
pronounced in early spring, before emerging
vegetation later hides it. A big part of
spring is just plain ugly to me. Almost
everywhere I go or look there’s highly visible
garbage.
I’ll start at home. There’s a street that
runs west/east running up to our backyard
fence. When people along that street place
their weekly garbage out for pickup, the
fence inevitably ends up getting a significant
portion of it, directly proportional to
any weather fronts that blast through the
area. The prevailing winds are often like
something out of the “Wizard of Oz.” They
send trash sailing down the street and into
our fence. Too often people put their
garbage out for pickup without any
thoughts of securing, even when high wind
warnings have been issued well in
advance.
By spring, the fence is stacked with a
full range of garbage trophies. You’d be
amazed at the assortment of items that pile
up. Over the years, too many of the
dwellers from the multiple apartments on
the other side of the fence have contributed
to the mess throwing cans, fast food containers
and an assortment of other classics
out of their parked cars. The apartment
landlords make absolutely no attempt to
keep garbage cleared from the apartment
complexes, apparently assuming the
renters will handle it. They don’t, the landlords
don’t, and I can’t stand looking at it.
So, it defaults to my responsibility after I
reach the point where I can’t stand looking
at it any longer. I hop over the fence a few
times a year and do the disgusting job of
filling numerous garbage bags to put out
for collection.
This brings up the topic of those tacky
bright orange recycling containers. It’s
great they have secure lids that have
helped reduce recycle material from being
routinely distributed across the landscape
as happened with the open-topped recycle
bins we previously had. However, they sure
are ugly. You can spot one a mile away. If
the goal was to make them visible for some
reason, they’ve accomplished that and
more. I wouldn’t be surprised if the
International Space Station could spot
them. They do nothing to help the aesthetic
quality of a neighborhood unless you’re
really into bright orange and probably also
enjoy orange barrel construction zones. I’m
not sure what the process was for selecting
the colors, but I would have voted for a
deep forest green container with a small
orange recycle indicator on it.
As with most everything these days,
there are guidelines in the city code for
placing trash out, now including those
recycle containers. But, as with many of
the countless codes, too often they’re not
realized or just ignored by some homeowners
and rarely enforced.
Trash theoretically starts gravitating
out to the curbside the day before pickup.
Then, most of the emptied barrels begin
slowly making their way back to their hiding
places after collection, but still a good
portion the day after. That’s three days out
of the seven day week. You’re fortunate if
you live where they all go out and back on
garbage day. There’s been one of those
bright orange barrels sitting out on the
curb down the road for over three weeks
now. It takes just one sighting to totally
blemish an otherwise pretty neighborhood.
I read where complaints over unsolicited
home delivered paper items has resulted in
yet another city code ordinance. New
guidelines say materials are no longer to be
just thrown out of car delivery windows,
only to get blown about and end up in
yards, streets and clog up storm drains.
I’ve seen the problem while walking about.
Hopefully the new guidelines will help. I
suspect heavy winds will still cause inadvertent
unintended blowing consequences
that might unfairly penalize the distributors
with fines, assuming the ordinance is
even enforced.
Perhaps a public relations emphasis
highlighting our garbage concerns might
help. Our already active and successful
Keep Grove City Beautiful Committee
could work in concert with the new
Environmental Sustainable Committee
Council that’s being created. Maybe just
pushing it to the forefront will create more
neighborhood pride resulting in residents
taking a few seconds to routinely pick
garbage up from their lawns or the street
in front of them, keeping the storm sewer
Think twice before you buy a bunny this Easter
Buying live bunnies as an Easter present
for a child is not a good idea unless
you are willing to commit to 10 years of
providing food, exercise, socialization and
overlooking gnaw marks on most everything.
That little ball of fur with the tiny ears
and a cotton puff tail can melt your heart.
A baby bunny in a basket on Easter morning
could be the pinnacle of a holiday celebration.
But it is not a good idea.
At this time of the year, rabbits are
everywhere. They appear in television commercials
and on packages of candy. Stores
are filled with stuffed rabbits, candy rabbits
and ceramic rabbits. It is no surprise
children beg their parents for a real bunny
of their own, but ill-prepared to care for
Places - By Linda Dillman
these bunnies, owners often quickly tire of
them.
While baby bunnies grow up into still
adorable adult rabbits, they have their own
set of needs. Because they are prey animals,
they generally don’t like to be handled,
but, at the same time, crave interaction
and can be quite playful.
They need exercise space and, like cats
and dogs, need to be neutered or spayed.
Unlike dogs, which are happy with the
same chow day in and out, rabbits need a
balanced diet of hay, greens and fresh veggies–not
just a bag of compressed pellets
from the local big box store.
What happens after a bunny grows into
adulthood or loses its allure after a couple
of months? They go the way of unwanted
pets–taken to a neighborhood shelter or
set loose in the back yard. In the months
following the holiday, humane societies
and rabbit rescues are flooded with rabbits.
These are the “lucky” ones.
The unlucky ones are dumped outside
where predators, cars, illness and injury
virtually guarantee an early death for a
creature that could have life expectancy as
long as a large dog. Domestic rabbits are
not wild rabbits and do not the skills to
survive in the wild.
That is why I want to warn people
against making a quick decision about
bringing a live bunny home for Easter.
My best advice? Still buy a bunny, but
make it chocolate.
at the curb clear, the
recycle containers
out of sight, or the
overgrown bushes
trimmed away from
the sidewalks. I’m
always bewildered
when I walk by an
obviously occupied
home and see weeks of weathered delivered
papers laying in a yard or driveway and a
gaudy sign that says, “Stay Off the Grass.”
Attitude is the key to success for most
anything. We need to get a buy-in that
keeping our community garbage-free is
everyone’s concern and job, not someone
else’s. We need to draw on community
pride. Do we always need to demand a new
ordinance for everything when a little
prideful focus and effort might solve
things?
For years, I’ve walked by Murfin Fields
the day after they’ve completed their big
post-season football tournament. It’s so
embarrassing to view all the garbage
strewn across the entire complex. There’s
everything ranging from dirty diapers, beer
cans, bottles, fast food containers, to broken
chairs abandoned coolers and broken
umbrellas. The attitude must be, “someone
will pick it up”. They do. I’ve talked with
the groundskeeper. It takes a few days and
hopefully no big winds hit the area before
finished, else some of it ends up in the
already garbage strewn stream and surrounding
neighborhoods. It’s the same scenario
during and after the annual Alumni
Softball Tournament games in July.
As that Forest Service saying with
Woodsie Owl says, “Give a Hoot Don’t
Pollute.” Let’s all keep the garbage in our
town picked up and those awful recycle
containers out of view as much as possible.
Pleasant Township to partner with LifeCare Alliance
By Josh Jordan
Staff Writer
A recent vote of approval from the board
of trustees means the Pleasant Township
fire departments will soon have a new partner
to help residents.
Lifecare Alliance has partnered with
Pleasant Township to offer services at little
to no cost to residents.
“I think it’s a great program. I think it’s
something that can benefit the township,”
said Fire Chief Brian Taylor. “It’s no cost to
the township.”
The program helps people with diabetes
management, offers meals-on-wheels,
home safety services and partners with the
Columbus Cancer Clinic to offer free or discounted
cancer screenings.
“Lifecare’s folks will come in and train
our guys on what to look for and how to get
in touch with them and how to get the residents
the services they need and that’s
really all there is to it,” said Taylor.
Training will take place in April and as
soon as personnel are trained, they will
start referring residents to the service.
Residents can
also contact Lifecare
Alliance directly at
614-437-2912 or at
lifecarealliance.org/referral.
The trustees have also approved the
hire of a chaplain for the Pleasant
Township Fire Department.
Larry Baker has been offered the position
and would be the first chaplain to
serve the department. Baker is a retired
captain of the Upper Arlington fire department
and even helped out on a call that
came in during his interview.
“I told Larry flat out that I didn’t want
Firefighters to host Easter event
The Pleasant Township Fire Department will host
at 5373 Norton Road in Grove City. The event will feature
activities for children and a visit from the Royals.
somebody that was just going to be here for
somebody who’s active in the department
and who knows the guys and can help us
out.”
In other news, the dates for the Pleasant
Township spring clean-up were approved
for April 26 and 27. Times will be determined
and posted on the township website
in the coming days.
Hydrant flushing in JT
The Jackson Township Fire Department will begin
its annual hydrant flushing program on May 13. The
program will be conducted Monday through Friday
from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, until all areas of the
township have been completed. It is expected that the
flushing will take two to four weeks.
Hydrant flushing may cause water to become rusty
and to appear discolored. Although the water is not
harmful to drink, it can cause discoloration of laundry.
There are products, available at most area pharmacies
and grocery stores, which should remove the rust from
clothing if discolored when washed in the rusty water.
Dumbo’s cuteness saves this muddled mess
The expression ‘so and so elevates the material’
speaks of a remarkable performance in an otherwise
dull movie, play or television show. Traditionally, this
statement is in reference to a human actor but the latest
Disney film makes the case that it can also encompass
computer creations.
In “Dumbo,” an expanded live-action adaptation of
an animated classic, it is the digital pachyderm that
makes the show. While I suspect that was not the
entire intention, this elephant doll made on an assembly
line gone wrong is the saving grace in this muddled
mess of a film.
Taking place post World War I, “Dumbo” centers on
a struggling troupe of circus performers. Like the rest
of the country, their circus has fallen onto hard times
and drastic cuts to its operations have had to be made.
One such casualty is to the equine act led by the famed
Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell), who only learns of this
decision after he returns from serving overseas.
With two children to take care of — his wife died of
influenza, of course — Holt begs circus owner Max
Medici (Danny DeVito) to find him a new place where
he can work and train animals. As luck would have it,
there is an opening tending to the elephants but Holt
is less than thrilled with this news.
One of his first tasks is to tend to the pregnant elephant
Jumbo and then prepare the baby for display.
When they discover that the calf’s ears are wildly disproportionate
to its body, however, it falls on him to
figure out how to keep the circus from becoming a
national laughing stock. As luck wouldn’t have it,
things quickly go awry.
During its first public unveiling, the calf is swaddled
in baby elephant gear complete with a stroller. As
he is paraded around in front of the masses, he sneezes
in a feather and appears to fly backward. While Holt’s
children, Milly and Joe (played by Nico Parker and
Finley Hobbins, respectively) told him about this magical
feat, he is more concerned by the awful reaction
from the crowd who jeer the calf’s ears. In the ensuing
melee, Jumbo gets protective and an accident befalls
The Reel Deal - By Dedra Cordle
the big tent. Mother and son are separated in the
aftermath, and the kids make a deal with the newly
named Dumbo: perform in the circus and they’ll buy
his mother back.
What follows is a sanitized version of how animals
were trained and treated in (some) circuses, a push by
a wealthy entrepreneur (Michael Keaton) of dubious
intent to merge the two entertainment ventures, and
actors who are clearly not used to performing with CGI
animals, particularly flying baby elephants. Their
interactions remind me of the ‘Be Our Guest’ number
in the live-action Beauty and the Beast where Belle
“performs” with the talking pottery and furniture.
While they are not as stiff as the actress in that scene,
the ones in Dumbo are not as fluid as they could, or
should, have been either.
Clocking in around 1 hour and 50 minutes,
“Dumbo” can be a bit of a slog to get through. It doesn’t
help that plot threads are picked up and dropped off,
nor does it help that the human characters are underdeveloped;
If you’re going to make a movie about a flying
elephant but put the focus on the humans, at least
make them interesting. There is also a weird subplot
about the dangers of capitalism, which coming from
Disney is just laughable. I don’t know if the studio
missed that current from writer Ehren Kruger and
director Tim Burton, or if they just thought it was a
cute inside joke but it’s just another oddity in this
tonally odd movie.
While “Dumbo” is neither good nor bad, there are
cute moments, especially when it comes to its star, the
digital pachyderm. The creators did a wonderful job
with bringing this computer graphic to life and you
can’t help but be enamored with his floppy ears, tubby
body and emotional eyes. If there is one thing to take
away from this film, it is that elephants are special
creatures who deserve the best in life, and better
movies. Grade: C
Pets of the week
Louis is a wiggly guy.
He can be a little on
the timid side at first,
but seems to warm
quickly. He loves to
get attention and will
be your very best
friend forever. He can
be a little unsure of
other dogs and may do best as the only dog
in the home, or must meet any potential furry
friends before adoption. Come meet Louis
today at the Franklin County Dog Shelter.
FYI: 614-525-3647 or www.franklincountydogs.com
Olive is as sweet as
can be. She is a
smart lady as she
knows sit, shake with
both paws, and can
gently sit up. She
walks great on leash
and enjoys her time
outside. She’s just looking for someone to
love on. Olive is up for adoption at the Franklin
County Dog Shelter.
FYI: 614-525-3647 or www.franklincountydogs.com
These furry friends are available
for adoption at local
rescues and shelters
Blue is a big baby. He
might have a loud
bark, but just wants to
play all day. He could
play for hours with
toys, even by himself.
He’s a sweet, handsome
pooch in search of his forever family. He
walks well with a harness lead, always checking
in to see where he should go next. He’s a
gentle boy ready to find the perfect home.
FYI: 614-525-3647 or www.franklincountydogs.com
Regina is a spirited
gal. She’ll chase any
ball you throw for
miles and keep her
tail wagging as she
goes. Regina is looking
for a family that
can match her energetic
lifestyle and maybe a furry friend in her
new home. If you’re looking for a girl who’s
always got a positive attitude, you can’t find a
better match than Regina. Adopt her from the
Franklin County shelter.
Running with
adoptable dogs
The Franklin County Dog Shelter and
Adoption Center has announced a new
program where individuals who like to run
can take dogs from the shelter, transport
them to the Columbus Park of Roses, and
run for six miles with a companion.
The Franklin County Dog Shelter
Running Club not only allows for the dogs
to leave the shelter for a period of time,
which is proven to benefit both their physical
and emotional well-being, but also
gives the runner motivation and companionship
on the trail.
Initially this program is only open to
current, trained volunteers at the shelter
and will occur before or after the shelter’s
open hours. Dogs participating in the program
have been identified by shelter staff.
The Franklin County Dog Shelter
Running Club will be open for community
participation in the coming months.
Contact the shelter if your running group
is interested in joining the program.
The Franklin County Dog Shelter and
Adoption Center is located at 4340
Tamarack Blvd. in Columbus and is
opened Monday through Friday from 11
a.m. to 7 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on
Saturday and Sunday. For more information,
